Duplicate contacts because Whatsapp!! - Lenovo P2 Questions & Answers

For some strange reason I still haven't figured out, all my contacts are double entries in the stock "Contacts" or "Dialer" app. One of the 2 entries is the normal one, and the other consist only for whatsapp. I don't understand why it's seperate on this phone. Never had this problem before.
How can I fix this? I know there's an option to hide the Whatsapp numbers (unchecked in "what to show" option in Dialer/Contacts), but that will take also the conveniance of quickly selecting someone out of contacts to call or message via whatsapp.

This is how i do it... go to Contacts and go to the Whatsapp contact, you have to press the edit icon, and it asks you to join the number.. after that it says it's joined, then you see it's one Contact only.

Your contacts library is sync to Gmail or reside in phone storage or saved in SIM card?

I have noticed exactly the same issue.
All my contacts are in Gmail.

You can merge duplicate contacts in contacts settings.

We can always display Gmail contacts only. Goto:
Contacts > three-dots icon > Contacts to display > Select Gmail account.

Yes, but the only downside is that if you search a contact, all copies (double, triple, ...) Are shown again.:cyclops:

Sense contact + Facebook

Hi everyone,
I've just bought this new Desire phone.
I need some explanation about how the contacts are working:
I linked the phone number of my sister with facebook and now, in the contact folder, I see her number twice.. 1 from google account, 1 from facebook? Is there a way to avoid this?
I also tried to excanghe (with bump) our contacts (from Legend to Desire) and now in the contact folder i see this note: "added by bump on 08/05/2010 etc." 3 times!!! And I cant find how to delete these notes.. anywhere!
Tried also to delete the contact, and re-add it but at the time i sync with google, notes comes back again!
This is strange... anyone can help me about that?
Bye bye and tnx in advance.
For your first problem, you can merge the two contacts by selecting the first contact, clicking on the top right link icon, and choosing the second contact.
I don't understand your second problem so cannot help.

do you know how I can keep Desire contact pictures updated via facebook?
To OP, you can manage your contacts on your computer by going to google.com/contacts - organize them, merge them, etc, and then they'll sync to the phone.
To JuSteR, if you enable Facebook sync, their Sense contact pictures should automatically be updated with their FB profile picture.
Facebook sync is enabled. It updates status, news, messages but contact piuctures

Contacts are merged.. But still shows the same number twice. The copy-number disappears only if I unlink the facebook profile from the contact page
(note: the facebook profile does not have a phone number).

The Bump(tm) application from market, added to the contact a note (actually 3 notes) but if I try to modify the contact I don't find any note where are them? (see images for a better explanation)
Tnx all for help!

That's a bug. The contact pictures will not be updated automatically. You have to go to setting option, sign out then sign in facebook sense again to make the contact pictures updated.
tnx for the advise!
Forced to use FB picture
I actually has the opposite problem, I managed to sync Facebook contacts with my Google contacts on my Desire.
But now I'm forced to use Facebook contact picture on contacts that linked to their Facebook accounts, even if I select one of the contacts to use it's Google picture, it stays until the next sync, right after that it pops back to its Facebook picture.
Anyone knows how to fix it?
Thanks in advance.
To hide contacts from unwanted accouts(google), you go to
People -> press meni button -> View
and select witch accouts will be visible.

I do not have so sign out of my facebook account. My contact pictures (all linked to FB) are updated each time I go online, sometimes, here you may be correct, it takes time and not all are updated.
if you find your FB contact pics are not updating.

> back out of contacts

Any ideas regarding forced FB contact pictures issue I noticed above?

Multiples in contacts

We have 3 Evo's in my house and all 3 of us have the same problem - Multiples in the contact list.
Any idea how to cure or prevent this?
On my phone - the contacts are only supplied by google when I sign into my account. I do not import any contacts or have them coming from any other sources.
Thanks, Jack

While your contact list is open, hit "Menu", then "View", and make sure everything is unchecked except for "Google Contacts", then hit "Done". If that doesn't work, go to "Menu" from the home screen", hit "Applications", then "Manage Applications", then "All", scroll down to "Contacts Storage" and hit "Clear Data". Then sync your Gmail account again. This is what I have to do with my calendar sometimes when events show up twice. Let me know if it works for you.......
I know you said you were not getting contacts from any other source, but if you have signed into htc facebook that will try to find matches. If you go into the contact do you have an option to link that contact?

Yes and I'm faa, iliar with the facebook connections. This goes much deeper than that. I'm talking 15 or so of the same person in the contacts list.
Part of it might have been from My Lookout, but I haven't even been using that for quite a while.

Thank You very much for your help. I have done what you suggested - but I know that won't fix my problem as I have wiped my phone dozens of times in the last month playing with new ROMs and I only let google sync my contacts upon a fresh install of a rom. So I know this won't fix my problem. Thank You very much for taking the time to respond though. I really do appreciate it.
Jack
I know this sounds dumb, but did you check your Google contacts? Like you I played with roms a lot and I take off auto sync immediately. But sometimes before you can change those settings, the contacts will sync BACK to Google; duplicated contacts and all.
If you find that's the case, you can merge duplicate contacts when managing your contacts on your desktop using Gmail.
At one point, it fudged all of my groups, duplicated and even removed contacts. Luckily I have a backup file on my sdcard and pc that I was able to use.

