[SOLVED] HELP -- Issues unlocking bootloader - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

I've tried fastboot flashing unlock, fastboot OEM unlock and a couple others All In bootloader mode. I've used a couple different versions ADB fastboot. A lot of people have been using the minimal ADB 1.4.2 which is the most current. But i ended up getting them from googles platform-tools. Fastboot flashing unlock always responds with
FAILED (command write failed (no error))
Then the device reboots.
Developer settings is on OEM unlocking is checked and USB debugging is also checked.
I don't know what else to do other than start from scratch entirely including deleting all ADB and fastboot files and maybe factory resetting the device although I've only had it for a day. It's amazing sitting at my home with my computer and a phone and being pissed off for 3 hours no one understands this unlike us. I know a lot of other people had the same issue. Anyone have any ideas they would be greatly appreciated. This is a pixel XL 2 from Google

Different and and fastboot...

Just to confirm:
Is this a Verizon version?
Have you followed all of the steps for flashing a system image from https://developers.google.com/android/images
adb otherwise works (e.g., adb devices lists the phone)
fastboot otherwise works
I realize you already covered some of this. Unlocking will wipe anyway, so factory reset can't hurt.

This is not a Verizon version. ADB is working and ADB devices works correct. Fastboot devices respond with the device serial number so it appears to be working properly. I've never had issues like this, don't know why flashing a factory would do anything but I probably will. And maybe fastboot flashing unlock from a 'fresh' device as I have my apps on it from a Google restore.

The latest minimal adb/fastboot work fine. Is usb debugging turned on? When you type fastboot devices do you see your phone?
The easiest way would be to re install minimal adb. At the end it ask do you want to re it. Say yes and it starts in the correct command prompt. Type fastboot reboot bootloader just to make sure it's communicating. If it doesn't reboot try another cable.

I had the same problem as you. I kept trying for about 2 hours over and over. I was about to throw the phone against the wall when it finally just worked. I didn't do anything different when it worked than the previous 200 times it didn't.

I've tried with maybe three or four different fast boots like minimal ADB a couple different versions and also Google on platforms-tools. I unchecked and rechecked developer options and oem unlocking and USB debugging. It's kind of pissing me off because last night I spent a good four hours trying every possible configuration. And I've never had this much problem on any phone ever it usually works the first time or second if I made an easy mistake but not after multiple hours and multiple command prompt checks and fastboot ADB checks. Yes I was about ready to throw this phone against the wall and return it which is unheard of in my world of Google perfection.
I was thinking "Fu***************************k!!"

It took me about 8 tries before I had success.

Just got mine. Not gonna unlock yet. Want to keep Android Pay for now. Actually if AdClear and Fake GPS work, I may stay stock unrooted.
Default backups seem to work good these days, even remembering passwords for apps.
Glad I didn't waste 4 hours trying to unlock. I spend way too much time flashing, updated and trying to trick SafetyNet. But it's all working great now with Magisk 14.3 on OG Pixel.
Can't wait to get the OTA notification and not start stressing out about ADB and fastboot....

Feel your pain. Wasted a whole day a few weeks ago trying to switch from Super Su to Magisk and get Oct updates. Wound up trying to flash factory in ages using Crouton in a Chromebook.
Just saw that custom kernel is avail....so we can unlock and pass safety net. So TEMPTING. Just say NO. Gonna drink wine and watch Orville till these evil thoughts disperse.

First of all, thanks Deuces and Northmendo for the idea to help people.
I have created a pretty easy all in one that will install the lasted adb and fastboot system wide and fastboot flash unlock and unlock_critical. It will install the latest 8.1 developer preview for the Pixel 2 XL for you as well with all the necessary files included. I did not inlcude the lock and lock_critical function as most do not use it.
As the instructions state, please use a usb 2.0 port and and usb-c to usb-a cable that supports data. Also enabling debugging and oem unlock is a must.
It includes a menu driven batch file that is super easy to use.
For those that want to use this same batch file on the pixel 2 itself, please extract the zip from google and then extract the zip within the zip. Next pull the bootloader and radio img file from the root of the zip to the FILES folder included in this program. Then copy all the contents from the zip within the zip to the same FILES folder. It should contain about 22 files in total. We really don't need the android-info.txt file.
I will also be including a batch file with a semi empty FILES folder that does not include any Google related 8.1 files for those that want to download it quicker and copy their own contents to it for flashing. Like Pixel 2 owners that already have the 8.1 preview downloaded.
If anyone needs any help please feel free to ask. This post was rushed so please excuse my grammatical errors.

