Just got a Robin - and the issue is - every time a new Gmail arrives the screen wakes up/turns on
Is there a setting to turn that off?
Thats weird, Google killed ambient display in Android N.
So Robin doesn't wake up for any notification as such.
Any third party app you installed to manage notifications?

Just got my new Z2 Play and it works great besides one setting I can't seem to find. I love moto display and have it enabled, but whether I have it on or off in the moto app every time I get a notification my phone wakes to the lock screen. This is not the nice black screen for moto display but just the plain old lock screen itself. I've looked in settings under display and notifications and not found anything about active/ambient/whatever display. Is this just how the phone works?
I don't have these problem.
Moto Display works perfectly here.

Any idea where I might look to fix this? It's not the most annoying feature in the world but I just can't find an option to change it. Do you have any sort of active/ambient display option under your normal phone settings?

No. Only in Moto app.
Try reset the phone.
So I finally fixed this I think. I'm not 100% sure what the problem was for everything. First thing I did was reset all my app permissions. This also reset all my disabled apps. Then I went into the moto app and turned off and on all the settings relating to moto display including the wave to wake option.
After doing these two things started behaving properly, like emails and random notifications from other apps, but it turns out both Textra and Snapchat have options for waking the screen. I also had to disable those to get those apps to work as well. I don't think this was a Z2 play issue but rather just an issue with a sloppy first time setup of a new phone from me... :cyclops:

I'm trying to to the same thing. I've disabled moto display app and ''ambient display'' option under ''screen'' settings showed up... I've enabled it but the screen does not light up when a new notification arrives. Did you have any luck?
I update my phone to android p three days ago. After that i found my heads up notification was disabled, the notifications just show in top bar but no peeking.
Second,i just use google play to download some apps, but it just show downloading.Strangely, after a long time the download task finished suddenly.
How to deal these two issues?

1 - Do you have Do Not Disturb enabled? By default it hides notifications on the lockscreen and the popping up at the top. You can turn that off within the DND settings.
2 - Haven't experienced that. Maybe try clearing app data for the Play Store?

Hey all, my ring doorbell app wakes the screen anytime I get an alert. I want to keep the notifications on but don't want the screen to wake. It wakes even in my pocket which I want to of course avoid. It may just be a bug in the app but I should be able to limit that from happening. Or so I hope anyway.
I have tried the following.
1. Switched all notifications pertaining to the app and individual cameras to "sound only"
2. In the app I have disabled "alerts open full screen video"
3. I have disabled heads up notifications globally through ADB.
4. Disabled ambient display.
5. Disabled notifications on lock screen.
I'm at a loss on what to do next. Any ideas are appreciated at this point.
TIA

I've struggled with the same thing for months. It never used to do it, but after an update earlier this year it became the new normal for me.
I'm glad I'm not the only one. Hopefully somebody chimes in with some sort of work around.
I'm having the same problem with a Sony XZ1 phone (Android 8.0.0). I spoke with Ring at length and it's 'apparently' a problem with my phone, not their App.
I think that's a load of rubbish and something they need to address and fix. I installed the App on another Android phone running an earlier version of software, the App installs with different options and doesn't wake up the screen. So it's obviously dependent on the OS version but as other Apps don't have the same problem I can only conclude that it's an issue with the Ring App.
Has anyone tried uninstalling the app and then install an older version from APK mirror? Not even sure its on there but it's worth a go

That's a great idea. There are plenty of versions to try on APK mirror, one or two per month from 2018. Not a good sign for a reliable and stable app.
I'll give it a go later unless anyone gets there first and can suggest a 'good' version to try
Were you able to find an older version that doesn't have the screen wake behavior?
edit: Pixel 2 - going back to 2.0.66.8 still has the screen wake behavior regardless of notification setting.
edit 2: 2.0.57.2 does the same thing...
Looks like the latest ring version finally let's you fix this. Select your devices, go to notification settings, then select sound only. The default is sound plus pop up. I no longer have the issue after making the change.
Can anyone confirm if turning off the 'plus pop' in the ring app settings works? I have a new pixel 3 on Android pie and the app is still turning on the screen at every alert event with settings set to just sound or just silent.
I'm having the same issue with the ring app. It wakes the screen. Really sucks when phone is in my pocket. I have tried every option and or combo of options. I have a pixel 3a on Android 10. Android 10 does have a option to wake screen for notifications found under display advanced, lock screen. But it is turned off
Still a problem on Android 10, No combinations of settings has been able to stop this for me. Of course Ring denies this even though I have sent a logcat to them.
Hi Guys,
I still have some late notifications once in a while from different programs.
Line (Messaging)
Google Calendar
HQ (Trivia game)
And a few others...
I have made sure to disable the "Auto" power manager setting for those apps and most of the time they do work normally. However once a week or so I miss a calendar notification or other notifications. I'm guessing this has to do with the aggressive background task killing on Chinese phones, or maybe the AI stuff? Either way, I want my notifications to work and come in on time.
Are there any hidden settings I am missing to disable background task killing? (I had an older Huawei phone that allowed you to disable Huawei memory management in developer settings, but that's not on this phone)
Thanks!
I'm having the same issue on a mate 20 pro, but up to now I could not find a resolution. It's annoying as our doorbell works with a push message that does not always gets delivered instant now.
Try locking the app along with turning off smart notification and turning on the setting to keep mobile active when in sleep mode. Seemed to work for my AL00 which has aggressive power handling.
on top of changing auto mod for app launch there's also battery optimization which isn't in battery menu but in application - special access menu. Try to disallow apps you need maybe it helps.

