HDR+ is basically the old HDR auto mode. It may or may not use HDR depending on conditions.
The HDR+ Enhanced mode is now the HDR on mode. It will always use HDR.

This isn't correct. The HDR plus on is the always on mode that is default. It constantly takes underexposed photos and combines them to create better color and dynamic range. The HDR enhanced is the classic HDR that's on most phones that takes a underexposed, regular and over exposed photo and combines them for a bigger effect. This takes longer and is effected by movement very easily.

So which one would you say is better to take photos on? Sorry, I am a noob when it comes to photography
The default is good for most situations and is the one Google works to improve the most. It's very fast at that setting as well.
I'm not even seeing HDR options in my camera. Isn't it normally at the top?

Okay, just revisiting this thread now that 8.1 is out and visual core is enabled. Am I right to think HDR+Enhanced is the one to leave it on? Should be faster than ever now with the dedicated co-processor. Dunno? That is what I have it set to now. Thoughts?

This is not my understanding
Sorry everyone, but HDR+ Enhanced is nothing special. Google just renamed the strings to better reflect how HDR+ works in the Google Camera app.
<string name="hdr_auto_desc">HDR+ on</string>
<string name="hdr_on_desc">HDR+ enhanced</string>
<string name="hdr_plus_auto_desc">HDR Plus on</string>
<string name="hdr_plus_on_desc">HDR Plus enhanced</string>
As you can see in the above strings, taken from an APK teardown of the latest Google Camera app, what was previously known as HDR+ Auto is now HDR+ On and what was once known as HDR+ On is now HDR+ Enhanced.

No, dakalter is right. HDR+ constantly takes underexposed photos which get combined, and HDR+ Enhanced takes under, regular, and over-exposed photos which are combined. I can't find the link, but this info comes directly from Google.

Visual core is not going to impact photos taken by the stock camera app. MAYBE processing speed, but not capture speed or results. It's only meant to bring the greatness of the camera to other apps.

The stock camera doesn't use the visual core yet, so you won't notice any improvements.
Google either needs to update the camera app for this to work, or someone needs to release a modded camera app that looks towards the visual core instead of the 835 ISP.
Why the visual core is not enabled by default on 8.1?why do we have to enable it in dev option?

The visual core is enabled but Google has said that the default camera app will not benefit from it.

Something else worth noting is that turning HDR+ Enhanced on disables Motion Photos, while just HDR+ allows Motion Photos.

Do you know what this means and how to fix it? I get the same thing. I'm still on 7.1.1 if that means anything.
Only works on 8.0+
Taken at least a dozen photos of my idiotic face just to test it, and it works exceptionally well really. Thanks to whoever modified it, great job.
The caveats though, it will only work as long as a HUMAN FACE is detected, for nothing else, and HDR+ or HDR Enhanced etc. modes won't have any effect while using this portrait mode. Also I really wish the images didn't come in the burst mode format, but I am sure a future update will polish up these things, kindly update the topic if an update is made to the app.

If you check out the post I linked to in the op, he details how this sorcery works. I don't think portrait mode is designed to work with hdr+ as it is kind of counterintuitive. Face retouch works however and works well with portrait mode. I think the burst mode is a side effect of the work around he is using (using the software version that's implemented in the pixel 2's ffc on our cameras rear facing camera). Anyways I'm just happy to see our device is still getting improvements from these newer devices. ?
Has anyone tested normal photos with HDR and HDR+ to see if it performs the same as the normal google camera? If it's the same then it makes sense to disable the google camera and rely totally on this one.

Yes, EIS does not work with 1080p ( which I use the most for the 60fps) and to be honest, HDR+ enhanced seems to be a bit over processed compared to the stock camera in my opinion.
Do you have the newer APK, which I told adds some 4k features?

Need to root?
To have real HDR+ to work you must have check mark in the dot/circle next to HDR+ icon.
We don't have this check mark when we choose HDR+ ON.
I think that real HDR+ processing ia not present now.
Testing the camera now on my P10 Plus, but there is a lor of noise and seems HDR+ is not working really with image stacking and all...

I'ts have hdr+, its faster becose it use 4 pictures to get 1 pic, not 10 like Pixel phones, becose of algoritam 4 diferent scenes of lighting.
Hmm I don't think this is actually producing any HDR pics. There is no difference in file sizes or any other data between two photos taken with and without HDR+ turned on

Yes, I noticed that too, makes no sense that HDR+ is working when the sizes are the same of pics after HDR+ is completely ON and OFF. Not only that is a sign it is not working, but as I said the check mark inside the circle is a real indication when HRD+ is turned on. Here HDR+ ON icon doesn't change with a check mark- this is the sign that HDR+ is activated.
On top of that there is so much noise in pics and no detail.
I have seen a friends Mi5s Plus with working HDR+ Mod and I tested it extensively and I know the behavior of HDR+ and the kind pictures it produces.
I hope that this mod will get better soon, it looks promising!
Hdr not working
Does it need root?...,if so where can I I?
any update with this apk?
BTW thank you for this apk
HDR+ needs Oreo to work.
Im waiting for update on P9 to test it. For now no difference comparing to native camera app.
root: It works on my Oreo P10 without root.
HDR+: I don't see any difference in the images if I check HDR+ on sv HDR+ off. So it does not seem to work.
Nevertheless, Photo Sphere is working which is good.
The best part of this APK is it does not crash except may be Slow Motion. For all others pic quality is good at least we may a working APK which can be improved over time.
Great start

