Any Alteratives to FireTV? - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My FireTV 1 is three years now and I am tired of Rooting, TWRPing, Flircing, Xposing, RBoxing (what a hero to us all), Blocking, Disabling, ETC. I just want a pure Android Box with Marshmallow or Nougat that will allow me use the PlayStore, Nova Launcher, and otherwise do my own thing.
So far, I've tried the Shield Pro 2017. Came with dead/bad remote, IR wouldn't work, would not finish connecting to Harmony Hub so I gave up. Been looking at several Android TV boxes but they all seem to be pigs in a poke.
Any suggestions for am alternative Streamer and Media server? Would also like to add a TV Tuner and Local or Cloud DVR. Just can't seem to find the right pieces.
Sorry for the other than FTV post.
Thanks.

Have you tried the Xiaomi Mi Box

[Q] Questions re Airplay (root)

I have a few questions for the more knowledgeable, resp. for the people with rooted AFTVs:
Has anybody tried any Airplay-Out app like AirAudio or AllStream. I don't have a rooted AFTV yet and the only thing I am actually missing on mine is airplay out (I only intend to use AFTV for music playback), so I wonder if any of those apps work as advertised and if I should go through the troble of trying to find a rootable AFTV in germany (new ones sold aren't rootable anymore).
If nobody has tried this yet, maybe someone is curious and test and let us know?
Install Pushbullet on your fire tv. You can send and recieve just about anything through Pushbullet. You can even send inbrowser video for most websites by simply sharing the url with pushbullet. Another nice thing is that XBMC has a Pushbullet service addon, which means you can send everything to your XBMC. Pushbullet has got to be the best XBMC addon of the past year. Best of all, its free and simple to use, and its cross platform. XBMC, Android, Windows, Mac etc plus firefox and some other browsers also have a pushbullet addon. Pushbullet in my opinion is by far the easiest and best way to send content instantly from one device to another. You can be 10 thousand miles away from all your devices running Pushbullet and can still instantly send anything to them. Its all done through your Gmail so there is no need to be connected to the same router.
Thanks, but I am not trying to send video or anything TO the AFTV/Kodi. I want to send music FROM AFTV to Airplay devices and pushbullet can't do that.
But apart from that pushbullet seems nice for other tasks, will have a look at it.
I tried it a couple months ago while I still had root. Neither Airaudio nor Allstream worked.
Ah, I feared as much. Thanks for the info, that spares me a lot of trouble.
If only I could find a device capable of outputting via Airplay - that is not from Apple, that is
My Eny M8 Android box does it, so I guess most of the Amlogic s802 boxes will do it. However no HD Netflix, Vudu ... Most streaming services are limited to 480p and there is no Amazon instant. Linux can output via pulse audio. There is Airfoil for Mac( only if you what multi zone) and Windows systems.
I am running Mediamonkey on Windows with Eric Mille's awesome Remote Speakers Output, but running a windows machine 24/7 only for Music is a bit overkill. I love the possibilties with Mediamonkey though (Dynamic playlist, Auto DJ, a lot of nice plugins) and find that almost no other platform is so versatile. And it is actually not easy to get Windows and Mac to output Airplay reliably and in sync to a few Airport Expresses without hiccups, no matter if I use iTunes (bah), RSO or Airfoil. So I was hoping to use Kodi, which is not bad at music playback, but Airplay is one of my output channels and I am looking for a stable and reliable platform, with not too much power consumption. I was so hoping AFTV could be the one...
I've read a litte about pulse audio, but I am a complete Linux lamer...

[Q] Essential apps for fire tv stick?

So bare with me here....
I ordered one and it should be getting here Thursday.
Just want to get the apps ready to sideload.
Not sure what apps to get other than the basics.
Also want to make sure they work on the fire tv stick.
I have: Dramafever,VIKI,XMBC(KODI) ready to be sent via Fire TV utility.
Don't own an android phone, so not too sure what I need to side-load and what is easily available.
The main reason for buying it is: 1. cancelling cable 2. no dramafever app on my windows phone.
So, please post whatever apps you deem useful below.(to use on fire tv/stick)
side note: Is xmbc hard to use? Heard I need to jump through hoops for some addons/channels to install.

