[Q] GPS reset? My GPS is loosing signal alot now - Sprint Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My GPS looses signal alot of the time anymores.
It started happening a few months ago.
Is there a GPS reset somewhere in the settings?
My note 4 is on DPD1.
And it does not update itself anymore, nor can I update it manually.
Since I enabled the wifi hotspot, I believe.
Can any-1 suggest a GPS perk-up so it will act as before?
Thanks alot.

I noticed that this started when I upgraded to the latest version of Google Maps. I went into the app settings and uninstall the latest version. And it reverted back to the original version on the original ROM. The GPS is working great again. But now I don't get to use the offline maps as my version does not have that like the latest version did.

I use Waze and this happens, so I don't see how this is related to Maps.

i just replied to a thread about this. my phone just absolutely cannot lock onto or find gps sats now.
dunno if its the custom rom, google maps, the radio being corrupt, kernel, or whatever.. its bugging me becuase im always out using my maps.

I had no GPS in till I uninstalled Magisk.

i think my gps is toasted. odin flashed the newest dqf1 rom, then updated to dqg1
gps cant get a lock, cant find sats, got worse. using google maps.
any ideas?

If you'll goto Google Play and view Google Maps app description, you'll see some linked suggestions to improve location.
It's the first time I've seen the suggestion and directions to calibrate the compass. Mine had been wide and possibly pointing wrong direction but the calibration actually seems to work as described in the animation.

I haven't been having GPS signal lost issues but directions and redirects could be more accurate and timely to be less confusing. I'm testing the Google Maps beta app now.

trip to st louis was frustrating, gps signal in and out and google maps was just not accurate or timely.
my gals iphone however was spot on.
starting to wonder if the qualcomm gps chip is starting to show its age or firmware damage. the calibration helps for a moment, then gps is lost again.

Long trip last Tuesday with Google Maps beta was without issue. I did notice the wide compass indication when on data; I tried the calibration again in my driveway but it stayed wide. My GPS usually is spotty near home. Navigated fine without GPS lost warnings.
Just as I started navigating, app said it would download maps along my route to improve navigation. I took the phone back in the house to sync that data first. Not a chance Sprint data would be any help here. Minor inconvenience; I had searched the location a day prior to check the estimated time of arrival but didn't get that prompt to download maps.
The beta app has updated twice since then. I'll test again on a return trip. Get the feeling Maps has always been beta.
I'm on UN7 custom ROM. I followed the prerequisites of that ROM on install; PJ1 stock tar and verifications included GPS lock prior to ROM flash (made a TWRP backup). When the modset for that ROM was released, I eventually started over with my PJ1 stock tar TWRP backup, flashed UN7 ROM and then flashed modset.

The problem is the contacts on your phones mobo have become compressed and or oxidized. . You need to dissasemble the phone. Remove all screws and seperate the phone from the screen to get to the back of the mobo...
IMPORTANT... When you pry the case from the screen you need a heat source hair dryer or heat gun to soften the adhesive holding the frame to the screen. .. You will need a plastic tool or guitar pick to pry it apart.... Again it is important you use a heat source to soften the adhesive or you will break the digitizer and or screen. .. Once you have the case separated from the screen and motherboard the contacts will be on the upper right of the motherboard. .. Gently pry them up so they make better contact to the antenna in the case...

took back cover off, and used a needle to pry up all the metal contacts on the back to touch the cover antenna sticker.
gps hasnt dropped yet, been using all week in the city. i'll see how it goes on the interstate out of town.

GPS Problem

Hi guys,
Trying to figure out if this is just me that has this issue. New nexus as of yesterday on o2. I do have the volume issue for what its worth, but I am getting off topic.
I have been having a problem with the GPS. I have tried it indoors and out. I have restarted the app, cleared cache, re-ticked all the location boxes, and nothing seems to help my get a lock. The closest it comes is about 4700 metres. This is with WiFi turned on as well as an active Sim card in it. My old iPhone without a sim instantly drops the pin on my house. So I guess I am trying to see if others have the issue, and if there is a fix or I have to send it back.
For the record I am pretty new to Android....as in this is my first one, so go gently! Other than this issue I love the phone!
Cheers,
J

That definitely does not seem normal. See if you can replicate the problem in a less built-up area. But at the moment, if I were having the same problem (which I'm not, I get great GPS reception) I would take it back for a replacement.
Hope you get it all sorted.

