Camera quality and non-stock ROMS - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I've red that non-stock ROMs can't offer the same quality or feature of camera. But is there a big difference ?
For those who have migrated to non-stock, do you think (or have decided) to come back to stock because of that ?
Thanks

Picture quality on nougat seems to me about the same as stock (in good light atleast). the main difference is you dont get 1080p 60fps , slow motion and other cool stuff because the driver is different.

In good light its ~75% from stock, low light is ~30% from stock.

i tried one today, in low light the photos were simply horrible. good light gets hit pretty hard too.

[Q] This Exmor R Thing

Is it me is does this low light sensor really temperamental?
Right now I'm trying to get it to activate in a low light room using the video camera and still, but nothing seems to be happening
When I first got the Arc it was running 3 network branded software, and I'm sure it worked then when I tried it out, but since I've flashed the global generic it takes pictures like any other camera in the dark (not very well)
Something sure is that the Arc is the best photo phone in low light condition i never had.
Remember with other phone, when light is not high, it's very difficult to focus because the image move very slowly (i don't know how to explain...).
It's not a useless gadget it's sure.
You really have to use all the options the camera app has to offer. Meaning focus modes, scenes, light sensivity and so. If you do so, the results will be very good. Video is a little easier because there is a very strong algorythm to prevent noise. Unfortunately it will also reduce sharpness quite a lot.

i don't know why camera is performing below par
even pics from sony arc s or samsung s2 are much better than xperia zl

I wish NEGRI didnt wait freaking 4 freaking days to ship mine or I`d be doing my review tommrow or tuesday when I was SUPPOSED to get it
Xperia Z produces excellent pics, so why should ZL not have the same quality?

I think there are also many ppl that suggested not to use auto mode in any Sony phone.
Dont use auto mode unless you're in hurry.
Use manual mode and set the iso to 400
Dont use hdr mode in low light condition.Using hdr in low light makes the picture looks washout due to overexposed.
In good lightning condition, turn down the exposure value by -7
Last but not least choose the best metering mode. This affect the amount of light be disturbed to the picture.Found that spot metering is good for macro shooting most of the time. But dont decrease the exposure value too much if not the picture will look dark.
Compared to my xperia arc s and mini pro, xperia zl perform better in all situation with the manual mode but not any better in auto mode thx to the hdr enabled auto mode..

I wouldn't do that as using higher ISO levels with the small image sensors used in handycams always come with increased noise... That's why shots in low light are so critical. Higher ISO levels just cannot make up for the insufficient capability to collect enough light in low light conditions. Speaking of the tiny digicam sensors, of course....
I find the ZL camera better than the phones OP mentioned as well as better than note2/GS3. However, i agree the superior auto mode shouldn't be used often (except in low light) as it results in blurry (less sharp) images. Try burst mode (med settings) or try manual settings as said above and then compare it to other phones. The camera sensor definitely has more to it, only seems crippled by sony's auto mode with aggressive noise reduction .
I have also the same issue
The picture quality is really bad... really really bad (used intelligend automatic setting (donĀ“t know if this is the correct name in english)).
With this setting all pictures look like 16-bit pictures... (which I unfortunately discovered after I took some pictures)
After this I switched to the normal (manual) settings. Here everything is fine so far. The quality is OK.
Here are some Pics I took earlier. Except one was from Yesterday when it was stormy. Click them to make them bigger

I have been messing with the camera and seems with some settings u can get relativy nice picture. Seems like there is somekind bug in software.

Camera issues

Any other verizon Htc ones having the purple/red low light issues? I just received mine yesterday and after about 10 seconds in the camera it will start to turn red or purple in low light. The first shot is usually ok but after that it gets really bad. Is there a consensus this is a hardware issue and not software related?

