Hi everybody,
After the cm13 on my Zenfone 2 (ZE551ML / Z200A) crashed down with no recent backups, I decided to upgrade to Lineage OS 14 now that I had to reinstall the ROM anyways. And now I'm stuck:
My device is encrypted (as it always has been). Since the first boot of Lineage OS the encryption method seems to have changed to an Android Nougat - specific encryption method. That means:
My installed TWRP 3.0.2 is now unable to decrypt the phone (known issue, as I found out).
The TWRP version 3.1 that would be able to decrypt it, is however not available for my Zenfone 2.
Even without a screen password, PIN or pattern set, TWRP still promts for a decryption password.
Without the TWRP working, I believe I cannot make any changes to the system, e.g. downgrading back to cm13, without wiping the entire internal storage.
The only thing that does seem to work is ADB sideload, but even so, Google Play Services installed from a side-loaded GAPPS e.g. doesn't work.
Now, how can I restore a state on that phone model where I have a working TWRP recovery that can modify the system partition?
Is there maybe an unofficial TWRP 3.1 for the Zenfone 2 or an alternative recovery that does handle the Nougat encryption?
Or is it somehow possible to downgrade back to cm13 without decrypting yet without losing all data on the internal storage?
I'm scared of trying to compile TWRP 3.1 from the source code myself as I have no experience "building" whatsoever.
Thanks for your help!!
Have you tried 3.0.3 available in the LinOS thread?

Yes, as available on theflamingskull.com. Either version cannot decrypt the phone (even when re-installed).
This one works for my encrypted phone (encrypted with CM14.1):
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=457095661767154983
Even with encrypted f2fs (changed to f2fs with this one).
Z200A is Z00A Essentially, right?
If yes: https://infinitus-rom.com/devices/asus/asus-z00a
You can download TWRP 3.1.0 there
I use this one too, it works flawlessly
Thank you!! Those worked! For some reason I always flashed version 3.0.3-M3 without noticing the M3 at the end. Starting with version 3.0.3-M4 as you linked, I was able to get back into recovery decrypting my phone! :good:

A while ago I posted a workaround to use custom recovery and full device encryption and it seems like it's STILL needed, meaning I can't use TWRP, unless someone has found a ROM that has working encryption with TWRP? I've tried a few ROMs so far, as well as the latest stock ROM (NJ2 - 4.4.2). TWRP just gives the error "cannot find crypto footer" and the devs have said in the past this is a "wontfix" problem. I'd really, really like to put Marshmallow on here but I need full device encryption and TWRP support. So frustrating.
I don't mind wiping this device and re-encrypting as many times as needed, I just need it working.
Hello, after i got my op3 i instant decrypted it with fastboot and installed freedomos because i heard there could be problems with rooting etc.
But now i heard, that you can use Customroms and twrp even with encrypted storage, what i find really nice so thiefes can't access my data easily.
Now the question is, can i simply encrypt my device in settings -> security with a password and can i simply enter the password in twrp then, and is the behavior the same as the forced encryption on stock oxy?
Also i have another problem, i cant use cm13, cm14 and resurrectionremix, because it stucks on the op logo on boot. I read that this because the data is decrypted. Will encryption fix this problem or do i have to do the method2 of the unbrick guide to fix it? Well, i can just use my nandroid restored freedomOS rom at the moment, any other roms results in a bootfreeze, even if i update freedomos.
Best regards and thanks for your help guys :fingers-crossed:
I have a Oneplus 3 running TWRP 3.0.2-1 and the last stable kernal I had was cyanogenmod 14.1 I have access to fastboot and TWRP recovery but I can't mount the data partition and i'm pretty certain its corrupted and I don't know how to fix it.
Yesterday I was trying out CM14.1 and ended up deciding that I would rather go to OxygenOS 3.5.6 open beta 7 instead. TWRP wouldn't load so I freaked out and flashed several versions of TWRP in a misguided attempt to fix the problem. At some point i'm pretty sure I also flashed the OxygenOS 3.5.6. Somehow I managed to get TWRP working but I can't boot into Oxygen. I get the Oxygen icon for a few seconds and then the phone reboots.
There was nothing important on the phone so i'm not concerned with saving anything. I just want to return to a working state and I have no idea how to do that. It seems like I somehow have to repair my data partition or create a new one? I don't know. Please help or guide me in the right direction!
Solved
I noticed an option in TWRP to format the data partition and that solved the problem. I was able to load Oxygen OS onto it like I intended and now all is well!
Hi everyone,
I would like to know if I can use device encryption in Lineage OS 15.1.
I currently have TWRP 3.2.2-0 installed on my Samsung Galaxy S5 Plus (kccat6).
Can TWRP 3.2.2-0 decrypt Lineage OS ?
By the past, I have seen many posts on forum, telling that they had trouble with the encryption or when they wanted to update LineageOS (which is currently in Nightly phase... so where updates can be important).
Thank you in advance for your answers !
Yes you can, but you have to update your TWRP to the latest version (3.2.3-0), they fixed the automatic installing of OTA zips on encrypted devices
Thanks lucaslbbh. So I made it. I was astonished to see that the process lasted only 9 min... Unfortunately, my phone was unable to start after that (bootloop).
I came back to TWRP, entered my password and restored my Nandroid backup.
Surprinsgly, it kept the encryption : I have to enter my PIN for each startup, and when I want to enter in TWRP. In the security menu, it's said it's encrypted.
Is it possible ?

This guide was only tested with Nougat but it says the ROM has to be unrooted when encrypting /data. Maybe that's your prob?
Hello everyone,
i finally got the unlock code and moved from chinese to xiaomi.eu MIUI 10 rom . I installed lazyflasher, TWRP 3.2.3 and was good to go in a reasonable amount of time but i hit a wall. for work i need to encrypt my phone, it's non-negotiable and has to be done. but when i try to do it, the operation fails. as much as i read it's because newest versions of twrp reserve/lock/enumerate all the blocks of /data and there's not enough space to store encryption files in the /data. There are two ways out of this: either downgrade to an earlier version of TWRP ( 3.1.0 should work) or extend the /data partition. Now the problem is that i have already set up a lot on this phone so a complete wipe will be painful..
So my question is, can i get encrypted without wiping my phone? is there a way to downgrade TWRP or extend /data without formatting / wiping?
I also need an encrypted phone ...
Have you tried this?

I still have to wait 255 hours to try this myself ....

use nijel8's twrp recovery for decryption
just flash recovery image in twrp
i flashed nijel's TWRP and now i can get through that window i was stuck on, but i get a toast with "find device closed unexpectedly" . i disabled find my phone and logged out of the xiaomi account i had on the phone, then rebooted and tried again. same thing. maby i should root and give full rights or something to the location app....