[2013] Possibly hard bricked on factory image update. Honestly not sure.

Earlier today I used the Nexus Root Tool Kit to flash stock and flash the factory image for 5.0.
At erasing User Data it seemed to get stuck, it was there for over 40 minutes. While looking at the device I accidentally knocked the USB cable out and it said failed. Upon rebooting the device I got the Google logo and the bootloader unlocked icon and then the bugdroid with the gear like it's doing an update (THIS: http://scottiestech.info/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Android_Update_Screen.jpg[1] ). It stayed like this for another 40 minutes. I forced it to shut down and tried to get into the bootloader but holding down vol up+vol down+power for almost 60 seconds did nothing.
I then booted it up normally again to the gear bugdroid and left it like that before I went out for almost 6 hours. When coming home it was the same and still stuck on that.
I rebooted again and held down to boot into the bootloader but again it did not boot in over 60 seconds.
So am I hard bricked and should toss this out with the trash tonight or can this be restored somehow.
Are you able to connect to your device using fastboot?
Assuming you have fastboot installed and the drivers installed, open a command prompt and from the directory where your SDK files are (unless you added the directory to your system PATH), type "fastboot devices" without the quotes. What do you get back? If you get back a serial#, you should be able to flash the individual files manually
(Download the factory image from google's site, and extract the files into a folder, and run the flash-all.bat This will wipe all your data out, and assumes your bootloader is already unlocked)
Edit: follow the instructions here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/general/tutorial-how-to-flash-factory-image-t2513701
These are for Nexus 5, but the same steps apply for Nexus 7 as well. Just make sure you download the right factory image for your Nexus 7. Use Method 1

originally there was none, it just said failed and completed. now i'm getting invalid arguments.
I'm still in fastboot mode but literally nothing will flash.
*edit* just tried to use tookit again and
writing 'bootloader'
FAILED <remote: flash write failure>
finished.
Seeing a couple people mention that they fixed errors like this just from using a different usb port or cable. going to try that.
Why didn't you use adb to flash factory image from the get-go? It's the safest way to flash. I would be so mad on your place if device would render useless. But that might be just me since i'm poor. I really hope you manage to fix it.

I knew of that way but the Nexus Tool Kit has always been perfect and I've never had any issues with it so I figured I'd just do it that way to make it easier and well, it didn't happen.
I'm hoping because I can get into fastboot that it's not actually bricked yet but if so then oh well i guess.

Hey all,
I was on android P and wanted to go back to Oreo so i booted twrp and wiped system/data and then afterwards, fastboot is giving me errors and i cant even boot twrp to my phone it just says remote: unknown command. Heres a pic https://imgur.com/a/odn4w
edit: i was able to get the feb image to flash but now im stuck at the loading G screen. If i open fastboot and try fastboot boot twrp i get unknown command. See here https://imgur.com/a/Ropme
Hold the power button while at no command. Then hit volume up and release both. That will give you the menu.
Get rid of minimal adb and fastboot. I don't understand why people are using something made before even the original pixels were released. It doesn't understand dual partitions or handle the larger sizes of our partitions. Get adb and fastboot from Google.

I am using that platform tools and i still get the remote:unknown command error. Any idea what i should do? I already factory reset and relocked and unlocked the bootloader and critical. I cant even boot twrp to flash magisk. it broke when i was on android p i booted twrp and wiped system data cache from slot a and b. Reboot and then fastboot was wonky like it still is now.

