Hello!
I have bought recently a Sony Xperia XA1 Ultra and I´m experiencing this problem with its microphone. Sometimes when Im recording a voice message in WhatsApp, the mic sort of "shuts off" in the middle of recording, where my friend then hears some static noises and the voice message ends abruptly, even though it should have run longer. Has anyone experienced the same problem and could tell me how to solve this?
Thanks!

The problem is an issue with microphone permissions from another app that is still running in the background. For me it seems that Facebook messenger seems to disable my microphone entirely. Any video recorded with my camera has no audio. Snapchat no audio, can't use speakerphone during a call but regular phone calls with phone up to head work fine. I've been using an appkiller to disable all running apps and this eliminates the issue. This has been a problem since I bought the phone in august or july, along with anything audio played from the phone cutting off gradually as if someone was slowly turning down the volume. I'd check the volume and it was up to max. Sony issued an update in august that seemed to fix the problem but now it's back as of the last update a few weeks ago. I'm also having problem with bluetooth turning off as soon as it turns on and white bright spots behind the screen that bestbuy tells me is water damage however the phone has never near anything wet ever.

Hmm interesting! I didn´t install Facebook Messenger on my phone, so it must be some other app, that the mic has a problem with, I´ll play around with them then. But thank you for your reply, hopefully Sony will release another update soon, that will fix these issues! Although I didn´t encounter any problems with audio, bluetooth or the screen spots ... yet  Sounds terrible though!
Having similar problem mic works when it wants to but will not work in regular calls didn't have this problem until the oreo update and Sony has no clue how to fix it they replaced the mic but it still fails it passes all test just won't work in call. Tried to reset used the Sony repair app, prayed to all the gods so I knew at least one heard me and nothing.

I ordered a Galaxy Nexus from Clove, and oddly enough I have not experienced the volume bug issue as of yet.
I am however having some issues with weird static / hissin / crackling noises being emitted from the speaker when I make or receive calls.
I can make 5-6 calls in a row without the issue occuring, then suddenly while dialing the same number for the seventh time (voice mail to not drive friends nuts ) the noises will commence immediately.
If I put the call on loud-speaker, the noises disappear instantly, and reappear when I turn off the loud-speaker. As soon as I end the call, the noises stop as well.
Also sometimes immediately after a call, the static / hissing noises will commence for 2-3 seconds, then stop.
Have anyone experienced anything similar? My guess is faulty hardware and that I have to return my phone? :/
I seem to get a quick static "pop" immediately as a call is being connected.
Not an OMG SHOWSTOPPER but kind of annoying. Perhaps it will be fixed in a future update.
I have a pop sound. What network are you on? I bought from Clove too and very much have Ghost SAV. I use Orange no problem but GiffGaff which uses O2 is affected. 900 GSM 2G is the issue and orange does not use it AFAIK.
The Pop occurs when I tap the screen. It is very faint. Then if I do nothing then after 5 seconds it pops again. If I pinch rather than tap then it doesn't do it.
The Pop is from the rear big speaker, not the ear peice

And your in the USA didn't think it would affect us, Where did you buy from ?
This is more than a "soft pop". The static/hissing noises I am experiencing are loud enough to make it impossible to hear what the recipient of the call is saying. Only solution is to hang up and re-dial.
Only happens every once in a while, but definitely a "showstopper" in regards to rendering the phone useless for like 20% of the calls

