Updates? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions & Answers

Got my Verizon note 8 direct from Samsung. Immediately after setup, I told it to not do automatic updates. Next day it wanted to update. Now every time I pick up my phone I have to tell it I don't want to update.
Is there more than a 10% chance that this phone will get an unlocked? (Playing with roms would be awesome)
Or should I just take the Updates?

The update if I remember correctly added some camera stability improvements and the ability to disable Bixby. I took the update and haven't looked back.

I am sure they will get root, but really low chance of getting unlocked boot loader.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...-discussion-snapdragon-note-8-models-t3670091

I'm finally tired of crack flashing. Give me root and I'll b e happy. I don't care about BL unlock, which is not likely anyway.

Same. I just want root for a few minor things which improve the usability 100 fold.

I woke up this morning to my vzw note 8 wanting to update. ima hold off atm.

If anyone gets this update please let us know! I am currently still on "N910AUCU1ANIE" and have not received the update for "XXU1ANJ4". Look forward to see what positive enhancements this has, have read good comments about the positive impact on battery life.

The update mentioned isn't for the AT&T variant. No word on when we will get our update.
That's for T-Mobile variant
Even if we do get an update, there is no way I am applying it. I want root, and don't want to risk any chance that I might miss it.
At Att pace for updates we wont get it until next year and when we do it will mess our phones up.

You might not have a choice. AT&T is known for force pushing updates to phones and without root you can't stop the OTA push service so you don't really have anything to worry about. Unless you disconnect from the network, you'll eventually get the update without a choice. This happened to a lot of people on the Galaxy S4 when they patched loki. Many went to bed to wake up the next morning with there phone rebooted. Some didn't even notice planning to install loki the next day only to find AT&T pushed the patch to there phone unless you remembered to disable OTA service.

So now what?? Since Verizon will NOT be bricking the Note 7's on their network?

Get a different phone. No one will be working on rooting software on a now seriously dead phone. They will keep making this even more difficult and that will make most folks turn them in.

Glad I kept mine. Got to keep it for free, 100% battery and OTA's blocked

We will get shut down after the holidays. Verizon just doesn't want to shut it down during the holidays and Samsung is giving the carriers 30 days to push the update. My thoughts anyways.
I still need to go back to the 100% firmware, which I hope to do soon. Would rather wait to see what the Galaxy S8 rolls out since we are only 60-90days away.

If the IMEI is not blocked, and the phone works on VZ networks, then it is not "dead". Just because a phone doesn't get "updates" does not make it dead. I always root and block updates on new phones first thing out - don't want updates, they usually cause more problems than they are worth. The phone will work fine for many years without updates. Who really uses a phone for more than 2 to 3 years at most anyway? For me it is usually one year, then on to the next version. I actually skipped the Note 5 for obvious reasons and stuck with my Note 4 for two years. I put Morom on it first thing I got it after rooting (it was a Dev Note 4) - never took a single update, not a problem. It was set up just the way I wanted, had xposed running and the obvious things one does with Titanium, no need to mess with it. The N7 will work for several years just fine as long as the IMEI is not blocked and a person disables update apk's.

They will get to that point. They will disable the imei. If you keep your note beyond the update that Verizon will roll out after the holidays they will begin to block imei. You don't think so? Why would Samsung push an OTA to disable charging if they didn't mean to eliminate any notes in the field?

I don't know - who actually knows? Is it legal to block an IMEI like that in the US? IDK. We will see. If it happens, it happens. As of now, I have a free N7 I am using. I returned my OG N7 - sent it out friday. I will ride this N7 as long as possible. If I have to make a switch should they IMEI block my N7, I will go back to my Dev N4 until either a worthy updrade is available - either an S8 or Note 8.
As far as why Samsung would push an OTA to disable charging to those daft enough to not have update apk's disabled... well they have to cover their arses, and if they have an OTA that disables a phone, they are not responsible for those owners who have somehow either through root or a package disabler app made their phones immune to OTA's. Will VZ block all N7 IMEI's? Dunno. Hope not. Can't control if they do and if they do, then I will adjust with the option that makes the most sense at that time. Hoping to just ride out my N7 until the N8 is out. Worst case I will get the largest display S8 when it is available. We just don't know what the S8 is gonna be for sure yet, nor what the N8 will be either.
That's certainly one way of doing it.
I have replacement Note 7 from Verizon, PHE firmware, 100% refunded back to Verizon account and refunded back to my credit card, moved to T-Mobile . I blocked OTA update via PDP app. T-Mobile doesn't even recognize my phone.
Because I am at the different network, I don't think my IMEI will be blocked unless Samsung disables my phone's IMEI.
Any thought?