Just curious, but when your in the OS, and open a command prompt on the platform-tools folder and type...adb devices...do you see your device ID?? Same thing for when your in bootloader mode and type...fastboot devices...??? ?
did you fix this? im in the same boat, on p beta tried to flash factory image back to 8.1 and getting "target didn't report max download size".
Im using platform tools
OP, have you managed to solve the issue?
I ran into a lot of trouble updating June OTA and had the same error. Tried to change ports, USB cables, etc. and just when I was about to give up, I decided to restart my PC and tried again, this time things worked fine without any issue whatsoever.
This is likely not your issue, but if your computer has less than 4 gigs of RAM, or you are trying to flash a file larger than your available RAM you will get this message.
This (i.e. rebooting PC) worked

Starting to pull my hair out over flashing the Razer Phone

I've been trying to install TWRP and Magisk to the Razer phone for upwards of 3 days now. I cannot get anything to flash through fastboot to the phone no matter what I try. At one point I even said screw it and tried flashing the stock boot image back over to re-lock my bootloader, but no luck, still won't flash.
I was originally following this tutorial here but during the flashing of the boot image it kept failing. Then I tried following the "foolproof" guide found here
I either ended up with the error of "no such file or directory" or "too many links" or "unable to identify current slot". Did a ton of Googling but ultimately came up with no solutions.
I have Android SDK and development studio installed. I have the google drivers installed. I have the Razer phone drivers installed and I have ADB and Fastboot installed.
I have all the files I need on the SD card, and when I'm flashing everything I have the files I need placed in the same folder as the ADB\Fastboot files.
I have my bootloader unlocked, developer mode on and USB debugging enabled. I am using a USB Type A to Type C cable as recommended (made by Anker if it matters). I've tried all 3 USB ports on my laptop. I've even disabled Antivirus.
I have flashed many Android devices in the past and none have given me such a headache as this one. I'm even more ticked off that I can't even get the factory boot image back over to re-lock the bootloader after now realizing that I can't install Netflix anymore because they wen't and blocked installations for Rooted android users (for whatever ridiculous reason).
I will say that for whatever reason that when I go to open command prompt by using the shift+right click I only get the option to use Windows Powershell, not Command Prompt. I also have to put a .\ in front of every command I send. I'm unsure why, but I found no work around for it.
I'd like to try to get the TWRP and Magisk installed. I'm sure I can force Netflix to install over to the phone using another method.
Open to any suggestions!

I feel for you as when things don't work, like someone says they do, it's frustrating. I personally wouldn't be doing everything through power shell but would instead press Windows Key+R to bring up the "Run" dialog box then type "cmd" for command prompt. Trying to restore "command prompt here" to Windows 10 seems stupidly hidden. I'm just not sure if using powershell is messing with your progress.
Second thought is that your Razer phone drivers may not be installed correctly. For me I spent days/hours with my main PC, I then tried another PC and got my phone flashed in minutes. What would happen is that I could send "adb" commands without issue but some of the "fastboot" commands were not working. So at the critical times when it's trying to flash the different portions of our phone, some of them were successful while the others were giving little errors here and there.
I spent a lot of time updating my adb and fastboot commands to newer ones because it seems every time you download someones resources you get a different version. Also the more phones you have owned the more times you have installed specific USB drivers for those phones and they are now hanging around messing things up. There are programs such as USBDeview that will allow you to uninstall those old drivers. For me I had HP drivers from an old tablet, OnePlus drivers, LG drivers, etc.

I've been messing with it today a bunch. I am back to following the "foolproof" guide and this time I have completely uninstalled all my old drivers for anything android or USB or ADB related and reinstalled everything.
All commands work, I am using command prompt now.
What I am getting hung up on now is even after pushing all three files to the SD card, I run the command "fastboot flash boot twrp-3.2.1-0-cheryl.img && fastboot reboot" and it bounces back with " Failed: Write to device failed (no such file or directory)"
I've double checked the file names numerous times. I have no idea what I am doing wrong now. I have tried the command "fastboot boot twrp-3.2.1-0-cheryl.img" as stated in the other tutorial and it bounces back with "failed to identify current slot".
So I'm making progress at least. I'm trying to follow the first set of instructions listed in the fool proof guide but still no luck. I also tried the "clean method" listed below on that guide and that one doesn't work either. Apparently the Fool Proof guide thinks I'm a fool!

