Hi all,
Firstly, I'm new to winmob devices but as a developer I wanted to get my hands on one and start building some apps. I bought an unlocked TP2 and so far I'm really impressed and happy with it.
Now, I've searched the forums and can't find anything that completely addresses a question I have about Data Connection. It's a bit n00b but as I said I'm new to this I've never had a phone that could connect to the internet before.
I have a data plan with my provider, but when I'm at home I have the phone on the wifi. Sometimes I have it on the laptop at work or home (via USB cable).
What I don't quite understand yet is what is the priority for data connection? e.g. if connected via USB it will try to use the internet connection of the pc? if connected via wifi it will use that as preference? When the phone isn't connected to either, obviously it will start eating data from my plan, but I'm not clear on how the phone uses the internet etc. when on wifi or via the USB cable. I assume there's some kind of "preference" order or setting.
Can someone please enlighten me?
Thankyou for your time!
I've not seen any setting, but I believe it is:
USB ActiveSync (First priority)
Wifi
3G data connection
GPRS data connection (Last)
This is my experience anyway - certainly Wifi should be higher priority than any cellular/mobile connection. And I think I noticed that my web browsing was going via USB cable instead of Wifi when that was plugged in.
I agree with the above post, however I have noticed that If I run an app (lets say the YouTube app) with no active wireless or activesync connection it will use 3G or GPRS depending on available service, however If I then turn on Wireless I have to restart the app, it doesn't seen to automaticaly switch over to the new wireless connection which is a shame.

Hello, I have been searching around for a day and a half now to no avail. I figure I will ask here as a last attempt before I go and buy another USB wifi adapter.
I am trying to use my HTC Dash with WM6.5 to tether an available wifi connection over to my Windows 7 PC. Basically trying to use the phone as a wifi adapter. The phone has no cell data service, but can connect to the home wifi network that is here. My Windows 7 PC has no Wifi adapter (I left it behind >.<).
Here is where I am at. The HTC Dash is connected to the Wifi network, and when I try to select a Network in the ICS program, it says there is none available. I have been able to get USB selected in ICS, and the phone connected to the computer. In Windows I see a Windows Mobile Remote Adapter in the Network Connections area when I sync the device in Windows Mobile Center. But no matter what I try, ICS sharing on the phone will not let me select the Wifi connection it has.
Through my searching I have found a lot of information on tethering 2G and 3G internet through USB, and using the phone as a Wifi Hotspot. But those where no help in this.
My friend on a G1 with Andriod can tether Wifi connections to a pc, and I am wondering if Windows Mobile can do the same thing. I can flash my ROM from to 6.0 or 6.1 WM if needed.
Thanks in advance to any advice given, hopefully someone can help me out
UPDATE: Still have no luck. I found a program called ICS Control v.21, but it only works on touchscreen WM phones, not WM standard. Which means a bunch of crashing.
This program would do exactally what I need it to do... just does not support my phone. Well the search continues... looking like I may just have to go buy an USB Wifi adapter soon.
tethering w/wifi
It does work. I'm currently answering this on my 2nd desktop Vista with my S620 via my home wifi network. Waiting for a 25' ethernet connector to hardware to wifi/modem Not quite sure how it is with a wifi adapter but 2 things I do know from experience. You shouldn't need an adapter.
1st: you can't be in Sync Center while trying to tether, at least in my case on a Vista desktop. It won't let you tether while the sync is running (or your already synced).
2nd: (this worked for me) open internet sharing on your Dash/S620, pc connection-usb and be ready to hit connect the 1st couple of seconds after pluging your usb connector into your phone, and give it 10-20 seconds to actually connect. If you wait to long to hit connect, the phone will start syncing with the computer. Won't let you tether.
RE-read post, missed thar "WinMo" remote part. My bad. Don't own Win 7. Don't know what that is.
Question: Is there an active wifi where you are ? From your post it sounds like "yes"
You do not need a wifi adapter. You do need a USB cord.
I tethered with edge for a bit, but then got to thinking. Try Wifi. It worked, but be quick.
Neither one is super fast but Wifi is definitely faster than Edge. Better than not being on the net at all. Occasionally it'll cut out, just unplug usb, get to connect screen, plug in and hit connect. Should be set.
As a side note: I also tried tethering with G1. Xferd pc driver to Vista from G1 but computer says it can't find the driver. Gave up after 2 hours.
G1 tethering works great on XP though.
Hope this helps. Good Luck. Really cool when it works.
Are you using a wifi tether or just usb?
If wifi, what program/version are you using and where did you get it? I got the ICS usb tether working, but my version of wmwifirouter.cab won't even install on the dash. cheers