Is it the screen itself (while in the camera viewer) that's turning purple / red? And are we talking low enough light where it requires the flash? I'm curious if the shots you're taking while it's doing this are flashing or not - and the ones that are really bad, what's bad about them? Not focusing on anything?
I know exactly what you're talking about and it happens to me too. I found that changing the ISO to 100 alleviates the issue a bit, but its still there. I found a HUGE thread on this a week ago:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=42400071
It seems it definitely gets worse when the phone is hot. I noticed this problem REALLY bad when I was trying to take pics while the phone was charging. It seemed to be better the next day though. I will try it again tonight.
My dad actually got an HTC One today as well so it was perfect to compare the camera. His camera doesn't seem to have the same problem ours do. I took pictures in similar lighting and his didn't depict any of the red/blue tint that I would get sometimes . Kinda bummed out. I'm afraid of returning it and then getting one that is even worse or getting dead pixels. Not to mention that you can no longer root/unlock at this point. Using flash will always fix the issue, but I don't think I want to resort to that.
No idea what to do.
Here is a picture to give you an idea how bad it is. When the flash is on it doesn't look like that but it's really out of focus. Even when I turn the iso to 100 it still looks the same. I to am worried about replacing it and getting one with worse issues. I'm thinking about going the moto x route with all the issues these phones seem to have.

I would imagine those scenarios are a small percentage of the time right? I'm not saying they're not noteworthy, but don't go with the Moto X just on camera alone. I tried out a Droid Maxx and the One's camera runs circles around it. That said, my one complaint with the One is that it can't handle situation's like you're describing - the uber-low-light scenarios that really need a flash. The problem is it doesn't light up the flash when it's trying to focus, and therefore can't focus because it can't see anything to focus on, and the flash shots will, a lot of times, end up blurry. The non-flash shots are pointless in that low amount of light, purple/reddish hue or not. .

should i buy this phone?

