Looking in settings I can't seem to set a different sound for different notifications. IE email sounds different than SMS.
Really? Clearly Android is in need of some 'Mobile Phone' settings.
This was one of my 1st gripes and the way round for me is to use 3rd part apps
1. Disable notifications in Settings
2. Install Handscent SMS and set it to play what ever sound when you get a SMS
3. Install Gmail Popup and set this to play a different sound for Emails received
Works for me and makes my Desire more desirable

Try looking in the apps themself rather than in settings!
i.e. change Gmail notifications in GMail, SMS notifications in your messaging app etc et.

Dave
Yikes... Every mobile phone since like 1982 has been able to change this in one place. I knew I was going to have a few problems with android but wow.
Is there an official place to submit enhancement (20 years ago) requests to the android development team?

You rather miss the point. Since Android allows all sorts of new applications, with all sorts of potentially new notifications, there is no way you can have a "one stop shop" for notifications.
I have 4 email accounts setup in Gmail, and each of them has a different notification sound. It would be very hard to achieve this if notification sounds were handled centrally.

Dave
And if you don't change the sound in an app it uses the default one as set in the 'Sound' settings in the menu, under 'Notification sound'
on my prior HTC EVO 3D there was a widget that looked identical to the VVM app icon that would show the number of voicemails you have.
I don't know if that was specific to HTC or not but I don't see the widget on the Note 2. I looked around and saw references to a voicemail widget on the Galaxy S3 so it made me think I am missing something.
Thanks
I had the same problem but installing an older version of Voicemail gave me the widget. It would disappear though upon rebooting the phone.
I would like to install a widget too for voicemail whether it be from the Sprint app or a 3rd party app.

Google Voice has one, as does Youmail. I dont know of a 3rd party widget for Sprint VVM.

Need one for Sprint Visual Voicemail. The others will not work with this as they are there own service.
Thanks for the suggestions though.

HTC has a sense widget that is a duplicate of the voicemail icon but is a widget that shows # of voicemails. Something like that would be perfect here.
In the meantime, I swapped over to Google Voice and am using Nova Launcher Prime with the TeslaUnread addin. TeslaUnread supports putting a missed voicemail count on the Google Voice icon.
I am gonna send the TeslaUnread developer an email request for support for dropping a missed voicemail count on the Visual Voicemail icon.
Google is starting the wonderful process of pushing out a new update to one of our most used apps, Hangouts. The Google Hangouts app hasn’t been updated since February when it received v2.0.303. The update that is rolling out this week will bring it to v2.1. A whole number update usually means there will be a lot of goodies inside. A G+ post from Mike Dodd gave a quick highlight of what is new.
- Merged conversations: SMS and Hangout conversations with the same recipient are now combined into a single conversation. You can control whether you want to send a message via Hangouts or SMS with the flip of a switch, and different message types will be easy to tell apart in the conversation. Of course, you can always merge and unmerge conversations if you’d like.
- Simplified contact list: now there’s two main sections in contacts — People you Hangout With, and Phone Contacts — making it simpler to navigate, and easier to use for SMS.
- Homescreen widget: add the Hangouts widget to your homescreen for quick access to your recent conversations.
- Performance improvements: today’s update includes better quality video calls, as well as improved SMS and MMS reliability.
The home screen widget is a 3×3 that can be resized to fit your screen and offers up a list view of your conversations. Tapping on one will open up the hangouts app into that conversation. It is also scrollable.

The merged SMS and Hangouts conversations that allow you to choose how you want to communicate with the recipient is definitely a feature many were really wanting.
I also see a much clearer view of my messages compared to one my friend sends with a color change so that not all text bubbles are the same color.
We will play about a bit more with it and let you know if we catch anything else. If you are super eager to get your hands on the new update, grab the APK from http://gappsearly.com/google-apps/hangouts/viewdownload/7-google-hangouts/126-google-hangouts.html
Nice one! Thanks

Anyone know if there are Hangouts themes? Not sure I like the plain white...

I'm trying to use Xposed and App Settings to control the DPI of the in-call UI, but I can't figure out which app to apply the settings to. I've tried all the logical ones (anything with call or dialer or phone in the name), but no dice so far.
I'm not talking about the contacts app where the dialer is, but the actual in-call UI.
This appeared as a pushed update in the app itself, going into settings/ about. It adds expandable UI in contacts while in the app, and multiple contacts selection in contact list when in the app also.
noticed the same, without a detailed changelog it's a no go for me.
In Message app, the feature 'filter spam by phrases' is gone. How to get it back?
