I had TWRP 2.8.7.0 and wanted to flash a ROM that required 3.0.2.0. I found the directions here in XDA to flash TWRP with TWRP. https://www.xda-developers.com/how-to-install-twrp/ I installed the TWRP 3.0.20. image to recovery and almost instantly it said Flashed successfully. Here is where I messed up... I missed step 5 "fastboot reboot", and I pulled the battery.
Now when I go to recovery, I get the factory reset screens and click yes, yes and then black screen with tiny tiny [4 numbers to small to read] Fastboot mode started!
I've tried fashing in ADB, device is recognized, but after "reboot bootloader" command the phone reboots into bootloader mode, then I get "waiting for device" after "flashboot flash recovery twrp.img"
It seems now that when the phone is in bootloader mode, ADB does not recognize it anymore...
Somehow, I also lost root and although my phone still boots up okay, I haven't been able to get it rooted again and so I can;t flash TWRP with the official app.
I running the Tesla ROM 7.1.2 RC

Hi guys, I was following the post in the development forum to boot twrp to install the chains superuser zip, but when I do "fastboot boot <recovery filename>" I Just get "waiting for device". I know the USB connection and SDK is working properly because I unlocked the bootloader. I would just flash twrp straight out but the OP said he preferred to wait until factory images were out to do something like that and it sounded like a good idea to me as well. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Never had this problem with my GNex but then I never tried to just boot a recovery with it instead of flashing either.
Wow sorry apparently I totally noobed that up. I was actually typing "fastboot boot recovery <recovery filename>" while in the bootloader and that's why it wouldn't work. Currently performing a backup via a booted but not flashed TWRP right now.
Ok I have rooted my phone a Z00A with 16gb/2gb using this Video youtube.com/watch?v=9l-l96jtt10 and installed TWRP but whenever I try to install and boot into recovery it boots into fastboot instead same as when I try to install a rom. How do I get into TWRP and get rid of Fastboot?
The main problem is fastboot, it's the only thing my phone will load and all the options except for power off just reset the phone into fastboot. If i hook up to my pc and use Fastboot Recovery Launcher I can get it to boot into TWRP with all it's functionality but no matter what I do once I reboot it's back to fastboot screen. I have tried to install SuperZenR19 and the CM12 roms and even formatted data before installing a rom but still it reboots to fastboot.
Enable USB debugging and connect it to system.
Open up the fastboot (command prompt) and flash the recovery again.
Use SSJ Tethered Version (Permanent) version and then try.
Make sure you flash it by using fastboot
'fastboot flash recovery filename.img'
Remove ' '
Success!? Nope!
Ok I reran the CWM cai dat and finally booted in TWRP, just flashed SuperZen 19. Thanks for the replies and wish me luck! The stock os is just such memory hogging garbage that I hope I will get better performance now.
*** EDIT***
Spoke too soon, I was able to install SuperZen R19 but it won't boot into the system just goes to fastboot. The only way it seems I can get back into TWRP is to run cai bat hit T4 and TWRP will load but upon reboot it's back to the fastboot screen.
****EDIT**** It won't boot into anything but fastboot after a reboot, it's not bricked but pretty damn close. I can get it to load twrp only if I go through Cai bat but even so after I install and wipe it just boots into fastboot again. FIDDLESTICKS!!
You are following the old TWRP method Dude.
Follow the latest one and then flash a stock rom and check if the problem persists.
Unlock the bootloader too. To flash roms and permanent TWRP.
Tell us if any luck.
Factory reset from the menu also clear cache?

I got it working finally after I was able to flash boot and droid boot and then installed Barebones and it finally booted. I'm probably going to leave it alone for now.
Hi,
I'm trying to flash TWRP on my Zenfone 2 Z00A but it won't work. I cannot boot to TWRP.
My device is unlocked and rooted and I can flash boot.img, droidboot.img and stock recovery.img but TWRP IMG won't work.
After flashing TWRP using command "fastboot flash recovery twrp.img" and trying to boot into it nothing happens phone restart and boot to bootloader asking me to choose "Normal boot", "Recovery mode" "Reboot bootloader" ect.. and when I select "Recovery mode" phone restart and boot again to Bootloader not TWRP.
I also tried to flash TWRP using "Rashr" same problem not booting to TWRP.
Tethered CWM is working and I was able to boot to it but not TWRP
On the other hand if I flash back stock recovery and boot to it boots just fine.
What's wrong? Any idea guys?
Thanks in advance..
So, you've unlocked the bootloader or did you skip that part?

Yes it's unlocked.
When I flash TWRP via CMD using fastboot command it shows successful writing TWRP IMG file. Otherwise it will show permission denied if the bootloader is locked AFAIK.
The splashscreen is white which means the bootloader is unlocked. But I don't know why it's not working.
Device is CN version flashed with WW firmware.
TWRP App-based installation
I've also tried upgrading to twrp-2-8-7-2-Z00A.img from within the TWRP Manager app. It seems to download and gets to the "installing/verifying" screen, then dies after a minute or two. The phone is rooted and unlocked. But after about the 4th or 5th try, it worked.
Ok problem solved
It turns out there was a problem with the bootloader. I used the adb commands to unlock it and it was showing successful but some how it was not unlocked fully as it seems.
The splash screen turned to white after unlocking the bootloader so I thought it was unlocked. I even tried unlocking it many times and every time the adb results were showing bootloader unlocking success but it tuned out it wasn't unlocked fully.
Today I used the official bootloader unlocking App from ASUS and unlocked the bootloader. I flash TWRP again and rebooted to recovery and BAM ! it booted to TWRP

Hello, I have similar problem with my Zenfone 2 Z00A. Bootloader seems to be unlocked because of white splash screen on start-up, but I cannot flash TWRP recovery via fastboot flash recovery ***.img. The process shows no problems/errors but despite that no TWRP after reboot.
Can you explain how you found out that bootloader was not unlocked fully?

