[HELP] Slot Sim 1/2 & Vibration mortor doesn't work - ZenFone 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
recently my zenfone 2 got very hot in my car, I used it as GPS and charged it during the trip.
And BOUM, I was writing a message and the Sim card suddenly stop working .
So I tried the Slot 2 twenty minutes later, it worked for 1-2 minutes.
I thought it was a ROM issue, so I switched to a complete new ROM (the lineage one) but that not solve the issue. I just see that the vibration motor doesn't work either .
Finally, I think it is a material issue... I already bought the Sim slot card piece replacement for changing it myself, but how can I know if this will be enought ? Maybe is this a little part of the motherboard which is dead ? I don't want to desesperaly try to repair my phone and loose the guarantee (I expect that I already loose the guarantee with the unlock bootloader/root).
If anyone had a similar experience, please share it with me :highfive:
Thanks

well here may be two scenario. A. too much heat damaged the components. B. heat caused the components to desolder.
take little soldering paste and apply heat to components especially ICs

Ok thanks, I'll try it before open it and install the new card slot... What do you mean by ICs ? And Do I have to unplug the sim card slot to apply the paste ?
Thanks

i didn't get you point. you do not need to apply paste to sim card connector. i meant to apply paste on motherboard components. like processor, power ic etc. better do not heat the emmc though

[Q] no sim card, no network/carrier detected

hi,
my htc one m8 doesn't see my sim card anymore. also a new one.
when removing the sim card the it says "sim card removed"
i've do a full software reset. and also reinstalled the firmware.
when i do a google, on repair shops i see that it's fixed by mainbord soldering.
Any one any idea what they are soldering to fix this?
thanks
Do you still have warranty on the device? If so, rather take it back to have it fixed/exchanged instead of attempting a DIY that'll leave you possibly messing up your device. If you don't know what to solder then it's probably not a good idea to attempt such things.
Maybe try the old HTC One trick of the tape at the back of the tray that holds the card, see if maybe the problem is that the tray doesn't allow the card to fully make contact. The tape should be enough to force the card down a bit more and press it into the circuitry. If this doesn't work then you might have another problem, either radio firmware isn't right or it's a hardware issue in which case it'll be better to take it in for warranty and/or repairs(from a professional or carrier service center).

[Q] 2nd SIM keeps disconnecting and asking unlock PIN

Hi!
I've the zenfone2 ze551ml from four days and I'm very happy with it except the fact that in the last two days it keeps disconnecting the SIM in the second slot.
I don't relate it to anything particular: I've tried to shake the phone and tried also to open different apps but the problem seems to occur randomly.
It's very frustrating...what you think about it? Do you have any suggestion?
(Note: I've tried swapping the two sim card, the problem remains on the second slot and randomly it keeps asking the unlock PIN....)

Same issue for me with my brand new Asus Zenfone 2 (ZE551ML) since the first day.
I swapped the 2 sim cards but just the sim on slot 2 remains disconnected randomly but very often in a day (10-15 times).
It's very annoying.
Thanks in advance for your help.

I've spent two days without the problem but yesterday .... "sim 2 disconnected".
The problem is back here again! I don't know what to do, I don't want to send it back to repair... :crying:
However after buying I've installed the two available firmware upgrades without any hard reset, I think that I will try an hard reset before contacting the customer service...
Is it the same for you t0uchfr3nch?
(well, I forgot an important thing: I'm italian and I have the italian ze551ml grey version with the original flip cover on)

Hi codecrusher! I'm from France and i've done the same thing as you.
I've done all OTA upgrades without reseting the phone too.
I'm just thinking about rooting it to see if it occurs again.
As you, I d'ont want to send it to repair because i've installed and set up everything.

Hi codecrusher,
so I think I've understand what's going wrong with that sim2 slot.
It's not a software issue, it's physical!
I've just inserted a tiny piece of paper in the sim2 slot then I've inserted the sim card below the paper.
The sim card is now compressed between the paper and the pins.
No more disconnections for more than 6 hours at this time.
I'll keep you updated at the end of the day.

