Can I trade-in rooted phone? - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

Just got my trade-in kit in the mail today. It does not have any in-depth information, neither does any of the emails I received in regards to trade-ins.
Just curious, can I turn in my unlocked+rooted XL? Or do I have to unroot/lock it prior to sending it in?
I successfully traded in a rooted phone to big red a few years ago, but no experience with google. Any pointers will be appreciated! Thanks.

I would recommend to unroot and relock, correct me if I am wrong once u unlock and root, your warranty is Void. It takes half hour to unroot and relock.. do it and don't take the chance

I think you have to factory reset before you send it in. Doesn't that unroot it? Then lock it with one simple command. Shouldn't take more than 5 min.
Sent from my Pixel using XDA-Developers Legacy app

if you are returning it anyway
just unroot/lock it prior to sending
it will not take long time to do anyway

the factory reset that you are asked to perform prior to sending it in will unroot it...

Thanks everyone! Forgot that resetting unroots it.
Also, reached out to google, this is what I got-

Zach you have to unroot the device first.
Apart from that your device is good for trade in.

Just unroot, but bootloader can stay unlocked?

Yes.

Zach you also have to upload the official build/ROM.
That's all after that your device is good for trade in.

I took my Lg V10 pulled my sd card and just did a full wipe and reinstalled the rom. Never heard anything.

Doing a factory reset does NOT unroot the phone. The correct way is to flash the factory images then lock the bootloader.

No it doesn't root would still be in the boot image you just remove the root apk on factory reset

Agree with spaceman860, you would need to flash the factory image...

for the intent and purpose here, doing a factory reset will not allow root to function.
they do not check for the files to be there, only that the phone has been reset.
so for the purpose here, it is unrooted, and reset as per the instructions.

I'll take a few minutes and flash the latest stock image, make sure it boots to the welcome screen, then relock the bootloader.
It doesn't take that long and you can be sure it's been reset, and Root will be gone.
Make sure it boots before you relock....

You can make a warranty or insurance claim with a phone that is rooted so I'd expect that trade-in would have the same rules but that's just my guess.

[Q] Should I unroot and relock my bootloader before returning Nexus 7?

I am yet another victim to dead pixels and pretty bad screen bleed so I will be returning my Nexus 7 to Walmart and picking up a new one from OfficeMax.
Should I relock my bootloader and unroot or just format data and leave it up to Walmart? I assume they are just going to send it back to Asus. What are the chances that there will be any kind of trouble since my warranty is technically void since I unlocked the bootloader and rooted it.
Thanks ahead of time.
If it were me I would unroot it and relock the bootloader just to be safe.
Im looking to unroot mines as well but dont know where to get the files to flash back to stock through fastboot, any help is appreciated...thnx

AFAIK Google has yet to release the stock image for the N7 2013.

Yep, but a few minutes on Google or XDA search will yield you some images dumped from real-life Flo units, so you're good on that front for now.

Always do your own data formatting to be on the safe side. It's not like companies will maliciously steal your data, but mistakes happen and people can be careless. With Nexus devices, by the way, your warranty is basically protected so long as you go back to stock.

...a true system image will do no such thing. You do know what an image is, right? It's an exact copy of the state of storage media at the time of the image's creation. If you flash any image-- stock, modified, whatever-- it will overwrite whatever you tell it to overwrite.
You're mixing up the images with the flash-all script Google is nice and includes for you in their downloads.

I just did it because I'm sending both my original with all the screen issues (backlight bleeding, dead pixels) along with the "replacement" that was on the charger for about three hours and then decided to up and die all together back for a refund. The image flashed just fine so the device is now relocked and hopefully I can get my money back.

question....if you're rooted on stock ROM and just relock the bootloader....doesn't that wipe everything anyway? isn't that a security feature of unlocking and relocking the bootloader? or will it retain root.

It only wipes it when you unlock so locking it after changing anything will give you a device with a locked boot loader in the condition it was when you relocked it.
Factory images have been released by the way...

