PSA: Just figured out that NextRadio (FM Radio) works on my AT&T Note 4. - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note 4

I thought I knew every function of my Note 4 by now. But, read an article on CNet that mentioned the NextRadio Free Live FM Radio app. I downloaded it from the Play Store & it installed just fine (even though AT&T Note 4 isn't on the devices list). Typed in my zip code (I didn't want to allow location) and it worked! Like a charm.
So, 3 years after buying my Note 4, I'm listening to live FM Radio for the first time today. But, after using the app for a few minutes and checking the settings of a station once it's playing, I think it's using streaming audio, not the FM radio chip. This is based on the NextRadio FAQ page here: http://nextradioapp.com/faq/

Sorry to burst your bubble, but... I don't think you are actually getting FM radio...
NextRadio now has a streaming mode for incompatible devices. I turned off my Wifi, and turned on "Stream over WIFI only" and poof... FM radio went away.
This is from their FAQ:
NextRadio now has a Streaming Mode which allows you to listen on devices that aren't FM-enabled, listen to stations outside your local area, and send the audio over Bluetooth. Like other streaming apps, Streaming Mode will use more data and deplete your battery more quickly.
Streaming Mode is currently only available in the United States.

That's what I eventually figured out (from 2nd paragraph of my post): "But, after using the app for a few minutes and checking the settings of a station once it's playing, I think it's using streaming audio, not the FM radio chip. This is based on the NextRadio FAQ page..."

[Q] FM Radio CM7.1, Scan stations?

I just rooted and flashed CM7.1. It's working perfectly and is blazing fast.
I need to take a few trips to Canada in the next couple weeks. Normally for my radio needs I would use streaming radio (car FM radio is broken in my 99 Accord, aux works fine), but since I want to avoid data roaming charges that's not an option.
I tested out the FM Radio and it works just fine. Strong signal and everything. The only problem is I can't scan for stations. I tried Spirit FM but the scan function doesn't seem to work.
Anyone got a solution for me?
I use TuneIn Radio so I can listen to NPR on the way to work. I just realized you can browse stations by country too! May want to check it out.

This doesn't use FM it uses data, so it's not what he's looking for.

[Q] bluetooth metadata

I don't think this is a Note II question directly, but the Note II is what I have experience with, so I'll ask here.
I went to Best Buy to try out bluetooth pairing my phone with the car stereos. Aside from the pain of trying to get some of them connected, in the end I was able to see song metadata using the stock music player, but not spotify. I searched the web and it appears spotify doesn't have AVRCP 1.3 (yet?) which is supposedly the reason for this.
Then I decided to make a more prepared trip: besides the former two apps, I additionally loaded Pandora, Slacker Radio, Last.FM, MOG, and iHeartRadio. I went back to Best Buy and found while for the most part I could get any of them to play/stop/fwd/rev, none of them showed the metadata. One exception is I was able to get one ($500) stereo to do Pandora (including album art), although then I could never get it out of Pandora mode (I didn't spend too long at that, I was tired of testing by that point).
So my questions are:
1. There seem to be three versions of AVRCP: 1.0, 1.3, 1.4 but I can't find which the Note II has. I'm guessing it's at least 1.3 because the stock player was able to pass metadata. Anyone know?
2. Is it really true that basically every app is missing support for passing metadata? Or is this related to the specific Note II ROM or the stereo firmware?

If you use Spotify or Pandora, there are modified apps that support metadata.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2081475 is one for spotify.

[Q] Display Song info over bluetooth in Car

I was wondering if anybody could tell me if their Bluetooth in car setup displays the song info on their display in-car. If it does, what app are you using? I am using Doubletwist and it doesn't display the song info in my car. I'm pretty sure its not a limitation in the car, more an app issue.
So, I guess ultimately, a list of music player apps that send song info over Bluetooth in-car is what I am looking for.
I think only a custom ROM like AOSP and CM10 can actually do this.