I believe that when you run "fastboot flash boot twrp-3.2.1-0-cheryl.img" you are pushing the file called "twrp-3.2.1-0-cheryl.img" that is sitting on your PC's C: or whichever drive you are currently sitting in to the Razer Phone. So make sure the file is in the same directory as where you are running that command. This will then transfer it to the Razer and will reboot into TWRP.
But after you reboot into TWRP you will want to flash the version you have sitting within your SD card to the "recovery" partition. That way it is permanent.

I was finally able to get the phone to accept a flash! I ended up saying screw it and dug a old laptop out, fresh install of windows and installed all the proper drivers onto it.
It worked almost flawlessly. It was able to correctly send the twrp.img file and the phone was able to boot into twrp which is about as far as I got. As it was attempting to load twrp it would "crash" the screen would flash twice and try rebooting back to TWRP.
What ended up happening was it got stuck in a boot loop trying to boot into TWRP. (I haven't even installed TWRP.zip yet, just tried booting the .img file).
I couldn't get the phone to boot to the system anymore. I thought I had a nice $600 paperweight on my hands.
I finally got the phone to go back into the boot loader and flashed all the factory stuff back on and relocked the bootloader. So right now I'm 100% back to stock.
I'm not sure what went wrong in the boot up of the twrp.img file. I'd like to try again but I'm kinda getting sick of wiping the phone Everytime something goes wrong.

I had mine in boot loop, I was able to get it out pretty easily. If your able to get the phone into the bootloader (I did using a fastboot command while it was in a boot loop) you can just execute the script provided by Razer and it does the rest. Took about 10 minutes and I had factory everything back on the phone. Relocked the bootloader after and done, phone fixed.

In my case I actually had to flash the stock boot.img from the May 2018 stock OS. Then I was able to use Razers guide to flash stock again. I haven't locked my bootloader since I still want to give it a try again. But I want to find a reliable way of rooting and then unrooting in case I want to do so in the feature.
So far I haven't found said documentation.
Installed Magisk v17.1 via TWRP loaded in fastboot boot (not fastboot flash boot ie not permanently installed) and so far all seems well. No boot loops when restarting...
Peace

Corrupted Pixel 2 XL

I am unable to reload the system. I always get the message “Your device is corrupt. It can’t be trusted and may not work properly.”

Hi,
How did you end up in this situation?
Is your bootloader unlocked?
Sébastien.
Thanks @Sébastien! Yes the bootloader is unlocked.
I was flashing using this site flash-dot-android-dotcom, because of the fact the the phone's software support will end this year.
Then I had a power outage around 90% in because of a storm in our country.
Now I am unable to flash the phone. The Smartboot commands work, but the adb commands doesn't.
I download multiple adb drivers, tried them all, still doesn't work.

Hi,
Download latest factory image for taimen if you want Android 11: https://dl.google.com/dl/android/aosp/taimen-rp1a.201005.004-factory-f797c86c.zip
If you prefer latest taimen for Android 10: https://dl.google.com/dl/android/aosp/taimen-qq3a.200805.001-factory-305df20c.zip
Extract the one you want to install and locate Flash-all.bat
If you want to keep your device data's, you'll want to edit the file and remove -w. (Search Google or XDA for further infos).
Detailed flashing guide here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-2-xl/how-to/guide-unlock-flash-root-pixel-2-xl-t3702418
Boot your phone in bootloader: power + volume down.
Plug your USB cord and double click Flash-all.bat. Let it do it's job. Reboot afterward.
You'll keep getting a warning, which is normal, since your bootloader is unlocked. If you want to get rid of it, install the firmware and relock the bootloader. Disable OEM unlocking in developer options. Be careful, it will "again" wipe your datas...
Good luck...
Sébastien.

