Warning about Tech 21 Evo Case - Google Pixel 2 Accessories

I purchased two Tech 21 Evo Check ($39.95) - https://rhinoshield.io/products/goog...l-2-pixel-2-xl and I received them today to find out they have a headphone jack near the USB-C charger port. I called asking if this was a mistake and they assured me this feature is intentional, but don't know why the feature is there.
I expressed my disappointment with the product and asked for a refund but want to ensure other XDA members know what to expect from a case priced at $39.95.
https://imgur.com/a/jYhz4
Also, any recommendations on a slim case that will protect from drops similar to Tech21 without the added "headphone feature"?

Sure it's not for a microphone hole? My TPU Pixel 2 case has a hole there as well but not big enough for a headphone jack.

Based on videos and pictures, that is for the microphone but that is a HUGE hole. Maybe it looks huge because its thick.
A close look at the Pixel 2 XL and there's a hole at the top - https://www.verizonwireless.com/accessories/tech21-evo-check-case-for-pixel-2-xl/

I know i'm only looking at a picture but that hole does not seem big enough for a 3.5mm head phone jack.

I'm embarrassed but glad I've found it is NOT a headphone jack. It is a microphone array.
Mods, please delete this thread as it serves only negative purpose due to my ignorance.
I did update Tech21's support about it in case they get calls about it so they know what to tell people like myself that don't have the phone yet and wonder what is up with the design.

Def mic array. and that's one ugly case lol

If I get the Pixel 2 XL I'm going with this case:
https://www.spigen.com/collections/google-pixel-2/products/google-pixel-2-xl-case-rugged-armor
Have it for my first gen XL and really like it as far as cases go. Adds minimal bulk and has corner protection. Not too bad looking either.

[Q] Good Phone Stand For Galaxy Nexus

Hey all, I work in at a desk job where I am allowed to listen to podcasts and music all day so I use my phone all day every day at my desk. Currently I have the droid incredible that has the charging usb port on the left side and the headphone jack on the top. This allows me to lean my dinc against my monitor stand and put the bottom part on a gel pad so I can easily do things on the phone without it slipping down on my desk and falling flat. The phone rests at about a 110-120 degree angle so relatively vertical. This set up is perfect for me and allows me to have my phone right in front of my keyboard easily visible and accessible.
This leads me to a question with the Galaxy Nexus. This will be my next phone and my only gripe is that the usb port and headphone jack are both on the bottom of the phone which makes it so I cannot simply set my phone on the gel pad and lean it against the monitor stand. My question is, does anyone know of any phone stands that allow the phone to be positioned in such a way but have enough clearance on the bottom to plug in the usb cable and headphone jack? I have looked at a couple on amazon but they all seem to block the bottom still. I know the nexus s has a similar design so I was curious what kind of cradles they created for that phone and I like the vertical charging cradles but none offered audio out. I'm worried that will be the case for this phone as well.
Please offer your suggestions on a good stand to fit my situation. Thanks in advance!
I *think* this might work for your particular circumstance, although I'm not sure if the "flap" of the stand is going to block the headphone jack. If it does, you might still be able to use it sideways.

Good luck!
yep, and im used the sgp stand, and is great, you can find it on stg website.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have an elago stand for my galaxy tab 10.1 and love it. Unfortunately I don't think it will work for the nexus. I think the tab at the bottom would be in the way of the headphone jack .

I've also considered this mount. I am worried though due to the contoured shape of the nexus as well as the textured back. I'm not sure how well it would adhere to this. Something to consider though...Thank you!
Found this bad boy: http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/samsung-desk-stand-for-galaxy-nexus-edd-d1f2begstd-p33498.htm?nocookie=1. I hope there is room for a case in in...
Yeah, the official vertical charging dock would be a perfect fit, and it also has audio out.
I use a business cars stand form staples for all my phones. =-)

Agreed. It would be the perfect storm if it was big enough to fit a nexus with a case on it. Oh well, guess you can't win them all...

[Q] Does your GNII wobble/rock when it's laying on a flat surface?

Hi,
I'm thinking of getting a GNII. Since it's pretty big, I'll probably be using it while laying it on a flat surface.
Watching this review, I got a bit worried:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=VdsMwGWvhO4#t=205s
Doe anyone else's GNII behave like that? if so, is it very noticeable/annoying?
Thanks.
Yes, they all do it if they are bare. The speaker grill has a raised hump on it so that is not touching the desk so the sound on speaker phone isn't muted.
It's a design feature not a fault.
The video reviewer is a fud if he didn't realise that.

Thanks for that info.
So the more import question is, is it noticeable or annoying? Will I be able to live with it?
With a nice dual layer case, it sits flat and has no wobbles.

I would love to help you, but help yourself first: ask a better question
http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html
I have mine in one case or another so don't notice it but I could see if could be annoying if you had your phone flat on a table and you are typing on it.
Realistically though would it not be in a case? Even the thinist of cases would hide it.
But then you won't hear the speaker as well

Yeah, I guess you're right. I think I'll also be getting a case when I get my GNII.
Thanks guy

Hybrid case that has headphone port large enough for most jacks?

I have the Spigen Neo Hybrid. I really like its functionality, EXCEPT for the fact that I cannot use any headphone adapter with it. I use my phone with various plugs and none of them will fit due to the small holes in this case. I refuse to take my case on and off when I want to listen to music.
I need a case that is a dual layer. I want that extra protection. I like the slimness that this Neo Hybrid offers. Is there another case out there that would suit my needs? (i.e., allow me to use my regular cords to play music from different speakers and outlets?) I do not want to add bulk to the phone. So nothing clunky like Otter Box looking.
Thanks for anyone that chimes in.
I can tell you that the headphone port is no bigger on the 2nd gen then on the first gen of the spigen slim armor case. It's still to small. I may end up waiting until january sometime and get a case with a built in extended battery.

