HTC 10 Stock Android? - HTC 10 Questions & Answers

[I've been out of the game for a while, so pardon my ignorance.]
What's the best way to get stock Android on a 10? I'm looking to upgrade my One m8, and it's down to the Pixel or the HTC 10. I like the hardware better on the latter, but I've gotten used to my GPE ROM.
How heavy is Sense these days? Is it bearable, or is it still pungent?

Sense is light and actually pretty close to stock Android now (probably the closest of all OEMs). If you don't use BlinkFeed you can just install another launcher like Nova. HTC has dumped a bunch of its own apps and have opted for Google's. For example, HTC Gallery is no more and Google Photos is default instead. You'll probably want to install a different keyboard. At least imo. I'm not a fan of TouchPal (the default keyboard now). I'm using Swiftkey, but I know a lot of users are on GBoard.

Good to know. I'm using Nova on my One m8.
I currently use Swype, although I may try some other keyboards.
From my reading, it doesn't look like there's much in the way of bloatware. I have my favored apps for most things, anyway.
Any challenges in rooting it?

Depends on the version of the phone and OS it has on it. The Verizon version is a pain if it's on Nougat. I also wouldn't go as far as to say it's the closest to stock, Moto, Nokia, and OnePlus are all much closer to stock than HTC. By unlocking your bootloader and rooting you're already very close to having stock Android. Stick a ROM on there (PureFusionOS, AOSPExtended, LineageOS) and enjoy.

No issues to root the 10. Pretty simple! You have options. You either go for S-off by using Sunshine ($25 ~ £19) and that gives you 100% freedom or just unlock the bootloader, flash TWRP, then a custom rom or just root your stock rom. Again here you have choices. You can use MAGISK by topjohnwu or SuperSU by chainfire. (Magisk is brilliant in my opinion! ) Make sure you read the appropriate threads and follow the steps there! The 10 is still a perfect phone with lots of roms and devs!

Aaaaaaand unlocking a new Verizon variant apparently requires physically sending it to jcase.

[Q] How do I eliminate sprint and HTC sense?

All,
I am interested in eliminating HTC sense and some of the Sprint bloatware from my HTC EVO 4G. Can someone please explain how to do this? Do I need to ROOT my phone, install a new ROM or BOTH? If a new ROM is required, which ROM would you recommend?
Also, in case I run into any issues, I would like to be able to restore the stock HTC EVO software (OS). Is that possible? From my understanding, this would be possible. Is that correct?
Any assistance you can offer is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Zach
Easiest way is to use launcher pro. Or any other home replacement. Other than that you will have to root and flash a senseless rom.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Root the phone via Unrevoked. Make a Nandroid backup using your new Recovery menu, and then flash CyanogenMod 6.1 (a stock Android ROM with some added features, but no bloatware or Sense). FYI ROMs without any third-party interface are called AOSP (Android Open Source Project) ROMs. If you don't feel like rooting and you just want to get rid of the Sense interface on the homescreen, install LauncherPro.
I moved this Thread to the correct location. Apologies for placing it in the wrong topic area.
you have to realize sprint is a nation wide company and have many buildings. I'd start north east and work my way west. bring lots of ammo

He wants to eliminate sprint and sense for him. That is extreme.
I say switch to a g1 on t-mobile, that will solve the issues.

Some funny sh*& man!
I am definitely interested in rooting my phone and installing a custom ROM. I despise sense and it goes very deep into the software of the phone.
Just looking for the best directions to follow, as I am new to the rooting world!
Any direction is most appreciated. I have been reading and through reading, growing more and more confused!
Thanks,
Zach
To remove bloatware you definitely have to root. Use unrevoked as others have mentioned. Launcher pro gives you a different home launcher, but sense is still on the phone. If you want a completely sense/sprint free experience, the Cyanogenmod is what you need. Just keep in mind 4g doesn't work on it yet. Once rooted, install ROM manager and back up your current ROM before going custom.
You can always purchase Sprint then rape it till they go bankrupt. Then with all the money you made, you can buy HTC and do the same. Heck, you can even do that to Verizon as well while you are at it.

