Hello,
i bought a used watch about half an year ago. Because of used item, i have no warranty papers.
(and i use custom rom etc so warranty would be a problem too)
From the first day charging was a bit pita, as many items which need to be recharged (Logitech anyone?*G)
But now it is getting on my wick. I am used to use my finger for a fast clean of contacts, but now that is often not enough.
Using universal electronic cleaner doesnt work, too. Next step would be "hard" cleaner (Kontaktchemie 600) or a rotating brush of metal on my dremel. But that is normally not "for eternity" - u have to do it again and again and some day in future u will need to replace the charging contacts. That is no problem at mices, where i can buy a defect one, just to change the lower cover. But i dont like the idea to ruin my watch.
Do you have any suggestions?
Or are the charging contacts "replacable" for a small amount of money? If i remember right the pins are on the mainboard. Ok, so i can open the watch to do a comfortable clean on the contacts, but i think it will not work for long.
So i need ideas how to fix that problem. i am already thinking to give a try with solder. if the contacts will connect with solder. Then the contact would be higher, and when solder ist oxidated i can scrub and scrub... up to the point i will need fresh solder, but i will not damage the contacts on main board.
Have you tried a different charger?
Sometimes the charger or the cable are the culprit

I gently scraped mine with the awl of my Swiss Army knife, no problems. I have done it twice in the year I have had it.

I tried that first, but with them being recessed, it did not do the job. That has been my contact cleaner method for 30 years, though. :good:
What is that crap? i never saw oxidated gold.
Mike
First off, I doubt the pins are solid gold, but most likely gold plated. In this case, I would think scraping off the contacts will only compound the situation. For oxidation to occur, the contacts would have to be made of aluminium, which I doubt is the material.
I might suggest a neutralizer of some sort. Perhaps a solution of baking powder and water. probably have to do it on a regular basis.
Ok...
Some minutes ago i opened the watch.
The charging pins were/are nearly craters. And no, in the times before i didnt scratch them hard. But when using my watchmaker lupe there were craters, and they were oxidated. In the time before i used something like an eraser (on my dremel), and - when not working so good - on dremel too a brush of brass. normally i use that to clean electric pins that i can change if necessary.
But today i used a needle. why?
when having opened the watch i saw that there are pins in the buttom cover, which hopefully can be replaced. The charging cradle is not connecting the mainboard on the direct way. The pins in buttom cover look very cheap, even when sold with much profit it should be not soooo expensive. IF sold. i will look for it.

Take a look at these folks. They seem to be the only ones selling parts that I have found.

I had the same problem with my Huawei watch. I found on ebay the back cover at $ 45 at Shenzen Sueyue Trading Co. Ltd. I ordered it and it came in 20 days to Istanbul. Then it was very simple to exchage the back. Just make sure that you take out the speaker from the old cover and you stick it on the new cover with double sided stickers or some silicone glue. Mine is working fine now. You just have to make sure that the pins do not get oxydized again ( from your sweat, like in my case ) Good luck. By the way, this company is both on Ebay and on Aliexpress, but they don't sell this item on Aliexpress. If you talk to them, they can arrange to ship it to you via Aliexpress.
Well hello, I was dealing with the same problem... I found on ebay back covers, but they were pricy as hell, on my charging pins were craters... like, big craters... I think I may be using too fast charger or wth, because in dark when i connected my watch i could see little sparks between the back cover and the charger, maybe connecting the charger first to watch, and then to wall would solve the problem, but I didn't know that... So I soldered a little balls of solder on the pins and it works flawlessly ever since. The solder tends to oxidate, but it can be easily brushed off.
But the warranty is void... And last month my watch broke, so I had to order the back plate even tho the price is high and send it to the RMA after that.
The problem has nothing to do with the pins! Huawei in their stupidity and greed just used a super-dumb chip in the charger that can not negotiate with 'smart' chargers. Just plug the charger in a normal pc/mac usb and voila. Or dig up a dumb 500ma charger from your closet. Same thing with Trekz bluetooth headphones. Why would anyone save a couple of cents on a product that costs over $200 is beyond me. Idiots.
After 1 year pins in my HW1 look like new. Maybe because I never used supplied charger?