There is no jumping through hoops with XBMC/Kodi. Everything installs perfectly, and all addons and repos install the same way. You can either manually install through zip files or by looking through the addon list from repos, but everything installs, and there is not one addon that installs a different way than the next addon. Its the same process for everything. The difficulty level of using XBMC/Kodi is extremely low. Unless you were cancelling your cable to begin with, XBMC is not a replacement for cable or sat service. Do not believe all the people selling android systems that say its like having cable, cause its not. Xbmc is more like bootleg cable service. You can watch just about anything, but do not expect to watch all your favorite live channels, cause its not gonna happen. In the past few years I have actually started watching mostly russian channels with english audio, cause they are much easier to find and way more stable then american channels are using XBMC. Basically ilive is the best thing going for american live tv and they are trying to force everyone to pay, so using XBMC for ilive is basically useless now since they started blocking IPs. So waching everything is possible, but usually only if you do not plan on catching it live, usless its a sporting event then you can always watch them live with XBMC. Essentail apps are really what you want. Viki and Dramafever do work with the Fire TV.
KOdi with Genesis plugin (add shows to library and turn on auto mode)
AEON Nox skin for xbmc. - looks soo much nicer than confluence (defualt)
Retroboxtv - Multi game system emulator with on demand ~640 game rom library built in.
Popcorntime - they assured me the next release should have remote support
playboxhd -just like popcorntime but using streams instead of torrents. - also waiting on proper remote support. most works now but need mouse to enable fullscreen.
STB emulator - Mag250 IPTV emulator with nfps server (think FTA Satellite without the dish)
FiredTV- Alternate app launcher for sideloaded apps.
AFTlauncherhelper - remaps the home button to whatever app you want.
Llama - used to hijack icons in the AFTV menu to run sideloaded apps.
blapktmarket - alternate app store (with paid apps for free)
adbfire - app for your pc/mac to aid in sideloading and performing multiple other tweaks
If getting a game controller, go for the nyko playpad pro. it can switch between gamepad and mouse mode.. and can be found for as little as 16 bux on amazon
Thanks for the input!
Which emulators are working on fire TV stick. GBA is what I'll likely play.
I will mostly be watching WWE and sports(NBA,NFL).
Might get the $20 a month Sling TV. Which has TNT and ESPN for games.
Just need a reliable way to watch at-least wwe programming.
I don't need it live, since I usually record it, then watch it.
Any channels/addons that are specific for wrestling shows?
I found this guide online. It's a step by step guide on how to install Kodi with addons pre-installed. It comes with all the important addons. Takes around 25 minutes to install. Hope it helps. It's compiled in a 400mb rar folder. Feel free to share. Apparently it was on sale somewhere but Kodi is free and no one should pay for this as a service.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/z6o6yxdmlb0tpzg/Amazon Fire TV Kodi Setup.rar?dl=0
Also CartoonHd, Showbox and PopcornTime. I personally hate kodi but people seem to love it. I use these apps for my content, plus amazon prime, Netflix, hulu and xfinity.

Sideloaded android Xfinity app. You got to have a subscription to xfinity or know somebody that has it
Hi all
What is auto mode on genesis? I've got to manually update genesis folders for new tv episodes to show. How can I change this?
Thanks
i still seem to have to manually update my library as well.. auto mode is in genesis >tools > General i think (im at work)... it does not auto-update the library , what it does it remove the source selection screen and instead plays you whichever stream works.... when youdo this and map the genesis library to your xbmc library, this makes all your streams appear to work as if they were local content...
in genesis >tools. look which folders genesis is using for TV and movies. and write them down.. then in XBMC go to video >add folder.. and type those folders in word for word. one for movies, one for tv. and set up your scrapers accordingly.
Ah ok thanks for that.
Does anyone know how we can get the genesis folders to update automatically

[Q] Just got the ATV fire this morning ....

and I have now installed Kodi on there. What it is I would like though is to revamp the homescreen with a few apps I would like, Western Digital MyCloud plus the 'must have app's' . When I connected the box initially the software was updated so I don't know if that means I ruined any possibility of getting the full potential from the device as I read from several sites yesterday that Amazon have included an update that will brick these boxes if they have been rooted. Can these box still be rooted 'SAFELY' when they've been updated?
I installed Western Digital and also another app but I ended up removing both as it seemed I either needed to have a touch screen device or a mouse, is there a way to use your phone for this or the remote for that matter to control apps?
Yes there is an app called remote mouse which works with the FTV (http://www.amazon.com/Remote-Mouse-for-Fire-TV/dp/B00S4MU62I/?tag=aftvn-20). Also, I would suggest using FiredTV launcher so you can have your apps on your (alternative) homescreen. This may not suit if you are an Amazon Prime customer and like to have their content on your homescreen too.
Just for a moment a sense of relief and excitement came over me when you mentioned I could use my phone, then upon following and reading the link it would seem I need an Android phone....alas I have a iPhone 6+, I'm I buggered before Ive even began
I see that there is a Logitech K400r Wireless Touch Keyboard which is meant to work well with the AFTV, but to be fair I want less clutter around me so really want to squeeze every bit of potential from the AFTV and my phone in this particular instant.
I've installed FiredTV Launcher which works well but is there a way to have it so it's the default home screen without having to root the device?

Yes, there's a setting you have to change in FiredTV launcher which enables/disables home button detection. Also, I would suggest using Llama to link an app you don't or won't use on your home screen to launch FiredTV launcher if the "proper" home screen launches. That's what I've done.
Here's a guide from another post (thanks to original poster for this):

That was great m8, I've now got FireTV to launch on bootup using AFTV Launcher Helper which works great for other applications also like Kodi. I haven't worked out how to disable home button detection as yet though.
So are you aware of any app for IOS that will allow to navigation on the amazon tv like a keyboard & mouse? I've got Amazon Fire TV remote on my iPhone but that does not really work with mouse control so there are app which I would like but unable to control correctly.

