[Q] which recovery after root?

Howdy, I plan on rooting my tablet in a few days. The instructions say to root, then, flash stock recovery. Is flashing the stock recovery necessary if i plan on using goo to install twrp recovery prior to flashing cleanrom on my device?
Also, the cleanrom thread says to flash the appropriate version of twrp. Am I to assume the latest version on goo is the ticket for that?
Also, while the dev has indicated there will be further versions after 1.2, can I expect to simply download updates, or expect to flash new versions every time? I guess this particular question doesn't really matter I'm just interested.
And finally, has anybody used heimdall with any success with the p600? Google says no...
I would have posted this on the clean rom thread but was not allowed since I have not had enough posts yet. moving this to there would not hurt my feelings.
I appreciate any and all help and of course feel appreciation and give thanks to the developers who have put in such great effort. Thank you.

That's a lot questions! Lol.... here's two answers:
If you want to flash CleanRom, then you don't need to root your stock rom, just use Odin to flash TWRP and that will either let you install CleanRom or let you install SuperSU (root). You can the recovery from their website.
I'm on the P600 and the goomanager didn't install the recovery correctly, so I had to flash with odin.
I don't know about Heimdal. Good luck on your ten posts

My understanding is that root is neccesary to flash twrp. If that is not the case, they why use Odin at all?
Heimdall is a program reverse engineered to work on Samsung devices. Potentially more stable than odin. Open source. I use a linux box but will have access to a windows box in a week or so.

Furthermore, for verification, super su does not root your device, it only manages the permissions of those programs that need root access. Can somebody else chime in for verification?

No, you CAN flash recovery without rooting, and if your not rooted then TWRP asks if you'd like to install SuperSU and root that way. I guess you don't have to believe me though

that sounds great but doesn't TWRP need root in order to be installed? my understanding is yes. If not I should be able to install it using Goo manager. from what I've read the developers for GooManager are very serious and would not allow a non working application to remain in their program.

You wont need to root if your intent is to just flash my ROM.
Appropriate version would be 2.6.3.3
As far as updates / patches... Depends on the issue. Mostly do full updates if something changes. If its a bug fix then I would just do a patch.
Hemidall? No, never tried it.
Basically to flash a custom ROM you just need to flash TWRP using Odin then flash the ROM using TWRP.
You dont techincally need to root unless you want to stay stock and have root. But that is no fun!
Also, the goo.im app does not work with this device so you have to use Odin manually (for simplicity).

I read the TWRP thread, and others are having problems installing through goomanager. I also wanted to install it that way, but it wouldn't work. But it didnt work. It also wouldn't flash through the stock recovery. Hence, odin.

thank you for the clarification! in order to flash TWRP in Odin do I simply use the AP slot as you would to flash autoroot by their directions?
one of the things thats tripped me up is that on the TWR P site as well as in Google Play it says you must have a rooted device. This would suggest that in order to get TWRP on your device it would already have to be rooted. it seems strange to me that the tablet will allow odin to install it on a non rooted device.
hoops I guess. So being a non Windows user, that is not familiar with the Windows operating system,( bet you don't hear that everyday) ,I would suppose the order would go something like this.
1 download Samsung drivers from kies.1
2. Download TWRP from site for odin.
3. Open odin.
4. go to download mode on device.
5. Plugin device and wait for it to be recognized.
6. Drag the Twrp zip for odin to the AP slot, enter,
7. Wait for it to .......?
8. Reboot.
9 download the cleanrom rom.
10. Reboot into recovery
11. Installcleanrom
12 enjoy.
a couple of other questions concerning the SD card. Should I leave it in during any or all of these processes? I've seen where other people have had problems with their SD card not being read is this due to it not being installed when they install clean rom? I really do appreciate all the help.
not breaking my device by doing something stupid is paramount. Lol! as I will be using my daughters computer any other information regarding the installation of the Samsung drivers or Odin would be much appreciated I do not want to hurt her computer.

