Hello.
I'm looking for a new phone, my budget is around 340 USD and therefore Lenovo P2 has really caught my eye. I'd like to ask a couple questions.
1. How is the bootloader unlock procedure? Is it known to be problematic or causing any issues with ultimately not being able to unlock the bootloader? Coming from an LG device, I want to be extra careful regarding this.
2. I plan to have this device for a longer period of time, around 3-4 years. Is Lenovo P2 a viable choice in this regard? Will it be able to hold off for that long, in terms of ROM support and general performance/usage?
3. How do custom ROM development prospects look right now for the device? Can I expect good custom ROM support from this device in the coming years?
4. How satisfied are you with your phone? Would you recommend it to me? Is there anything you don't like about the phone?
Thanks in advance.
1) submit unlock request through the phone and the bootloader should be unlocked 14 days later.
2) original ROM support - highly unlikely. Custom ROM - depends on how well received the phone is by the community. Might be too early to tell still. Performance etc, I don't think any high-end phone from 3-4 years ago can compete with mid range phone's today. So I can only imagine P2 being as sluggish as entry level phones today in 3-4 years.
3) can't comment. If you want custom ROM support, flagship Samsung and Nexus might be a better option?
4) battery life is exceptional, but I really wish it was smaller. The camera is not excellent either.

Are you planning to use this phone in the USA? If yes, don't purchase it. The us networks are not supported.

Thank you for the answer, very much appreciated.
I'm aware that it probably won't get official ROM support, but I hope that custom ROMs will be usable, i.e. that all the issues like the fingerprint scanner and notification LED will be fixed.
Most of the Nexus options are overpriced where I live, but maybe Nexus 6 could be an option(?).
Rom Support and reception seems to be starting well 2 months from this conversation... don't you think ?
(that's what made me buy it + full french 4G support)...

Let me put it this way: I still use my old Note 3 as remote control for Xiaomi Smart Home. It runs on last official Android 5.1. All those custom ROMs are crap. Nothing just headache.
Its a great budget phone
So I was all up and ready to buy a Moto G5 plus and then saw the Honor 8 Pro will be out soon. Everything about it looks great - The display (isn't amoled - thankfully!) and the size, the Kirin 960 looks like it competes with the Snapdragon 835 in many ways. And the price of course is very reasonable.
I'll be coming from the Nexus 5 so I've been in and around XDA a long time, flashing ROMs etc. I don't expect the Honor 8 Pro to be anywhere near as Dev friendly as the Nexus 5. But I was wondering if anyone can tell me what it's actually like for Devs with Huawei phones and getting hold of the sources needed to make custom ROMs or even get LineageOS and all the hardware working? I get the sense (but I'm not sure) that at the moment it's a *real* challenge because Huawei, like most manufacturers don't really believe that engaging with the Dev community can provide a great boost to brand visibility and "geek cred" which will then filter out into recommendations to friends and family etc: It can be a very strong marketing tool essentially. But companies rarely understand that it would actually benefit them in a business sense. So...
Do Huawei provide all the "sources" and resources needed for developing custom ROMs *eventually* or do they just not bother at all in some cases or make it very hard in others? I saw on a Honor 8 (not pro) thread that there are "ambassadors" around. Can these guys interact with Huawei/Honor to encourage them to help out with the necessary technical stuff to make building ROMs a viable possibility, and is that likely to get a good response or is it already in process?
I mean if I get the Honor 8 Pro, I'll use it "as is". EMUI is not bad but still quite amateurish/90s in many ways and I'm thinking I can go along way to fixing it by using a custom launcher. But if there's a good chance Honor/Huawei will suddenly become much more helpful with Dev stuff it would make it a dream phone for sure. Any info?
I've been looking in to this too. It seems you can unlock the bootloader on EMUI devices in an official way so that's a good start.
Have you had a look around the other Huawei and Honor forums? There do seem to be ROMs and unofficial Lineage OS builds, but I haven't found much info on sources, etc.
I have actually pre-ordered an Honor 8 Pro, it looks awesome and at £474 I couldn't resist. I think the major manufacturers have lost the plot in terms of flagship pricing.

I'm in the same boat. I love the H8Pro but all I see outside of stock based roms, is one unofficial Lineage build for the Honor 8. The camera is currently listed as not working still. It's like that on a lot of phones that aren't too well known. My Le Pro 3 for example didn't have working camera on the marshmallow roms for a while and then when they got it working the 7 roms didn't have it until very recently. So it's a maybe it will at all. The problem is that while a lot of these companies allow bootloader unlocking, no they don't release sources. That's a big problem. That means devs have to build things like camera drivers from scratch, and without them being that popular devs working on it aren't usually too plentiful. Also not too much kernel support for that Kirin chipset either.
Well let me ask you guys. How much custom ROMs do you use these days ? I myself found that after changing to custom ROM I found back to stock ROM. These days stock roms has become so good that they actually brings the true character of a phone
Apparently I'm not the only one facing this decision. I've owned the Moto 2nd gen, G3, and G4 and frankly every time I've moved up a model, I like them a little less. For that reason alone, I'm trying to look past the Moto G5. Now that the Honor 9 is coming out, I'm taking a look at the Honor 8, hoping the cost will come down. I've always carried my phone in my front pocket so the size difference over the G4 I have now has me a little worried, but the weight really doesn't matter. I'm really looking very hard at the Honor 8 Pro though since price wise, it looks pretty close to the best bang for the buck.
ehh ..

