Video recording quality - Sony Xperia XA1 Questions & Answers

I am considering buying it, but I have a major problem with the video recording quality: although the sensor is 4k able, the output is a sub-mediocre 1080.
Is this on purpose or is it some sort of solvable issue?

[Q] FHD playback on QHD display & 4K recording length?

Hi I currently have a Sony Z2 and HTC One M8, thinking of upgrading the Z2 to something better like the G3 or new S5 advance but I only have two questions that G3 reviews did not answer and they are:
1. How is the 1080P playback on the QHD display of G3. "The reason is that most steaming sites do 1080p and the ones than do 1440p are either of sub par quality or of a processed type. A call to one of the streaming sites confirms the same they have two video sources FHD and UHD there are no QHD sources"
2. How long does the 4K recording last? "My Z2 records 4K only up till 5Min which is crap and a complete joke had I known this limitation would have chosen something else, the 1080p recording is worse to HTC One M8 performance that is a slap on its face"
1. that review uttered a total nonsense any screen can playback whatever kind of res a video have as long as the hardware and software are up for the job, it's more depending on the source file itself.

Its not that if G3 can playback 1080p its more of that how does 1080p look on a QHD screen. For example I have a Dell U2713HM with a 2560x1440 WQHD resolution but when I play a 1080p movie the quality looks less than on a Dell S2740L because the source and screen both are 1080p.
nonsense there is too many 720p contents on the web that still looks fine even on a QHD monitor...

Video quality

Your friends are never going to believe what you did. The only way to prove it to them is with that video you took. Rate this thread to express how videos shot on the ZTE Axon 7 come out. A higher rating indicates that videos are smooth (and not choppy) and that auto-focus works very well, and that the camera adjusts quickly to different lighting conditions while recording.

Just wondering why 4k looks so much better than 1080p, even when watched on a 1080p screen.
Almost as if they deliberately made video less than 4k look crap.
I wish the audio quality was better. I found out that axon records audio at 96 kbps which is lower than other phones. I wish I can increase the bitrate for audio.

It has something to do with bitrate. LinusTechTips made a video about this but im not near a computer.
These clips should not be listed as "raw". They should called ungraded or unedited. Too much confusion with RAW.
While the video itself it really nice, and the audio is great in regular settings.... In LOUD settings, such as a full, live band, you get a terrible mic clipping noise.
Here's an example
Video of loud fireworks in Valencia:
I have to set anti-banding to 50Hz (not to auto or 60Hz), there are a lot flickering.
I took a video of starting and running my car after doing a lot of work to it and having it off the road for many weeks. I was very surprised at how well the mics picked up sound. As I moved around the front of the car, many different noises were easily identifiable and extremely clear. I shot it on the snap camera hd app instead of the stock camera.

Here's a short vid I took today. Cold start cycle on the car. The phone handles quite a lot of loudness pretty well.

I was messing around with the Axon 7 this afternoon. Fitted a phone mount at the top of my front windscreen in the car and took some footage whilst driving with the windows fully open. In all previous phones this resulted in really bad audio with wind noise and vibrations destroying what I would want to hear.
Pleased to say, the recorded audio with the A7 is shockingly good! It's loud and clear with great dynamic range and doesn't pull back with a sudden loud noise. Very real. Will install a crashcam app to see how that looks and sounds, although I have a fairly good dual camera crash cam installed already.
ZTE have implemented audio recording with the DAC very well but the mics must be better than average too.

Hello,
Did you found it ?

Camera issue and smoothness compared to 6p

I have two questions, I've heard people talking about how the camera isn't smooth while recording 1080p and 720p footage where it kind of stutters, but this problem isn't present while recording 4k footage. I was wondering if this has been fixed/ if there is a fix for it.
And also, compared to the nexus 6p, how smooth is this device?

Video camera problem

I looked at several reviews of a50 and a70. All video examples has a problem. Autofocus can not find the optimal setting, so the video is jerky! Most bloggers did not pay attention to this moment! But this is not normal for a $ 485 phone. What do you think about it? Are there owners of the device? Maybe an update has already been released that fixes the situation? Example in youtube 6-iwSS_hX0Q in 5:37 (sorry, i cant permissions for publish links)

Yes,seems to be issues with the cameras,no EIS as far as I know, the 32mp lens uses software to account for only really being 8mp. Im not a camera guy so don't know that much about it but most of what I've seen and read indicate the cameras aren't that good

Thanks fo reply! I means video camera only. Photo camera, in my opinion, is not bad. But the video, which is approaching, then moving away, is a real problem. I'm not ready to give $ 500 for the quality of the video, as if my hands were shaking. But I expect that the problem can be solved in one of the updates.
This is a stabilisation issue I think, not a focus one. Ideally the camera software could do some work to stabilising 1080p video using the spare/latent area from the 4K chip, but it would still require some heavy processing which perhaps the chipset is not up to?

May be, I incorrectly described the problem when I said about shaking hands. The frame in the video is approaching, then moving away. Then approaching again. That is looks as the zoom is not fixed. Poor stabilization may be an indirect cause of this behavior. That is, shaking may interfere with the correct setting of autofocus. But I am convinced that the actual reason is poor autofocus.
It's really simple.
4K video = no EIS
1080p video = EIS
As you can see in this review https://youtu.be/rwrDrG23gRA?t=344 (5:43) stabilization is just fine.

That's what I was hoping (see my last post). Good to see someone showing 1080 recording while walking, which is sufficient for most users I suspect. To get stabilisation in 4K you either need a much larger raw chip resolution, or optical stabilisation (probably not on mid-range devices).

Here's another A70 1080p rear camera video, he tests many scenarios. Looks OK to me for this price range https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ju52xFjYz4
If you need to shoot a lot of high quality videos then get S10 which is twice the price. Mid range phones will never have camera as good as high end flagships, that's just impossible.

I'm not sure still. My example in start post shows 3 shooting modes:
1. 4k
2. 1080p
3. 1080p Wide angle lens
3rd shooting mode gives good quality only. The second mode is also a little jerky
p.s. I think, my xiaomi mi5 probably did not have that problem. But i just can not check it now. So I am unpleasantly surprised by this effect
Wider angle shooting always makes shots look steadier, regardless of any other technology. The more you zoom an image in, the more any camera shake is exaggerated.

Question Video Quality

Did anyone do their testing on the Video settings and which option would give me the best video result? is 4k 60 worse in quality than 4k 30 but higher frames? how is the 8k compared to the best 4k option (Other than res?)
