None of the official twrp versions are compatible with MI MAX HYDROGEN WITH MIUI 8.5.1.0 ANDROID NOUGAT 7.0. After successful restore of a successful backup, found only one issue with twrp 3.0.2.0 - cannot make and receive calls and messages. Internet, wifi, bluetooth, gps work fine.
And with twrp 3.0.3.0, 3.1.0.0 and 3.1.1.0 - sim card not found ( baseband - unknown ).
Anyone face this issue. Is there a workaround for this or we need to wait for compatible twrp release for this version of android?
Be more specific, how did you take the backup, what partitions were backed up, with what TWRP version, from what MIUI version, and all the same for the restore process. Post TWRP logs both for taking and restoring backup.
As much as I don't care about MIUI I am really curious what did they change to break the only way we can take/restore reliable offline device backups.
nijel8, I found a workaround for restore. It seems that there is a partition handling incompatibility between twrp and nougat 7.0 based rom. Anyway thanks for asking.

nigel8, The partitions that are required actually for a restore are system, data, boot and cache in most cases to restore a bricked smartphone ( so as to boot/start the smartphone ) . Other partitions like efs, firmware, modem and many others are rarely required and optional. The workaround above 3.0.2.0 is restore all partitions except firmware and you are done. Reboot. Go back to recovery and restore firmware. It seems that making a full restore including firmware in one go knocks out all modem partitions. That's it and you are done. For version 3.0.2.0. Make complete restore or skip one partition efs. prior to all this ( better to have in backup) Install app partition backup and restore. Take img backups of required partitions on external storage sdcard. Later install the partition efs( modem, modemst1 and modemst2 ) and you are done. You can even restore a backed up firmware partition through this app for the first case. Also other partitions can be restored through this app.

With all the hype around M, I was wondering if I can safely try any of M based modes and then return back to factory?
Currently I have - Rooted Z00A with TWRP 3 and full backup of my current system via TWRP.
Will I be able to wipe, try CM13, then restore back to factory to make SIM1 work and restore from backup to get to the state prior to the CM13?
I am only asking because I have a ton of apps and information saved on the phone at the moment on the factory ROM and really don't want to reinstall all from scratch if I would choose to go back to stock. (I know first world problems and all).
You should be able to restore to a stock backup that you made in TWRP coming from CM 13, I don't see why you can't but I have not tried it myself so if someone can confirm that would be great.

I was using this method to switch between RR & stock roms to test my own build. But for "/system" only, early time, i still re-use "/data" of stock for RR Lollipop, but now upgrade M, required wipe data clean, also cache too, if not, bootloop. Then i use Titanium for backup/restore whatever I want. It worked perfectly without any problems.

i want to try some of the CM-Builds but i am afraid of setting up OOS again, if i want to go back.
So: My op3 is rooted, latest twrp and encrypted and running latest stock OOS and kernel.
How do i get a complete, full snapshot of exact this phone? Is it enough to do a full backup in twrp? do i have to mess around with encryption, if i restore this backup?

Currently I'm using a OnePlus 3 on 6.0.1 (OOS 3.1.1) but I would like to update to Oreo (OOS 5.0). How do I do this when my device is rooted?
I've downloaded the latest OS off the oneplus website. Is it as simple as uninstalling SuperSU and then flashing the latest OS through recovery?
I also have TWRP recovery and Xposed installed.
Would appreciate any help.
Just flash the new OS in recovery, no need to unroot as it will get overwritten anyways. You'll need to root again after updating, of course.

The full zip of oxygen OS will overwrite the TWRP recovery with the stock one?
I can update with the zip in the recovery and root whenever i want or i have to do this at the same time?

I'm not sure about overwriting recovery, it's been a long time since I've used OOS (currently on PA, before than on LOS). If I remember correctly the recovery should stay if you DON'T boot into system right after flashing. So, flash the ROM, reboot into recovery first, then boot into system. Can't say if anything changed with Oreo, but that's how I remember it from Nougat and Marshmallow. You can however flash recovery again right after ROM, just to be sure.
You can root later down the road, no need to do everything at once.

