Anyone switching to the LG V30? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

I'm just curious if anyone is thinking of moving to the LG V30 and if so what are your thoughts as to why? I'm good with my S8+ on Tmobile right now, but wouldn't mind a new device by the end of the year. Don't really care about the goggles that they're touting to give away, there's just not enough usable content out there to make them compelling. I used mine for about a week and now they just collect dust.
Just wondering what everyone else is thinking.

Depends if you want root. LG has been removing fastboot commands from US phones for awhile. I have a V10 as a backup but can honestly say I have no interest in going back to LG devices.

I'm just curious, I liked the LG devices. What makes you say you won't go back to them?
I didn't know about them removing fastboot. Does that mean we can't root the V30?

I can't say for sure if root will be achieved. The only reason root was achieved on the v20 was the dirtycow exploit. LG had heat issues and screen burn in issues on the three devices of theirs I've had in the last few years. Not to mention the whole bootloop issue on many devices.

I will not, My G4, My v10, Mom's, friends v10's bootlooped. I can't trust my memories to a device that has James Bond (Sorry meant Mission Impossible) motherboard.

No more LG devices after the way they handled the bootloop issue.

Sorry for the dumb question, what does "James Bond motherboard" mean? I've NEVER had an issue with an LG device so maybe I'm one of the lucky few. I like the form factor and I like the devices themselves. Just I'm waffling between switching as I bought a bunch of stuff for the s8+ so what do I do with all the stuff?

Oh, no worries. Were a lot of the devices having this issue? I had no issues at all with my V10 or V20.

yes, and there was a lawsuit brought against LG.

geezalou, that sounds awful. I had absolutely no issues with my V10 or V20. I really liked the devices. I even rooted and put a good custom ROM on them.

The crazy nuts thing about the bootlooped issue from what I've experienced was; The G4, v10,G5,v20 line would bootlooped if u we're NOT rooted, NOT ever rooted, or currently rooted. My mom is to old to know what root is so she had a bone stock AT&T v10, My wife's was rooted on T-Mobile, and my father in law G4 was Verizon unrooted. so it's all carriers

I never had an issue. That's weird. Now, I'm starting to doubt the V30 thing. Well, the S8+ is a good phone so far.

I've only had my S8+ for a couple of months, so probably not. My last phone went tits up on me in August (my fault) and I needed a new phone, so decided to get the S8+, since it was one of the best Android phones available at the time. But if the V30 had been available at the time I might have opted for it instead of the S8+.
Tbh the fingerprint sensor placement still bugs the **** out of me. Others say that you get used to it, but two months later it still takes me 2-3 tries to get it to read correctly most times, even with a case. I use it dozens of times throughout the day, so it's not a little problem for me.
Don't get me wrong, other than that it's a great phone, and Samsung Pay is much better than Android Pay, imo. Also one of the first phones in years that I didn't feel the need to root immediately, which was honestly a bit of a surprise.

It' s a damn good phone but the pOLED is a disaster. It's on the level of AMOLED 4 years ago with uneven illumination, blotches and stripes.

The sad thing is this subpar screen will be probably in the Pixel 2 XL.

I had it and ugh sent it back oled and selfie cam were a bust for me.

Now, I'm sort of sorry I asked. I was going to switch, but figure I can wait. While the S8+ doesn't have root or bootloader unlocked, the hell I know is better than the (you know the rest).
Anyone else seeing the "me-too" thing of LG offering the VR glasses. I have the ones that came with the S8+ but after the initial wow factor, it got old real fast and a lack of content made them useless. Even sideloaded, there wasn't a lot of good content. Most of it was overpriced and just bad.

I want to buy a T-Mobile G4. Some questions.

I am planning on going to the T-Mobile store later today to pick up a new G4, but first I wanted to ask some questions.
First, how long do you think I'll be waiting until I can root/flash ROMs/etc? I can live without these things for a while, but not forever!
Second, are the touchscreen and other issues something that I should seriously consider before getting this phone, or are they not that big of a deal? Are you guys all happy with the battery life?
So far I have not found any issues. It's been great on my end. Root will come.. It always does

I bought the T-Mobile version from eBay and received it on Saturday. So far no issues. The only gripe I have is slow charging while using the phone, but I just ordered some quick chargers so I should be good.

Thus far I am pretty happy with mine. I have noticed that it sometimes interprets a quick swipe as a press (thus opening an app I did not intend) and that, at least on mine, the digitizer may not go all the way to the edge of the screen. The leftmost 1/8" or so of the screen does not appear to register touch input. The right side isn't great either, but does seem better. I have not heard anyone else mention it though, so hopefully it is just my unit.
The only other gripe I have about it for now is that the viewing angle on the screen is pretty narrow. If you aren't looking at the display straight on it tends to get washed out.