Just found a replacement back cover here:

Sending order now, will update on arrival
same charging issue, different cause
Hi, I was having the same issue, eventually I looked very close in the pin area and I found some dirt that accumulated on its edge (see the picture). I used a toothpick to remove it and now the watch charges no problem. The dirt actually was preventing the pins from touching those on the charging cable, adding extra undesired thickness.
Hope this can help someone here in the future
I have the same issue.
I bought a back cover Here :

I'm now having these problems, as everyone else one of my contact pads looks like it has a crater. In no way does this this have to do with the charger, I've been using the same one for 2 years with no problem until recently, connecting just got worse and worse, now it won't charge at all.
Last time I had a problem I cleaned them with rubbing alcohol and cotton swab, it gave me a couple months but it's not helping me now. So that maybe worth a try before going crazy with abrasives incase they get damaged more.
I had the same damaged charging pins. I bought replacement back for $12:

I'm an electrical engineer and I have the $7 insuarance. Worst that can happen is I fry my phone, say I lost it, and pay the deductible for a new phone.
This may be worth the $50 risk to be able to charge without plugging in a cable every night.

yeah, sounds tempting but I'm not an electrical engineer nor do I have the TEP insurance yet, nor would I be willing to pay the $100 deductible if I had the insurance.
still tempting though. is it that risky to do it?
I thought the TEP was a $50 deductible?
If you're ok with soldering, it should be a really easy job. If you've never soldered electronics... probably not.
$50 deductible for flip phones, $100 for smartphones/featurephones. also, the ones with the $50 deductible are $4/month i think.
I am actually doing this right now with a Palm PIXI touchstone back ($6 at Radio Shack BTW)
I have added pressure joints (taking apart an old SIM card for the sturdy golden pads) so that you never need to solder to the inducting circuit. This makes it so that you can FULLY take off the back over. Just some thin double sided tape and electrical tape does the job. Used 28AWG teflon coated SPC for my internal wiring.
I am waiting for my Touchstone docks to come in for testing, but I have high hopes.
I have insurance and its not my first time at modding the internals of a portable (iPods, iPod Touch, iPhone). Plus this just makes it soo much cooler. Have a solar panel I plan on adding too, just haven't figured out a way to make it look good yet which is a big requirement IMO.

Yeah! Absolutely, once I make sure that it actually works like it is supposed to!
I am moving this weekend, so at the earliest it will be a week.
LOL, more more use for old cellphone crap (SIM CARD from old ATT phone)....
got my order today. wasn't this thing supposed to come with a usb cable included? there is only the dock in the box and the cover in a separate box.
O guess it uses one of those very small mini usb plugs and I don't have a cable for it laying around
I wonder what kind of efficiency the set up has compared to the stock covers for the palm devices. As the coil moves away from the touchstone it will lose power exponentially as the distance increases.
I have Ghost Armor on my Evo, so I can go without a case, but I imagine any case (even as thin as a Seidio Innocase II would be too thick for it to be efficient.
Once I get back to school where I have my soldering iron and dremel, I'm going to try to modify a silicone or ebay-cheapo case and try to inset it with the coil, wires, and try to make my own 90-degree flush mounted micro-usb plug in the bottom. This way you could charge it through the USB using the touchstone, but you wouldn't have to worry at all about opening up the phone.
so anyone have a go at this hack yet?
Just finished mine last night....
I didn't actually solder mine to the board. I put my wire on the positive contact on the board and my negative on the negative screw contact. Put the case back together and taped the positive and negative to the contacts on the pixi charger. Its working like a charm!
Well guys, the ebay seller i bought a couple of docks from has obviously dropped the ball. Time for Amazon....