Well I live in the country side, so that hopefully is not the issue. I turned wifi off and it made zero difference, so it looks like something with the GPS.......
I just tried the GPS app in the market called GPS Test
It says that GPS is on, but it can't find me. Bad sign.
I tried the GPS test app from the market too the other day and it didn't locate any satellites. I think it's a problem with that app itself. No need to panic yet.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
I've been suffering from the same problem. I'm used to the GPS icon on the SGS2 showing me a (blinking) dot in the GPS icon. But now nothing.
GPS test app also shows it's on. I'm going to try the GPS out a bit more, but have the feeling somethings up with the GPS.
Using the Wi-fi it's working 'fine'. But I don't feel like sharing info while using this feature.
The captivate had a very similar problem when it came out. Not sure if it ever got fixed. But ultimately that's why I turned my captivate back in.
If you are in the country with no wifi around then I wouldnt expect wifi location to do you any good. Still though, it should locate much better than what it is. I'm in Afghanistan, in the middle of no where and mine locks while only using GPS to within like 30 meters.
original SGS line of phones were famous for their "awesome GPS"
no, it never got fixed because it was a hardware issue...
I'm having the same problem. I'm constantly unable to find my location using GPS. Wi-Fi and mobile networks work but this surely needs to be fixed.
GPS seemed to work after my little trip outside. Sadly as soon as I got back in, nothing. I'll be able to do some 'proper field testing' tomorrow.

GPS normally does not work well indoors.
I know but because I managed to get a location with the GPS on the SGS2, even if it took a while.
I was hoping for similar results (or better) with the GN.
GPS on my GN isn't working at all. Unless Wi-Fi and mobile network location is ticked, the phone can't find my location with GPS. Argh.
Have you tried any GPS apps to see if it's just bad reception from the satellites? That's one way to find out what's going on with the GPS on the phone.
My GPS locks almost instantly, and this is without a SIM card, and in Manhattan with tall buildings blocking most of the satellites. Much faster than with my N1.
no problems here.fastest phone ever with gps and i got 10 phones around 3 years with the function.
sitting in my room on the couch in the second floor.WiFi of only 2G network
and got within 5 to 7 sec a gps fix about 10 meters.
I reapeat,... in my house!not on the street or on the window!
sitting in front of my tv
never got a phone who can give me a signal in my house
my GPS also seems to work fine but during tracking it always goes off lock and relocks
and it bounces on corners like a gummybear

Anyone in the NYC area have working GPS?

I have been having terrible GPS. It either won't lock in or if it does (on Google Navigation) i get the large blue circle around the nav arrow indicating that it won't lock in. I tried GPS Status and it helps a little but it by no means solved the problem. I also tried the app FASTER LOCK that supposedly helps the GPS lock in faster but it does not work either. I also tried the thread in the DEV section with the flashable zip. All of the above was done on Calkulin's and then after a fresh ODIN to stock rooted EL29 ROM.
After exhausting all these options I actually called SPRINT. They advised me that they are doing some maintenance on the antenna or satellites or some nonsense and say the ETA for the fix is 2/1/12. This service is supposed to be in the BKLYN/Queens and part of Manhattan area. In a nutshell I want to know if any of you NYers have experienced any problems with the GPS working properly. Please let me know because this is driving me F'n nuts and I don't really take Sprints word about these "repairs"

Mine too, but I almost never use GPS. I remember trying a while back and it wouldn't work (I'm not outside right now, so I can't try). I live in Bay Ridge and work in Manhattan and go to college in Staten Island.
I don't trust Sprint about any "upgrades" they claim to be doing. Since last January, they told me they were doing "upgrades" to fix 3G data speeds, and mine are still garbage. Better than they used to be but still garbage.
thanks for the input Fred. This nonsense is really pissing me off! Everything works great on this phone except for this GPS. The funny thing is that I don't use it that often but when I do use it I want and need it to work properly. There is nothing worst than being on the highway relying on Google Nav to get you to your destination and all of a sudden you get a "GPS single lost" notification.
Hopefully this gets straightened out one way or another

So should we stay away from any specific sirial number? because i've tried the flashable zip and i still dont get a GPS lock... (Charlotte NC)