Note 7 update to disable charging coming 12/27
Here: https://explore.t-mobile.com/samsung-galaxy-note7-recall
Better learn how to disable updates FAST! Thankfully, I found it on here and it doesn't take Package Disabler Pro to do it.
Randomly had a return box from them left on my porch today. Verizon refunded everything more than a month ago and had sent me an email saying that they had received my return. Now I don't know what to do. Probably just gonna ignore it.

Let them block a phone from powering on and then have somebody die as a result of not being able to call 911. They won't do it.

It's been plastered everywhere for how long to return the phone. If someone were to somehow die cause of it then it's their own damn fault for keeping it.
Tell that to the first person who dies because their phone won't turn on. I don't get some peoples' anger towards those who kept their note 7. Ok you couldnt get one ir you returnedyours. I bet you buy lottery tickets too.
It's still called a voluntary recall, I'm not sure how they're getting away with taking phones against the will of their customers. I'm comfortable with the odds of my phone catching fire. Sent from said phone and I'm still alive. No one got hurt.

Yeah, because an exploding phone on your face or burning your house down will always allow you to dial 911. Why would they not stop such a device from dialing 911, if it could be the cause for someone to have to dial 911???
Verizon has now issued the email to Note 7 users that they will be sending the update on January 5, 2017 to disable charging capability. Better use Debloat Tool and disable the lines that poll for updates.

Nougat Beta Completed - Official update due in January to S7 and S7 Edge

Samsung apparently has sent out a final notification to all those enrolled in the Nougat Beta that there will be no more updates and that the beta ends officially on December 30th and that they will attempt to push out the official update to everyone in January. Hope this means they were able to quash all major bugs.
http://www.androidcentral.com/galaxy-s7-and-s7-edge-receive-nougat-update-january
And it is officially Android 7.1.1, at least for those in the US.
Hopefully we get it soon, I would love some Nougat. At this point I prefer to not have to root my phone to get updates because it's a hassle without being able to unlock the bootloader. I was rooted for awhile and IMHO stock runs butter unless you spend hours customizing it. I love debloating but I would prefer a fully unlocked/rooted phone to a partial solution.
I don't have high hopes for when we get this updated because of verizon but we eventually will, about 2 years after everyone else

I haven't been rooted for over a year. I was on an LG G3 before my S7 and so far, I haven't found a real need to root. Before, I rooted because I used TiBu to backup my apps, but with the G3, they had their own backup utility that worked just like TiBu, but it's only for LG devices.
But with how Google Play uploads settings now, that appears to work just fine for me as well, so at this point, I have no reason to root. Plus, I really love Samsung Pay so I don't want to lose that.
This is the first device I have owned that I have never rooted. No need to. Faster than anything I have ever owned and mine never slows down for my usage. It's the first device that I feel works as intended. I also wasted a few years of my life with this stuff and just don't have the motivation anymore. Especially without an unlocked bootloader and custom recovery, I'd never.

Agree completely. The root process works well etc but I had to go through xposed and do a lot of tweaks to get it running well for really no gain over what I had stock.

I completely agree. The G3 was the first phone I ended up not rooting. I did at first because I was just in that mode of, get a new phone, root, flash a custom ROM. But as I started getting used to a lot of the features, and found that the battery life wasn't bad, coupled with running Greenify in non-root mode, I could make the battery last 1.5 days. So, over the last year of the two years I owned it, I didn't root.
With the S7, no need to root. This is smoothest phone I've had yet. The quality of the phone itself is excellent. So, this phone will not be rooted.
It appears the official Nougat OTA is being pushed out, with beta testers getting it first.
Anyone on here that has gotten the Nougat OTA notification yet? I'm holding off on accepting until I know better on how it performs, etc.

was there ever a second beta OTA sent out to Verizon testers? I didn't get into the beta but side loaded the only 7.0 beta build OTA that was floating around and my build number is NRD90M.G930VVRU4ZPK4. Was there an update to after that? Trying to figure out if the Nougate beta -> final OTA (assuming someone pulls it) will work on my phone or if I'll need to find the intermediary beta OTAs or else wipe clean and start from scratch.