i did the exact same thing and it turned out fine.. I had the solder gun ready to go but for some reason i couldnt get the solder to stick to the phone.. i guess im a semi newbie when it comes to soldering either way..
Anyway , I think this way is very stable and is completely reversible with no signs of anything having been done.. I feel stupid for only having ordered one touchstone when it was $10!
Guys, This is FANTASTIC and definitely makes for the best car mount EVER! You just stick your phone on he touchstone and go. The touchstone seems to be able to be mounted near anywhere with that semi sticky pad on the bottom and yo can use command adhesive strips anywhere else. It also looks really slick on a black console (mins is and its soft touch too). I have it placed at a 45 degree angle area in the top middle of my main console and it sticks great. The Evo with the palm Pixi back holds on tight and does not come off even with my driving.
I found out that this still works and bought two more touchstones for the house.
Vehicle Charger + Palm Touchstone for $10 shipped!
I'd probably do this (as my previous phone was a Pre so I already have the back and touchstone) but I just don't care to have my compass not work because of the magnets.
The compass while off of the charger still works, just not quite a fast. There ARE NO MAGNETS in the inductive charging back. They are just pieces of steel. They become like magnets when placed on the Touchstone charger. When not charging, it is the same as it always was.
Besides how often do you need a compass in your car or home where a GPS would not be better?
The magnets in the base also do not affect the GPS at all. I have the phone on the Touchstone in my car while running the GPS and have no issues.
So, there is no need to solder correct? Seems people say electrical tape will do the trick, really want to try it but i missed the deal. Anyone confirming this besides one or two guys?
So I've been looking for a nice desktop dock for the Aria so I can use it on my nightstand at night while charging. I don't like laying it flat on my nightstand cause having the speaker against the surface muffles the speaker, and I use it as an alarm clock most nights. I scoured about, but there aren't a lot of Aria specific accessories. Finally while searching google for "htc hd mini cradle" or something of the like I ran across this:
(i can't post links cause I'm new to xda, so you'll have to copy and paste it to your browser)
shop.htcpedia.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=996&compability_product=447
Looks nice, and it even SAYS it works with the Aria. That makes me wonder why it never showed up on my searches looking for Aria specific stuff... the picture has an Aria sitting in it lol. I ordered it up, and it wasn't as cheap as I would have liked. Came out to about $38 after shipping. I'll let you all know how I like it once it arrives early this week.
I got EXACTLY the same item on Ebay for $9 (plus $4 for shipping). It took about a week for it to arrive from Hong Kong.
There is a bright blue LED that light up when you place the phone in the craddle. When plugged, Aria sits snug and secure. There is an additional USB cable that can be plugged into PC for syncing.
Aha, $9. Nice find. I don't think the blue LED is that bright at all.
when i was looking for a dock i saw the one that you all are talking about and found this one and i think it looks better and it only 16.99 so i bought it, it was a while ago about a month
I saw a few that charge an extra battery. That wasn't what I was looking for though. Just wanted something small, weighted, and functional.

Hi mate,
I have a Zagg invisishield (front and back) on the way for my Aria, I'd like to get a dock, but from your observations would you say its too tight already. Have I got no chance getting it into the dock with the shield on?
Sorry it took me awhile to get back to this thread!
I inspected the gaps between my Aria and the dock's cradle.
Obviosly, ZAGG film on the front is not creating any issues -- I have one myself! The film on the back could be more nuanced. The sides and the back have enough gap, however the bottom of the phone (where the micro USB port is) could be an issue. I tried wrapping two strips of brown-bag paper around the bottom of my phone, and it still goes into craddle securely and the USB port makes a solid connection.
However, we know that ZAGG film becomes a little bit "sticky" under warm conditions. I am not certain if the warmness of the battery and tight contact between the film on the phone and the dock may cause the film to stick just a little bit, which would make it be pulled away from the phone every time you're undocking it. Hopefully, this will not be an issue, so I would encourage you to try.
Wow I thank you for informative reply. I didn't expect you to go to so much effort.
It is a great help, I think I might get one and try. Thanks mate.

This is EXACTLY my concern. I know China manufacturers like to skimp on quality and workmanship sometimes. Often they will have counterfeit components and can cause serious issues with electronics. (I've replaced many a Taiwanese counterfeit capacitor)
Nothing against the nationality, just against build quality.
Can anyone vouch for it?
yeah i hope anyone can verify this, so that i can buy this right away!
how difference with micro usb cable? i think it's work the same thing, charge+sync.
I don't know if it has been posted but there has been a surge of DIY of inductive charging in order to get it to work with our phones.
Now I've checked out the back covers and mats that are coming out for our phones and no offense to anyone but they look awful. It takes away from the sleek design and feel of the phone.
Okay enough talking, check it out for yourself:

UPDATE::: 9/30/11
For those who do not feel like reading through threads.
Here is a detailed guide on how to mod your vibrant or any other phone for that matter (without a metal back case) to have inductive charging.
http://youtu.be/0ga4N_Ih9GE
You're welcome.
Love it!
love it , but i also need a inductive charger to charge my inductively chargeable vibrant )
The first link has that. If you look at the video the guy uses a palm stone in order to do the charging. You would buy it as a set.
Sorry for the double post but here is another guide. This one is done all internally without the wires hanging out. In a little while there will be a video outlining the whole thing, if people want me to post that I can do that as well..
http://blog.qinyujie.net/2011/09/24/557/
Has anyone with a Vibrant tried this? I feel like they should and then I might...
The mod shown takes the microUSB slot so its unusable. Qian Qin is currently working on doing a mod which retains the microUSB intact and is all done inside the phone circuits. It will be more advanced and definitely require you to take the whole phone apart but the result should be far more awesome. I'm waiting for that one before doing it.
He finished his video today!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ga4N_Ih9GE&feature=player_embedded
This is what Alienz was talking about, having the inductive charger without interfering with the micro usb.
That video is SUPER detailed and easy to get. I just ordered all the parts. $23 total shipped.
Will be doing this mod next week. Will be awesome when I'm inductively charging my 1800mah genuine Samsung Galaxy SII Touch battery in my Vibrant
Will this mod work if I use a tpu case cover? or must be without anycase thanks.