It is indeed with a lot of people. I have the same issue for a long time. I just recently got a new phone via insurance cause I lost my old one. It still has GPS lock issues. I can't say if it is a new model however.
What works for me (TO A POINT) is turning Wifi on for it to narrow down. Its really upsetting because I have my old Evo next to me and it gets GPS locks no problem. It is an issue with the phone.
I know that I have good company in regards to this problem. To illustrate my point I went to a Sprint corporate store in Brooklyn today and asked him about this GPS situation. To be honest he didn't know his ass from his elbow but the only upside was that he has the Epic 4G as his personal phone so I asked him to step outside of the store with me and open NAVIGATION and then MAP to see if it locks on. Sure enough, his phone wouldn't get a lock either.
Too make a long story short it seems that this phone has messed up GPS or maybe Sprints network in my area really is undergoing some repairs. Whatever the case is it is very irritating to me. I sold my NUVI GPS because my old EVO had some kickAss GPS but this phone has been a nightmare. I'm going to give it a few more days and call SPRINT again. I'm not going to be stuck with a phone w/o working GPS for another 1 3/4 years!
The thing is that GPS has nothing to do with network. Even if something was wrong with the towers and you couldn't use network location to pin you onto the map, GPS itself is totally independent and should work. Maybe it's the LTE rollout?

Your guess is as good as, if not better than mine considering you do tech work on Sprint phones. All I know is that the day is going to come when I need to get somewhere by car and the fact that I can't rely on my "award winning smartphone" to get me there pisses me off.
You bring up a point that I am interested in. Like you mentioned, I thought that our GPS signal is directly related to the GPS satellites and the only thing data is needed for is to load the maps. In theory we should be able to use a NAVIGATION type app w/o data at all if the full map was installed to our phone and we have satellites for the GPS?
Does Sprint have their own GPS satellites or does everyone on the planet use the same one? I have no idea how that kind of thing works.

GPS isn't touched by Sprint. Another thing you can try, in case it IS the phone trying to pick up your location by the tower, is to turn off network location and only use GPS. See if you can get a lock like that.
PS I don't work at Sprint anymore; my boss was a total douchebag pothead.

BUMP!
I can't believe that with all of the prior issues, that we have yet another basic device function that DOES NOT WORK. What's weird, is that it seemed that there was a time when it DID work ok, but tonight I used it for the first time while navigating (kept my in-dash GPS on for comparison), and this thing could not find it's way out of a box. Even when there was a GPS lock and I was driving on a highway (in NJ), it had me on back roads and was spewing nonsense directions.
I also have GPS Stats, and all of the other suggested 'fixes' installed, and this is just plain broken. I was on all EL29, though recently my Kernel was moved to EL26. I'm going to go back to EL29, but I seriously doubt that will help.
If anyone has more information on this, please share.