[Q] Rolling back to 4.3

I've just upgraded to 4.4 here on my Nexus 7 which has broken Kingsoft office which I require for my work.
Whilst I wait for a fix from Kingsoft, is there any way to roll back to 4.3 without voiding my warranty?
Thanks in advance.
Try quick office. It's free and works fine.
If you still want to roll back, you can do without voiding warranty
Download the one click factory restore from here
http://liciousroms.com/nexus7Gen2_restore.html
and some instructions and info here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2381582
also your bootloader needs to unlocked for it to work and you will lose your data if you unlock the bootloader now.
There might be better options though. Wait for someone more knowledgeable to reply.

Thanks for that. The reason I need to use Kingsoft is because I need the data validation function on the spreadsheets with drop down boxes for what's allowed.

You can rollback to 4.3 system software however if you try to keep your user data your system will hang at boot. If you have a backup of your 4.3 user data then that is not a big deal. Alternatively if you wipe data factory reset from recovery that will get things working again.
You do need to unlock your bootloader and flash the factory images though.

You need to have the bootloader unlocked to flash anything unsigned. Currently the only thing Google sends out that is signed are the OTAs. There is no OTA from KRT16S/O back to JSS15*, so your only option is to use a factory restore. Since the factory restores shipped so far are not signed, you need to unlock bootloader.
You can unlock the bootloader here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2379618
During the process of unlocking bootloader, the system will wipe your userdata and sdcard for security reasons.
The post you reference assumes your bootloader is already unlocked.
So, you got two options left.
You need to unlock the bootloader under both methods. Remember it wipes user data completely.
After unlocking you can either flash the factory image for 4.3 or use the one click factory restore.
Personally I feel one click factory restore is easier

Yes, but I may be mistaken but unlocking the boot loader may constitute as voiding the warranty as well.
You would have to unlock it, which will wipe, downgrade to 4.3, then relock it to make it look stock.
Thanks guys I'm back on 4.3. How do I re-lock the boot loader?

You can get back to the 4.3 ROM w/o wiping user data (as a result of the unlock)
However the 4.3 ROM will not boot (will hang at X animation) with your user data once the 4.4 upgrade process has completed on your user data, so you will probably end up wiping user data anyway to get the boot to complete.

Boot to bootloader (Power+VolDown)
in command prompt in your SDKs platform-tools directory
fastboot oem lock
Unlike unlocking, you will NOT have to wipe user data when locking.
Locking just sets a flag so it is very fast.
However, I would leave it unlocked if I were you and you are not selling it or getting warranty work done. If you ever need to unlock again you are going to be in the same boat of losing all of your data.

latest version is compatible with kitkat
Let me ask a question. I've got my bootloader unlocked and I've downloaded the stock 4.3.2 from the Google Developer's site. If I don't want to do the one click restore can someone point me in the right direction for a good step by step? I've looked at a couple of different ones but none looked right or I'm not reading things correctly. To be honest I can't find the one I read from a couple of days ago. It addresses dealing with the tarball you get when you download the image from Google, but I'm really really bad about not using bookmarks. So I'm kinda stuck at this point now. Thanks in advanced.

[Q] Going from ROM'd to FACTORY stock questions

Hello,
It's been a while since I visited the forums so bear with me here.
I recently bought a G3 off the 'Bay and the seller rooted and put a ROM in it. I want to go back to factory settings with it's original functions.
My question is will it UNROOT my phone and DE-UNLOCK it? I'm more worried of the latter. It was originally a T-Mo phone.
Thank you.
PS
Yes I've searched on how to go about the "factory reset" on YouTube. Seems fairly easy and I've had prior experience on doing this thing on my past phones.
anyone?
To go from rooted phone with a custom rom you'll have to download a stock rom of your choice be it lollipop or kitkat. You'll be able to find one in one of the lg g3 threads. You'll also have to download flash tool . which is somewhere round here too. which has full step by step instructions to use it .
Use the tool and it will unroot your phone and take you back to total factory /stock lg g3
---------- Post added at 11:06 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:05 AM ----------
Ps factory reset will not remove the custom rom . it will just wipe data etc
Thanks.
Can you shed light on my 2nd concern? Will I have to re-unlock my phone or does it stay unlocked if I went "back to stock".

