That you can now swipe away notifications from the lock screen without the screen lighting up all the way? I just noticed this haha. Now it's more like the Moto display. SWEET!

No because on the nexus 6 and even the Pixel, when you touch the notification on the lock screen the entire screen would light up full color. NOW the notification stays black and white while you swipe away.

I guess you're right, I never paid attention to whether it was in color or not, just glad that I could swipe away without unlocking.

Yeah it was a big thing for ex-moto users. We got used to it and swiping away notifcations in the dark wouldn't light up the entire screen causing the room to light up. PLUS the reasoning for staying black and white was that its' supposed to save battery by not having to fully enable the screen.

with the ambient display or whatever it is you can swipe away whatever notification without waking up your phone to show the entire lockscreen.

That wasn't the original behavior. I'm wondering exactly when it changed. The original ambient display behavior was that if you touched the notification on the lockscreen, the ENTIRE display would turn on including your wallpaper. It doesn't do that NOW but I'm just curious if anyone knows when the change was implemented.

Yes. I'm on O. you can only do it when the initial notification comes in. Once the initial notification disappears it goes to the small icons with no info. THAT part I do no like
it's always worked that way as long as you did nothing other than swipe the notification, at least it always did for me. it was only if it actually registered as a tap that the screen would light up or if you stopped mid swipe.
What I think is cool is that you can now swipe a calendar notification and pick a snooze option!

Not sure if this is possible but I would pay to see an app/mod that allows only the status bar to be displayed when the screen is off. I had Pandora hang on me this morning with a black screen and just the status bar visible and it showed all the info I need to know at a quick glance. Hope this is the right section, debated on weather this should be in the General section but mods move if you wish.
So you wanna shut off 95% of the screen only? Highly unlikely.

With the Super AMOLED Plus display, black color = pixel off (screen off for that part) so If there is way to wake the screen and show a black screen with just a notification, what the OP wants IS possible... I think some apps have the ability to wake the screen, i think the issue is the lock screen would show, no?

There is something for the Nexus S becasue it doesn't have the LED light. I think it's called "no led" or something similar on the Market. It will display notifications on the screen while the phone is sleeping.

I had that app for my NS4G and thats not what I want nor did it work very well.
But NoLED is where I got the idea from. If they can display that info why can't someone write an app that displays just the notification bar?
Thank you japper88 for clarifying the screen tech to the 2nd poster.
A black background for all but the notification would be fine but a) the lockscreens gonna show unless you find a way to disable it completely which would then go straight to your homescreen and b) i wouldnt think you could keep 95% of the screen off which is what your asking to do isnt it? If so i dont care what screen you have i highly doubt thats possible.
Maybe modding the lockscreen with a black wallpaper and removing the clock would work.
Sent from a Galaxy far far away...
Again, when the screen displays black #000000 the pixels are off. That is the beauty of the SAMOLED+ screen. It is also like that with the SAMOLED used in the NS4G. It is possible to do what I'm asking. Just need some direction from another section on this board witch is what I'm doing. I will post here when I get it working.

I can't believe Google was so stupid as to design ON-SCREEN buttons and not foresee screen burn-in issues.
Does anyone have any ideas on how we can fix Google's mistake?
If only there was a way to keep the Navigation Menu always hidden and then only make it appear when we need to use it...sort of like how you can hide the Windows Start bar and when you move your mouse, it animates into view on top of everything else.
Maybe, we can use the proximity sensor to show or hide the Navigation Menu? Like, when you swipe your hand over the sensor, it shows or hides it. Or, maybe make it shake activated? Like just shake your phone and the Navigation Menu appears/disappears. If it's shake activated, then we should make it so we can adjust the shake sensitivity because not everyone shakes the same.
Does anyone have any other ideas on how to solve this? Please post them!
I hope Google tracks this thread and patents and uses our ideas. Or else, give us tactile or capacitive buttons in the next Nexus!

I'm sure there is a ROM or two that does this. I know one for the N7 has that feature... I think it was Glazed. Maybe their GNex ROM has it also.
I haven't had any screen burn-in issues in 8 months of owning the phone so unfortunately I can't help there. good luck.

Like 98% of the issues around here I've never had this problem. Sometimes I think I'm the only person with a problem free Nexus. Nevertheless, jaseglenn4 has a thread discussing this. You'll find some info there, good luck:

I have screen retention with my keyboard and that's about it.
Sometimes it's fairly noticeable, sometimes it's not, not bothering me enough to get it replaced.
I just changed my habits so that I rotate the screen 90° to the right whenever I use landscape (web browsing and lots of other things) so as to switch the menu to the opposite side. I figure with that usage pattern it'll take twice as long to notice any burn in.
With low brightness settings in most cases I figure this'll be longer than I expect to keep the phone anyway.