Don't use a "Sense-less" ROM. Most of them don't support 4G/HDMI (like Cyanogen for example). I'd suggest rooting, flashing a Sense ROM (I use Fresh 3.4.0.1), and remove HTC Sense and other Sprint bloat ware via adb. I use the MoDaCo 2.3 launcher and completely removed HTC Sense.
In all seriousness to remove the Sprint stuff, you have to root. You cannot fully remove Sense otherwise you lose 4G, and HDMI (IIRC). Now you can strip alot of the Sense UI stuff out. There are two removal scripts on XDA that you can flash that do just that. Again you have to be rooted. I took the script from OmegaSunS which I tweaked to my liking, and flash that when I flash a ROM. The Sense UI is almost gone, and a good amount of the bloatware is gone as well. Otherwise your only other choice is CyanogenMod.
If you're about to root, it has gotten very confusing lately, I see. I rooted in July when it was easy. Now there are several hardware versions of Evo floating around, and a few different versions of hoot. AND a few different versions of unrevoked.
If you're about to root on a newer phone, make sure you know your hardware version (you can find it in settings), and know your hboot version, use VOL down + power button. (Keep finger holding down volume while press and release power) that will put you in bootloader, read and remember the info on top of bootloader screen (hboot version # etc).
Good luck. I'm praying I don't break my Evo, cuz from what I've seen, it's become very complex to root. One of the versions of unrevoked will screw you, I just don't remember which one cuz it's not really my concern , and, I'd suggest use amonRA for your recovery, rather than clockwork (amonra at least tries to backup your Wimax - though there seems to be some recent speculation as to whether it does for everybody).
Not trying to instill fear, just making sure you know there's a lot of different info out there right now to look for. Good luck. it IS definitely worth it

hey man, my suggestion to you is that if you want to keep 4g and hdmi is to install a sense rom (myns rls4 is great!) then install Launcher Pro (best home replacement in my opinion) and then a guy on here by the name of calkulin has a flashable zip to remove sense. boom all problems solved
yeah just download launcher pro from the market for free. And that should help.

Stock rom or lollipop rom?

Right now I'm running cloudy's rom (4.4.2). I have xposed and a few tweaks going on. I'm just a little bored and after playing with my husbands nexus 6 i really like lollipop. Do any of the lollipop roms have major issues? I really like the g3 apps like qslide and quick memo but i might sacrifice those for lollipop lol. What are your views about stock vs lollipop.

t mobile is in testing stage of lollipop for the g3. I suggest to wait a little longer.
Honestly it depends on what you want out of it. I put it on and I got crazy download speaks compared to KK. The downside is the IR blaster, knock code, and quick circle no longer work, and in my experience unless there's a kernel leak or some dev really tries to get it to work, you just have to learn to live without some of those OEM hardware features.
Other than those three things (and the rest of the phone's bloat, although the stock launcher was pretty) I've had no major issues with 5.0.2 (tried both Illusion and AOSPAL.)
My advice is install TWRP if you haven't already and back up the phone. Copy that backup somewhere safe so you always have it just in case you format the wrong thing or delete it on accident. Then flash and try whatever you want, if you hate it download something else and flash that. If you hate that too just restore that backup and all is well. Although I'd do it late at night when you're not expecting any calls.

As far as I can tell, anything CM12 based will support themes, because CM12 supports themes.
Other than that I can't tell you what to try. I'm pretty sure that the G3 will get stock L eventually unless T-Mo just forgets about it in favor of newer phones. You might like that better than CM12 for the features that would then work. Personally I don't run GAPPS and avoid anything proprietary if possible. What I want out of a ROM might not be the same as what you want.
What I'm saying is do your homework on the ROMs, read the threads in the dev section (and on other sites) and see which ROM works for you with all the features you want. That's why I said try multiple ROMs.
I'm using Illusion because I like (mostly) black UI elements because I like to use my phone at night and a black background is easier on the eyes. Other than that I have no good reason for picking that over any other LP ROM.
Anyway, good luck.

To root or not to root

I have rooted and loaded custom ROMs on many of my phones.
I don't know why but for some reason I am bit hesitant on rooting my G3.
I see now there is a quick and easy script to root even the Lollipop 5.01 OTA 850 so I am tempted to do this.
My question is if I don't want to load a custom ROM will the debloating and removal of carrier IQ make a noticeable difference to performance or just give a warm cuddly feeling that these are now gone?
I know there is tweakbox but it appears that besides some nice customizing that can be done there is not much on he performance side of things?
I am finding 5.01 a little laggy and it would be nice to get the phone running smoothly.
Thanks.