Have you worked out why this is happening?
I've had this problem with my GN too from Clove.co.uk, using GiffGaff network in the UK. I can pretty much replicate this problem every time I make a call - does the proximity sensor trigger the crackling noise? It does in my case.
I sent my phone back to Clove a few months ago, who sent it back to Samsung. They appeared not to do anything, flash the phone with their own version of firmware (removing my yakju build) and getting back to me 3 weeks later. I wasnt happy. In any case, I've put it back to yakju and the problem is still there. Love the phone, but dont need the hassle of being without a smart phone for a few weeks again. Urgh.
Anyone else had this?
EDIT: This seems to have been fixed in 4.0.4 (IMM76D)
I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I tried searching for the problem but it appears that most of the results that come up regarding in call audio issues were the microphone cutting out.
However, the problem i've been experiencing is for long phone calls with my gf, the audio that i hear on the receiving end seems to go in and out. What i mean is, the call will start out normally and everything sounds crystal clear, but after maybe 20 min, my gf begins to sounds really muffled as if she were talking to her phone from across the room instead of having the phone against her face. After a while the audio becomes loud and clear again.
She claims to hear me fine throughout the call, but it becomes almost impossible to make out what she's saying even on max volume (with and without the headphones too). Im not sure if it's an issue with my phone or hers (an iPhone 4s). I've had this issue on 4.0.2, and 4.0.4. I'm now running AOKP's 4.0.3 ROM and the problem still persists. Any help anyone? this is really annoying, esp for a long distance relationship!
Hi all,
I'm having a problem with my Xperia S that started manifesting itself a few days ago. Basically when I receive a call the sound doesn't come out of the earpiece but instead comes from the back of the phone, as if the loudspeaker was being used, but very quietly.
I don't believe this is a headphone issue as I've never used headphones on my Xperia S.
The earpiece works under normal phone conditions, e.g. Turning volume up on the home screen producer a bleep as normal.
Turning on loudspeaker during a conversation will basically make the sound already coming out the back of the phone go loud as is expected when activating the loudspeaker option.
Has anyone else ever experienced this or know of a fix?
I have already tried the 'plug headphones in and out repeatedly' fix which hasn't worked.
I don't think detecting the headphones being plugged in is the issue.
Any advice welcome!
Does anyone think this could be a software issue? Someone in the Sony Forums has recommended doing a repair on my phone, which just means flashing a firmware file to the phone. I can do that, but it doesn't seem like that would be the issue, would it?
Nexus 5X, Stock 8.1.0 with security patch level 5 April 2018.
If I make or receive a call, the other party cannot hear me, my voice is severely muted and garbled. I've tested this by leaving messages on my home phone and all suffer from exactly this.
Now the microphone itself seems to be fine - WhatsApp voice messages are perfectly clear, I installed a voice recorder app to check and the recordings are good. Google voice searches also work fine.
I've done a factory reset. I've uninstalled updates to the Google Phone app. I've swapped SIMs. I've tried alternative dialers. I've turned on/off 2G /3G /4G. But my voice calls are always rubbish.
Anyone have any ideas as to what might be going on or suggestions as to what else to try?
Thanks!
Hi
I'm just visiting here with the same problem. I've been getting complaints about call quality from my end for a little while and it's driving me mad trying to be heard, often it starts off okay, then degrades rapidly after a few minutes, other times its from the start of the call. I've done the same as you, the mic tests fine in other apps, and sometimes it works okay. I did a complete factory reset which did seem to improve things but the problems returned, and no, I hadn't added any apps in between it working and going back to being terrible.
I've also tested calling my home answer phone and leaving a message to see what people are complaining about, and it is just constant drop outs. This happens over Wi-Fi calling, and over the network (EE network/UK), so it's not a reception problem. I've also used a plug in headphones with microphone and it's the same problem.
I really didn't want to buy another device at this time, but to me it's looking like a hardware problem.

Phil

Before I did the factory reset I had tried turning off noise reduction in the build.prop as recommended to try but it made no difference.
It sounds to listen too as though it's a faulty connection, and I'm thinking now this might be related to the reboot loops caused by connection problems, and this has the same cause, broken connections on the main chip. It's odd the sound is okay when recording sound or video, however that might simply be because the sound is being routed and processed elsewhere, and it's only when it's compressed for a call and routed via the Qualcomm modem that it's affected by a faulty connection. This would explain why sometimes for me it is okay, or starts of on a call okay then as the phone warms up the connection starts breaking.

Hi
I've now upgraded to a Pixel XL 2 as I needed to be able to be heard on calls and the 5X was out of warranty and LG didn't want to know. I really didn't want to upgrade quite so soon. The XL with the same SIM card on the same mobile network is all good and everyone can hear me, plus I have the benefit of VoLTE.
I believe the microphone problem is hardware related, most likely the same cause as the boot loop issues where the CPU or board has some broken solder connections. It sounds like a broken connection, and explains why it has progressively become worse. It's a pain as usually when I upgrade my phone gets handed over to another family member, but I can't do that with the broken 5X.

Alright guys, I've got a problem I haven't quite dealt with before:
I've got no sound coming from my "external" phone speakers. The in-ear speaker works fine, and so does the mic. That means I can take phone calls just fine. Listening to Whatsapp voice messages is a challenge because Whatsapp uses the speakers which means the message plays with no sound, that is until I hold the phone to my face and the prox switch tells the app to play through the ear speaker. No YouTube videos or Snapchat sounds.
I looked around the forums and such but didn't find anything. I've checked all the system settings I know to check, but nothing I can find is "muting" the sound. My apps list is fairly standard. Stock rom and kernel, unlocked since day 1 but without even a recovery installed. Basically a factory phone.
What are you guys thinking? I'm happy to try basically anything. Even thinking of slapping a ROM into this beast to see what happens, although I doubt there's too much development going on for a 2yo phone...
Cheers!
Update:
I've got intermittent sound. I haven't opened the phone and have no reason to think water ingress could be the problem, but I can't think of a reason that the speakers would work intermittently. Sounds more like a hardware problem than a software problem to me. Anyone else?
It also happened to me except I didn't have any sound coming from both speaker and the earpiece. Not sure what happened though.

Well it only has one speaker. As for the others most likely hardware related.

Weirdly, I'm stuck in unreliable-sound limbo. I get sound most of the time, but speaker sound disappears occasionally with no predictability that I've found. Interestingly, If I mash or smack the bottom of the phone phone screen by the speakers, sometimes sound will come back on briefly or entirely. Weird, huh? Not sure what could be causing a connection problem. Maybe I'll open up the phone eventually and find out.
