So i am a little confused... I just got the latest OTA and now i have an option under settings-->Wireless & networks called Tethering & portable hotspot and from the looks of it i can use my phone as a wi-fi hotspot and i do not have root. So can we now use this feature with no additional cost to our plans? How does this fit into t-mobile releasing new wi-fi tethering plans starting at $15 a month.
I just got the update too. USB tethering works fine, and to my surprise, so does the hotspot. I say surprise because I have not added the $15.00 plan to my account. The only thing is there is no direct shortcut available so i used Anycut to make one.
not too sure but....
I am very new to these phones in general so I am not too savey from reading other posts it sounded like t-mobile was going to give that feature free at first for a little while until they get it all straightened out. I also read that they would not use the wifi calling as your mins but I see on mine (I just got teh update like in hours ago) that it says wifi calling uses plan mins... which is just fine for me cuz i never go near my mins... so i dnk if that helps but i think for now the tethering is free but they will charge it later... but dont quote me.

For them to start charging you they need to have a plan first. But even so, if they ask you to pay up I suggest canceling your current plan without an ETF and signing on for the non-contract plans. You'll save money, get a subsidized phone, and once we have root, you'll have wifi tethering again
I can't get the usb tethering to work. Windows can't find the android phone driver. I've installed the android sdk. Did you do anything special to get the driver?
When I try the hotspot, my computer can connect to the phone but the phone does not get an internet connection.

My goal is to USB tether my laptop.
I used pdanet successfully before the update just fine but now I have the update and want to try to use the built in usb tethering.
I manually installed the update to the G2 so I had tethering and the wifi hotspot. The wifi hotspot worked awesome with my laptop and I went to try the USB tethering to my desktop, but windows 7 couldnt find the correct driver to use. I hunted around the forums and google'd a few different things, but came up empty. I am wondering if anyone else has found the solution to this yet and could please share.
I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit and my G2 is running 2.2 build 1.22.531.8
Thanks in advance
i saw the new settings as well but i dont think it will be free... tmo did release (or is going to release) a tethering plan for $15. I've been using wifi calling at home, i checked my usage and is coming under T-Mobile HotSpot--- im under a grandfathered plan
i guess if you are planning to use the hotspot i would be careful not to incur any data fees
FYI
I have just checked my bill... I have used Wifi Hotspot from my G2 and used just over 5GB of data. No charge. I have 4 days left of my bill cycle, will update when my bill comes out.
...one more thing, are all of you not able to use the wifi hotspot settings? I see a lot of people rooting their phones to be able to run a wifi hotspot. If so, why are only a few people able to do this, including myself.
If you need more information on my G2, let me know.
thanks.
When my desire Z had the stock rom it had no problems with wifi or usb tether, so it might be T-Mobile trying to sell their tethering plan with the g2.
True, although I checked with tmobile online and gave them a call and they said they are not charging me extra for me using my WiFi hotspot.
so i understand that this change only applies to hotspot tethering devices and not the smartphone data usage but what if you are using hotspot hack and running sprint hotspot app to tether?

If the hotspot app works like wifi tether in which it tries to mask your tether data as coming from your phone it will seem like to me that it won't be counted against you. But if the hotspot hack just allows you to use the app without paying for it then you may have the limits.

Naw, the way the stock wifi tether works is that it disconnects and connects to a different realm whenever you turn on the hotspot (so you have two different data meters). If you don't pay for the hotspot, you can't connect to the modem realm. However, the wifi tether just stays connected to the phone realm.
That said, they can tell if you are tethering, and if you data hog and tether you'll probably getting a polite letter from them telling you to pay or get cancelled and pay ETF
this have any effect on being rooted and using wifi tether app?
I have a tmobile galaxy s3 on the monthly 4g plan. I cannot get wifi tethering to work.
I downloaded foxfi and turn hotspot on but my pc can never see the wifi network name so i can never connect to it.
I download wifi tether and set it to galaxy nexus cdma and turn on wifi tether. My pc sees it and i can connect to it. Everything works great..for about 10 mintues and then every site i go to i get redirected to tmobile page to activate and upgrade to tmobile mobile hotspot. I even tried changing my device to auto, galaxy nexus gsm, galaxy s2, but tethering starts with an error and doesnt work at all.
How are you guys getting this to work?
And when foxfi hotspot does showup on my pc i try and connect and enter the password i set but it just gives me an error, and says unable to connect.