Again - I really appreciate the help.
I have done the merge duplicates in gmail on the computer. I just installed a fresh rom and let it download my contacts from google only, yet I have multiples of almost all of my contacts. It has gotten better than it used to be somehow. In a quick glance I only noticed no more than 5 of a single contact. I also noticed that the multiples appear to be from accounts that have more than one phone number in them. Like if I have a home phone, a cell phone, a fax phone and an alternate - I will end up with 4 different contacts for that person.
When on ur phone and in contacts scroll over look at links to contact. There is a place that looks like a link to a chain that us either whole or broken. If connected it will link all the contacts with same name and vice versa for the unlinked. Hope that helps. That's for sense roms. If aosp rom they should consolidate on there own with use from what I've seen

[Q] Removing facebook contacts from phonebook

How do you remove your Facebook contacts from your phonebook?
It's driving me nuts!
Hit Contacts, and go to Display Options. I'd say either check "Only contacts with phones" or go down and disable the facebook contacts all together.
Alternatively you can hit the menu button the facebook app, and change the Sync setting to "Remove Facebook data".
Hope that helps!
did it both ways and they are all still there.
ok, managed to delete facebook contacts but now i have duplicate names/numbers, 1 from the sim and 1 from the phone
sorted, thanks

[Q] Google lost contacts

Every now and then my contacts will be lost and in setting > Google > Sync Contacts will say it synced but all my contacts are gone. Some times I can just re sync and it works but other times it doesn't. Is there a way for this to not happen?
Or sometimes it will say Sync Contacts has an error and will not sync to Google and I'll have different contacts on my phone and on Google contacts

make sure when you save a new contact that the name is saved as a gmail contact and not on your phone. there are actually two contact "books" on you phone, the internal phone contacts and the gmail contacts.

Yeah that is not it. I always save new contacts under gmail not phone. I think its something to do with syncing with google

Personally never had that issue. Occasionally sync goes down for a minute, then comes back up. If you are like me and keep sync off and changes roms, if you added a contact and didn't sync, you could miss a few that were added.
So i'd jut double check to be safe.

What ROM are you using? Stock, Stock rooted, TW-based, AOSP (4.1.2, 4.2.1, or 4.2.2)? I've ran all of these (and then some) and haven't run into anything like this, but if it's ROM-specific, knowing what you're running will help narrow it down.
Cheers!

Sometimes my phone log just shows numbers and when I check my contact list it's empty.
Reboot phone and they are all back. My contacts are on Google but was wondering if there is a way to store them on the phone also.
Some way to download to a file on the phone?

Go to the contacts app, press menu > export
Then select the account and it'll export to your scarf as a CSV file
There are also apps that let you import/export your contacts as an XML file

Contacts full of redundant addresses

I synced my contacts from an Exchange account (365), but along with all my actual contacts in Outlook it's synced the address of just about everyone I've ever emailed or received an email from.
How the hell is this happening?
It's definitely syncing ONLY Contacts from the Exchange account.
Anyone else get this problem?
This happens to me sometimes.. go to contacts>three dots on top right> contacts settings>Contacts to display>Customize.

Thanks uly, I have tried that but it doesn't work. The only thing that is half-decent is to show only those with a phone number.

Nope, they're not. I start from nothing (none of the options checked) and Contacts shows nothing. Select my Exchange account under Customize, and it all comes back, all that crap.
Weird.
Had the exact same problem on 2 G4's (Long story...boughy first G4,thought it was too big, swapped for S6 Edge, battery sacked, back to 2nd G4).
I couldn't find any way around it. When I had a G2 and Xperia Z3, it would only sync actual contacts I had in Office365. But for some reason the G4, in your words, captures every contact I've ever sent an email to. Additionally, the native contact list, when synced with Honda's 2015 HFL system via Bluetooth, lists contacts by company name and not last name...no way to change this on the car or the phone...truat me, spent 2 hours trying.
My solution...downloaded Nine and now use it for email and contacts, but still use native for calendar. It only syncs actual contacts found in my Office365 contact list. Nine's calendar doesn't have the ability to check free/busy in corporate server, but native calendar does. Additionally, Nine also syncs seamlessly with my car, listing contacts by First Name, Last Name.
I'm happy with this solution and it wasn't all that hard to set up.
i was insanely annoyed by this as well. here's how i fixed it:
contacts > . . . > contact settings > contacts to display > customize > unselect Other Contacts.
these are the contacts that Gmail automatically creates when you email a person one or two times. i would assume doing this for exchange would also remove the frequently contacted contacts that are auto created. i had over 1000 contacts showing before this change. after? ~250

I guess you mean "Other Contacts" under the Google account? That's unchecked as well. EVERYTHING is unchecked, literally, except Contacts under my ActiveSync account. I cleared the Contacts Storage as well and they all came back. Feckin annoying.
TX - Thanks for the suggestion. I'm trying it out now, but it's a bit sh1t having to spend £6.50 cos LG can't get it right.
No worries!
The strange part to me is that LG had it right with the G2, but clearly changed something with the G4.

One other thing I should have mentioned...disassociate your Office365 Exchange sync, power cycle the phone (this clears all the contacts), then install Nine.