I can confirm you that I had no disconnection on SIM2 today. :fingers-crossed:
It seems fine now.
If it happens again, just try the paper thing.
Before doing this, i had a lot of disconnections this morning and no more now.
Good luck!

Hi t0uchfr3nch!
After your post I've removed the battery cover and I've seen that in effect there were disconnections every time the sim slot was pressed.
As you have advised I've tried placing paper in the sim slot but it did not work for me because I've noticed that on my zenfone the problem was with the pressure of the metal part of the slot and not with the movements of the SIM inside. At the end I have placed a piece of rubber between the battery cover and the metal part of the sim slot (in order to create a constant pressure on the metal part of the sim slot) and it has worked fine until.....today.
Today I have updated the phone with the new firmware and after the first reboot it has immediately started with that same weird behavior.... every little pressure on the battery cover caused a SIm disconnection. Now I've removed the piece of rubber and it works fine again.... Don't know what to say...
I'll keep this thread updated.

Hi codecrusher,
your issue is very strange and very difficult to understand. For my part, no more disconnection occured since the paper trick but maybe your problem is not exactly the same.
I'm sorry to say that but maybe you should think seriously on returning your phone to Asus to have it repaired or replaced.
Regards.
Same problem wirh my zenfone 5

Not anymore. The piece of paper did the trick.
I have also the problem with SIM 2 but the paper trick does not help ... what else can I do, why is it ... on the SIM card or on the shaft (hardware defect)?
hi there, if i'm not too late, this happen because the build of asus sim slot..
it suppose to build to hold the sim in place but some zenfone 2 does not hold the mircosim and the sim is able to move if you try to adjust the sim.
however i believed that asus KNEW this problem that is why on the cover there is 2 rubber stopper that is near the sim slot location. this is to STOP the sim card from coming out.
when you close the case, you need to align your stopper to block the sim from coming out, else you face moving sim.
it happen for both of my sim card btw. you do not need any other thing to block it unless you brought a back cover from online shop that is not original from asus.
I have the same problem in the sim 2.
I tried to make thick with a sticker on sim , but the problem continues to random.
I've solved the problem by ordering a new piece from China for about 8$ (included shipping).
I live in Italy and it takes about 20 days to arrive here.
Since it's a flex cable, the replacement it's not an hard operation.
You'll have only to:
-remove the battery cover of your zenfone
-remove the screws under the cover (they are common cross screws, if I remember well they are 9)
-remove the back plastic plate
-unplug the old SIM connector
-plug the new one
-reassemble the smartphone.
It's a month since I've performed this operation and everything is fine now.
Don't know if I can post links here.
However go on famous commercial chinese websites and search "Sim Zenfone 2 cable replacement" or something similar.

where did u buy the replacement from?
I've had the same problem, phone bought from Amazon it. I changed sim 1, but had sim 2 cut. Could it be because of that?
Anyway I solved with an hard reset.. Nothing more...
Hope this can help you!

Asus Zenfone 2 ZE551ML - very slow charging, not detected by PC.

I have two pieces of ZF2 ZE551ML at home. One is my and the other one belongs to my wife. My wife's phone had a broken mini USB port - the first 2 pins from the left were visible - the plastic had broken apart. Firstly, I did not relaise it could be the problem, luckily I managed to change the whole PCB including the broken USB port, however after this change the phone is not being detected by a PC, nor it is fast charging. As I have two phones at home, I checked performance with the other unit and unfortunately, the other one does quick charge and is detected by aPC, so it is not the cable, neither is it the missing software.
I bought another PCB and changed it as well, however still no joy. Does anyone have any brilliant idea how to fix it. I should also say that all other or most of the functions of the phone are working fine (at least those I managed to check: GPS, Wi-Fi, GSM+dual SIM, torch, bluetooth, and so on).
The only problem is that the phone loops on the SMMI Test #1 and is not going any further. I have also tried to detect phone by adb, still no joy. The phone is not rooted!
I have my personal suspects that it could be the faulty main board or a software bug. Any ideas how to fix it?
My phone is running LP 5.0, soft: LRX21V.WW-ASUS_Z00A-2.20.40.198_20160930_8756_user044030427_201501060109, kernel [email protected] #1 Fri Sept 30 15:31>23 CST 2016
Sdcard slot is working?
I would check the connections on both ends of the flex cable with the sim and sd slots on it.
I am having the same problems (because of the busted sd slot). I ordered a new flex cable. When it arrives (approx. 2 weeks) I'll know if that was the cause.
Yes, SD slot is working and both SIMs, so the phone itself works fine, only very long charging and is not detected by a PC.