You should never get a phone with the hope of it getting root. It's a bad idea. Root is getting harder and harder to achieve especially with dmverity implemented (Variants of the Note 4 after 9 months still do not have root and most likely never will without a bootloader exploit.) Bootloader exploits are almost non existent. Unfortunately the Tmobile version of this phone has a locked bootloader. You have to also think how long you will have the phone. Are you willing to wait half or more of it's usable life for root?
Get a phone with an unlocked bootloader, then you will never have to worry about it. Get the G4 815 for example or a nexus. I'm running 5.1.1 on my note 3 which would be impossible with a locked bootloader. Unlocked bootloaders will give you a much longer lifespan.
Happy with mine as well, although I'm using MetroPCS SIM on my phone.
My advice really, hold on to your Nexus 5. I think its gonna be a while before you see any ROMS or unlock the boot loader. I can't go back go my Nexus 5 cause this phone is awesome. It was an impulse purchase.
If ROMS and having the phone fully unlocked for development, please don't buy it. Also the more I use this phone, the more I believe that CM12.1 even when it does hit the LG G4, it will be not running at its full potential. Some little things that Stock has, better camera app, the tap lock and unlock screen, lock screen quick view, I mean little things that the CM12.1 Rom will be missing unless it has access to all the drivers of the phone.
I've never forgiven LG for what they Did to the G2X. This phone is awesome and will have best experience with the Stock ROM. Its Not AOSP, I wish it was but it won't.
Just wait. The main reason I got it was because removable battery and SD card. Can't wait for ZeroLemon to release the batter for LG G4.

Does the international version have all the same bands? I really want to have band 12. WiFi calling is also important to me.
I wanted to buy it through T-Mobile also so I could get it on EIP, but I could just finance it through my parents too.
Where can I buy the international version?
What do you think the probability is that the T-Mobile version will get rooted?
Thanks

I think root will come out by end of summer. If your wanting root soon then don't get the G4. Personally I just suck it up and deal with it.
I've even had horrible dirty bad thoughts of selling my G4 and waking up with a ZenPhone 2 in my hands. Should I pull the trigger? http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VWKKEYO/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_7YoIvbGEVV1H6

The stock ROM isn't awful. I came from SlimKat (based on CM) and there are definitely some features that I miss (Long press back to kill & double pressing back to switch the the most recent app mostly). But after installing Nova and reducing the DPI (via ADB) it is very workable. I am still holding out hope for root, but with how great the camera is I am not sure I would flash back to an AOSP ROM.

Touch issues are fixed by the keyboard update. Just be sure to do all the updates available and you should be right as rain there.
Battery life, I get 28+ hours while streaming Spotify through BT speaker for 12 hours, an hour voice calls, as well as a bunch of other goofing around on the device. It's not Note 4 life, but it's far better than any most other phones I've had.
Root/unlock will come, but it could be a while. Honestly, I like the phone well enough stock to not really be all that worried about it. While I'm sure that some devs could make this a bit snappier by debloating it, the stock UI really is pretty snappy and nice.
Camera is also fantastic. Fast action shots come out clear....close up shots have TONS of detail.

True, but I can't stay locked down without root forever while they wait for the bounty to get to $15k. I give it another few weeks for root, or I'm thinking of jumping ship to the ZenFone 2.

I had to pay a whopping $317 just to get my hands on a G4 through tmo's financing department. At least my monthly payments on it are very low.
But it will cost me $322 shipped for that ZenFone 2! I just want to play with it! lol
The phone is great, few things though, the root and subsequently the ROMs will be limited especially when compared to a nexus or even an S6, I have owned every nexus since the Galaxy nexus and I also owned the LG g3, which was a great phone, but development even to this day just never compared and that's mainly because of the carrier specific versions. So if you really like to try all kinds of different ROMs I suggest getting the Nexus 6 although I would say this phone is much better in my opinion but I miss and will continue to miss the variety of ROMs and customizations from my Nexus 6 as well as the screen and front facing speakers. Biggest benefit over the nexus 6 is the camera as well as the size/design/weight. As far as the battery I highly highly suggest using nova launcher instead of the stock LG and disable the LG apps if you can makes the battery life way way better, also get the free battery and SD card that will help to Haha.

I think it's more about the app.