Hello all, I was trying to update to Android 11, from my rooted Pixel 2xl from Android 10. Long story short, I got in a boot loop, so I used Dueces' fix, and now I have the corrupted message when turning it on. I have tried to return to stock, but I get this error message on the last reboot: target reported max download size of 536870912 bytes
archive does not contain 'boot.sig'
archive does not contain 'recovery.img'
failed to allocate -1848340176 bytes
error: update package missing system.img
Anyone know how to fix?
Thank you!

Hi,
This is not a "shime in if you have a similar issue" thread. You may open your own thread. But well, do you have the proper factory image for taimen? Is your USB cable ok? Is your ADB / Fastboot up to date? In the message above yours i posted a link with the latest version. Try this...
Sébastien.
I appreciate your help, even though I have posed my question in the wrong place. To answer, yes, I have everything updated, and downloaded, still I keep getting the same error message.

Many thanks @Sébastien!
Yes I download the latest DB version. Tried using "Android ADB Interface" and "Android ADB Composite Interface" but nothing appears whenever I do a CMD ADB Devices command
I also tried the sideload option you sent below.
This was the result from the Device Message:
E: Signature Verification Failed
E: Error 2

Hi,
If you want to tag an user, tag his/her username. Me > 5.1.
Ex: @5.1
Ok! Well, you can't issue ADB commands while you're in the bootloader. Only fastboot commands work!

Hello,
Did you try to format data and reinstall? Since install doesn't go past vendor, it never gets a chance to format data. Maybe it was corrupted during your online adventure...
Did you try to switch slot and try to install factory image from here?
Try to download the zip again and retry once you switched slot:
fastboot --set-active=a or fastboot --set-active=b
Whichever is not active at the moment. Then reboot to bootloader and proceed.
Did you try to reinstall bootloader.img, boot.img, system.img to both slot?
fastboot --slot all flash
Format data and reinstall?
Well, since I don't have the device, it's a bit hard to troubleshoot further...
Good luck...

Super thanks for al your patience @5.1 Sébastien !
I think the issue must be that none of all the ADB drivers work.
I tried those under "ClockworkMod" and "Google, Inc." and all are updated, I also went to get the USB drivers from the Android SDKs.
Somehow I am unable to make ADB work. Whenever I do CMD "ADB Device" to list things... Nothing shows on the list..... I can only show the Decvice if I do "fastboot devices"
I ran the "flash-all.bat"... and I also used the "deuce-flash-all-v5.0.bat", and OTA
It looks like, the unresolved ADB Plugin is the mailn block to get thing going.

Hi,
I haven't used clockwork stuff since 10 years, so I bet it's pretty much outdated.... Google Inc? Which ones?
Check this guide: https://www.xda-developers.com/adb-fastboot-any-directory-windows-linux/
Download this: https://dl.google.com/android/repository/platform-tools-latest-windows.zip
And install as per the above guide.
Than once you're done, open a simple cmd window, plug your phone in bootloader and issue:
fastboot devices
No need to be in the same folder as ADB.exe or fastboot, you should see your device.
Then re-run the flash-all.bat from your factory image.
Good luck...
Sébastien.

Super thanks for the follow-up solution Sébastien @5.1 !
I tried the above and this is the result"
Sending 'vendor_b' (333468 KB) FAILED (Write to device failed in SendBuffer() (Unknown error))
fastboot: error: Command failed
And the ADB command: ADB devices still gives me this result below
C:\Users\delro>adb devices
List of devices attached
It's still blank.
I used the 3 drivers from Google Inc
1. Android ADB Interfacer
2. AndroidComposite ADB Interface
3. Android Bootloader Interface.
All of these drivers still doesn't show anything when I do "ADB Devices" and displays as blank.
The ADB.exe is accessible, it's just not able to see the device, hence might this be a diver incompatibility issue. But I already tried the latest drivers above and none of them work.

Hello,
You know ADB is not available in bootloader right? Where do you try to use it?
To be honest, If you tried all I wrote since yesterday, I don't know what else I can advise you. I'm sorry...
Good luck.