Generally yes, it as easy as that. Xposed and root methods modify system partition - and that gets overwritten when you flash new ROM. That's why those modifications have to be flashed again after every update (some custom ROMs are exception, but rest assured the stock one will nuke all mods).
Anyways, we're talking about Android version upgrade here and not just a minor system update, so I'd recommend a clean installation (but you can try dirty first and then do a clean one in case you experience issues).
First of all, make a full nandroid backup (check everything except "system image" in TWRP). Copy all of your media content (pictures, videos, music ... whatever you don't wanna lose) to another device - better safe than sorry. Optionally, backup apps with Titanium or something similar.
To do it clean: wipe /system, /data and /cache. That means losing all apps and settings, but you'll keep stuff that was stored on the phone. After successfully booting into system you can restore app backups or install them and set up everything again.
To do it dirty: wipe just /system and /cache. You'll lose just system settings, but will keep apps and everything else. Less hassle, but higher chance of something going south.

I thought you loose everything when you do a clean install. So photos and files are preserved using this method? I assume text messages will be lost?

Media is on a (virtually) separate partition and is preserved unless while internal storage is formated. Still, it's never a bad idea to have a backup.
Yes, text messages are lost if not backed up. There are many apps that do that (and can be set to upload to cloud regularly).

Hi all, I'm currently running miui EU rom 11.0.11 with bootloader unlocked and TWRP installed. However there are so many different twrp recoveries available all with different things working....
So far I've only flashed one rom since I've got the phone but with all these amazing looking custom ROMs around, I'd like to try out a few but it seems backup and restore is currently not possible.
TLDR: anyone know of a TWRP with working backup for Xiaomi redmi note 9s CURTANA?

You should use the latest recovery version available, I think now is the OrangeFox recovery, it's the unified (miatoll) version. To can make backup, the recovery need to able to handle the encryption installed by ROM. To restore the backup... another challenge. I using only data backup and when want to restore, I wipe data, flash the rom, wait for first boot (set same pin code as used in backup), than restore the data in recovery. In case of unlucky situation (encryption difference between "restored" and previous rom, the rom stuck at first boot and need to format data partition (will delete internal storage too!!).
I use ofox recovery, having stock rom in an sd card and migrate backup I just flash new rom and when I want to come back, I flash stock and restore migrate. Nandroid backups are a bit risky I think.

I have a Redmi K30 5G running MIUI by xiaomi.eu (V12.5.7.0.RGICNXM stable - Android 11) with TWRP 3.5.2_10-5 by hadenix.
I am wishing to update rom to xiaomi.eu (V13.0.1.0.SGICNXM stable - Android 12).
Before doing so i wish to take the precaution of making a backup of the phone in case something goes wrong during the update and I need to roll back.
I am not interested in rooting the phone.
What is the best (safest) way to do this?
Am I correct in stating the best way to do this is using my TWRP?
I am considering using the TWRP backup method (something I have never done before).
Most of the online methods show System, Data & Boot as the necessary partitions required to be backed up/restored to roll back the phone.
Is that correct?
In my TWRP I cannot see the System partition listed in the BACKUP partitions.
Yet I can see the system partition listed in the MOUNT partitions.
So I am unsure where to go from here.
I am hoping someone out there has knowledge on this backup/restore procedure (for K30 5G with TWRP 3.5.2_10-5 by hadenix) and can assist.

Backup/Restore will not work with TWRP.
Try with:Micloud,Miphone assistant,Google or third-party apps.
But in general the update goes well using the script included in the zip:windows_fastboot_update_rom.bat

In the past I have backed up with MIUI and Google but I am keen to explore the TWRP option as my understanding is that this is a more complete backup. There are guides online showing how to do this, so i am curious as to why you say that "Backup/Restore will not work with TWRP."?