I have a HP Touchpad and have the inductive charger for it.
The Touchpad is in a Leather case and even when I have the case open (that's 2 flaps of fat leather now), the inductive charging works just fine.
SO, I think it's safe to say that regardless of what case you have (unless it's some sort of metal of insulating one), charging will work just fine.
Man how are you guys getting the parts so cheap? I ordered mine off ebay and it was about $30 shipped.... Not that I'm complaining, it's still a good price but I feel like I'm missing something.

What guage of wire to use? is too thin going to be a issue with overheating?
Just tried the mod.
Nearly impossible to solder those wires without a microscope. I have a very good soldering iron and without a magnifying glass its just not a good idea to do. Pretty sure I ****ed my phone up cause I think I shorted 2 pins. :/
****.
^
You could put a razor blade between the pins to prevent bridging the pins.
Finally completed my inductive charging mod after many iterations. I took my phone apart 4 times because of quircks I thought may be due to the wire but in the end weren't.
By the end, I was such an expert it took me under 5 minutes to fully disassemble the phone. Sad I know.
But you only care about results right?
RESULTS:
PROS:
-Inductive charging just as shown in the video
CONS:
-HARD procedure. From taking the phone apart to figuring out exactly how everything is supposed to go. It's deceptively simple in the video but in practise will take you a while. For example, it is not shown that the inductive charging circuit makes the phone very hard to close using the original cover and hence, a lot of adjustments must be made.
-DOES NOT WORK WITH A CASE. That's right, this mod does not work with ANY case attached to it. The Pre touchstone is apparently too weak for that. That was the deal breaker for me. After getting it to fully work, I dismantled it angrily when I found no practical way of having a case on and using this.
-Costs money. Costs of 20-$30 depending on what you need and get.
-Expect to sink quite some time into this as well.
Overall, if you don't use a case with your phone, you can consider doing this mod. For the vast majority of users though, this is not practical. I will next try to incorporate this mod into a case and see if I can do that instead with a removable slim microUSB. I find the soldering wires on the inside and whole procedure to be a bit too risky.

I will next try to incorporate this mod into a case and see if I can do that instead with a removable slim microUSB. I find the soldering wires on the inside and whole procedure to be a bit too risky.

thank you for your feedback and insight. i am going to attempt this later today, any tips on how to get the solder just right lol that initial soldering is what worries me the most....whats the best way to go about the initial soldering so as to not short out the pins.
either way, i will give my results and feedback asap when i have time to attempt this later today.

I just tried ordering it here in the US:
http://www.partsimple.com/gh63-03870b-sam-n-8.html
$10 including shipping. Better than the $30+ for ordering from the UK (cross fingers)
wait for your feedback.
How can we change this part, is a tear off mandatory ?

Turns out they are backordered. In order to replace it, you need some needlenose pliers to pull the anchor out of the phone part. If you just rip it, you likely won't be able add a new one.

Do you know if there is a video on how to do this? I think my charging port door is extremely worn out.

It's also very easy to replace the cover if you just undo the screws on the lower half of the phone and gently lift that part of the back slightly off. Just enough to have the space to fit in your new cover!

Can I just buy one off eBay or should I find a specific website to use? Also do you know of any videos that show it being done?

I haven't purchased extras yet but I can't see why the eBay ones wouldn't work.
I don't know of videos specifically for this but you can check out videos of basic S4 Active disassembling to see where the screws are etc. It's a very minor job.
Tonight I tried forcing one into place with an eyeglass screwdriver and it worked great, so I guess you don't even have to unscrew the back of the phone! You learn something every day

Wow that's very interesting. I just found that if I push the port in a certain way it closes fully. I shove the right side in all the way and then push up on the part closest to the screen and its very secure.

