Google assistant is done through voice commands. Google search brings up the keyboard.

That used to be the case, but is no longer.
Keyboard is present, and can in fact be set as the default input method for assistant, if you desire.
OP: not sure whay its not coming up for you. Make sure play services is up to date.

I'm right there with you. I'm currently on Android O Beta 2 of the Pixel. When I was on Beta 1 I couldn't update my Google App so I rolled back to Android 7.1.2 and updated everything then proceeded to rejoin the beta. I've even done a factory reset while using O and still no keyboard option. If you ask the Assistant "can I just type" she even replies saying to just press the keyboard icon. I've submitted feedback to Google but I probably won't hear anything back. Today I decided to try again after installing the new beta. I uninstalled all updates and cleared cache. Still nothing.
So much for the conversational Google Assistant..
I'm in exactly the same boat. My wife and I both have a Pixel with Google App & Gboard up to date (mine was beta) with the phone's language set to English US and the keyboard the same.
She has the keyboard option, I do not
I've been on the chat with Google Support a number of times, but still no help. I did have the keyboard for a few days when I made another of my account as primary, but it then disappeared randomly overnight.
It's very frustrating as I would use it a lot more especially when the kids are asleep.

I now heard that it is a server side phased roll out with Gmail id as a criteria(not device dependent). When I relate this with your notes, I feel it is correct. The only option is to wait it out.
I think that's the case, however Google support isn't much help on the issue.
Did you end up getting the keyboard? If so, what did you have to do?
What do you mean?

I have Google app, Play Services and Gboard all on beta versions, I have Nougat, I have all of the other features, but the keyboard (which is what I wanted the most) He says if I leave beta and try his app, it might work, but I tried and nothing happened, and I don't want to leave beta.
I tried beta and I'm not off all betas to see if it makes a difference, nothing on my side...
Hello, y'all, I have just now received the Keyboard option along with history. It's been like 7h I got it and it wasn't here when I woke up, it's 20h20 where I am.

Hey guys, I really want to run GA but don't like Nova due to not having the left google now side card available. I'll be using a Pixel Launcher zip. Is there any way this is possible with the OP3 on latest OOS? Thanks
U can get GA by using an xposed module called assistant enabler. I'm on oos 3.2.6 and am able to use it but one issue I'm facing is that it doesn't retain my voice training. Whenever I say ok Google, it prompts me to train it. Gotta find a solution.
If you got root, then just add the following lines at the end of your build.prop.
ro.product.model=Pixel XL
ro.opa.eligible_device=true
After that, force close your google app, clear it's data and reboot. And you should have your google assistant working.
Note: this would actually show up your phone as Oneplus Pixel XL in every place. Not that it breaks anything but just an aesthetic trade-off.

I found out a solution from Xposed Assistant Enabler topic. Some users posted that upgrading Google app to 6.8.x beta version solved the issue. I googled for beta google app and installed one. Then I followed Sabissimo's instructions and got it working. Sometimes though I get a blank screen even though the assistant works fine in the background. Like when I say OK Google I don't get any notification window. Only taskbar changes color but still the assistant works and opens up things normally on the screen.
These are the instructions I followed: (I had to update Google app to a beta version before I got it working)

Thanks will give it a try. Is there anyway to get the live wallpapers working as well on Marshmallow?
Hello everyone.
As you may have heard, Google is making its assistant available for other phones:
"Google says it’ll make the bot available to all phones running Android 6.0 and newer, as long as they’re running Google Play Services."
I'm under Lineage OS on the 128GB Mi5, and I see Google Play Services listed in the Apps section of the settings.
Is it safe to assume Lineage users will get it in due time, effortlessly?
Thank you.

Yes. It will take a few days for it to roll out.
I have received Google assistant. Google play services version 10.2.99
I using motog3 osprey with latest Lineage nightly of 09.03.2017. I just want to know, to get google assistant officially, is it necessary to have Google App as a system app?
Don't know about Google app being system app. But in my case Google app is system app and Google play service version is 10.2.99 and most important is that my device system language is US ENGLISH

I'm using htc one m8.. built 20170309.. Google play service is 10.2.98 .. no google assistance yet ?
Try to update both Google app and play services and then set default system language to us English then clear cache of Google app and play services then reboot your device and try again. Hope it may work
Or you might have to wait. Rollout can be gradual, even within a country, language setting, or services version.
Remember that official information was that it would rollout in certain countries first.
I just flashed this on my Nexus 7 2013 and it works great!
http://www.lineageosdownloads.com/get-google-assistant-lineage-os/
Considering the various report of erratic behavior or just plain not working after an update to Google services, I think I'm going to just wait until I get it officially.
Solution
So my home button with Lineage had the weird behavior of being the same as the "Recent" button, pulling up all the recent apps I have running in the memory. I Just went into settings and under "Buttons" changed the function of "Home Long Press Action" to "Search Assistant". Voila! I had assistant pop up the next time I long pressed the home button. Hope this helps.