hi guys
i'm nexus 4 owner and wanned to buy new phone.. and i'm thoroughly confused :/
my expections:
first of all... speed speed speed..!
i dont mean benchmark numbers or either gaming performance (i don't play games) i just want fast and super responding interface
2.battery 3. developmental support.. 4.screen 5.camera
i decided to buy s5.. but when i played around with it, totally disappointed :/ really slow interface.. i don't know how is it in non stock based custom roms..
does this phone have some super fast and snappy (probably non stock based ) roms?
then i cheked m8 .. it was lovely fast.. but i think camera is aweful stupid htc ... just put simple 13mp camera
g3 also checked it's videos.. shamefully it's slow just like s5 just have quicker animation speed.. but i want touch responsive phone.. not fast animated..
i heard it'll get better after updates.. i dunno how much..
plz help...
I recently purchased one from T-mobile.
I'm returning it soon for a Nexus 6 I think. I went in with my 2nd z3 (junk, contrary to what anyone else tells you, it's junk) and ended up with the G3 because it was the best option at the time.. It's not slow, but it's definitely laggy. I'm somewhat of a power user though, in fact I do quite a bit of my work on the road via my phone, managing to have 20 - 30 browser tabs open at once, 10 - 15 skype conversations going, etc. etc. etc. The LG skin alone makes it laggy for me, but add in my regular use and it becomes fairly bogged down. It's a gorgeous device though. You probably do not put your device through the same paces that I do on a daily basis, so take it for what it's worth. But also note that there are threads on nearly every forum on changing the thermal mitigation, etc, etc, etc, etc. in order to smooth the phone out.
It's laggy by nature, no way around it. I'm sure that you can fix this by rooting and romming, but I'm past those days in my life, I'd rather run stock android than deal with it anymore.
Cheers.
Phone for me is amazing now with custom Roms. Very fast device with zero lag. GL
If I understand things well, LG phones are really performance inconsistent. Some (like mine, fortunately) have no recognizable lag, excellent battery life (I typically get 6.25 hrs SOT, for example), etc. Some, however, are plagued with lag and less than excellent (but still good) battery life. If my reading was right, that was true of the G2 as well.
If you are comfortable with using or learning to use custom roms, you'll be good. They're coming relatively quickly of late, and the stock based roms are generally excellent (Cloudy G3, for example, is great and allows the latest official firmware on any g3 device model).
That said, it isn't perfect. Some people struggle with oversharpening of the text (a lg software issue), and generally people agree the brightness is unimpressive (my old nexus s is much brighter, for example). People generally love the camera, the screen size (and colors and contrast become quite good with a quick change in the settings). It's pretty fast (especially on firmware 10m and up, where many have reported the lag to be gone), pretty cheap, and looks pretty.
So:
Speed: good, getting better with updates. Bit of lag may present depending on firmware (which can be worked around) and luck. Custom AOSP builds are the fastest I have ever tried running.
Battery: has been amazing for me, and generally good for others. That said, not as good as for example) the G2 due to the screen.
Development: Decent, but growing steadily. Bump means all devices are currently unlocked.
Screen: Beautiful, natural colors. Top of the line sharpness and clarity. Limited brightness. Can be improved in contrast and color depth fairly easily.
Camera: absolutely fantastic
Conclusion: coming from nexus, you might prefer the new nexus 6 just on grounds of nexus excellence. You might prefer the m8 if you can get over the camera based on popularity of sense (which is incredibly popular, though i personally hate it) and out of the box lag free experience. Perhaps the Note 4 even. It all depends on you, really, and what fits you best. But honestly, i think this is an incredible device, and it's getting better.
my notes about teh G3
- Speed is what you'd expect from a flagship. Lag problems seems to come from the overly conservative thermal solutions. It slows down to a crawl at the smallest sign of heat. I live in a tropical country, so this turned out to be a problem, until I flashed some thermal mods.
- Battery problems seems to come from rogue apps. I had it, and it was caused due to rogue apps.
- I find the screen overly bright. Yet, I think I became sensible to light, I don't know. I use my laptop at 20% brightness at all times.
- Screen is gorgeous. So is the G2. FHD wouldn't hurt, as QHD is overkill, specially for the battery. If I could choose, I'd get a FHD G3. Colors and sharpness are excellent though. Did I mention it kills the battery big time? Yeah, like battery statistics line is pretty much horizontal with screen off, but when it turns on, it's like 60 degrees downward.
- Development is slow. Only this month it really has started, although this device has been launched months ago. Some devs were holding it, so LG wouldn't block them off on the next bootloader updates, I guess.
- The camera is outstanding. It's really a beast, apart from the small sensor. The OIS really makes up to it. The dual LED (white/amber) allows for very accurate colors, and the laser AF, even though I don't feel much about how it works (I can't really notice it to be ~this~ fast. It's just ok), I like to brag my phone can fire lasers - pew pew.
I think it's the best camera around, which doesn't, specially, breaks the phone body harmony, and take excellent pictures. Oh, and the front camera has a wide angle.
- It's not water-proof. Boo.
- I'll bring together everything I like, but doesn't need a special mention: Wireless charging, IR Blaster (which also learns and detects the remotes), KnockCode/KnockOn, centered volume/power buttons, MicroSD support, removeable battery (and it's pretty slim. You can keep a spare one in your wallet), good looking UI with great add-ons.
I think this pretty much sums it all. ROM Modding may not be your cup of tea, but you don't need much to have fun with the G3. If you live in a warm place like I do, you'd better fix those thermal configs to enjoy a much smoother G3. If you don't live, you're fine! Just use it
1. Install CloudyG3 (i'm still on 1.0 while 1.2 is out, lazy)
2. Apply ART
3. Enable Developer options and set transitions to 0.5
4. Fastest phone i ever used.
Optional:
5. Root
6. Installed a script from razz, the phone is faster.
7. Changed dpi from 640 to 540
Battery, insane... I had 47 hours with 3 hours of screen on time the other day, and had 6 hours sot on occassion over a period of 15-24 hours of usage.
Camera is optically stabilized, superb in good light, laser focused which makes it all the faster.
Screen is awesome.
Sound is awesomely loud. Louder than a friends Xperia Z3(front stereo speakers, pffft), even when the speaker is facing the opposite direction.
Would i recommend it? I would.
Even the official Lollipop is just around the corner..
it would be good if i could see a video of this updates of custom roms.. every video i've seen on youtube g3 is somehow not so fast..
i don't care about brighness i'll never set on 100%.. i just need speed and responsiveness

HTC 10 Manual Video MOD?