Please help my resolve my Searching For GPS issue

Hello, I am running an Epic 4G rooted with FC09 Pre rooted rom. (CWM / Odin)
I just rooted a couple of weeks ago as I was thinking it might fix up my GPS issue, but other than the phone being a bit faster and me being able to get rid of some junk... the GPS issue is the same.
Using Google Navigation, unless I'm within a couple of minutes of my destination will go into a "Searching for GPS" mode... then eventually lock up.
The TeleNav software works flawlessly, but I don't get the Satelite views like Navigation which are real handy around here with all the hidden signage and such. I don't recall the Telenav software ever loosing Satellite other than the typical brief hesitation of the tracking icon, and then it catches up.
So far using Titanium I cleared the cache and uninstalled Google Maps. Verified both the Maps and Nav icons were gone from menus where they exited, space recovered etc.. Restarted phone. Installed Google Maps. I did this before it was rooted as well, using the Store as normal.
I installed the GPS Test software. I noticed in only slightly less than optimal conditions like indoors, but next to a south facing window, it will show good signal on 11, 12 or more satellites and show NONE in use. Not sure if this is useful or not because as I stated... Telenav works all the time and seems to even track better than Google Navigation.
I have seen info on a GPS Fix but wasn't sure if it will work on FC09 pre-rooted rom.
Frankly there is a TON of discussion about this phone and the GPS, but I haven't seen any concerning FC09 and also noting that Telenav has no issues.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I love this phone. I'm not sure I understand the advantages of rooting yet, but other than this GPS annoyance, I love this phone.
Thanks in advance.
Miles
Did you try clearing and resetting AGPS in GPS Test?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
Umm... no I didn't. Well not until now. Didn't know I had that option but found it and did it now. Is this something that will need to be done any time I get the "Searching for GPS" or is this something that fixes the problem altogether?
Thanks
Ok, well good news/bad news. I had the opportunity to test as I just went to the bank, less than a mile away. As noted above I did the clear and update.. Navigation acquired and routed faster than I ever remember it doing it. I actually started IN my house, put the phone in my pocket, took it out of my pocket and put it on the dash in the car. As soon as I started moving in the car it was tracking perfectly.... for about 1/4 mile. While I was waiting at a light, yes stopped... I saw the "Searching for GPS" come on.
For giggles I did a clear and update of AGPS again. At this point I was already at my destination so I entered my home address. Again it found it immediately and routed immediately and I didn't even get out of the bank parking lot before I got the Searching for GPS. I decided to just observe and noted that it was sortof tracking me, but I think that was strictly AGPS and Wifi vs Satellite. When I got home, GPS Test showed 9 Satellites NONE in use. So standing in my driveway I did the clear and update of the AGPS again. It immediately went from none in use to 3 in use.
Again, I have had this issue long enough to know that Telenav would have worked fine. In fact I had a 45 minute ride just the other day at night, that started in downtown Bellingham, WA (City streets) where I had to turn around a go back for something I forgot and received two phone calls. Telenav Never missed a beat. So I'm thinking it's the Google Maps software more than the phone, but at the same time... Google Maps works just fine on my wife's Epic 4G. Her's is not rooted. It occasionally looses sat reception, but she either just exits and reenters the program or turns the GPS off and ON and she's back in business.

Maybe I wasn't clear enough in my original post. I uninstalled and reinstalled several times before rooting and at least twice since rooting. I used the term reinstalled, sorry for the confusion.
This also included clearing all the maps as well.
I have read about some sort of gpsfix app.. but not clear if it is for my version. Is that an option?
I'm open to all options at this point.

Maybe I'm making an assumption about how to delete all maps and unistall / reinstall the Google Maps program.
What I do is go into the program and clear all map tiles, then exit, go to Play, and uninstall. I also did the uninstall at another time via titanium by clearing cache and then uninstall.
Ok, so something is definitely up with MAPS. This time I cleared the maps, removed it again, insured the apk was gone. Restarted phone, ran gps test and cleared the AGPS and reset etc.. THEN I installed the latest version of Google Maps.
Same thing... I get a little down the street and I stopped to drop off a package at the postoffice and it's "Searching For GPS". GPS Test shows only a couple sats in use... but I bring up Telenav. I ride around the area with a destination programmed nearby, but I keep making turns to try and trip it up.... it stays with me and just keeps re-routing as needed.
If Maps tracked as well as Telanav I'd be a happy camper. While the telenav app is good for the actual directions, there is no satalite view without paying for it (google it's free) and entering destinations is a pain in the butt and not as accurate/quick as google.
Is there some conflict between Google Maps and the Epic 4G ? This is just silly.

Are GPS problems common on this phone?

I just switched our family over from Verizon a couple days ago. I got a Note 3 because I had one on Verizon and it works flawlessly. The GPS was wonky and took forever to lock, and after troubleshooting I exchanged it. The replacement is even worse. Loses signal for no reason etc etc. Is this a common thing? My Verizon one was flawless and T-Mobile seems gun shy to replace it a second time.
I have had uneven GPS service on Tmobile when it can to Samsung phones. Had the vibrant (worse GPS ever), S2 a little better, nexus (had to change GPS config files. Note 3 seems better in California, but I was getting bad GPS in Seattle maybe because it was lightly raining for 3 days.
Never had that issue
TWEAKED 1.0 NOTE 3
I have noticed very slow GPS locking on my note 3.
My girlfriends t-mobile s4 will lock much faster while driving. I honestly end up most of the times pulling her phone out and using maps if I am trying to find something quick and need a gps lock.
i got no problem here in nj with my note 3
Mine works great here but I'm using will03's build right now. It seems as though the stock software doesn't turn GPS on all the way.

No real problems using Google maps, but getting a direct lock can take a while using something like GPS status.
Locked in 8 seconds. Try clearing some stuff out with GPS tools from play store.