I'll have to break out the Dash again and let you know. It's been sitting for weeks since I repaired LCD screen and flashed my TMO Wing. Can't seem to stop playing with it.
Give me a little time and I'll get back to you.
You do have a wifi modem, correct ? I was using usb.
Right, just to be clear, my goal is to set up my Dash to receive it's edge data and transmit that out as a wifi signal that my laptop will pick up and connect to the internet. No USB connection. I'm getting an ipad eventually and this is all to avoid that stupid 3g garbage they're hawking.
I tried a program called wmwifirouter.cab but was unsuccessful. An ad-hoc wifi network was created by my phone and my laptop was connected to it but couldn't connect to the internet. And my phone kept crashing.
Any ideas? Thanks

Well, in your case, I won't be any help. What I did was run a 2nd computer off of my Dash with a Wifi Modem.
XP in another room with a wifi modem attached on Comcast, Dash on wifi and usb to Vista computer, since I didn't have a 25ft ethernet cable at the time.
Was running Vista-Dash-wifi modem-XP to comcast so I could run 2nd computer without being hard wired.
I'm familiar with wifirouter cab. It let's you use your phone like a hotspot, correct ?
In all my searches for various things for the phones, I thought I saw a different application that did the same thing. Possibly might even have it. I'll check and upload for ya if I find it. Have hundreds of cabs/zips to search. Let you know.
Possibly google it and you might find it yourself. There's a program called: WalkingHotSpot online for $24.99 if you don't mind spending. Dash isn't listed as a supported windows device but looking at the other phones listed my guess would be it should work. Try their DEMO version, see if it works.
Good Luck.......
2AM and I was just wondering......When you received your phone, you also got a usb cable with it, right ?
Why don't you just usb Dash to laptop and use "internet sharing" ????
My plan is to set this up for an iPad, which doesn't allow internet access over a USB cable, so USB tethering is out, has to be wifi.

Do you have a home computer ? If so, get yourself a Wifi Modem and set up a home network. $40-60. Although Comcast sold me mine for $20 and I get to keep it. I can get all 5 phones on the internet at the same time, not that I need to. It'll also be so much faster then running thru Edge. Besides the fact video's don't play for crap tethered running through Edge. Just a suggestion.
My opinion stands concerning Apple. Get ready to cough up more fees for internet (ATT). They're doing away with unlimited data. Did you see their prices ?
You'll never catch me with ATT.
I just put WMWifiRouter on my TMO Wing 6.5. let you know how it worked. Setup went fine, so far.
did you try downloading the actual .cab from WMWIFIROUTER.COM it's only a trial for 21 days, the "Free" versions don't work on the dash i've tried many of them.
once you install and get it set up be sure to write down the Access ID and Password it gives you so you can connect to the WiFi signal beaming from your phone from your PC. It works for me to tether a WiFi connection from my Dash to PC though I prefer the more stable Internet Sharing USB to PC and I have an Unlimited Data Plan.
WMWIFIROUTER also lets you tether a connection from your phone via bbluetooth.
I use WMWiFiRouter and its a life saver. It lets you pretty much tether any connection to any other.
Just yesterday I was at a meeting in a resturant with some clients and used it to hook my netbook to the internet and used bluetooth as the connection to the phone. Yes, Internet Sharing can do that, but it has alot more it can do too.
You can use Bluetooth, USB (it shows up as a USB modem), or even set it up as a WiFi Router.
Very cool program and it works perfectly on the Dash. I love it.
I never tried the trial version. A friend of mine showed it to me, so I just bought it. It's under $20. Well worth it if you run into that situation often.
I have a question regarding tethering via wifi on my T989D.
I am using the Juggernaut v5.0 on my Telus T989D. It has wifi-sharing app built in. When I use this application to share my mobile internet with my PC, I get two different ip addresses. For example, use my PC's browser, I find my PC's ip address is 123.123.123.57, however my phone's IP address is 123.123.123.101. So my phone and my pc have different ip addresses.
Strange enough, my Samsung Vibrant (T959 from TMobile), is different. I use wifi tethering for root user app, and I find my PC and my phone (T959) share the same ip address.
Why they are different on my T989D?
The problem I am having right now is, tethering via T989D's built-in function is slow. Sometimes connection drops. However the tethering via my T959 is very reliable and fast.
Is there a way to disable built-in tethering on T989D and use the tethering for root user app on my T989D? I have tried to freeze the tether manager, but tethering for root user still has error in log and I cannot connect to it at all.
Please help, I want to fix my tethering problem with T989D.
thanks
think about it...
when you are WiFi tethering, your phone is acting as the router, and it provides its own IP to you
you don't get the Mobilicity IP on your laptop or whatever it's hooking up to your phone on WiFi
Sorry I don't get it.
Why my T989D and T959 act differently?
Basically there are two ways of tethering your phone to your PC, (to allow the PC to access the internet through your phone's data connection). The first way is connect PC to the phone, and then to configure your PC to see the phone as the network adapter. This is the method used when you configure USB tethering and you connect the PC to the phone with a USB cable. In that case there will only be 1 IP address assigned, because the PC is using the phone as the network adapter. (Imagine the phone is just an ethernet adapter for the PC)
The second way is to connect your phone to your PC and then to configure the PC to access the phone as if it were a Wireless Access Point (WAP). This is the method used when you use Wi-Fi sharing, (called Portable Hotspot). It's called sharing because the phone can share access to its data connection through its Wi-Fi hardware, for up to 8 different PCs simultaneously. In order to do this the phone has to route data requests correctly between the connected computers. It does this by assigning itself 1 IP address, and then assigning each PC that's connected to it, a different IP address. This is similar to setting up a wireless router at home to share a single internet connection between multiple PCs.
Usually USB tethering results in 1 IP address for both phone (network adapter) and PC, and Wi-Fi sharing/tethering results in 1 IP address for the phone and another IP address for each connected PC. However, I suppose it's possible to use different Wi-Fi tethering software that connects the PC to the phone via Wi-Fi, using only 1 IP address for both phone and PC, like the USB tether method. This would mean you couldn't share the connection, but it may work faster, since the phone wouldn't need to do any routing.
If the android-wifi-tether app is what you refer to as "wifi tethering for root user app", it's worth it to see if it works on the T989. (I'd be curious if it works too). However, if you're using Juggernaut 5.0, you should be able to install android-wifi-tether, and it should work. You shouldn't actually have a Tethering manager app in your list of apps, I don't and I'm using 5.0. If you do, and freezing Tethering manager doesn't allow this app to work, then I would try freezing both the Wi-Fi sharing app and the Wi-Fi sharing manager app as well. If it still doesn't work I'd be tempted to reflash the Juggernaut 5.0 ROM, and then install the android-wifi-tether app again, and see if it works.
Good Luck..
Thanks Jasnn, this really helped and I am now clear.
Yes, the application I am referring to was android-wifi-tether. It works flawlessly
on T959D. it is very slow on my T989D with Juggernaut 5.0/Telus modem.
If I reboot the phone and start tethering using android-wifi-tether, the application starts, but there is one error in log:
Setting ad-hoc mode: failed.
IP address are still different. My pc and phone has two different ipaddress.
I'd like to have the same ipaddress, also one thing bugs me is, the internet connection is not stable, the internet goes on and off. Lots of t989/D users have experienced this problem, there is no cure yet.
thanks