Hi, I did changed both PCBs between phones. Firstly, I had the same problem on both phones, then I made better connections and the batteries started to warm up. Finally, the new one works with the other phone, the old one from the other phone still creates the problem. Probably, it is not the PCB then, or USB connection. It must be something else.
Anyone, any idea?

try fashing raw firmware
on motherboard you can inspect or clean the connector where pcb connects. use magnifying glass to inspect connector
Ok, I actually would like to flash the raw firmware, however I need some guidance here, as the phone that has a problem, is not rooted, and it cannot be detected by any PC now, so I am stuck in the middle and do not know how to proceed...

i am little confused here... you changed pcb on one mobile and fast charger do not works on that. you have other mobile which is working perfectly. both are same model.... if right!! do the following thing to find out...
Phone A:- changed PCB. no fast charge, not detected by pc.
Phone B:- working perfectly normal..
now we want to guess if pcb is faulty or there is issue with flex cable or any software related issue..
remove motherboard from phone A. and install it in Phone B.. if on Phone B. things works well then definitely its problem related to pcb.. if things don't works on phone B too. then it may be a firmware related problem..
raw cannot be installed without pc..... the thing you can ty is updating firmware from sd card via recovery mode.

That is correct, I say it again - I have two phones, same model, same software, kernel, etc. One had a damaged mini USB port, so I purchased 2 PCBs which have mini USB port souldered onto them. I bought them twice, as I was not sure if the first one I got was the correct one. Now, after your first message I changed the PCBs between phones and the result is the same, phone A (which is ok) works with the replacement PCB, and the PCB from working phone still does not work with phone B (the one that has a problem).
As a second step I replaced motherboards between phones now, and the result is still the same, meaning the motherboard from phone B does not seem to work better while it is in phone A body. The symptoms I'm struggling with are: charging takes over 8-9 hours, so it is considerably extended charging (battery is original factory battery 3000 mAh), the phone does not fastcharge at all and it is not detected by any PC.
The phone is not roooted so, I'm afraid I cannot make any changes to firmware through recovery, as it needs to be connected by a cable to a PC, unless there is something else I can do about it, but how to get any further?

Is your ext. sd being seen in file manager ?
Can you get into 6.0 recovery ?
If yes , you can now downgrade which will reset your fone , With a factory reset in the process , check my signature below.
Your fone not being seen maybe driver issue if other zens too are not being seen...but ..let's see what happens after downgrade.
After downgrade if still slow charge, reboot while connected to charger.
If same prob ..hardware !

Thanks, I was not so deeply checking all available options. SD downgrading worked well for me, however the problem still is in the phone. However, I discovered a few positive and negative signs, which tell me that there is something else - could be the connection - after upgrading to MM before the phone was restarted at least 3-4 times the screen was not going to sleep mode after a minute, it was coming back on and on and on again. After 3-4 restarts it behaved normally again. The same thing happened after downgrade to L.
Another positive discovery is that the SMMI test now works well and everything is ok now, before it got stuck on the 1st or 2nd test and was not going any further ....
One more spot, which was very hard to catch as it popped up for a 0,1 second but dissappeared then quickly so I had to record it with the other phone and play very slowly on the PC - it looks like the Asus cover window pops up and it says - move your finger around the circle to get quick access to your preferable apps and there is also a blue button: Do not show again . This is flashing now and then and I do not have Asus Cover, so the behaviour is quite odd to me.
I have a feeling that there might be something with connections, but really I do not know what else - I checked it 30 times and made sure everything was properly alligned and tight when I was changing the PCB with micro USB port.
By the way the other phone works well on PCs, so I must have all drivers installed, it is just the second phone that is half bricked... I'm wondering now if maybe flashing CM 12 or 13 will help, however as it is not rooted probably it will not work via SD card... or? Am I looking in the right direction?
Buddy , its hardware so software tweaks will be useless .
Buddy, we are on the same ****ing boat.
I tried to go back to 6.0,but i got my phone bricked and now i cant reverse it back because i need usb connection to the computer and simply it isnt recognized.
I suggest you to send the phone to the asus assistance centre or to buy a new usb port for your phone,as it is clearly damaged like mine.I need to do it too so if you want to wait me first so i can check if it works, ill maybe save you some money.