Hi i loved LG G4 and that it had LG V10 camera ported to it.
Now i understand that different brand and all but is there a way to port LG V10 camera to HTC phone?
Im mainly looking at manual exposure in video mode because even after all these years HTC video recording is terrible because of framerate.
Whenever i record video in lowish light i get like 20 fps video looks terrible and laggy even tho sensor on this phone is big and can do stable 30fps in low light with a little higher iso because i also have LG V10 with smaller sensor and higher resolution which means much smaller pixel and in manual mode in same scene i put video exposure time at 1/30th or even 1/60th with iso at 600 and i get little noise while being buttery smooth.
Now this has been issue with HTC from OG days and is there a mod or port that i dont know about that can let me control exposure in video mode and i dont mind separate app for that since im using gcam for photos and get some of the best pictures ive ever seen on smartphone, even compared to latest smartphones its in top 3 definitely.
Now back to video, ive seen snapdragon camera and other, none of them does anything to video framerate.
Is there a way to set lowest exposure to 1/30th so that phone does not drop framerate do raise exposure and lower iso.
I personally dont mind grainy video in lower light but man recording campfire i dont need nightvision but for some reason phone tries so hard that it blows highlights and gets laggy as hell.
Some config mods, api mods, apk mods anything to adress this issue,i would be alfa tester for some mods if anyone has time to tinker with it,im more of hardware guy, repairing phones and modding cooling, thermal paste and pads mod, etc.
Software? Not my kind of skill.
So if someone else has some advice or existing mod i havent seen yet let me know i would gladly try it.
Sorry for typos or mistakes typing this on a phone without auto correction
Cheers and thanks in advance

Highly doubt anyone is willing to put in the work to port an LG camera app at this stage of the 10 (2015 flagship) but I cannot speak for others.
I also don't really use my camera outside normal shots so I don't have good experience with vid framerate, etc.
I will suggest that you try out the Google camera ports if you haven't already.
I have tried gcam for video but its terrible compared to stock,in gcam video recording i get stuttering an what not.
I know old phone custom development is over.
Also how it that there is no some universal camera that can use those core features available on other phones.
Unless LG uses some sort of asic for camera but i doubt it since LG V10 camera can be ported on other LG phones like G4.

I have tried other mods and setting but in any case when i pan camera its stuttery on gcam and didnt try gcam in low light tho.
Only thing i need basically is ti limit minimum fps to 30 because it drops to 20 or so in low light and panning from lets say bright window to darker room suddenly video looks blurry and smeared because of shutter speed.
Im on custom rom Leedroid using Elementalx kernel not overcloked or underclocked.
Any ideas what to try,its not professional camera i know and i dont shoot movies with infact i dont shoot maybe 2 times a week short video and i eork ina gaming club where light is dimm and sometimes some promo video needs to be recorded for social media and it looks terrible and overexposed even tho ist dark cause camera is launching shutter speed into the sky to make up for low light.
I used professional camera in full manual mode to record conferences and things like that and shutter speed half of frame time like 30 fps max exposure 1/30th but you put it to 1/60th to make video look smooth as,and only change ISO and aperture to change how bright shot is.
In any case any kernel api config profilesxml file to change that because i have LG V10 and with that things manual camera i can do wonders for video cause at the end of the day best camera is the one that you have with you all the time, amarite?
Thanks for the answer tho u will try some other ports and test just in case i missed something.
I only used apk ports,do i need flashable zip for better and more stable ports?
Any android camera experts out there feel free to add some smart teach heavy solutions.
Thanks in advance.
Cheers

Not the guy to ask.
Maybe one of these threads after a quick search.
Could be better threads, but thb I've probably used this camera like 30 times max since May/2015 lol so safe to say I don't take many pictures or vie.
Hope this helps.