I could find a set of headphones if that is all I needed. The thing is, I use my phone to listen to music/ Pandora on 3 different sets of speakers . None of these speaker adapters fit through my case. It's really frustrating.

Maybe you could search for some kind of "adapter", something like this
http://www.amazon.com/Griffin-Techn...eo-accessories&ie=UTF8&qid=1385945005&sr=1-14 (for the iphones)
I don't know if that could work on any android, but something like that should already exist, im kinda sure..

I thought about that, too. I was not sure about where to actually extend the holes. Would you do it towards the back of the case? Tell me what you were thinking. I am not too scared to try it.

Yes, I got one of those things from Walmart as a "bandaid" right now. It distorts the sound quality. And quite honestly, I don't want to walk around with an adapter connected to my phone all day, nor try to keep up with it. I just really want a case that works!!

The problem is that in your case you'll be jumping off from the pro (Neo Hybrid/Slim Armor) wagon. Those are by far the best cases for the Nexus 5 and there's not anything close to that.

I wouldn't. If you widen that hole enough to be useful to you, it's going to break the plastic band...

just got my neo hybrid today
Came in the mail this morning and I love it! I felt like i was pimping, until I found out I can't use my head phone jack. How was this possible? Can't believe they would sell it like this. I love it too much to part with it. There has to be a better way.
I've been using these - known as AirBuds - sold exclusively online - $40 or $60 for 2 pairs, sometimes on sale for 25% off.
The inline buds has smart mic control, fit perfectly in the Spigel Ultra Hybrid case and another rugged bumper case that I'm using for the N5 - the foam tips offer great sound isolation w/o need for noise cancellation.
It works in the iPads as well HTC & Nexus 7 that we owned, and the flat cord is tangle-free.
http://www.air-buds.com/product/ - they are also on Facebook
What kind of monster headphone jacks are you guys using that it won't fit in these cases? I've used all sorts of cases and never once had an issue with port size.

This is incorrect, just basic run-of-the-mill (means common) jacks nothing special. Like ones that work in other cases with no issue. Its just this case is picky about using a specific size jack.

From the creators of the Rhinosheild Screen guard: a "Crash Guard Bumber"

Hello all,
the guys from Rhinosheild launched a new product on Kickstarter. Currently it's only for IPhone but if we gather some people around here, they might do a bumber for our Z3C, too!
Anyone interested? Just post here and let me know if you would want it or why not!
If you want to know more about the bumber just look at their Kickstarter page:

Fantastic! Please, cover all flaps area leaving accessible only the magnetic connector.

That's actually a great idea. I like it

Looks great but I'm not interested unless the bumper becomes a case for the back too - remember my phone is MADE OF GLASS what use is a bumper when the back is exposed (and I'm not going to class a *stick on* film as a suitable protection for the rear)

I'll by it :good:
Problem with makers is they're looking for volumes which is why you see gazzilions of things for iPhones & Samsung galaxies, which all sell by the boatload. Lower volume selling devices don't get a look in.

and headphone jack please. I'm interested. I already have placed order for front and back rhino shield so a bumber would complete the set nicely.
+1 "cover all flaps"
but it should be magnetic charger compatible... :good:
I would love one as well. With just headphone and magnetic ports exposed.
Same here, I saw that the other day and thought it was a shame they didn't make one for the Z3c. So yes definitely would be interested if like the others said before me it has the jack and the magnetic port accessible.
Yep me too, as others have said, keep it covered, and just expose the magnetic port , there seems to be no good cases made for this phone.
If they had one of these for the z3c, I would buy it in a heartbeat. Cover everything except the headphone port (even the mag port if that's what's needed to make this structurally sound). Popping off the bumper at night to charge wouldn't bother me a bit.
I've just emailed them about it, see if I get a response...
Yessssss! Do it! Thank you for taking the action ?

Any idea on speaker location?

I haven't seen anything regarding speaker location. I assume it's not gonna be front facing.

Correct. It's on the bottom, and, only one.

I think it's an extremely strange design choice to not have front facing speakers on any phone (not just the Pixel). If I need to use the phone speaker(s), I really can't think of any situation where I would want the sound pointed away from me. I don't have any of my home stereo or TV speakers facing the wall or floor, and I wouldn't want the same in a phone when I'm trying to consume content. It seems similar to having speakers in your car installed on the outside facing away from you. If I'm having a conversation with someone, I don't talk to the floor or turn around and talk away from the person. I don't understand what benefit the bottom or rear facing speakers give anyone.
Also, I'm sure it's not this simple for the designers and engineers, but on the Pixel, if the speakers are already at the bottom of the phone, wouldn't it seem simple to just have them pointing towards you, instead of down? They could be installed in literally the same place, just with a different orientation.
I'm hoping when they single firing that they mean it's just a single firing into the space into the bottom part of the phone and comes out both speakers. It's mono sound but at least it comes out both slits instead of just one. Wishful thinking though. I feel like they had a spec wishlist that they created back in 2014 or something.

Hmmm, now that I think of it, it could be for the microphone. Here's the video where I noticed it... He even plays some music.

There is only one speaker....I think the bottom right....but there are two holes just like the iPhone....it is there for symmetry. Just like the top bezel is the size it needs to be to accommodate headphone jack and other stuff....so for symmetry they made the bottom bezel the same size. I wish it was unsymmetrical for the bezel and had a smaller bezel...hence lager screen size with the same phone dimensions.
