I'm running stock oreo + elementalx kernel with HawkTail1.2 custom governor. I'm getting pretty good battery life (about 3,5h sot with heavy usage) and smoothness with these settings

I had this problem too, I believe it's a problem with decoding of the file, not the Android version (happened on Nougat and Oreo for me).
I fixed it by finding a new app that worked properly, it could run the same file with flawless FPS, the app is called "All Format Video Player (HD)" (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=player.videoaudio.hd). Since I started using this app, I NEVER had that problem again.
Please tell me if this fixed the problem

I'm trying to play some blue ray rips on the GN but the playback is a hit or miss. Sometimes I get sound, sometimes I dont. At times the whole handset crashes when I click the play button and I am forced to take the battery out.
I installed MX player from the market and now I can play them fine, but only in SW Decoder & SW Decoder Fast. The HW Decoder lags, does any one else have this issue? Shouldnt the hardware decoder be much faster ? Maybe my GN is faulty?
i have had 2 GN's now and both of them were choppy in in mxplayer on HW but fine on SW. so not just you.
Cool. Thanks for that. Any idea why this is happening ? Also I can't seem to make Mx player go full screen and hide the on screen buttons, It did it on first launch but not anymore
Have you tried using dice player?

Yep, it lags as much as mx player does in HW decoding mode. Mx player with SW decoding is buttery smooth but I don't understand why
What file compression are you trying? I'm guessing you ripped it at 720 also?
dice player appears to play it fine on HW so im guessing its a problem with mxplayer.
also i have never got the menu buttons to go. it was bugging me also

Hmm, same file lags for me on dice and mx hw mode, but us smooth in mx sw mode. Im using dice player trial btw
I'm not sure if it would matter but do you know if its mp4 or .264? Also make sure you don't have any background operations happening.
yeah i was in trial mode also. dont know what to say. i was running a 720p mkv file as far as i know.
sorry.

Yea mkv runs fine in hw. Its avi thats acting up in hw.
I just tested a few videos and it they both worked flawlessly on the stock video player and MX. My best guess would be that you may have something going on in the background thats using your cpu as well.

I'll upload a sample of one of the videos that is choppy in HW mode. Could you test it out when It's uploaded please

I just tried it and I see what you mean by choppy playback. What software did you use when you ripped it?
Edit:
Also its not actually a HD video. - 624x352

Yea I know it's not HD but certain HD videos have same effect. Glad my device is not the only one that suffers on that vid. This was avi demux I believe.
Thanks for testing

No problem. If theres an option in avi demux to encode in mp4 or .264 or something try that. I've tested those types of encoded files and they work great at 720 res!
I have a problem. I copied 2 movies on sd card and tried to watch them today. One was brrip of 1.40gb and one dvdrip of 1.40 gb. Both movies were frameing with the default player. With mx player the things improved only a little when i was using S/W decoder but it still wasn't near to being fluent. What's the problem with this device. I thought it plays even 1080p videos fluent. Can somebody help me with an advice?Maybe i did something wrong?

Certain codecs are missing from android, meaning that h/w can't be used to play them. 1080p is not that easy to play when there is no GPU supporting the CPU. *.mkv and *.mp4 files should play fine, since those both are usually h264.
http://developer.android.com/guide/appendix/media-formats.html
So this means .mkv and mp4 will play fluid till 1080p and files that are lower resolution than hd but are .avi will play jerky? No solution for these ones to play fluid? I tried with mx player (arm v7 neon) but almost the same.only a bit better.

C'mon man. FullHD AVI files even on some PC will stutter with playing. Download some h264 video and then compare.

The problem is they weren't even hd. this is the file name "Jack.Reacher.2012.BRRip.XviD.AC3.RoSubbed-playXD.avi" 1.46gb and i verified also its resolution which is 720x300 or something like that. That's why i am confused. Low resolution like this should play without a problem even if it does use software decoding right?

Try watch movies with VLC for android

I have watched films without lag with it.
One more question. What type is our processor? Is it armv7 or armv7 neon or armv6? i am asking this to know what codecs to get for mx player.

I think it only shows battery temp.
I use mine for playing movies and have not had any problems even with the avi. The only issue I have is when streaming anything that is 720 or over. The nexus 7 seems to be able to play anything I throw at it over the network when the P6 some times stutters.

My older Galaxy Note 2 Phone handles video (and most other things) a lot better than this Asus tablet. I am probably going to sell it. The KitKat rom is great, but the hardware kind of sucks.
Hardware Acceleration On?

Did you enable hardware acceleration in the settings? I'm not sure about MX PLayer but I get much better video with VLC Player with hardware acceleration on then off. Or just try VLC PLayer https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.videolan.vlc.betav7neon&hl=en using hardware acceleration if you want. It doesn't need any codec downlaods to play files as they are built in. It's still beta but I've had zero problems with it. I watch 1080p mkv files mostly.
Peace.
I have the 2013 Nexus 7 and clicking the link above for VLC says it's not compatible with my device and not available in my country. If anyone else has the same problem, you have to download the daily build here: http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/android-armv7/
People who are having problems with MX Player should try turning the "Software Decoder" on. The "Hardware Decoder" mode was lagging when I first used MX Player many months ago, but it doesn't lag when I use the Software Decoder. Maybe it's because the hardware in this Nexus 7 is not programmed to natively play every video format.
hi guys i am using phoenixrom 2.0 in my sm-t805 tab.... the problem i am facing is that suddenly in the middle of the playback mx player decoder switches from hw+ to hW from time to time....i have checked the video file....it wasn't corrupted.....i have changed roms.....tried ironrom lollipo, ironrom kitkat, even tried cm romss(blisspop, pacman etc) .......all of these roms have the same problem......anybody else facing it???how to solve it??
Give us a link to the file so we can test playback ourselves, or just disable hardware+ and just use hardware.
John.
no no mayb i wasn't clear.....it isn't only one file......any video file will show this problem from time to time.......it's not a problem with video file i guess becoz if i play same file twice mayb once it'll play without problem....second time it'll show the above mentioned problem.....and when it switches to hw decoder i can switch back to hw+ and it'll play just fine then but these random switching is just plain annoying............... the reason i dont like hw decoding is becoz file seeking(forward or reverse) isn't as smooth as hw+ and sw decoding quality isn't nearly as good as hw or hw+ .........
Sound like a problem with MX Player how often does it happen?, I have the Pro version, but i prefer the Samsung stock player, and i notice with that, the player will sometimes glitch and play the last few seconds again, but only now and again, do you have an android phone, does it have the same problem?

Nope....i used to use xperia z ultra...that didn't have the same problem......it's this device's problem somehow....that's why asked here whether others faced it too.... i use mx player becoz it supports embedded subtitles with their own styles.....only other player that can do that is vlc but vlc isn't as smooth as mx player
I am an Anime fan myself, though i convert everything to 360p and burn-in the subtitles, Maybe Tab S owners who use MX Player can answer your question.

Hi,
I'm trying to play HEVC video files but they always lag.
How can I play them smoothly? Someone has a suggestion for a particular video player or settings? Or simply I can't?
I'm using RR rom (Android 6) and I've tried BS and VLC (standard settings, in BS audio and video can't keep the sync)
Thanks in advance.

Intel atom z2xxx series processors are advertised to have ability to play hevc, but it lags too much even with mxplayer. Best thing to try is compiling MX player codecs with intel optimized compiler. That might help.

Using MX Player with x86 codec I can watch the video but it isn't still lag-free. Anyways it is accetable and I think it is the most I can achieve!