Hi @samsat,
Sharing my thoughts:
1. As you have experience in rooting many of your phones, is "loading of custom ROMs" your only reason for rooting? I guess that would be the best starting point/question that you will need to ask (and answer). In my case, I go with the principle of "if you don't need it, then don't do it".
2. I want to point out though that "need" and "want" are two different things ("need" is a "must have" and "want" is a "nice-to-have"). So in your case, did you root your previous phones as a necessity? I have friends who never rooted their phones and are happy with it...some users are either not "tinkerers" (if there is such a term) or never use apps that require root.
3. Some users, on the other hand, need to root (i.e. whether they like it or not, they have to do it) because some apps do require root.
I can't comment on "carrier IQ" as I am not from the US, sorry.
Thanks for the reply.
I have no plans just yet to load a different ROM, main problem is that there appears to a camera problem with other ROMS that has not been resolved.
My main reason would be rooting in order to do things that would improve performance using the stock ROM.
I also believe in not doing this if it's not needed.
Not sure if this will help, I have rooted for a few reasons
1. Dpi to 530
2. Adaway / hosts access
3. Faster GPS
4. Titanium backup
5. Debloat
6. Greenify
Still on bumped stock with no intention of custom rom - it's liquidy enough. Customised my s3 to within an inch of its life, and couldn't be bothered.
Happy with the g3
Sent from my LG-D855 using Tapatalk
Those are things that having root access will allow you to do.
My question is did you notice a difference in performance (not just faster GPS) before and after you did this?
Oh and by the way I love the username! Even got it with my soutpiel Afrikaans!
+1 on Titanium Backup and Greenify

It's not needed then. There isn't a mass amount running or affecting general performance to get rid of.
Question is, why would you not want to do it for all the other reasons posted above. IMO, it's so easy to do, you'd be daft not to.
Thanks Ryarni.
That's the reply I was looking for. At the moment, my only reason to root would be as a path to improve performance which can be a bit laggy at times.
The other reasons above are so that one can run other apps. that require root.
I have no need for those apps. right now but it's good to know root is there should I need them.
I have had a bunch of G3's go bad on me requiring replacement under warranty. I want to give the latest replacement some time to settle in before I start fiddling!

Stock android on HTC 10?

Hi guys!
I have had a HTC M8 for over 2 years and have loved it very much. I didn't like sense very much so I put the google play edition ROM on there so that it was just running stock android and it became my dream phone. I decided to upgrade to the HTC 10, but sense is driving me insane again (although it is much better) i do just want to go back to stock android again. There's no GPE version of this phone, is there still a way that I can go to stock android on my HTC 10?
Thanks in advance
Brad
Great question, and I wish there was an option, in some settings somewhere to just reboot into stock Android, but sadly nothing like that.
Only option is to wait for CM13 ROM's to come out this Summer to get away from Sense
There will be non-sense ROM's out soon.
Btw, if you just replace the launcher to something like Nova or whatever you like, Sense is basically not even there anymore.

So Cyanogen Mod is effectively just stock android? Or will there be subtle differences between that and the Google Play Edition ROM that I'm used to?

Yes I did install the Google Now launcher, and it has definitely helped, but there are still some little things about Sense that are driving me crazy. Little things... I just have minor OCD... I hate HTC's lockscreen clock, I don't have my location services on all the time, so the lockscreen clock gives me a "weather unavaliable" error 24/7. I don't even want weather on my lockscreen. And also it drives me crazy that I can't install Google's phone app, that is way better than HTC's. And also I can't uninstall Instagram, and Facebook etc, apps that I don't even use!
I know these things probably seem silly to most people but they're really annoying to me, hence why I want to go back to lovely stock Android! Do you know if I could achieve what I want simply by rooting my phone? Or would flashing a new ROM be the only way?

Try Nova, honestly it makes GPL seem silly. As for the lockscreen widget, I'm trying to get rid of that myself so let me know if you figure it out :silly:
The unwanted apps like facebook/insta have been disabled on my phone so they don't run background services and I have used nova to hide the icons. They may as well not exist on the phone but unfortunately I can't remove them completely..at least not without root, which leads to my next point...
You can achieve most of the things you want (removing system apps etc.) with root. Short of wanting additional features (even this can be done via xposed to be honest) baked into the OS or wanting a pure stock experience, you can achieve what you need with root. However, I won't go into all the details with the issues with unlocking your BL and rooting and doing S-Off etc.

