From my understanding formatting the /system partition through CWM will remove the android OS completely from your device and you would have to flash a new one to replace it. Found the following information on the below website:
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile...plained-boot-system-recovery-data-cache-misc/
/system
This partition basically contains the entire operating system, other than the kernel and the ramdisk. This includes the Android user interface as well as all the system applications that come pre-installed on the device. Wiping this partition will remove Android from the device without rendering it unbootable, and you will still be able to put the phone into recovery or bootloader mode to install a new ROM.
My question is, if I format the /system partition, does it remove all my currently saved pictures and videos on my internal memory? When I install a new ROM I typically wipe data /factory reset, then perform TDJs super wipe before installing the new ROM.
However, the instructions for installing the newest CM10 ROM also says to wipe /system partition. I know this will remove the OS, but will this also remove my pics and videos or should I back them up first before performing this step? Thanks.

Now i could be wrong as i am no Dev by any means but i do not think it will wipe your emmc as well. Reason i think it will be fine if you wipe /system is if you go in with root explorer and go to your /system folder your emmc is not located there so therefore if you were to wipe your /system patition it sould leave the emmc partition in tact.
But as always i would backup your emmc to your pc and give it a try. Hope this helps :good:

I was thinking the same thing as well but just had to ask because I have never processed the format /system action before. I am currently running a TW ROM ATM and looking through ES File Explorer my sdcard (which is the same as emmc on AOSP ROMs) isn't located located in the /system folder either.
Thanks for your reply, I tried to give you a thanks but I have reached my limit today

I'm no Dev either, but your right. Formatting system will not touch your emmc or sd cards. If you format system when flashing a new nightly (which I do every 3rd flash), you won't lose any user data at all. Only ROM and system apps, this is why you need to reflash Gapps as well if you format system.
When you use TDJ's wipe script, it formats everything (including system) except emmc and external sd cards.

Thanks so much, I run TDJ's wipe script with each install of a new ROM and completely didn't realize that is also wipes the /system partition. I just re-read his Superwipe thread and right in the OP it says
"This exceeds anything that CWM is capable of from the menu options. This will format and erase EVERYTHING on your /system, /data, /cache partions with EXT4 file system. It WILL NOT wipe SD CARD or EMMC... After it is complete with format and e****, it will align all disks partitions properly."
I was up extra early this morning, forgive me, I need to learn how to read better as well
Thanks again.
Remember guys, wiping doesn't wipe everything. However, not wiping everything can bring its own issues.
Sorry for bumping up an old thread but it was very relevant to this topic. If I wipe the system before flashing a new ROM will my apps remain intact with their data? I know system apps will be gone but they will come back anyway so it doesn't matter.

Yes, they will stay intact with a /system wipe. However, with a factory reset or /data wipe, your apps will be gone.

Ok, here is the problem, i woke up today, my phone battery was empty, i connected the phone battery was loading, but i couldn't get to the system, after kernel load it stops, like there was no system installed. Everything worked fine day before,my configuration was: Doomkernel and Existenz_2.0.5 ROM.
So, i got to recovery (recovery works,CWM), and there i saw "can't mount cache" error. I got into shell with adb (this works too), and there is no way i can mount any system partition (/system, /cache, /data), what's more important /sdcard does not mount either. So, i'm in recovery, can't install or restore from sdcard, cause /sdcard does not mount.
I'v tried sideload, no go.
I've tried fastboot flash new kernel, and here's interesing thing, fastboot reported that flashing was ok, but i still have Doomkernel (i was trying to flash 6.0-TUX-Core-HD kernel. So seems like fastboot did not write anything at all.
I've tried flashtool with stock tft. It breaks with "final verification error", when i turn "final verification off" it goes all the way, says everything is installed, but when i restarted, still only Doomkernel.
Any ideas ? I take any advice.
Maybe you have already tried it, but format your phone's data, THEN the cache, and finally the internal storage (SD card). In XS's CWM, there's a bug, which causes sometimes an unformatable and unusable cache parition. But this method can be help on this. Maybe this problem causes those unformatable partitions.

Thank you for your reply. Haven't tried that but i have now and, unfortunately, no go. With /data and /cache seems like format was success but it didn't ( still can't Mount) and with /sdcard format fails (error mounting /sdcard).
Maybe my sdcard really died ?

Well, I don't think so. The "SD Card" is a part of the memory chip, which includes the system, the data and the cache partitions too. Because you cannot copy anything now to the internal storage, try to install a ROM from ADB Sideload if you can. Once it done, your phone can be boot maybe again. If it happens, try to format the internal storage by the Android. If it fails, connect the phone to your computer, and try to format with Windows or (it can be better) Linux to fat32 filesystem.

Thank you for your ideas. Thing is, all i can start is cwm recovery. As i wrote, i can't install anything with sideload. And no partition is working. When i start parted /dev/block/mmcblk and try to list partitions, i get unrecognized disk label error, when i try to manually set disk label to msdos, there's I/O Error.
And i can't format sdcard, because when in recovery, phone is not detected by Linux nor Windows. But i tried formatting partitions internally, with mke2fs, and with fastboot command. No go.
I know that /sdcard is just a partition, but what i meant was that probably my phone memory chip died, like hardware died. but i'm still looking for new ideas i want to try everything before giving up.