I kept my SD card installed while flashing TWRP in Odin and had no problems. If you're worried then take it out. As far as Odin goes... run it as an admin and after connecting your Note (in DL mode) just click on "AP" and navigate to the directory where you saved the TWRP file. From there just hit "start" and your good to go. Odin isn't gonna mess anything up on your daughters pc and if you have a copy of the stock recovery just reflash it if you run into problems with TWRP. Also, read through all the different threads/watch YouTube videos. Most of this has been covered many times over and you can see what success or problems others have had.

[Q] Pre & Post root questions

It appears I need to flash from p600Autoroot.7z for v4.3 and CF-Auto-Root-lt03wifi-lt03wifixx-smp600.zip for v4.4? Please correct me if I'm wrong?!
On step 4, it says to "...flash the stock mj4 recovery provided". Planning on installing TWRP v2.7.1.0 - can I just do it here? Or do I need to do this step and afterwards install
TWRP (and flash Super SU)? I'm curious about the reason for flashing the stock recover and whether it's version specific...
Currently I'm at v4.3 (touchwiz) and haven't done the latest OTA yet (presumably it's v4.4.2). It'd be best to do the OTA update and then root, right? Reading the earlier post, it
appears this method works for v4.4...
While posting, also is it possible to downgrade back to v4.3 from v4.4? Not that I'm planning on it, but have read both yes and no on doing it and just wondered.

1) If you flash twrp then you can't do OTA any more
2) The root instruction would work but will trip the Knox and void warranty.
3) Not possible to downgrade back to 4.3
4) if you not use twrp but reflash stock recovery image then OTA would work but will wipe out root if you take the OTA upgrade what ever that maybe 4.4.3?

I used these full instructions for Kit-Kat: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2719750
One step in that is the CF-autoroot, but there are other steps as well. I just ignored the "To Flash New Update" part, but maybe you need it. I was already on the latest OTA before I started. Trips knox but I'm sure you knew that.

1) That's why I figured best to do the OTA first - just had other devices that didn't have root methods for the newest update & wanted to thought best to ask first!
2) I'm out of warranty (due to drop and repaired screen) so warranty is of no issue...but thanks for the warning

Actually latest posts appear to show some issues with SU when using CF-autoroot (maybe due to them being on kitkat?). Appears flashing CF-Auto-Root-lt03wifi-lt03wifixx-smp600.tar.md5 does the trick. Sounding like it's part
of the flash, and can then just flash twrp (figuring be safe with v2.6.x for now).

Yeah you want TWRP 2.6.3.3. It won't work right with 2.7.x. Might as well flash the SuperSU. Most of the root apps worked fine but Viper4Androod did not find Busybox even after using the installer. Need to go back a version of V4A too due to bugs but it still didn't work. Tried freezing Knox apps that might be interfering but eventually just installed that MagazineUX ROM and now it works. Everything else should work easier.

Thanks - that was the post had been reading through - appears after the kitkat OTA, latest posts mentioned problems with SU when running the original CF-AUTO Root method (flashing autorootp600mj4.tar.md5). Wondering if flashing the "newer" CF-Auto-Root-lt03wifi-lt03wifixx-smp600.tar.md5
would be best. At this point feel confident either way!

Yep, will be downloading TWRP v2.6.3.3 and flash it and SuperSU after rooting. After rooting, will be curious to see where I sit with superuser (sorry, reading the latest posts kind of muddy whether a SU app is already installed or not, lol)...

I have flashed twrp recovery over odin. I can only get into stock recovery though. Usual fix would be to remove battery b4 rebooting, but I can not make out the battery on this device - seems integrated / hidden.
I am running 4.4.2 KitKat. Trying to root it to debloat.
Any ideas? Maybe remove some startup scripts or Idk...
EDIT: I got word that it seems to be either some hash verification in the new android 4.4.x kernel or even a locked bootloader on top. Is that correct? And, if so, what would be a good course of action now?

I don't know of any tablet that has user removable battery. I'm sure you have to be rooted before you can install a custom recovery. Are you using the rooting method in the development topic?

The question would be why you didn't use the recommended way of using Flashify to flash twrp?

Yes. Would have posted there too had it been allowed. It is the method described in the t800 thread, where it says you should flash twrp via odin and then install SuperUser zip in TWRP.

I thought that this was the way to do it. I have not read anything in that thread about flashify.
If flashify works with Android 4.4.2 I will dig into that. Does it?