I believe there were only two betas for VZW phones and then they cancelled the beta testing for VZW-based phones. Not sure why. Kind of sucks. Probably Big Red had something to do with it.

I swear searching around the interwebs for information on release dates has at least as much mis-information as looking for information on the election candidates during the election. So much trash.
But I haven't found anyone stating they heard definite dates. I'm thinking it will be late January at this point maybe early Feb before it hits our phones.
i have given up speculating anything that involves verizon. nothing would surprise me.
Take it where its coming from but it looks like some US non-beta testers are starting to see the update. "Unlocked" phones only but still....

I believe unlocked models should be getting it before us on Verizon. But, there was a story out that stated OTAs for some reason have stopped being pushed out and Samsung has acknowledged this and is looking into why it happened.
http://www.droidviews.com/samsung-galaxy-s7-android-nougat-problems-firmware-delivery-stops/
Whether the "bug" is in the firmware itself or with the update process that sends out the notifications is not mentioned.

My apologies...I may have misunderstood what you were talking about. I just got an update yesterday and it was the QG1 update which brings in the July 1, 2017 update.
If you are not fully up to that build, keep trying for an update. You might try manually pushing your clock ahead a day if it is restricting you by the time limit.
I also received this new update and installed it. No difference in battery life or performance whatsoever... Just security updates.
Ever since my phone was updated to Nougat, it has been randomly rebooting (sometimes once a week and sometimes twice in 10 minutes). I can still use it fine but I'm honestly getting tired of finding it stuck at the "Enter PIN" (encrypted phone) screen after restarting. So I'm missing important calls without even realizing it when the phone is in my pocket. Anybody else seeing this? Suggestions welcome.
I did a cache wipe at least 10 times now and that didn't help. Don't wish to do a factory reset... It's a pain to setup android the way I like.
Thanks for any help guys.
someone can give me firmware N920AUCS4EQG1, im out side US,pls!

Verizon Note 10+ wireless charging stopped working after last update

Hey all,.
I have a Verizon Note 10+. I have not been rooting the phone because I can side load apps and I have Wi-FI sharing enabled on my account, so I never found the need. The Verizon phone is used on Verizon's network. I used to be huge member here back the Windows Phone/PockPC days.
After the last update on my phone ( Version #N975USQS7FU16), Wireless charging is hit or miss, sometimes it works, the wireless sharing does not work. I could drop it on the QI charger, it could charge, I could try again in a 1/2 hour and it won't charge. It's no longer dependable.
I've gone through everything including a Hard reset, and re-installed everything and no change. I tried Verizon, Pay $200 for a insurance replacement and called Samsung, called them, after a bunch of same BS, bring to a Samsung Service center for a fee to check out.
Can I roll back updates, or re-apply updates on this phone, or should I just root it to get Wireless Charging to work again ?
If I can even root it after being on the last official update..
First disable updates, they break will phones... especially carrier ones.
A Samsung Experience center at Best Buy can probably roll it back.
The highest either one of my 2 stock N10+'s will ever go is Android 10. The oldest one is still running on Pie and hasn't been updated in 2 years. The current OS load is over 1.5 yo, still fast and stable with minimum maintenance.
Security simply isn't an issue even with Pie unless you do something stupid.

If the OTA update didn't update the boot loader version you can roll it back.
I wouldn't root it without good reasons; I use a package disabler and heavily configured stock set up. Android 10 runs well on the N10+ as such.

The bootloader version can't be higher than the rom version. It's the fifth digit from the end of both numbers that's the significant digit.
A rom of the same or higher value can be flashed... is how I saw it explained here.
A Samsung Experience center can also reflash it for you.