Did anybody try this? Are the photos as good as Pixel 3 especially portraits?
Thanks OP. It works great. No crash yet. The rear and front cam portrait work good and way faster compare to gcam mods on my old S8+.
The night option shows a bank screen.
I tried as well. The regular HDR+ shots handle light sources much better than the current 6T stock hdr. Taking a picture of a dark room with a television with text (high contrast) but putting the focus point below on a dark object, 6T stock cam blows out the picture onscreen, where as pixel cam port keeps the text legible. I have the same issue as well, with Nightsight on the port just rendering a black screen in the viewfinder and locking the app. Great first start though, massive potential here, maybe oneplus dev's could decompile and take a few pointers

Well ar stickers works just fine
However I am not able to use Marvel stickers and playground 2.0
Pretty cool to use once installed. The selfie camera in regular and portrait mode is 10x better. Still use nightmode on my stock 6T camera of course and the regular camera on the back is much better through this pixel app.
Few things though: The camera will take a photo and sometimes crash when you go to look at the image and the photo doesn't save. No biggie because this is happening to Pixel 3 users lol. The other things is, I don't know if any of you have taken time to notice, but the portrait mode on the back camera doesn't work from what I can tell and a few of my friends with extensive photography knowledge said they felt the same way when examining this. We took multiple photos with the regular back camera and the portrait mode back camera and the focus was the exact same, but because it's focus on the object is so strong it might appear like it's blurring out the background. Also, not sure if this proves my point, but these cameras will save both the regular photo and the portrait mode photo to give you the options which only happens when I take a selfie in portrait mode, but not on the back camera in portrait mode. Anyone else experiencing this issue? Thanks for the hard work guys, this is still great!

I just tried the back portrait mode and it definitely saved the original and the portrait mode.
Edit: it works on people, but it doesn't seem to be working on objects. My Pixel 3 LX does portrait mode on both people and objects. For some reason the port on the OnePlus 6t is only working on people for portrait mode.

Here are three different photos, first one taken on my Pixel 3 XL, second one taken on my OnePlus 6T with the Pixel camera port, third one taken on my OnePlus 6T with the stock camera app.
To large to add all three to one post so here are the Pixel 3 XL and OnePlus 6T using the Pixel camera app. I'll add the photo taken with the stock Oneplus camera app in the next post.
Something doesn't quite seem right with the camera quality. I've toggled between both lenses and suspect it could be the included camera app. I've briefly tested with Camera ZOOM FX Premium and yield grainier results. I just installed cstark27's Google Camera and will give that a go, but I wanted to see if my results are typical or if my particular device is flawed. Perhaps needless to say: the included photo has no filter. HDR was enabled, however. This is with stock app.

So? Then take app of HTC camera and install it on G7, it'd probably work well too
I can try it, but considering core apps moved to another device tend to need to be modified to function properly (example being GCam), this strikes me as poor advice.
I'm more concerned over why the included app seems to be applying some kind of beautifying filter that makes it lose finer details.
Evidence of attempt.
Core is very limited in how it can be configured.

You have HDR set to Auto. This causes applying some kind of beautifying filter that makes it lose finer details. Turn it off
Hi,
I can't find it anymore but someone said that there is more motion blur on the pixel 3 than the pixel 2 b/c the default shutter speeds are much slower now.
Is this true? One thing I really liked about the pixel 2 is that it was the only smartphone that was very resistant to motion blur by default, even at the expense of higher iso.
Seeing so much motion blur on the pixel 3. After using the pixel 2 for a year , I am positive that what you say is true in the few days I have been taking pictures on the pixel 3. I am hoping this is not inherent to the hardware because this one aspect has made me think of switching back to the pixel 2

Or you could just use OpenCamera app and have a fully manually controllable camera (well, apart from the iris which is fixed). Iso 400 (for some reason the actual value is 395) gives in my not so brightly lit office shutter speeds of around 1/500s for a correctly exposed picture and produces a negligible amount of noise. Iso 800 still is very, very good. And even Iso 1600 is still absolutely usable, but may require a little post processing for larger prints.
Anyone with both phones can easily test this. Shoot the same scene and look at the metadata to see the shutter speeds. Could well be the 3 camera app was modified to reduce noise with a slower shutter speed but increased motion blur. There are always compromises.
This is absolutely true. The Pixel 1 and Pixel 2 had extremely fast shutter speeds. I snap multiple photos in a go on Pixel 1 and 2 as it was so quick, and never any blur.
Top shot and various other "features" on the pixel 3 really let it down.
is there anyway to set a default minimum shutter speed, basically a shutter priority mode?

If you buy a phone for 1000$+ you expect everything goes right by default

You can test with a moded gcam app if the problem is really software
Download in celsoazevedo web page cstark moded gcam app (p3v8) and make a comparision with that camera and stock
I am using it on my pixel 2xl , shutter speed is the same as stock

There is no "right" in default photo settings, it's a matter of trying to choose settings that give the best results for the most users. That's why manual controls exist. A faster shutter speed to minimize blur isn't right or wrong, it's a trade-off. I would have preferred manual control options to be included but they chose simple over more complicated, and there are plenty of apps available to fill that gap.
How does using a 3rd party app prove whether the Pixel 2 had a faster default shutter speed than the 3?

Just trying , as moded gcam app has same shutter speed than stock pixel 2 , if you try it on pixel 3 , then you know if the problem ks the strock camera app software or it is something about hardware

Ok, sorry, I get it, that could work.