You did not follow the instructions in the first post, but the latter ones posted by bodivas? Then you should consider trying those in the first post - they work for T805 as well.
The ones in the first post work. Flashify I found it in the CF-Root for T700 thread, it works fine on T805 as well, as long as you get the correct img file from the TWRP site.

yes bodivas is his name. it seemed to be the better method. but since it did not "accept" the image, although odin said success, I dug deeper and found out that there is supposed to be a hash check in 4.4.2 which keeps me from keeping the flashed image
Will flashify solve that problem and make TWRP "resident"? I would rather not flash the CF Auto since it is for a t800 not t805, but maybe i am overcautious:angel:

You don't get by in XDA by being cautious in everything. There's enough reports to tell otherwise.
Yes, using Flashify to flash TWRP replaces stock recovery. TOTALLY.

Requires root though right? So is not possible for me I fear Only way would then be CF Auto for t800...as we found out. TU anyhow.

I just need to get the hang of these appy lil spy thingy thing things...god knows what g**gle has in store for you. out of curiosity, so you are saying there is no hash check in the bootloader keeping me/us from doing our evil deeds? how about the article up there I quoted, and what the heck happened when i odined TWRP?

Hi Guys. As following the instructions to flash openrecovery-twrp-2.8.0.1-chagallwifi.tar using Odin3 v3.09, my T805 reboots into recovery, the TWRP boot screen is blurred, and after the Menu appears, my device locks up and there is no way to reboot it. Force reboot by holding down the Power button doesn't work. I've been trying for nearly an hour and nothing works. The Task Menu and Return buttons are lit, but the screen is blank. Any suggestions on how to get my T805 to reboot normally?

UPDATE:
I found that 2.8.0.1 appears out of alignment on the screen, and I had to poke around until I found where the Reboot button was located. By chance I got it to go into Bootloader and the system rebooted. Once online I installed Flashify and installed TWRP 2.7.1.1 and SUCCESS!! Now my T805 is working normally. WHEW!!

A few months ago I got a M8 (international model i believe, it says 'M8x' on the back) and tried to root and unlock the bootloader but failed so I just stored it away .
I followed these videos. Can't paste links...new xda account:

I believe the first video, unlocking the bootloader, was successful(says "Software status: Modified""**Unlocked**" in bootloader mode).
In the second I believe TWRP was installed successfully (It opens up via Recovery) but the SuperSU app was not successful . I don't remember exactly what happened (it was months ago) but when I hit the SuperSU app I think it failed to update as seen in the second video at 2;29. As of today, when I try to open SuperSU, I'm presented with a message that says: "There is no SU binary installed, and superSU cannot install it. This is a problem! If you just upgraded to Android 5.0, you need to manually re-root" hit ok and SuperSU closes.
I found various fixes and such but I'm not sure which is the safest.
Sorry I'm new to android and I just don't want to ruin my device.

I grew some balls and just went for it. Flashed a supersu.zip in TWRP and it worked.

If you used the toolkit as shown in the Youtube video, that was your main problem.
The toolkit uses obsolete (and by obsolete, I mean over a year) versions of both:
SuperSU (current version is 2.46)
TWRP (current version is 2.8.7)
Using outdated versions of either/both of these with a stock Lollipop M8 will cause some major issues. Before doing any mods, its best to read and research to make sure you are using the most up-to-date procedures and files. Youtube should not be your only modding resource. Also, keep in mind that the "easiest" way, is not necessarily the "best" way.

Making a TWRP backup before flashing anything would have minimized any risk.

M8x is the Taiwanese, higher CPU clocked variant.

Also should I use the superSU 2.52 beta or is it too troublesome? Any benefits?

On a side note. Only thing to be aware of, the M8x can't have other versions' radios flashed to it, even with s-off; as confirmed by a few users here (including one very knowledgeable one).
By extension, this probably also means that you can't "convert" to another version by running that version's RUU.
Probably not a major issue, as all other common mods (TWRP, root, flashing custom ROMs) should work fine on the M8x. Just something to keep in mind.

My advice would be to learn how to use fastboot to install TWRP, and skip the pointless middle man apps. Doing it by fastboot is easy, and much more reliable.