I don't know why but after 4-th or 5-th attempt TWRP finally loaded.
Hi, I have a similar problem with my zenfone 2 z00A. My device is not rooted. I tried to use the process described here.

I tried bootloader unlock process with the app on my phone first, but after 4-5 times of use, it always came up with 'Network error'. I went with the 2nd part of unlocking bootloader to transfer TWRP imgae file. Now the phone is starting with a white splash screen and showing 4 options: Normal boot, Power off, Recovery mode and Restart bootloader. I have tried fastboot flash recovery twrp.img and fastboot boot 'twrp.img', but still can't get to TWRP recovery process.
Hi. I'm terribly lost.
I bought a ze500kl (z00ed) and played around with root, twrp and marshmallow. The last thing I did was installing marshmallow and then I wanted to flash twrp.
What I ended up with is a phone which you can't boot, you can't get into recovery and I'm not even able to flash any other recovery than the stock one. And even if I flash it 'successsuccessfully' I'm still not able to boot into it.
Code:
fastboot reboot-bootloader
yields the phone starting back into fastboot mode.
As far as I understood my bootloader seems to be locked.
How can I get my phone working again?
The command fastboot reboot-bootloader only boots you into the bootloader, meaning to the fastboot. If you want to boot to recovery, you need to select this option in the fastboot menu. I don't remember if you can use a fastboot command for that, and I can't turn off my phone to check.
On the ze500kl, when phone off, press vol- and power to enter recovery.
some progress
Thanks for the info. I did already try to wrok with the vol- button but it just keeps showing the ASUS and android logos and doesn't start twrp. I've succeeded to install the system thanks to the following site: (I c'an't post it cuz I'm not here long enough) however now I'm again not getting into twrp.

If you haven't unlocked your bootloader then you can't flash TWRP. You need to unlock bootloader. I have the 551ML so can't help here. Try the search function and read...
Try to erase your cache partition in fastboot with the command "fastboot erase cache", this might get you booting back into Android but since you've been playing around without doing the necessary reading, no guarantees...
To get to recovery, stock or custom, you must go through fastboot or bootloader mode. You need to use the volume key until it says recovery then hit power key. It will reboot the phone and most probably show you a droid on its back with "Error" above it (if it's still stock). Hold down power and press volume up to enter recovery.

I did qutite some experimenting today. What I'm currently ended up with is:
1) I can boot into the system.
2) I can't boot into the recovery of the Phone
3) I can boot the StockRecovery via fastboot however I can't boot TWRP by any procedure (Although I was able to do so during my experimenting. I don't understand why it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't)
4) My Phone is Rooted (at least it says so)
5) I have run the Unlock.Zip via TWRP when I had TWRP flashed however now I'm again at a point where I can't start TWRP at all.
I find this very confusing and I can't see any pattern to it. For now I'm OK with having a more or less functional phone but I'd like it to be more reliable and predictable in behaviour.
First of all you can't boot directly to recovery the way you are thinking. Booting into fastboot (actually called the bootloader) then selecting recovery is the normal way. You can't have 2 recoveries on your phone. So you probably did the tethered version of TWRP the first time. I don't have the link handy but you need to get the official TWRP and use fastboot to install.

You HAVEN'T UNLOCKED YOUR BOOTLOADER...
No recovery or custom rom will flash successfully... It will say it will, but you will either go into bootloop or just get stuck at ASUS logo...
Nothing will stick until the bootloader is unlocked, if you use tethered TWRP and flash a custom rom you will softbrick your phone until you flash a stock rom back on.
If you go ahead and flash TWRP onto your phone using fastboot then you will have NO recovery on your phone.
You have been warned...

Well I disagree and I think you are wrong . I strongly assume that I have TWRP installed as I'm able to boot into it without having the phone connected to the computer.
Consequently I HAVE unlocked my bootloader and I DO HAVE a recovery on my phone. And of course I'm not able to install a custom rom seing that there aren't any for my model yet.
I think however that I've (for now) [SOLVED] my problem and we're drifting away from the original topic. Thanks for your quick help :highfive:
So I recently updated my op3 to 3.5.2 Community Build of oxygen OS. It was working well with a few changes from the official builds but a little time passed and the 3.5.3 Community Build was released. Of course I wanted to update so I downloaded it and tried to update but when it booted into the recovery it froze on the logo. So I downloaded the update on the computer and flashed twrp to the recovery and booted into the recovery and it froze again. Currently i have no Recovery and no access to adb.
*When trying to flash a recovery it says it was done successfully but freezes when trying to boot into it.
Normal OS booting is unaffected.
When executing the command "fastboot boot recovery.img", to boot into the recovery without flashing it i get "(remote dtb not found)"
When trying to manually update the OS through "fastboot zip Update.zip", I get "(remote: data too large)".
I also tried to do "fastboot erase recovery" before issuing the flash command.
*In trying to fix this i flashed the boot image of 3.5.3 onto the boot partition but nothing happened and now the phone reads as 3.5.3 on 3.5.2 firmware :crying:
I tried to use SkipSoft ToolKit,custom and official twrp, and recoveries such as CWM.
This would probably be better placed into the, ONEPLUS 3 ROMS, KERNELS, RECOVERIES, & OTHER DEVELOPMENT, section but I can not post there yet. If anyone can help me or find a mod that knows about this problem it would be much appreciated.