personally, i am a fan of their emui5, amazing ui tho,
and their harware is solid,
camera is good too,
battery lives are excellent (thanks to emui optimisations)
but my only regret is that i dont have much of a custom roms to play with, given that their kirin chip is not open sourced
offcourse, their is open kirin team unofficially, but they are not working on every device, so only complaint will be kernel sources,
many honor devices has no development at all,

I badly wanna buy this phone asap but every time I check out some reviews over the internet across various sites, a lot of people have complained about rapid auto shutdowns and volte issues. Although, there are some who have been using this phone since more than 6 months and everything worked fine for them.
Is there any such issues on this phone like these people have mentioned? Cause both would be horrible for me. Shutdowns can be frustrating and if volte doesn't works properly, then Jio would be useless and I rely on it a lot as its my primary carrier!
Please let me know about the known issues of this phone as it would really help me to boost my confidence to buy it. And I literally cant wait to get my hands on it. Using something with a SD 820 would be like a dream come true!
Your opinions would be much appreciated.

So, according to you, the stock rom has issues and custom ones dont is it? I also wanted to ask you something. I heard from some people that we can still get the warranty for Z2 Plus even after flashing custom roms. Is it? And does these custom roms support volte? I need that the most.
What is your final opinion regarding this phone buddy? Is it worth buying?
About the warranty I don't know.
Volte works in my area
Zui OS is still under development
The fone is great for this money you can't get better one. The only thing for my is the glass back.... It's really slipperie... So you Ned to be carefull with the falls

Facing two very annoying issues.
1. The UI is pretty bad. It needs a custom ROM but that will void warranty so think about that.
2. When charging the touch goes bonkers. A slight touch would react very differently like the phone is broken.
I had VOLTE problem once, it left VOLTE band and didn't want to go back. Then after some changes in the APN didn't happen again.

Are there any custom ROM which is supporting VoLTE? - the ZUI is not for me, its crap and slow.

Every Indian ROM should, I don't intend to unlock the bootloader until the warranty expires. I have a hunch that it will need to see the service center quite a few times. First and last LENOVO phone I would ever spent. Though having a Lenovo laptop I knew about Lenovo quality but couldn't resist the discount now the return window is closed too, regrets.

I don't know who told you that?
I had a lot of android phones since original Samsung Galaxy, LG, Sony, HTC, Amazon phone, Nexus 4-5...
So I find ZUI (China version 2.5.334 ST) snappy and one of the most stable ROMs I ever used...
About the issues, since there is no top developers involved in ROM development for ZUK 2 it seems to me that after unlocking bootloader and messing with various versions of ROMs even flashing India ROM on China based ZUK can cause some serious issues...
It is your call whether to buy or not...only thing I don't like is mediocre brightness of the display...
ZUI is the worst ROM I have ever seen. Period.
Hey guys,
Having been here for sometime, I find development of our device is very slow. But there is progress. I mean the fingerprint was resolved, root was resolved. Almost all critical requirements are stable or near to stable.
Keeping that aside, may I ask why VoLTE is not available in any custom ROM? While it works perfectly with stock considering the fact that stock is actually near to stock Android.
With my previous device(Redmi note 3), a wonderful device, VoLTE bug was solved by restoring the correct Radio, Firmware and the EFS partition (mentioning so that it might become useful).
Will that method work for our device? I mean has anyone tried that? Or should we wait for official source release from Lenovo or is it that we've live without VoLTE ?
Sorry for the long post, Thanks for your patience.
Hi, we have Volte code in Lineage 14.1 intial builds.. but later its Gone..!
dont know why.. hope someone answers your question.. !
Not sure if developers are aware of it since majority won't use VoLTE. In the case of Redmi note 3, it's popularity in the Indian market (demanding Reliance Jio) forced devs to find a fix.
Well clearly that's not the case for P2. As we lack popularity and most ROMs are ported rather than built from scratch (I assume. pl correct me if I'm wrong). As a result no one has actually gone into it. If Lenovo has not released the source code then restoring some partition related the radio bands from stock ROM should solve the issue right? Atleast that was the case in RN3.