The phone was unlocked when I got it. It was originally a T-Mo phone but I'm not using it in the US at the moment. I don't want to spend $X to re-unlock it.
My fear is that the phone will be "locked" again to T-Mo.
anyone?

Can Someone explain this to me?

Can anyone look at my screen shot of my phone specs and point me in the right direction to do a factory flash on my phone?
I do have a Best Buy store near me but there is no Samsung Experience Service Center.
Im not sure if I was looking for the right ODIN file
I thought that they locked rollback on coc5 and coc6. So if memory serves me correctly you can't flash vackwards. (Other xda members said this originally.)

I am intentionally staying on COC4 for this specific reason.
Thank you for the imput. No need to fubar the device then.
See for my unlock code they told me I need to do a factory reset to reset the counter for the unlock code attempts to be reset and if that didn't work to do a factory flash.. arnt they the same thing??

a factory reset can be done on the device and wipes personal data, while a factory flash is the entire system and partition is rewritten. i believe this is all.
Thank you. Ive done the factory reset but what I need to do is do the factory flash. The stock firmware that I got on the site here did not work. When I ran it through Odin it states that it failed. Any suggestions? Unfortunately the Best Buy in my area does not have a Samsung experience center that people keep telling me to go to.

Device State - locked

I know there are other threads regarding this but those included someone having TWRP already flashed and in this case I do not.
I sadly took a chance and bought a Nexus 5X off someone on Kijiji and it looks like I got got scammed.
I've own other Nexus phones in the past but was unaware of the OEM Lock on the latest devices and it is in a locked state and I do not know the google account to unlock it (as it wasn't my phone prior to this)
None of the fastboot/adb commands work as it is locked.
I just wanted to know if there was any other way I could fix this or if I have brick on my hands here. Any assistance would be amazing as this would mean I just blew my money away.

Sadly you may be right, but like any good thief he seems to be unreachable, so I unfortunately can't get the money back. I have checked the IMEI and it is clean so i should be able to activate it.
I just need a way to bypass the FRP (Factory Reset Protection). I've seen posts on this on XDA but they are for patches up to the March 1st Patch. I build I have is the March Patch and I can't seem to find any workarounds for this patch level.
In the event that someone has found a way please let me know as it would save me a lot of grief.

I don't know if will help, but the N preview may not include or may reset FRP. Usually OTAs only include the changed files but since the N preview was bricking locked phones, Google released full OTAs that contained everything. You could try flashing it with ADB while in the stock recovery.

I was thinking the same thing but I don't want to make the situation worse than it already is. I have seen vids from RootJunky showing that the N preview is bypassable and it can be done with a reset.
Will the OTA wipe all the data on the device?

Bummer. I was going to suggest THIS. But there isnt a 16 TOT file.
So you were able to successfully flash N from the stock recovery? And you simply couldnt get past the login screen? FRP is a *****. I had no idea what it was when I sold my Moto X Pure Edition last year. I ended up giving the guy I sold it to my password so he could unlock it. That was after about a day of searching for a workaround. Then my sis bought a G4 and when it arrived it was locked with FRP. We ended up finding a tool to wipe it out. Such a pain. Lol. Good luck finding a solution. Let us know if you get it working some other way.

I unfortunately don't have a sim to test with. The one in my current is a micro not a nano. I am going to contact a repair store tomorrow to see if they can assist and I will try it out.
Sorry yes I did exactly as he suggested and it didn't work.
It gives me the option during setup to setup like it was a new phone but then as soon as I connect to my WiFi it performs a check and states the same reset message.
Which is why I might be thinking that it is the 72 hour lock on and maybe it will go away once it is complete.

I would try it again. If you factory reset from within android, it should disable FRP, including the need to wait 72 hrs.
I wouldn't bother with the repair shop. The latest and greatest info is going to be on the internet and probably from rootjunky.