Hi guys,
I am currently online with my computer wich has a 3G Stick/Modem attached to it. (= No WiFi router around I could use)
What I want to do is to somehow connect my DHD to the computer so I could access the internet via the 3G Stick from my phone while the modem is still pluged in to the computer.
I tried creating an Ad-Hoc network but for some reason, my phone wont connect to it, its always stuck on "Authentication" or "Retrieving IP-Adress".
Is there a way I could manage the whole thing by connecting the Phone via a USB-Cable?
When you plug phone into pc there should be an internet pass through option. I know the inspire can do it and I'm pretty sure the dhd is the same.
i dont know what os you have but i can create a wifi network using my macs ethernet port and connect to it. i know this can be done on linux too
Ad hoc network is probably not authenticating because the phone is not being assigned an ip address... (not a networking expert... just telling you what ive noticed with most devices) creating a network bridge between your usb 3g dongle and your wifi might help... not a surefire thing but its worth a shot.
.. if u are using a stock rom or one with sense then theres the internet pass through option which requires htc sync.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using xda app-developers app
Is there a way to use the One X as a router?
One X connected to internet via Internet Pass-Through and the open Hotspot (without 3G connection).
Why I want this?
I have a PC with wired connection and no Wi-Fi (router is dead somehow) and untill I'll have another router I only have one outcoming internet connection and three computers...
two words wifi hotspot ^^
LoL I'm not dumb...
It doesnt work, thats why I have posted that question...
I think there is an option for USB pass through on CM. Not so sure about on a Sense based rom, though?
Just connect USB and where it say charge only or mass storage there's a option for internet pass through you carnt use WiFi and WiFi hotspot at the same time
Skydragon team
Again, I'm asking if its possible to use internet pass through and then transmit it via Hotspot.
Yes you can.
With the default Hotspot and HTC's internet pass through?
Tried twice and it didn't work.
Like I said you can do it with USB but not hotspot if you use hotspot it will use 3g and you carnt connect to WiFi using WiFi hotspot but if you connect USB there's a option to use internet pass through wich will allow you to use you phone like a WiFi dongul
Skydragon team
OK I understand that is isn't possible as none of you got the idea of what I'm saying xD
Thanks for the comments and the will to help anyway, guess I should just buy a router...
*Mods you can lock now*
Sorry, I'm mistaken. What DOES work is turning WiFi on the phone, then connecting the phone in Tether mode. Wouldn't really help you though cos it's the opposite of what you need >.<