I feel the same way about the HTC sense interface.
What I did was install the Google Now launcher so that took care of part 1.
Then I side loaded the google dialer ver 2.5.11 rc8-20511
Then I side loaded the google contacts
Then I installed from the play store google Messager and Google calendar and Google Clock.
I then turn off blink feed and now the phone is 99% like stock android!
I also installed Chrooma keyboard or you can go with swift key!
Hope this helps you cause now I'm loving the phone!

It looks like a great option! I tried it yesterday, but I have one (yet) issue, phone is not ringing, when incoming call... I gave it all permisions I could, but no sound and no vibrations, just on display
I installed Google dialer 7.0.140861421-nonnexus from apkmirror.com.
I found this thread:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-10/help/stock-google-dialer-ringing-loudspeaker-t3373657/page4
but there isn't any working solution as I know. Maybe something with root permisions is working?
I will try later and older versions of dialer, but I'm afraid there isn't any working, when noone here get it done...
I would suggest you to try resurrection remix ROM. I think it's the best AOSP ROM out there. Just like you, I have a minor OCD and hate the sense lockscreen, dialer and everything. Gets boring after some days.
I installed Lineage OS yesterday night, and now I'm testing it. So with open Gapps it bring me what I wanted! This ROM looks nice.
I don't think HTC sense is boring, it's just tragic...

How is lineage at the moment, many significant bugs? Since there's no stable version yet, you are using the nightly, right? Since they release one new version every week, how does the updating process work? It's like and OTA update?

It is very stable and one of the best performing ROMs right now, although I had stutter issues few months ago. It's pretty much gone in the newer versions. I'm using this as my DD and I haven't had a single bug till now. The updating process is just like stock. There's updates tab in about where you can see the available nightly. You can download it and will be flashed automatically in the recovery. Just make sure you have the latest version of twrp installed.
Badelhas:
As you say, it's nightly, I didn't really noticed it much, because there weren't any more stable, than this nightly But I read here on the main LineageOS topic, that there aren't any major bugs, so I tried it.
There are some (important) features (rather than bugs) not running - you cannot use home button to wake up phone like on stock ROM (without fingerprint). So you have to use phone as Nexus f.e.
One night, i had about 50% battery and fell asleep, than get up before morning and discovered, that phone is very HOT and without energy! I think I read about this bug somewhere, but don't remember where. Anyway it happened only once and I installed an update from that time.
I didn't know how it goes, because immediately after first install of this ROM it offered me an update, but failed every time before download completed. So I waited some time and finally this week downloaded latest version via update notification, did backup for sure and then installed it. It switch off and then boot into TWRP and did installation, everything alone without any interaction needed.
Then booted (quiet long for the first time) and that's all.
Maybe there is something more, I will let you know, when I remember.

touchpal keyboard or google keyboard.

I just wanted an opinion from everyone on what they are using for keyboards.
I like the touch pal but for some reason I seem to look at it as cheap or freemium aware
What does everyone think or use?
I actually like TouchPal! Since it's the HTC stock keyboard, there are no ads or anything.
I came from a Moto Maxx and used the Google Keyboard on that, so I quickly installed it on my HTC 10.
I was having problems with the cursor moving around while typing. I have since disabled all gesture typing features. I prefer tapping in text to swiping in text.

Try the Sony keyboard, you will have to download the apk which is available via the App/Theme section of this forum. I use it as my daily driver...
I love themes on the HTC keyboard, but I find the Google Keyboard much smoother to use.
SwiftKey, of course.
Been using the google keyboard since I got my 10.
But it's also what I use on my Nexus 7.
I was big on Swiftkey for quite a while but I've been sporting Google's keyboard for the past for weeks, feels a bit more smooth than Swiftkey... not keen on touchpal for some reason.

if you want an aosp keyboard here (compiled from purenexus rom for hammerhead) --> https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24591000424944832

I think the first step would be to install TWRP, then...
I've been benefitting from root and custom roms for years, but only after following instructions on achieving them on 'xyz' device. i would benefit from a better understanding of flashing, and why it doesn't necessarily mean wiping.
but that's probably a discussion for another thread.

Not sure what you're asking. <edit>nvm, I understand after rereading</edit>
Many devices past (all Motorola) rooted. Most of those saw custom ROMs. My daily driver (Verizon HTC 10) has been S-off and rooted for about a month, but still sports (read, 'suffers') from stock.