It's in Developer Options on my L29.
So I was annoyed not having an LED notification light on oneplus 6t so I tried to make one of my own.
As OP6T has amoled display whenever a desired notification comes the app brings in a black screen with notification LED looking animation.
Though this is tested on OP6T, it should be working for most Android Oreo and later phones.
If not working for your phone, I'll suggest you to send me logs at [email protected]
To use it:
Install App.
Disable any battery optimisation for the app.
Give notification access permission.
Give full screen permission(if any required for your phone)
Select apps you want notifications for, by choosing a color (Only apps you set a color to enables LEDs).
Note: On successfully selecting a color for an app the text in which the App name is written should change to that color
Thats it.
For MIUI 11 devices make sure that AutoStart is enabled in App Info. Also check "Show on lock screen" permission in other settings.
Settings image: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=1yxrLd5u7kLSGBwviKhXYqM21YLC8Dhiv
Note: To turn off the LED and to unlock phone double tap anywhere on the screen or use power button.
App now available on Play Store, please rate and share if you liked the app.

If it is not running after various troubleshoot measures, maybe send the logs.

Working great, good job!
What about System Apps (Phone, message etc.) ? I'm not able to find them in your app.
Gmail is missing as well and it is not a system app.
Thanks in advance!

Same here. Also, an off switch for each app would be more convenient instead of picking white colour.
This is just what I needed, works great on my phone. Thank you!
I would consider using this if and when you include system apps. They are the only ones I'm interested in getting notifications from. Thanks for your efforts
Fantastic
Brilliant
Go work for 1+
Show them how to do the job properly
Great start!! works like a charm, agree on the systems apps thing though..
Wow, Great App.:good:
Works Perfect.

@HarshBoy99 Hello! Thank you for the job you''re doing, but if you don't mind, i would like to point some important things.
You'r app uses a black overlay with a colorized dot in the corner, it's cool but there is a but. If The device is in a pocket, and you're using a pocket detection, the screen will turn on and show the pocket detection screen - what kinda annoying issue.
Another moment, again - becauses there is a use of black overlay, when there is already a notification panding and you recieve anothere on, there is a head-up notification with the all status bar info that shows up, again - kinda annoying.
As a recommandation - trigger the built-in AOD app instead of using a black overlay, that will fix the issues i've mentioned above + there will be an option to use fingerprint scanner on notifications.
Wish you the best!

Well I have included pocket detection in app, i.e if the LED is on and the sensor is covered the activity will be stopped. But if you have pocket mode on, it will show you the pocket mode screen for a brief moment and then switch off the display. This will help save battery if phone is in your pocket.
Yeah on that heads-up notification, I haven't found a way to get rid of this but it is only an issue of few seconds.
There are already many apps that bring on the default AOD display but it doesn't feel like an actual LED and moreover we can't change the appearance of AOD as it is a system app.
Thank You!
I wish there is an more option for WhatsApp. I do not want to receive LED from the Watsp group
Thanks

I have been using the app for some days now. I have also locked the app in recents to avoid it being killed or stop functioning. But when I get a notification, double tapping doesn't work instantly. Have to tap 4 times at least. Also, on unlocking the phone, I am in the Notify Buddy app instead.
App is great if you don't mind me offering suggestions I have a couple.
The light to move around in intervals across the top of the screen or even the two corners just to prevent possible burn in, say if you get a notification in the middle of the night or something and it blinks for hours on end (I know the chances are slim, but better to be safe than sorry)
Possibly an option to cycle the notification light if you have multiple notifications, so if I have a sms text and a messenger text it would blink once for the sms and once for messenger and cycle between them so I know I have 2 notifications.
An interval setting maybe how fast or slow for it to pulse or to keep it static. (If you choose to make it static warn it could possibly cause burn in)
If it's possible a way to keep the overlay active unless the notification is gone, I tested the app sending myself an sms text just to make sure everything was working I left the notification and the overlay didn't go back to the LED the screen just stayed black. If I'm not mistaken an actual notification light would stay active until the notification for said app was cleared.
That's all I really have for suggestions, I appreciate what you're doing with this app it's honestly the best alternative to any of the apps attempting to replicate a notification LED. I don't want you to think I don't like the app I'm just thinking of how my old phones with notification LED's behaved with notifications. Again thank you for your work and I hope my suggestions were something that could be of use.
Other then waking the phone this app is bloody great ?

Well this was exactly how I wanted for my app to function, but while testing it myself I observed that I had pending notification almost always and it would drain the battery exponentially. Therefore I went with notifying the user only while he is away from phone.