Well, my phone successfully reversed to Lolipop, and I changed the USB port, I talked to Asus authorised service centre and they said it will cost the price of the phone, so I just give up, as everything works, but not the phone with the computer via USB and not the quick charging. Asus centre said it is a motherboard failure, but I'm asking how is that possible if all other functions work well???

Yes, I see your point, but I cannot imagine how is this possible, when all other things work well on the phone and the SMMI test shows all sensors working properly?

Ask yourself the same 2 questions again once more
Is your phone recognised by PC ?
Is fast charging working now ?
If answer is no after downgrade .
You know the answer
i changed mainboard and working
well, i have the same problem and i try the following possibility and all unsuccessful.
1. i tried 3 different pcb still no luck
2. i changed sim flex still no luck
3. i changed battery still no luck
4. i changed lcd and digitizer completely still no luck
5. i wiped cache from android recovery MM still no luck
6. i wiped data and factory reset from android recovery MM still no luck
7. i install same latest os (MM) for ze551ml from sd card still no luck
8. i use original ac adapter and cable and tried working different one for every step.
so i want to ask a questions. can it be ground connection somewhere on cases? or motherboard
i am tired but problem found. it is exactly motherboard problem. i bought used original mainboard and all is working.
Note: other mainboard using same android os version so it is not os failure.

sandisk sd card has been ejected - G3 D855

Hello everyone,
I face a problem with my G3 D855 ( custom rom ) , my sandisk ultra 32gb keep rejecting and mounting again and again even though it work good on laptop and i tried it too on samsung S4 and worked well
Any one faced the same problem ?
any solution will be appreciated
i have the same with Adata 64GB. I don't think it's related to the card itself, because different cards also keep rejecting. It looks like slot problem, at least on my side.
If you still have warranty you can try to send back your G3 to repair. I did not find any other hw solution yet. In worst case i will just stay without sd card inserted.

Thanks for reply , my waranty is finished and i tested card 8 gb and worked well .
The strange thing is when i tried my sandisk class 10 on s3 it worked well
Well, i see the same problems on other forums as well with continuous disconnecting sd cards so it looks like typical issue after warranty end. Now i'm not even able to do a nandroid backup because it keeps disconnecting during the process...

Did you try it with stock rom ? i thought may be tis issue cause i use custom rom but i didn't tried to install the stock rom
I'm currently running Flumics, which is stock. But this all doesn't matter if i have also disconnections on recovery. It can't be ROM related.

I am running fulmics too and i know it is build from stock but we can't consider it like stock , but i will try it on recovery cause i didn't try this before
it's the beginning of the end
seemo, same story here: sd card failure, then G3 started to lose wifi connection
advice: consider buying new phone.
"baking" method helped me for a while. But it last only few days.
What is baking method?

But be advised it's a very controversial topic. Some users find it pretty dumb.
I'd recommend you to try it only if you have nothing to lose and if you have spare phone.

I can't buy new phone and no thanks i will not bake my phone lol
21st century engineering - putting to oven. However, i do believe it may fix some soldering problems, it may also easily do damage as well. I will bake it only when I face the screen flickering problem, but for now i will just use my G3 without SD card (i have the 3/32GB version)
I tested it on twrp recovery and it look good , that make me more sure it is custom rom problem
seemo, chances for the ROM reason are very low. SD-card is a major worldwide issue. There are tons of messages related to sd/sim scard on xda, reddit, 4pda etc.
After 2.0 - 2.5 yrs of usage G3 begins to fall apart. By now i have these major issues: sd-card slot ejects the card, wi-fi drops connection, yellowish spots on the display. And not only me, there plenty of messages here with the same issues.
But.. maybe you're lucky one =) and it is actually ROM related ussue
I have similar unfortunate opinion. It is the beginning of the end. First my SD card reading failed. Then screen started fading to black. Then random reboot. Now it switches off randomly and stays that way for a long time. I hope it is custom ROM issue for you and it gets sorted out soon . But I will suggest to get a new phone