Well said sir,
I screwed up and bought a Note 4 because of the deal I was getting ($400 outright), I immediately put away my flashaholics LG G2, and head to XDA only to see the At&t Note 4 has no ROMS, Kernels, or TWRP. Could not be more disappointed, a phone that should be a beast is hampered by no root. I would never touch the G4 or any other phone without full permanent root available in first 90 days of retail release. You are better off waiting to see what the new 2015 Moto X, Nexus ??, and OnePlus 2 will offer.

[Q] Expectations of US G4 root/unlocked bootloader?

I'm about to upgrade my Verizon account, and I'm trying to decide between the LG G4 and HTC One M9. Right now, rooting and bootloader unlocking are possible on the M9. Difficult; but possible. However, the G4 still lacks carrier-specific forums on XDA. I know that the G4 was only released on Verizon at the beginning of this month, but I would have expected to see more movement on its development by now.
Is it reasonable to think that the G4 will ever have root or bootloader unlock on Verizon? The G3 has an all-in-one toolkit, but that took a whole year. Then again there are rumors on here that LG might open up bootloader unlocks for all variants.
I want to want this phone so bad, but it's dead in the water if I'll be stuck on stock firmware without root for 2 years. Is it still just too early to expect anything and the hacks will likely flow soon? Or are things really moving slow? I'm not asking for an ETA. I'm just wondering if there's reasonable hope for anything to happen.
I'm in the same boat as you, but on at&t. I am planning on buying the G4 tomorrow. I think root will be here before too long; jcase has rooted the at&t variant but hasn't released the method, presumably because it is unsafe. I figure the worst case scenario is I get the G4 and wait it out, if no root by fall, sell the phone and buy the new Nexus 5 or whatever they'll call it.

I'd forgotten about jcase's news. I guess mostly I was just worried by the lack of carrier-specific forums. I've never seen it take this long for a flagship phone before.
I have 2 more weeks to make my choice. I may go your route.
We will get Root and Bootloader access, it is just a matter of time since the devs (or rather some of them) already have it and are working on making a safer method to do it.
As far as a direct unlock from LG, that is never going to happen. They have personally stated they have no plans to do the unlocker for any of the "older models" of the G4 (So no AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile, US Cellular, etc.).
While I do understand your concerns as Root is very important to most of us and it seems like an eternity waiting for it, but trust me, this device can certainly hold its own just based on its own merits.......Yes Root will be nice and bring forth welcome modifications and removal of bloatware, but in the mean time the phone is still an incredible piece of technology and is also a great feel in the hand.
Overall I would say get yourself the G4, you will not be sorry.

I'm a pretty heavy root app (and custom recovery) user. I like making regular nandroid backups. I use Titanium Backup all the time for so many different functions. I love my root-enabled Tasker profiles and apps like VideoReg Pro with save-to-SD capability. Plus, a bootloader unlocked phone just means so many more ROMs and a much simpler process to try them out.
I agree it's an amazing phone (hardware), but the software side of things is even more important to me. Thus my dilemma.

I fully understand, trust me I am the same way. I got my G4's on 6/17 and this is the longest I have ever owned a smartphone without Bootloader & Root Access.......It really sucked for me at first (as I did not know it was still locked down when I got it and had I known that before hand I honestly would have gone for the Moto N6 instead) after a week or so with the G4 though I am super happy with my decision and now I just see Root as being the eventual icing on an already fantastic cake.

Ahh, I see. I was not sure on those as I do not have one at my disposal so I had no reason to ask about it. Thank you for the information on the matter though.....I guess the H815 is just special?? Seems like it is the ONLY one LG is willing to "Fully Support".

Well Mine is H815. But it's the TW version... The H815 Europe version without any carrier ties is the only one that can unlock. I wish I had known this all when i ordered it .

You and me both, buddy. I ended up with the US991 because I was dumb and did not check the root status before I bought the G4 (Don't get me wrong I love the phone and everything, just should have done my research is all)
We technically already have root. It's just a matter of being safely packaged and released. I give it another month or 2 before we see a long hand method on how to root our phones without bricking them.
In all honesty the G4 is far superior to the m9 in just about every way, aside from the forward facing speaker of the m9.

That’s debatable. I prefer the smaller screen and resolution myself. I'd rather not sacrifice CPU/GPU cycles and battery life for pixels I can't even see. I mean, the G4 has 4x the pixels of my 24" monitor. That's just stupid
Then there's the snapdragon 810 in the M9 that some say is horrible, and others say is amazing. And yes, the stereo speakers would be nice.
If the M9 had a removable battery and the G4's camera, I wouldn't even be here. The camera is really important to me though, and the M9's looks like a toy compared to the G4's.