I heard a myth that if you had screen burn in issue you can reduce it by setting a fullscreen white image, crank it up to max brightness and leave it there for 1-2 hours.. it's not gone but it'll be reduced..
Can someone confirm this?

Yes some roms have the expandable desktop option to make it full screen. I see some people use that and LMT so they don't have to use nav bar instead just gestures to move around phone
Don't ever buy a phone with an amoled display again. *solved*
good day.
It's not going to burn in. Your screen would have to be on for days and days consecutively, nonstop, with the keys never hiding or changing position. And even then with the stock color of the keys it's even less likely.

I think the reason Google made the virtual keys grey is for this reason solely. It's not full white so there shouldn't be able burn-in issues.
I commonly see image-retention (keyboard shadows etc.) but not burn-in. I highly doubt anyone has the latter.

Soooo, this is a non-issue. Good to know!
You have any idea how long it takes for burn in to occurred? Last time I try, it took a week or two, with the screen on 24/7 to get a little burn in on my laptop LCD display. It went away after I turn off the screen for a night.
For the nexus to have a burn-in onscreen button happened? Good luck with that.

The issue I'm seeing is that when the screen is white or a light color, I can see where the Navigation Menu used to be (when I hide it).
I hide top and bottom bar so I avoid any burn in.

Since we don't have LED notifications you guys can check out Dynamic Notifications. Gives a nice clean look to notifications https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.greatbytes.activenotifications

He didn't say there was something wrong with it, apparently he prefers that app. Does flash alerts give led notification? I thought it was just a flash from the flashlight.

Easy solution to those missing the led, we can just make an app that makes the second screen flash different colors at full brightness. Heck let's turn it on permanently and the screen and go rainbow in equal divisions of color based on the order the notifications come in. I'm tempted to put a /s on this but I think I might actually use it if it became available...

Agreed. The camera led is obnoxious. Brighter, blinking, colored images on the second screen needs to happen.....why on earth are All the second screen notifications white?!
Also.....missed call AND text reminders need to be standard on new devices. Is there a rational explanation why my brand new tech still needs an app for common sense stuff?

Hi all. New on this phone, I've searched for this but could not find, so maybe someone here could help me. Is there a gesture to quickly turn off screen (had a gesture on my old nexus that was double tapping home button)?
Thanks in advance!
You could try 'Edge sense plus' (check the play store) to use the squeeze function to turn off the screen instead of launching the assistant. Personally I use nova launcher and swipe up to turn off the screen.
I'm sure there are other alternatives as well, but that's my 2 cents
I use the app called edge gestures on the play store. Works very well for me!

Do you have the possibility to use the fingerprint sensor to turn screen off?

Yeah it does cost some money but I can't remember exactly how much. There is a native screen lock option for Android 9+ and I don't think there is any fingerprint gesture. It's primarily for the edges of your screen.

You could try turning on accessibility menu in the accessibility settings if you don't mind having a small icon to the right of the pill at the bottom of the screen. When you click it, there are several options given and lock screen is one. It's not a simple gesture swipe or a simple double tap but it may be an option.

Tried that, and it works, it appears a person button, and when you press it, it gives a lot of options, and the lock screen is one of them. I will keep using until a easier solution if found. I can not believe android will not include a gesture option for this by default.
I hate to have to press a button to lock the screen, they end up breaking/wearing so fast.
Thanks all for your responses, and other solutions are welcome. Cheers! :good:

Check this widget out. It is invisible and adds double tap to lock functionality to any launcher.

Works without root in Android P or with root in Oreo and lower. In both cases, fingerprint unlocking works afterwards.

I was watching a YouTube video earlier and noticed burn-in. The home button and the line that separates the navbar from the rest of the screen. If Google would get rid of the navbar it would almost eliminate burn-in. I got an RMA so hopefully my next one won't do it. Here's the pics I sent Google.
+1, I've had mine for just over two weeks and I'm already seeing navbar burn in. Question, did yours seem to have status bar burn in when you first turned it on? I swear I saw the burn in line going across, it lines up with the bottom of the notch

I strongly recommend NavBarApps

You need some color to fill the empty navigation bar. Your entire screen is wearing pixels but the nav bar is not. That's how you're getting screen burn. Notice how every other manufacturer is doing that but Google.
I've used this app on my P2XL with success.

I was using Navbar Apps. Still burnt in the home button.
It also matters what color you use. Red doesn't wear at all. Green is middle of the road and blue is the most wearing. I usually stick to light gray navigation and status bar colors to include all pixels as much as possible and still see buttons and icons.