I definitely would say it needs to be on your end. Did you set the GPS location to North America? What rom are you running?any map apps?
TWEAKED 1.0 NOTE 3
Something isn't right, mine is working perfect, maybe some settings. Under location services, there is setting to use wireless networks, I'm not sure if this affects the GPS settings, but GPS absolutely needs network assist to get rough location for faster lock. Also first lock will take longer to download all the sat. data and if you have GPS off and travel some longer distance, again will take longer as all sats are out of position. Metal casing could affect GPS reception and some particular locations have heavy interference, for example there was one place in DC I could not get lock, either on purpose for security reason or due to some heavy side band radiation. Right now I'm inside a house with aluminum siding, zero GPS signal and it still shows perfect location to within 10-15ft, (sat view shows me at my house door exactly, probably last time it got good lock). I do have my GPS on at all time.

Since the phone is new it is running stock. I haven't even attempted rooting or any of that because I dont want to trip knox and then have them not take it back. This is the third Note 3. I even went to a second retail location to get the 3rd one. I really don't understand it. I am using the same case that I was on my Verizon phone, which is just TPU, so no metal. I can go outside with no obstruction and still at most only get a lock on 1 satellite. I have never experienced anything like this, 3 phones in a row with a hardware problem is hard to believe. I have tried Waze, Google Maps, all the gps status apps and what not, tried recalibrating compass, resetting gps cache, you name it. It is garbage. I am speechless and don't know what to do. The store will never believe I have had 3 bad Note 3's.
Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, I don't have any of these issues that should be getting in the way. At most I can only get a lock on 1 sat with no obstructions outdoors. Case is TPU, and have tried it without case. Running stock everything. Have factory reset many times.

Your GPS must be set to Asia. How long does it take to lock into more sat.

How would I go about changing this? Are you saying Samsung screwed up and set all these phones wrong?

Well to be honest Samsung is in that part of the world. But something still not right about ur situation. Have you done a full wipe and then just download maps. Don't add anything else?

Yes. Have also done safe mode so that only maps could be used.

No not safe mode. A fresh wipe and then maps only. Don't load anything but maps.
Also after that go to play store and get GPS test. Turn on GPS and open app. Take a screenshot about 15 seconds in.

I'm on Wicked and having no lock gps..I've used tweaks and gps configuration to north America and still not working.
Does anyone know where the gps antenna is located on the back? Wonder if it's a simple open and slight bend up fix like the first galaxy back in the day

On GS3 GPS RX ant is in the top right corner, I'm pretty sure Note 3 is the same.

GPS hardware failure...I think?

The aGPS works well enough that I haven't spent a lot of time troubleshooting, but sometimes I do need a full on GPS, and it flat out doesn't work.
I followed all the instructions for GPS Status & Toolkit, accidentally left it for a couple hours outside (fortunately it stayed nice), and it never found a single satellite.
I then installed Faster GPS, and tinkered with the gps.conf settings a bit, and it made no difference.
One thing notable is the GPS_DEBUG was set to 1 = "Error"...not sure if that is related, but even after changing that variable and confirming it stayed after a reboot, no improvement.
I also took it apart and the blue antenna appears to still be intact and properly seated, so I don't think that's a factor. Didn't see any burnt chips though, either.
Any ideas?

Looking at your troubleshooting methods this seems to be a software issue. Has the gps just recently stopped working or is this something that has just recently stopped working? Any new software updates installed recently? Applications? Etc.
My GPS doesn't work either; I didn't notice it until after I started using PACMAN ROM. It doesn't work with my Lollipop ROM either. I read around on google and lots of Samsung phones have this problem with lots of carriers. I too am looking for a fix..
I had this same issue. I had to get an app from the play store to fix it but it will erase/wipe your phone. I'll try to find the thread
It was called "CSC changer". It was free.
Again, it will reset your phone.

It says it won't work on 4.2 and up... I'm on 5.something. Any other ideas?
Roll back. Run it. Flash 5.0 again.
Remember back up your data!
Also there are several ones on the play store. I had to try 2 or 3 before one worked

I have a similar problem. However, my phone detects up to 28 sat but will not fix to any of them. I tried the GPS Toolkit stuff and FasterGPS but that didn't work at all. I even restored stock in order to make it work but it did not help fix my GPS. Does anyone know how to fix it?