Oh the G4 is deff display overkill. And I'd be with the m9 personally if the camera was on par with the G4 and s6, even without a removable battery.
I went with the G4 for the camera and sd card. I have kids and taking a million pics of them are more important than hearing my ring tone and music louder without a Bluetooth speaker.
I prefer a largerish phone after my s5 and the G4 didn't really feel much larger aside from width a little.
Plus I got a free battery and 32gb SD card, so there's that too.

Yeah, we have pretty much the same requirements. Those kids move so fast, an average phone camera just won't cut it anymore. I'm tired of blurry pictures
I've used every Samsung Galaxy flagship until now. Forget Samsung and their Apple-chasing, anti-user policies. I need an SD card dangit!
Some phones take longer to get root than others, but being how this is LG's flagship, and LG has a growing followship, there will be root very soon. Just be patient! This phone kicks butt. I typically root to get easy tethering, ad removal, and bloatware removal, but this phone is damn good out of the box WITHOUT root! get it and don't look back! you won't regret it.

Trade in or not to Trade in?

I recently picked up the G4 for $99 to avoid being charged an extra $20/month for my unlimited data.
I'm coming from the G3, which I loved. My question is, does anyone think development of any ROMs will happen?
I remembereh when I got the G3, the same thing was happening, no development, then over night it exploded. My G4 came with 11a, which is nice except the miserable touch experience. Any thoughts, should I sell it and get something different, or ride out the storm and hope for the best? Sorry for all the rambling.

I came from the G2 so I honestly don't know how to answer your question. Things are pretty grim here on the verizon side.
Thanks for the responce, I'll ride it out for a week or two, then just sell my g4 if a new update or development doesn't aspire.

If you're looking for development, this isn't the droid you're looking for.
Sell it and get a Nexus device. I almost threw mine to the wall many times because of the touch screen.

What everyone else said, this device is doomed right now in terms of development for anyone who is above 10b.

So I have ad guy interested in trading his Nexus 6 for many G4, should I pull the trigger?

Absolutely not! The Nexus 6 can be purchased new for $289. The G4 still retails for $499 I believe, if it's still new you could easily sell it for $350-$400.

That's what thought, thanks. The 6 is to big for me anyways, I have a feeling development will eventually happen. Right now I'm happy with root and hotspot working, just wish there was a fix for the touchscreen issues. They are getting old quick.

Don't forget Xposed, I have a guide on that here as well.
Personally I don't think any development will come. I had the G2, G3, and G4, and with each new model there was less and less dev support. From what I heard you need to be on 10b for the possible bootloader exploit, but most of us are past that version now.

I just sold mine a week ago used for $360. New ones are selling for anywhere between $310-$350. Still more than a Nexus 6 new for $289.
If you wanted to flip a phone, the G4 is one of the worst honestly. You should have gotten an iPhone or Note5.
Question. I think I can live with root and freezing the LG UI bloat stuff. The main question is are the new models fixed for the touchscreen issue? I'm seeing new ones for sale on swappa. They have manufacture dates of 08/2015. Are August production phones free of the touchscreen issue?
I just received a May 2015 g4 from best buy. Still on 10b. They keep trying to force an update. I will try to keep stalling. Was it 11 update that introduced the touchscreen issues? I don't want to root yet because I want Android pay.

If you root, then install xposed...you can install root cloak for Android Pay. It works perfectly for me. Just don't try and open Android Pay between the time that you root it and install Root Cloak (and add it to the cloaking list).

Thinking of moving to G4, would like your thoughts.

Hey all,
Currently a BB Passport owner and yes I do love my phone, However, the maps are not getting updated, its starting to get laggy, and BB making a push into android before deciding to just stay with IOT security. well I hope the priv does well but the slider would get chewed up in my line of work.
Thus here I am asking the following.
The G4 runs 808 which from what I've read overtime supersedes the 810 in performance due to heat and throttling. I was originally sold on the Sony Z5 because I work marine construction and figured with a good case the water resistance would proof nice and I wouldnt have to get a rugged phone whereby I lose a lot of performance.
Z5 has 810 and im personally leery of that chip since I read so many reports on it.
My attention then turned to the G4
from what i've read the phone has a nice camera, strong antenna and a nice leather back. Cool but, for me I need to know how it handles the weather. I plan on putting it in a defender case while at work, but it rains here on vancouver island A LOT. like inches a day sometimes and I may need to bust out my phone to calc board footage or weight of a lumber package or take a call or something.
Is the phone loud?
Is the phone going to be ok in a otterbox in those conditions? (I get OB is good for dropping, how about rain, the oops a puddle drop etc)
if these all look good, I may bite the bullet and grab one. Im really not excited to lose my keyboard on my passport but, some of the glitches im getting are over the top irritating.
Thanks all,
Jordan.
For the keyboard just install SwiftKey which beat any keyboard and you can set, personalized it to be more productive.
Put a thin case and it will be great.
It charges fast, the phone is loud.
Here is the thing. IF you do not care not having an unlocked bootloader for the G4, by all means, get the G4 since it is a fantastic device for average users. But if ever you'd gotten yourself an H815 EUR variant of the G4, absolutely get it!