There is another companion app to download with Foxfi that is supposed to help it not get detected as hotspot usage. Also free. Works fine on my Verizon SGS3. Maybe you should give it a try if you haven't already. Sounds like TMo knows what you are doing already. As for more bring seen byyour LC, I can't help you there. Shows up fine when referring my tablet

I had the same issue so I called 611. They told me that when I upgraded to S3, they removed the Hotspot feature and so he added it back. I think T-mobile is trying to fool users into buying if they don't know. Call the rep and explain that you had it before the S3 and would like to get it back.
Good luck!

Ah but I can't do that since I actually don't have it. I'm on a monthly 4G prepaid plan so I don't have it and can't even purchase it.

I have a T-Mobile Note 3, still using the stock rom but I have rooted it. My question is there any way to wifi tether that does not "verify" tethering status with T-Mobile?
When starting up the built in hot-spot or FoxFi a popup comes up and tethering is verified with T-Mobile.
I know, I know, T-Mobile comes with X amount of free tethering. I have 2.5 gigs of free tethering and I never go over it. However, I'm going to Mexico for two weeks and T-Mobile has unlimited free international data but no tethering. I assume the "verify" step is going to stop me from tethering.
What rooted app will allow wifi tethering for the Note 3 that does no verification with T-Mobile? I've already tried 10 wifi tether apps from the market place and none of them work on the Note 3.
Bumping as I have a similar question. With Jellybean I just froze the provisioning apk and this worked. In Kitkat doing this causes force closes.
I have a Tasker task that turns on the hotspot when my radio connects to my phone via Bluetooth. This works fine if the screen is on, but the point is to have this happen automatically. If I have to take my phone out of my pocket and make sure the screen stays on, I might as well just turn on tethering manually. The task does run as I have verified that the other parts of the task run while the screen is off.
I'm pretty sure that all the info to address this is in a thread that I just bumped a minute or 5 ago.
I figured it out. At least for my situation. I have tethering and I wasn't trying to bypass any limits. I just wanted to enable tethering without the screen being on. I modified the framework-res APK to not call the provisioning APK and froze the Tethering*.apk files.
I tried to attach the file but it is not working. I will try again later.
framework-res.apk
I also added Bluetooth tethering option.
Can you give us the link daneurysm ? Thanks!

What do your APN settings look like? Since LTE isn't working, I'm wondering if its using different APNs which aren't checking for the tethering restriction.
my mobile hotspot has worked since day 1... on newest firmware now. not unlocked and havent touched any special settings. I use it daily.
Are you on an unlimited data plan? Looks like those plans in particular a locked up this way.
Ive been using the Samsung SideSync app to tether when I need to. It takes a lil bit to figure out how to actually make the thing work, but after that it worked perfect.
I had used SideSync for a while but couldn't get it to work reliably and of course you pretty much need the app to be able to share with someone else as that wifi password is pretty crazy. Still, I'll have to try again as I've rebuilt my phone and PC since the last time I tried it so maybe it will work better for me.
Mine has always been able to teather right out of the box. I just go to "settings > tethering & mobile hotspot" and turn it on. I am on a family plan with 30GB shared data but have never subscribed to the teathering service. I hope I am not being charged without knowing!!
I think your shared plan includes tethering. My old unlimited plan doesn't and apparently it can't added as they want to push people into the shared plans. I'd actually pay for it if they'd let me.

Being ~able~ to tether probably still won't help. I'm also on a grandfathered AT&T Unlimited and have struggled with tethering for a long time since I travel a lot.
IIRC, a little-documented change in Android circa 4.1.2 lets carriers detect tethering at the OS level -- there's nothing you can do to hide it. When I tethered on my N4, I got a nasty letter that basically said cease-and-desist or I would be forcibly moved to a plan that included tethering.
I tether all night and all day on my Note II 4.1.1.

I did a fair bit of tethering on 4.12 but almost always used VPN on the PC and other devices I was using and never had trouble. I didn't do a crazy amount and still don't plan to. Just need to tether every now and again. At this point if I could tether and they give me a hard time, I think I'd jump ship to TMO unlimited. But of course I can't even tether now anyway so not like getting caught is a problem.
Hmmm. I could tether on straight talk, but now on Cricket and cannot.... Unlocked ATT Note 4
I'm on Cricket with a Note4 unlocked and I Cannot get Hot spot to work to save my life. This is extremely Frustrating.

I couldn't get the hotspot to work either by going to tethering and mobile hotspot through the settings menu, but when I swiped down from the top of the screen at the home screen to access the notifications menu and selected hotspot it works. I have a locked ATT Note 4 running on StraightTalk and it has been working fine. I am also using android 5.1.1 unrooted. maybe this will help you. I was very frustrated as well especially when i realized i couldn't root my phone to fix this issue.

I do not have that as an option? I looked to add it but I don't see it