No benefits that I know of. 2.46 roots the phone (on Lollipop) just fine, no need to have any "benefits" beyond that.
Marshmallow is a different story.

The fastboot method doesn't look too complicated. I'll definitely look into it if it's more reliable/less of a hassle.
One more thing, I wanted to install Xposed for ARHD's sense toolbox. How do I install it? Just install the .apk file on my device and I'm good to go or is there more to it?

Its a good trick to know (as well as other fastboot commands) as it allows you to flash recovery without a working OS (not an unheard of situation, if you mess with flashing ROMs and other things enough times).
The process is pretty simple, as you most likely already have fastboot setup on your computer if you unlocked the bootloader. So flashing a recovery is simply a matter of:
1) Download the desired recovery .img to your fastboot folder (where fastboot.exe is located)
2) Connect your phone to the computer, and boot into bootloader-fastboot mode
3) Open a command prompt on the computer
4) Issue the proper fastboot command
5) Drink beer

I haven't messed with Xposed for a while, but I think you just need to:
1) Make a nandroid of your current working setup
2) Install the Xposed apk
3) Open the Xposed app and install the desired frameworks

Figured it out, was straight forward

AT&T Note 5 (N920A) Teather Root

Tested on 5.1.1
Recommend to update to PB2, BACK UP BACK UP BACK UP may delete everything.

A not much has been said in the thread, yes after Odin flashing the ENG kernel for our device and flashing a root script we can use rooted apps. @metalcated*posted a script that does push SuperSU into system/. This was originally posted in the AT&T GS6 forum. It's a potentially complicated process and if your phone shuts off, battery dies or you hard reboot you will be stuck in a bootloop, hotbooting works fine for Xposed. Will this method be practical for everyone probably not, but considering we were told the device was unrootable........
Read thru his thread, then read it again, seriously do this. And if you still want to try, backup everything you can just in case you need to reflash via Odin to recover from a bootloop. Here were my steps.
1. Yes this needs to be flashed before the process begins, the script wont run with the stock kernel.*
Here's a link to the eng kernel. Download and extract. Yes flash via ODIN, add the kernel file to the AP slot.*

2. The only file I downloaded and used was this one:

3.Save it and extract it on your PC
4. Verify Samsung drivers and adb are installed
5.***ENABLE USB DEBUGGING*** this is an important step.*
6. Plug device into PC open file and run root script. It'll prompt you to press enter a couple of times and reboot the phone. Just follow the on-screen instructions.
7. After it reboots you have root access.
Root apps that work for me: Titanium backup/root explorer/build.prop editor/no frills.
I was able to delete all Knox apps and debloat the heck of the stock ROM. At no point did my device freeze, reboot on its own.
Let's work on bootloader unlock so we can flash custom rom, kernel and recoverys.

I have tried this with no luck. It seams to be something in the kernel that's preventing untethered reboots so far. We can use this root to unlock bootloader with someone who is good enough.

There are some people looking into this but haven't had much luck as of yet. It also requires a lot of time which I haven't had much of lately. Hope someone else can jump in here as well. [emoji6]

Im not sure where to start. If you want to point me in the right direction i could posably help. Flashify does write recovery and kernel just gets blocked by bootloader.

do we have a xposed we can use?

There is an eng BL out there which allows flashing a recovery img but the signature checks fail so that doesn't work anyhow. Your welcome to try it. I can send you a link for it.

does anyone know whee to get the stock kernel?

This is confirmed working. I rooted, debloated, and unrooted and can now reboot with no worries and no bloat.

One of the last options in the settings of supersu is to fully unroot.

Yes the kernel required to root other builds is the PB2 ENG

I performed the root. At the beginning yes it was laggy but i went ahead download (NO-frills CPU) base level has been 1.2GHZ max 1.5GHZ. Power-save mode ON and ZENUI launcher. AND my friends have been happy every since. NO lag at all.

Fix your links.
First, link 1. goes to an encrypted file on Mega.

Edit: Well that was quick to brick my phone haha. Script finished, phone rebooted to AT&T logo, script failed and now its soft bricked XD haha.
Guess it's time to ODIN.
