Hi all, I've seen some people say that they have warranty exchanged their Verizon pixel XL and when they received one back it was an unlocked pixel XL. Does anybody know if this is always the case, or only once in awhile. Would love to be able to unlock this phone
Chances are low you will get lucky.

I have had to get 3 different pixels replaced. The one I got last year I had unlocked bootloader, but then my audio died, so sent it back to verizon for replacement. It was locked and past depixel8's use. Ended up having to send it back and the next. The last one they sent me was new and in the box still but still too new for depixel8. So no, I wasn't able to get one to unlock after my initial one. Even tried depixel8 before inserting some on the recovery devices.

Hey fellas,
I literally just got my s8+ from Verizon. I am still within my period for about 12 more days to swap this out for a different phone.
Simple question is this: I know root is out for the s8+ but no bootloader hack yet. Does anybody think there is a better chance the pixel 2 will get the bootloader hacked before the s8+? (It's been out for a while now, I don't think it's going to happen to be honest)...
I don't think that the bootloader may get cracked on the Verizon Pixel 2/Xl. However, you will get updated for 3 yrs, that's enough for me to switch.

Reality is, if you have a Verizon 2 XL chances of ever having a bootloader unlock exploit is near 0%.
If you have a Google 2 XL chances are 100%.

It doesn't matter it's a Verizon phone either way the bootloader is locked like fort Knox. I ordered the Google branded unlocked version for this reason alone.

I may just stick with my s8+. It is a decent phone and there is a working root so far. I would like to compile android though (to be honest I am not sure what you can really do without bootloader access and roms as far as I am concerned).
Explain something to me; if you have Verizon, what possible advantage is there in ordering the Verizon version when you can get the unlocked version for the same price? If you put in your Verizon SIM in an unlocked version, does the bootloader all of a sudden get locked somehow?

No, the only difference between the two phones is Verizon locks the bootloader from the factory. Inserting a Verizon sim only triggers the play store to download 3 bloat apps which can be removed. The advantage I guess is that your getting device support / protection / warranty through Verizon in which case you are overnighted a new phone if anything goes wrong and can bring your problem to a local shop vs dealing with Google. Their deals and trade-in programs are much more robust than Google's as well. Bottom line for the average user that doesn't plan on rooting or installing custom ROMs it really makes no difference. All software updates come from Google not Verizon as well with the pixel phones so it makes no difference there.

No it doesn't.
I unfortunately have landed myself a refurbished Pixel 2 XL, on Project-Fi. The device is definitely a Verizon variant. I'm on the latest patch, so the lock_critical command is a no-go for me.
Anyone had luck complaining to Verizon?
Any luck complaining to Google?
Some day, this device will stop receiving official Google support and at that time I'll be interested in a custom ROM. And then I'll be even more frustrated about that OEM locked bootloader!
There's seriously no way to unlock this thing?

nope.
Hasn't happened since launch...
Well the original Pixel got a bootloader unlock like a year later. So I would not loose hope but right now no.
Some people got lucky factory reseting and booting without a SIM.

Unfortunately Verizon will not budge on this subject, my advice to you, never buy a phone through Verizon. They will lock down their devices and will work damn hard to keep you from bypassing the locked bootloader, I made the mistake of buying my XL2 from Verizon but was one of the lucky people to complain about screen burn in to Google and ended up getting a Google version as a replacement. Pretty sure Verizon caught on though and it's not allowing that to happen anymore.

I plan to buy a good price refurb pixel 2 xl from ebay. Just googled and found back-and-forth sim lock policy about Verizon phone (saw that from some time in 2018, they sim locked all phone and require staying on the network for some amount of days but doesnt apply to Pixel3???).
I know that Pixel2 XL was not affected when it first came out, but im not sure if this policy has been applied backwardly to unsold device in-stock or not.
I believe it has to do with which Android version and which bootloader the device is running.

If it's a Verizon P2XL, unless you don't care about root or customization it's best to stay away. Verizon models have a locked bootloader and no one has yet been able to bypass the bootloader lock.
Confirm with the seller which P2XL this is before taking the plunge.
I'm not sure how it happened for me but I bought my 2XL October of 2017 and I could unlock the bootloader via OEM Unlocking. I got it from a Verizon store. Not sure how that is possible but it worked. Everything I've read says they're locked though

Plain and simple.....you got lucky and likely got a google variant phone by mistake. Just be thankful
No it will be Sim unlocked but will be bootloader locked which won't affect your ability to use the phone on another GSM carrier.

Well, I am a fool and didn't do some research before buying the 3a XL. I messed up. Entirely my fault. Hoping someone may have an answer that i've missed on how to unlock my bootloader. the entire reason i bought the phone was to root.
VZW pixels can't be bootloader unlocked. Return it and buy it from somewhere else

It was patched by Google and it's never been unlocked again. Pixel 2 and 3 never got it unlocked
I bought a Google Pixel 2 XL by eBay that is from Verizon, but I still don't get it so I don't know which version of Android it is, what recommendations do you give me to have a successful bootloader unlocking?
As far as I know you can't unlock the bootloader on verizon pixels. If that's a deal breaker, send it back.
Still a good phone but you'll be stuck on stock.