I have all my music loaded into Google music and since Sprint is horribly slow I rarely stream music while driving, I use a thumb drive or CD's. I have a Kenwood DNX9180 and I never paid attention to what was on the radios display.
What brand of radio are you using?
I will load some songs on my phone a give it a test. I use to use Winamp as a media player because they had cool internet radio stations.
I would imagine with the A2DP profile it should display song/track info(metadata) and with AVRCP you should be able to control the phone from the radio. It may be a software issue with the radio and not with the phone.
A few weeks ago I installed a Pioneer AVHP2400Bt into a customers car and he had a new iPhone 5. It would not display the metadata on the screen while streaming but with the USB it would. On the website it said Pioneer is coming out with a firmware update for IOS 6.

I am using the stock radio from Honda in the 2012 CRV. I am pretty positive it is an issue with the apps (or like the guy said before thinking you have to be on ASOP or CM10). I am using the paranoid android rom on Verizon gnex now so I dunno. Can anyone test any of these theories out?

Try asking in Honda forums. I have a 2010 Mazda with BT and AUX in, but I've never gotten any sort of text display to show. Even though my car dashboard has buttons for "text" and "disp", they don't do anything.

I read a little further, and it seems what we need is AVRCP 1.3 support (1.0 doesn't cut it) in both phone and car.
Then I found this thread which concludes that AOSP JB doesn't have it, whereas CM ICS ROMs did. Later on, someone ported it to a JB (toro) ROM, and the code was merged into AOKP.
Any AOKP nightlies past 8-8-12 should include them.

It used to display in my car when i had a stock rom on my samsung galaxy s3 and i changed rom to AOSP cyanogenmod 10.1 and now it stopped displaying music info. I think the rom bluetooth feature is not paired correctly

I found that Pandora does send track info via bluetooth but is not usable worldwide. I haven't found another program yet that sends the info.

Pandora on car radio not working.

Has anyone successfully gotten pandora to stream to another device. My car radio doesn't seem to work with Pandora anymore.

I came from an Iphone 4 and have Kenwood DNX99x0 installed in two cars. I tried using Pandora with my kid's ICS phone and it worked perfectly so I assumed it would work with Note 2. NOT.
Apparently, Note 2 has a newer version of Bluetooth version 4 which the Kenwood cannot handle. Contacted Kenwood tech support and no help. They will not support it as the force you to upgrade to their newer models - Kenwood sucks in this respect. They are busy fighting with Crapple's new connector too.
If you use the "bluetooth" audio setting on the radio, Pandora will work but you will not see any album art, not be able to change you stations, but will be able to pause and play from the radio.
What I ended up doing to get the radio Panador interface working is connecting my old Iphone 4, refreshed with new IOS connected to the old Kenwood Iphone cable with WIFI turned on in airplane mode. I have the wonderful new ROM that let's me wifi teather so the the old Iphone goes through the Note 2 to connect to internet and Pandora works perfectly. I am sure you could do similar with any older phone.

Im using Kenwood KDC-X996 / KDC-BT952HD And Bluetooth works fine. Pandora does not work on the Note2 But it does work on the Note1, S3. It has something to do with JB. And the Pandora on these headunits allow trackskip and thumbs up and down.

Any suggestions for a good FM radio/tuner?

I want an FM radio/tuner. I just reROMed my phone to Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean, and lost the original FM radio app. I don't use mobile internet, so can't stream stations, so I need a regalar FM radio.
I searched Google Play, but they all seem to be streaming apps, except FM Two 0: which says it won't run on my phone as it doesn't have reckogised RDS hardware. FM Radio by Sutton Shin, doesn't do anything, just sits there saying FM Radio is being launched. Please wait...
Spirit FM Radio is a "pay for" app, which I don't have problem with, but would like to know if it actually works on the Gio.
SPIRITFM works fine
Thanks, I'll give it a go.

I tried all apps avaliable for Gio and SpiritFM is the only one that works other than the stock radio app.
I also tried lot's of radio apps, but the only one's i liked are TuneIn Radio Pro and XiiaLive. TuneIn seems to be the best with unlimited radio stations and new ones added periodically. If you want it free Xiia live iyour choice.
But i advice you to try TuneIn Radio Pro ( it gets lot's of local radio stations too).