Saved my life dude!! :good::laugh:
How long are you guys finding that your cover lasted for before needing to be replaced? I've had mine for over 2 years and I haven't had any problems with it.
Mine lasted for about 2.5 years (was slowly falling off, then ripped) the first branch of covers (same as you can find by the links in the first post) that has gray rubber insert was somewhat defective, it can be ripped easily and not closing securely all the time, so Samsung actually replaces them in service centers, I know guy who took his phone to service with faulty display and they replaced display and cover to one similar to Galaxy S5 with flat white rubber insert. I got new one from service for about 5$ and this is a newer one (same as S5's) and to replace it, you just need to undo bottom screws, then easily with fingernail you can lift up back of the phone just a little bit, and old cover (just a piece of it in my case) will fall off, so you just need to put the new one and put button screws back (decorative, round plastic bits you can take off with needle, there are tiny groove for it).

Can you post some photos of it? I'm wondering what's so much better about the new ones. I've had mine for 2.5 years as well and haven't seen any signs of wear and tear yet.
Well, first of all, the rubber base is secured better on the plastic cover itself so rubber won't gonna rip off as easy (mine riped off from plastic about a year ago, and now rubber itsetf brake) if you happy with yours, thats good because as for me I didn't had another choise. Before installing new cover I took pictures of new and old, here they are.
I know this probably a dead link, but is the port door made of rubber or hard plastic? It seems to be made of hard plastic.
Hey everyone,
This is my first modification guide thingy so I hope it is ok and useful to some of you. I purchased an N5 off of Swappa recently that came with the N4 Wireless Charging Orb and the newer glass-topped N5 wireless charger. I assume the original owner was sick of how the orb performed (Google failed with the design of it) and bought the other charger. I was about to throw it away but started doing some research. Some other people have modified the orb, but the results are extremely ugly. I'll show you what I've done and how I'm incorporating this into my 1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport. I want the result to look like it was factory installed and without any external suction cup wireless charger with ugly ass arms that clamp around the phone. I want it to be completely invisible until I plop my phone on it.
After I took everything apart I was going to try and reuse the casing somehow, so that's why this image is covered with a different covering than the Nexus imprinted rubber on the top. I decided against reusing the casing because it looked ugly and I found a better way.
Step 1 - Remove the Nexus rubber to expose the screws
Peel back the Nexus rubber covering to reveal the screws. I ended up ripping the rubber so be careful if you plan to reuse it. Honestly, you probably won't be able to get it to sit right even if you do plan to reuse it. The screws will be at 12, 3, 6, and 9 oclock.
Step 2 - Remove the screws to take off the top and and get access to the PCB/Wireless Charging Coil
Some people say you can just unscrew the screws, but mine were glued in with locktite or something. I had to drill them out. I used an 1/8" bit. Be careful not to hit the board. I hit the board a little bit ( since you can't really see it with the top on still) but everything seems to work. From there just take off the top and remove the board. You'll have to remove the 2 other screws holding the L shaped metal thing to completely remove the unit.
Step 3 - Buy Neodymium magnets and add them to the coil
I purchased these magnets (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001ANVAHI/). They were $7.79 for 100. Since this is going in a vehicle and there's going to be bumpiness, I ended up using 44 magnets around the outside of the coil (stacked 2 high, all the way around). They hold on to each other and the coil magnetically, but I'll probably throw some double sided sticky tape around the edges to make sure they don't go anywhere.
Step 4 - Find the area in your vehicle where you're going to mount it and make a vinyl template
In my Cherokee, there's an ashtray which I never use (I don't smoke). Some people take out the ashtray and put a switch panel there for external lighting and what not. I thought, that's the perfect spot for a wireless charger. I grabbed some green car vinyl my friend had laying around, and cut it to match the ash tray. In the image above I layed it over the top, but I will be removing the ash tray completely so it sits flush. I plastidipped the vinyl black to match the interior of my truck (as close as possible) and to add a little more grip.
Step 5 - Mount and wire the wireless charger/vinyl covering
This will be done this coming Tuesday, but the image above is a test. It charges perfectly and is a very strong hold. I do not see this going anywhere when I'm driving. I'll reply to this thread with pictures of the final product next week.
Nicely done! Love the added magnets
Not sure I'd destroy my $50 charger to do this...but now I'm thinking of picking one of those cheap $15 Qi China chargers to disect

You have the Nexus orb? And yours actually works? My phone would slide right off of that thing and I'd wake up with a dead phone. You really wouldn't damage the thing if you were careful. You might be able to unscrew the screws without using a drill.

Mine works great because I don't use a case, so the back of the rubbery orb sticks nicely to the back of my rubbery Nexus 5! with my old nexus 4, it didn't stick naked, but did stick after I put a wet application protector. I can imagine most cases not sticking and it sliding off though
Here's my final setup and finished product! Head to 3:00 mark for the wireless charger.
geat! probably i`ll do the same on my car