Definitely Assistant and not just Google Now, with the cards and all? Because I have that same setting for the long press on the home button (set to "Search assistant") but it just takes me to Google now (see attachments).
What's your Google play services version?
For me, it's definitely Assistant. I think it has to at least be set to that to update to Assistant when it rolls out to you, otherwise it will just always be the multi task/recents button.

Out of curiosity, and to know if they're already expanding the first wave of English speaking countries+Germany, where are you from?
And yeah. The rollout is region based. Even if Play Services is updated.
Enjoy it! Looks like Portugal is still in line.
I thought I shouldn't open a new thread for this so here goes:
1. I'm on LineageOS, March 14th version;
2. Xiaomi Mi5 Ceramic/128GB+4GB Ram version;
3. Play services version 10.5.48.
Upon fresh Lineage install, I had Google Assistant right away (definitely assistant, and not just Google Now) upon Home button long press. One or two days later I had only Google Now.
Is this normal?
Can confirm the same @zoejo. OPO, lineage OS. Gplay services 10.2.99. I think Google app updated and I lost the assistant. Now it just displays the card/screen contextual search
As of this morning, I have assistant again.
Noticed no change other than an update to the Google app.
All we need to do these days is to add ro.opa.eligible_device=true in build.prop and have android 6+... No enabler or anything. Why not have that by default?

I am on the latest 7.1.2 Verizon build and I noticed when I did a factory reset that in Google+ settings, I no longer have the option under settings to keep the contacts up to date. This option would always keep my user profile picture under the phone settings to stay updated instead of a blank photo. Anybody else seeing this?
Yes, thank you! I thought I was going nuts lol
I just got a OnePlus 3t (my N5x put itself in reboot purgatory) and while trying to set it up, I couldn't find this option for the LIFE of me.
Any idea on how we can get this functionality back?
I really liked how it synced with my G+ profile pic and I never had to worry about it...

Google removed it a couple weeks ago. You have to load your own image under quick settings account now. As for tracking contacts where abouts you can do it through maps. But the person you tracking needs to set up who they share location with

This fixed worked 100% for me. While it's a bit annoying way to get back functionality, there's really not much to it.
I also tested it by letting the app update from the Play Store, then changing my profile pic in g+ and it updated in android. Win!

On Marshmallow (6.0.1), I was getting "App not Installed" errors when I tried to install the old APK over the new one; had to revert the G+ app to stock (Settings > Apps > Google + - tap top right, then "Uninstall Updates") first to get the older APK to install.

I have the same problem on my Pixel XL running 7.1.2 (NJH47B).
The fix is fine at first, but stops working when I update Google+ to the latest version again.
Funnily enough, this doesn't affect my older devices running Android 6.x and below - my profile picture stays ok regardless of Google+ version.
Help, anybody?
Any luck for anyone?

I've tried downgrading but as soon as the app is updated the pic disappears, I'm on a Nexus 6P 7.1.2.
The same thing happen on the beta version of Android O.
I'm running on the latest firmware and I also received the April Security patch update. But I still don't have Google Asistant. Long pressing the home button opens the Marshmallow style Now on tap interface, and the Ok Google voice activation opens up traditional voice search. Any ideas how to activate Google Assistant without unlocking the bootloader.

I'm pretty sure it is because you are located in Russia. I'm surprised GA works at all. You may try resetting app defaults (settings>>apps¬ifications>>all apps>>3dot menu>>reset app preferences), checking your version number against the latest version. Mine is v7.17.28.21.

I'll try resetting but I had it on my previous phones Nexus 6 and note 5. All my phones were from US but I always needed to set up my phone on VPN to activate Google now because it always said that GN isn't available in my country. Now the message is different. It points on my account.
I have Google home and reminders work there perfectly.