So I am thinking of buying a H815.
Do you have any trouble with it?
If you are using Android 6, is doze working?
camera
And does the it support the new Camera HAL v3?
Would be nice, to be able to take raw pictures
You can take Raw pictures on any G4 camera version, I thought. That isn't something new.
There aren't many custom roms because of the locked bootloaders. Fortunately the LG series really stopped me from being a flashaholic. Going back to stock AOSP leaves a lot to be desired.
We do have root and can flash custom stuff such as Xposed and Tweaks using apps such as Flashify. There just isn't a Custom Recovery for the locked models.

At least for the H815, it is possible to unlock the bootloader... but sounds very much like Samsung KNOX
http://developer.lge.com/resource/mobile/RetrieveBootloader.dev?categoryTypeCode=ANRS
Will be flashing CyanogenMod as soon as possible, if I am going to buy it.
I got one
I joined the family today. I'll wait for someone to open that bootloader. One I got the phone in my hands I was sold.
Buy it anyway. Stock is better than any AOSP or Cyanogenmod any day of the century, and you will probably get used to LG stock anyway.
No idea why anyone would want to ruin a device by installing buggy software such as AOSP or CM and also destroy camera experience.
Can't see any reason for me to root or install rom's on this phone, it's perfect with MM.
On a side note, it's very easy to fix yourself too with a quick youtube guide.

I really don't think you have much to worry about then. Personally, I'd take a dozen of them and give them out to everyone I know since no one I know even knows what a bootloader is, no less root.
I have a VZW Pixel locked bootloader and I have no regrets. I recently had to return the one I got for $240 over 2 years for a warranty replacement. They sent me another Verizon model but I could unlock it this time. Must have slipped thru the cracks. I did flip the switch but I won't unlock it until I no longer have it on a network at which point I'd play around with stuff and not worry about performance or soft bricks. I've found no real reason to unlock it while using it as my DD.
But as you say, that's just you and this is just me. Neither of us is right or wrong, it's just how we do things these days. I will not pay $650 just to have a device that I can bl unlock when I won't unlock it anyway. Under $300 and $360 for the 2 XL is a tremendous deal. Other than on XDA I doubt there are many who even care about bl at those prices. You won't get that from Google and maybe not even from Verizon this year. We'll see.

Not yet but hopefully soon.
My bet is there will never be a bootloader exploit for the VZW bootloader's. This time I went direct with Google.
I ordered a Pixel 2 XL from Verizon last night about 9:00pm and already have it in my hands and activated. I'm not one of those that has to have an unlockable bootloader either. I purchased from Verizon because it was 50% off by trading in my Verizon Moto Z Force. Lately I've switched camps from must have unlockable bootloader to don't want unlocked bootloader. I prefer to remain stock and take OTA's without issues. My past experiences have taught me that the stock software untampered with performs better and more reliably than any 3rd party ROM ever will. My only reason for unlocking to begin with was ad blocking and removing unwanted apps. You can block ads with "VPN Hosts" app on an unrooted phone and I don't feel the need to remove software any more. I just don't open what I don't use. I haven't tried to unlock the bootloader on this new phone but I suspect you cannot.

Very hit or miss. The quality control is poor. If had each except the five. Two of my kids still using my old ones and they are holding up well but it's a total lottery. That's been my experience with every model they have released.

I'm strongly considering ordering one from VZW because of the current promotion. I had resided to keeping my Pixel XL, but now that I know I can take an old spare phone and get 50% of a new pixel 2 XL, I'm very tempted. I have a Pixel XL with an unlocked bootloader, but it's been unrooted for at least the last 8 months and I haven't otherwise taken advantage of the unlocked bootloader so I don't think I'd miss it. I love the stock ROM, the seamless update process, and decreased vulnerability.

There is one thing about the Pixel 2 XL you need to be aware of. The screen colors are pale and not very vivid. As a result the display does not look as good as other phones. Do some research on that before you buy to make sure you can live with it. I'm ok with it but I'm sure others may not be.