Then maybe it's a HW error really. But maybe just the partition table is corrupted. At this point, I don't know. I have only one suggestion left: Take the phone to the nearest SONY Center or GSM shop/service to investigation. But I think they will say you'll need to replace the phone's motherboard. Anyway, it's an too expensive solution I think, because this phone is a "retired" modell without any update, but with a "blacksheep (Snapdragon S3) SoC.
Hi,
I have installed twrp 3.1..1 recovery. Wanted to update android version to 7 but when I did the advance format from the twrp recovery, its start giving error says unable to mount /data and /system. When I install the rom zip file, at the end it is giving error says Unable to mount /data and /system (invalid argument).
I did googling and tried to find the solution, but problem persist.
Is there any solution and suggestion to get it solved.
Thanks
You need to wipe your internal with ext-4 then the problem is solved

Open recovery (twrp) go into WIPE>FORMAT DATA then type 'YES' to confirm. This will wipe all your data including media such as photos videos music, etc so make sure you have a backup of all your stuff before proceeding. The recovery will then restart. This fixed it for me and is most reliable.
.
.
If this doesn't help then another method is- Wipe>>advanced wipe>> select data and system and select REPAIR OR CHANGE FILE SYSTEM. In there select ext-4 and then repair. Once the process is done your recovery will be working.

Thank You,
But I did not find the option to choose ext-4 while Repairing or changing the file system.
Any alternate method would appreciated.

I have watched a lot of tutorials but nothing is working please someone help
I made a video of the problem and what I tried. Can anyone understand what happened
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VaN-y-Worlg
Update: In Data i Changed the file system and went back to original. Didn't work.
I even wiped system. But i guess the only problem is to fix the "data". Since it shows 0 Mb size. But i can't find any way or guide. The ones i did find are too advanced and use cmd commands and toolkits which i don't think an inexperienced user like me should be following.
Some background information: i attempted to install Open gApps and enable Camera2 API. I Entered "read only" mode.
The adb shell commands for enabling it wasn't working (some "proprietary" something shown )
So I tried another method. I downloaded the latest Magisk and flashed it. Then i tried gApps. I don't remember when i started to think what went wrong but yeah..
I found this and I think it may be related.
But I don't understand it properly.
And its and Old post for some other Recovery

Why did you wipe internal storage? And what are you trying to mount. If you are trying to install a new rom all you need to wipe is cache, dalvik, system and data. Wiping internal storage removes everything from the internal SD card and if you do this then you have no OS.

At this point i can't care less about the data in internal storage. I just need to flash the official MIUI ROM back, enable Camera2 API and live in peace. At this moment I'm halfway through downloading the ROM but I'm not sure if i can flash it due to the Mount Issue of internal storage. I plan on transferring it to my micro SD card and flashing it from there to System Image. Will it work? And Internal Storage formatting failed in case you didn't notice. Practically nothing worked except the file system change of "data". And even that didn't fix the unable to Mount issue.

Hello,
I get Xiaomi mix 2s global with:
-Unblocked bootloader
-Installed OrangeFox Recovery
-Installed some Android 10 pixel experience rom
I wanted back to original global rom with stock recovery and reblock bootloader, so i download Global Stable ROM V11.0.5.0.QDGMIXM, put to internal storage and install from OrangeFox.
And now, when I turn on the smartphone, it’s starts, restart and go again to OrangeFox recovery.
In log I have: “Android Rescue Party trigger! Wipe data and caches and/or clean-flash you ROM!"
OrangeFox disables forced encryption by default, and now I need to enabled encryption? How to do it?
So, How to fix it?
I want to back to original global rom with stock recovery and reblock bootloader, bu first I have t turn on system.
Thanks
EDIT:
After installatin PixelExperience_polaris-10.0-20200528-1111-OFFICIAL from OrangeFox, smartphone starts normally, now I want to back to stock rom, recovery and reblock bootloader.
If your bootloader unlocked try formatting your data in orange fox recovery and reboot and see if that fixes it. Just remember formatting data partition wipes everything on your device so anything you want to save be sure and transfer over to your PC first.
doesntwork

I got the same error - Android Rescue Party trigger..." and bootlop.
EDIT:
But I wiped:
Dalvik / ART Cache
Cache
System
Data
Didn't wipe: Internal storage and Vendor.
After that, i installed Global stable V11.0.5.0.QDGMIXM and get the same error, but some settings have been saved - for example my pattern for unlocking.
EDIT:
I did: wipe all, reboot to twrp, flash ROM, and when I try format data, I get error:
Formatting Data using mke2fs...
mke2fs -t ext4 b...
Proces ebded with ERROR: 1
Unable to wipe Data.
Unable to format to remove encryption.
EDiT3:
Success!
I tried once more, and it's ok.
Solution:
1. Wipe all via recovery
2. reboot to recovery
3. flash rom
4. Format data partition (format, no wipe, if mke2fs doesn't work, try with rm-f)
5. Reboot system.
After that everything is ok, at the end uploading stock recovery via adb went without a any problem.
Thanks!
Just to help many others. The trick here, is to format data, not just wipe data from TWRP. You need to hit format data from the wipe menu and type "yes" to confirm. Some things need to be said in plain English.