PS: if you quote someone's message, you don't have to tag him/her (@...). It's either one or the other. :good:

Thanks so much for your efforts in assisting me (and for all the @ and quotes usage LoL)!
As I have done all the items in the list, the only thing I am looking to have work is Pushing a Flash file using "ADB Push" from PC to phone. But none of my ADB drivers even though they are the latest ones don't work. Sideload didn't work also as this might be the same issue too.
Really am super grateful for your kindness helping me all this time, you are awesome bro!
I will go search to more channel how to rectify this thing.
Take care and hope I can repay you in the future!

Update: I finally was able to make the phone work!!!
In a last-ditch effort, I wiped the device, ran the Deuce Script, Reboot, Ran the flash-all.bat, Reboot, went to Recovery Mode > Enable ADB Update > Tried Sideload again of the OTA file, and there you go, I now again have a working device!!!
Thank you Sebastien @5.1 again for all your super kind support and knowledge! Truly am really grateful for your helpfulness!

Question 'fastboot flashing unlock' just brings up command list instead of unlocking

Hey fam, hope you've been keeping well and safe.
I recently bought the Pixel 6 Pro (so happy with it!) and am currently in the process of rooting it.
It's a fairly simple process, and I've done it with all but I'm not sure what's going wrong at the initial unlocking the bootloader stage.
OEM Unlocking & USB Debugging is enabled - I've tried to deactivate/reactive it, used different ports etc. but to no avail.
It just won't unlock, and instead just gives me prompts of commands.
I've attached the screenshots.
What am I missing/doing wrong? Thanks!
are you in fastboot when you are running these commands? boot into fastboot. type the command ' fastboot --version , what version does it output?
run fastboot devices command so your devices appears, then run the unlock command again. make sure you are you using latest platform-tools (not mininal adb etc). also reinstall the driver just in case. then
you can also just go to Android's Flash Tool to unlock the device:
Android Flash Tool
flash.android.com

Thankyou so much for your quick and really helpful reply!
So I've investigated further, and re-installed all the tools/as you mentioned above - still no avail.
There does seem to be some sort of an issue as the fastboot version command responds back with 'version unknown'.
The Android Flash Tool looks like the best solution (didn't even know it existed, so thanks for that!) but I'm unsure how to proceed with it in order to unlock the bootloader (from what I'm gathered you need to have an unlocked bootloader before using it?)
I'm assuming you deselect the 'lock bootloader' option so that the tool unlocks the bootloader and then doesn't relock it? I've attached a screenshot to just check as well.

yeah you need to have OEM Unlocking enabled to use Google's Flash Tool. if you don't need any data, just enable these options in the flash tool: Wipe and Force Flash Partitions. That will unlock the bootloader and wipe/reflash Android. Enabling the "lock bootloader" option will re-lock the bootloader but since you are rooting it, leave it unchecked.
But you should look into why Platform-Tools isn't working on your system. Here are instructions on how to set it up (make sure to remove all other platform-tools)
there's also Nexus Tools from Github (developed my a known tech journalist)
@rajalot besides what @Alekos said, I always go straight to the source for the latest SDK Platform Tools every time I flash anything. Also, Get the Google USB Driver (this is for Windows). Note, a recent experience. I have a Samsung tablet and have the Samsung USB drivers installed. This driver worked perfectly fine for my Pixel 6 Pro too for the last two months, but for June the full factory image would error out trying to flash until I uninstalled Samsung's driver and went back to Google's. So if you have any other device USB drivers installed than Google's, you may have to uninstall those and install Google's.
But yeah, as @Alekos said, the site Official Google Android Flash Tool (OEM Unlocking needs to be toggled on - you may not have to manually unlock the bootloader - the "site" will do that on its own) will get you what you need too although if there's a conflicting driver, you would still have to solve that.
I'm going out on a limb but is this a Verizon p6p?

I hope @rajalot updates us, although they said they did enable OEM Unlocking (and seem to be indicating that they have since re-disabled and re-enabled it, although that can be interpreted differently), which would usually indicate that they're not using a Verizon device. Weird, huh? I'm guessing the Platform Tools version is the culprit, but I'd like to hear back to confirm.