I am also skeptical to buy p2.The development is not great while RN3 has the best development I guess.Thats why I am stuck in between rn 4 and p2.
If you're crazy for developing then P2 is not for you. I prefer not to do any mods as of now cuz I'm doing all my experiments on RN3
So I bought this having no plans for development... Root yes... But custom ROMs... Nah... RN3 keeps me busy with that.. having said that, I wouldn't prefer RN4 just for the fact that it has better development. Look for other features too.. like the battery and display for instance... And camera too... Honestly I completely disagree with the fact that many complain the camera sucks... I don't really see a reason why as in its a Sony exmor sensor with an f2.2 aperture. Yes it's an f2.2 aperture so low light will be bad it's obvious. But under normal lighting, or sun it's perfect top notch.
Only feature they missed out was an image stabilizer. They could have added any image stabilization tool but then.. for the price it's pretty much over featured I'd say.
Goodluck
This is actually my first phone in a long time that I have no desire to root.
No bloatware to get rid of and have a nice non-root as blocker.

Like I said, I wouldn't normally put features above development, but considering this phone specs features and having used it, I'd definitely suggest P2.
But then there are other factors..
1. Bored to bones with MiUI
2. Redmi feels cheaper and delicate (not sure if I'm alone on this). Holding my RN3 and P2 I could easily pick P2.
3. Camera.. MiUI camera app is ugh.. there's no need for explaining I literally hate it.
4. I'm enjoying P2 without any mods.. not evenroot. Clearly not my type.. but i was able to blend in..
That pretty much sums it up. Posts are bit lengthy because I've been through and did a lot of thinking... Hope I was able to help..
Bottom line, you want development go for RN4 else P2 however you can pretty much stay without rooting.
Another option is recommend is the zuk z2

I an getting more battery, amoled display, fast charging with fast charger and almost stock rom.Thats why I am leaning towards p2.AND i personally like p2'a design.Hope development catches up because 2 devs are here doing all the work for this device.I actually kinda feel sad that p2 didn't sell much.Lenovo should have advertised it.RN4 isn't that great in front of this device. And Xiaomi hasn't even released the sources for RN4 still it's so well developed.I really want this device, but I am a guy that flashes roms like every week.Trying out different roms is my passion:silly:.Had it been Moto P2 instead of Lenovo p2,You could have seen a lot more sales
Hello.
I have my P2 for a month, it is the first phone I do not try to root !!
I would like that LENOVO is a true follow-up on this P2. Better than they did to finalize Nougat 7.0.
As said above, if it to a default is the lack of photo stabilizer.
Can I expect a pass on Android 8.0 :fingers-crossed: ... A dream ?
Is there anybody working on "VOLTE Patch" ???
Hello everybody.
I'm looking to buy this phone (new) as a daily driver. I know its kinda old, so I would like to ask is it still worth it to buy this phone? I don't use much apps and use my phone for texting, browsing, reddit, calls etc...
I see that there are a lot of roms for this phone, so i would like to ask are they reliable and up-to-date? Or have they been abandoned? I would like to buy a phone and be set with it for next 5+ years.
I would like to buy a phone with removable battery so my other option is Samsung xcover 4s.
Thanks in advance.

Effects any camera app
May have slight green tint in photos
May only be be able to take a certain amount of photos before phone/app needs restarting
Video recording may not work in some apps or may not save file correctly
QR code scanning may not work correctly
The above list is a rough bug list and may vary on a device by device basis & rom version & apps being used

Thank you for the excellent reply. I'm quite happy at the moment with the Stock Oreo on my G5 which I recently got A-grade refurbished at a decent price as my old Moto G3 is getting a bit tatty. It seems that my old G3 is better supported at the moment as I'm running 3 different Android 10 Custom roms all working good(Floko/crDroid/Havoc).
It's a shame that crDroid seem to only cover the G5 Potter and Sanders

Custom 64bit roms for this device currently have a bug with the camera
If you can get your hands on one look at the Moto g7 play on ebay
It's updatable to stock android 10 and probably just as cheap as this device second hand or refurbished

If you buy an 3GB RAM model, I think you're OK.

Thank you guys. Moto G7 is a bit too large for me as i would like something below 5.5. All the other phones that i've looked at are upgradeable to Oreo or Pie at best. Xcover 4s is upgreadable to Android 10, so i think ill go with that one. And all of the custom roms for other smartphones i've looked at, like LG G3 or G5 seem to have some bugs, or they are not up to date. I don't know is there a point in installing something like LineageOS 14, if that rom is out dated and has security holes in it.

Moto g7 play screen is 5.7 Inch but probably worth the extra screen size compared with other options
LineageOS 14.1 for this device (along with stock rom) is only 32bit so you are limited to only arm-eabi armv7 apps as apposed to later devices which are armv8 and support arm64 (64 bit) out the box

I've done some research and G7 for European market does not have removable battery, and there aren't any i can buy locally. I would like to buy locally because the shipping adds to the price. What about LG G5, would you recomend it if i put some stable and official rom on it?
Thanks in advance.