Practically everything you could want to know about the FireTV can be found at:
aftvnews com
Personally I had some inconsistent performance with decoding x264, DTS, and other odd issues (such as connecting to an NFS share via ethernet) with my FireTV; I returned it and purchased an Chromebox instead. and installed OpenELEC on it... it's been on for months, and have only had to reset after updates; -couldn't be happier! If you plan to use this device primarily for Kodi, I would recommend looking into using a Chromebox.

The author just recently released an iOS version of the app with the same name in the App Store. I have it loaded on my iPhone 6 and it works great. You will need to sideload the android server portion on the Fire TV for your iPhone to be able to control the Fire TV.

Indeed. Chromebox/openELEC is the best. Gigabit ethernet, HD audio. I happily use my FTV for Netflix, and Amazon Prime Videos and Music.
you should pick up the FAVI FE02RF-BL Mini 2.4GHz Wireless PC / Tablet Keyboard/Touchpad. It comes with a USB dongle you plug in the AFTV, and it works without having to pair it. Just turn it on, and you're good to go. It has a backlit keyboard, and a working touchpad. It also has a working Home button, and menu button.

How to best send youtube videos from multiple smartphones to fire tv?

Hi,
I'm having a FireTV1. My main goal is to install something with that multiple smartphones can be used to control youtube streaming on the firetv.
Important is that it should work without having to login to a youtube account on the firetv. Because eg my wife and me having different youtube accounts, both active on the smartphone.
As both of us should be able to stream youtube content to firetv directly, it would be bad if the firetv has to be logged in to one of the accounts. As in this case only one of our smartphones could take control of the firetv.
If there is some app, but that requires installing custom systems like kodi, that would be fine.
I'm a bit lost in the possibilities and would be happy for any advise how to achieve that.
Thanks!

Your first issue is there is no YouTube app for FireTV. You can thank the Amazon vs Google war for that. You can only screen mirror Amazon devices to Fire TV devices.
Secondly, what you’re describing would function best using a Google Chromecast, that way anyone on your WiFi, can cast YouTube and many other apps, from their phone to the Chromecast device.
Ok I see. Though our primary use is amazon prime video. So I hoped for having just one player...
So there is no way throwing videos on firetv in any case?
(I'd like to avoid screen mirroring. I tried that multiple times without satisfying results).

You can have just one player, but the Fire tv devices are cheaply made. I’ve not had great success with them.
Now I’m using Roku, which still will let me do Amazon video. Not sure on screen mirroring but it does have a YouTube app. I’ll have to check if it will support multiple accounts in the app.
Without doing mirroring, I’m not sure what you mean by “throwing” videos on the screen.
You can cast YouTube to the fire stick pretty easily. I followed this guide to set it up. https://youtu.be/Fpjaqw7CAMg
@Jeffro2700 great, thanks! that worked.
so the only tradeoff is that I first have to start the youtube firefox/silk browser page before I can send videos from my phone to firetv, correct?
If you're a Kodi user with an Android phone, I highly recommend installing the youtube addon for kodi, and installing the yatse remote for kodi app. Once you've done that you can use Share > Play on Media Server (an option enabled with a Yatse installation), and it will cast it to the Kodi system the yatse app is currently controlling. Those are the broad strokes. If you want more info, like how to enable youtube videos > 720P/30 in Kodi, let me know.
Alternatively, you could try sideloading the Smart YouTube TV app from here: https://smartyoutubetv.github.io

Skip Amazon account login on Fire TV Stick?

I had read on XDA that you could bypass logging into an Amazon account on a Fire TV Stick by using the remote app and pressing the gear icon on your phone, which would kick the stick directly into the settings menu; the Stick would essentially be just an Android set-top box at that point, which is my goal. But it seems like a recent firmware patched this, as trying to press the gear in the app just makes the TV screen flicker for a minute, then continue to prompt you to log in. Is there a way around this on newer firmwares that anyone has found? I'm just trying to use the Stick locally to do things like stream my Steam games over the same network, and if the Stick is anything like the Fire HD tablets, not associating an Amazon account with it would make it run a ton better. I also just like using things without having to rely on accounts whenever I can, and the Stick seems way more convenient than other Android boxes, so it would be great to be able to do that here. Thanks in advance for any insight!

Skipping the login/setup wouldn't make the stick to an android tv. As you have a FireTV you get FireOS, without playstore/services and other common androidtv things.
If you have the second gen stick named 'tank' you can root the device and get the possibility to install playstore/services, other androidtv launchers, debloating stock apps...
Edit: since yesterday, there is also a lineage rom for tank, link