Question problem with "sd card removed unsafely" notification

hello, can you guys help with this issue? looks like it is not just an A72 problem, but also on other models.
the notification is very frequent, and happens even while the phone is on standby.
what i tried so far
a 128gb sandisk extreme pro (old phone)
a 64gb sandisk extreme (gopro and camera)
a 64gb sandisk extreme (brand new)
a 32gb samsung evo plus
also
restarting the phone
unmounting the card and restarting the phone
physically removing and card from the phone and putting it back with phone shut off
removing the card and error checking it (in windows, using a card reader) then formatting it
formatting again on the phone
getting into the recovery mode and wiping the dalvik cache
full/factory reset
thread with other experiences here:
An SD card was removed unsafely. To prevent your phone from restarting... notification
Ever since the big update to Android 11 / One UI 3 I've been getting the "An SD card was removed unsafely. To prevent your phone from restarting unexpectedly, save unsaved data and restart your phone" notification, many times a day. After the update and prior to having this error, I have not...

Receiving the same notification with Samsung Evo 128 GB. The only solution I see as of now is to report the issue in Samsung Members and wait for a bug-fix.

Thanks, After doing 2 reports they told me to get my phone checked at a local samsung service. Seems like they are denying that it is a software issue. I really hope everyone reports it because it doesen't look an hardware issue to me, and I have difficulty on sending it to a local service...
edit. they are DEFINITELY asking me to look for hardware issue...
I have never gotten this notification on my A71 and A72, and I'm using an samsung evo.
Be 100% sure, that it's not hardware fault, before assuming it's the software. Is the SD card really locked in the tray? It shouldn't fall out when rotating the tray upside down. And there should be no dust in the tray also.
The golden connectors on the sd card needs to be clean too, make sure there is no fat/dirt on the golden connectors.

I assured all that. I even cleaned one of the cards with a rubber then gently rubbed with a clean pieceyof cloth. Today I'm getting a replacement and I will try that. It seems weird that other people around the world are having the same issue after Android 11 update.
The same error here, on a A72. I will wait for an update from Samsung and report it as well.
Same error here on the A72. I have a 512GB Samsung Evo Select (purchased directly from Amazon a couple of months ago) and it was working perfectly fine in my S20 FE but when I put it in the A72 it started giving me the error messages, even when I'm not accessing the SD card. So annoying. I'm convinced it's a software bug. There's a few with this phone. Updated it yesterday and on 30x zoom it actually saves the photo as if it were taken on 20x zoom, so the framing is way off.

for some reason the new unit didn't have the problem.. BUT it is under repair now since it had stuttering while recording. it also had a bad vibration motor (looks like they are not replacing that...) they are replacing the motherboard so who knows.. i think i'm gonna ask another replacement after the "repair"(they couldn't even reproduce the issue and they are changinh the mobo just because...) seems like quality control on samsung side is really poor. at least on middle range phones.
Do a low level format with a 3rd party app (not Windows) on the card.
Let the phone then format it.
Then load the data to the card while in the phone.
I would say if it still does it after that it's the phone ☠firmware☠
I don't update firmware if my OS is running fast and stable (hint)... and don't have any issues
Still happily running Pie...

i did that many times. one a72 had the problem, another not. but now i'm having the mobo replaced, so who knows... the same sd cards working perfectly fine on one and giving back the error on the other one... many other users are reporting the problem on the official forum for a72 and a52... never updated anything, came like this right out of the box

guys.. this is incredible... i went to samsung local service and they replaced the motherboard because i had an issue with the video stuttering while recording (NOT the sd removed issue)
guess what? after the motherboard was replaced i started getting the sd removed notification! i think there is a big flaw in the manufacturing process and it may be an hardware problem... i'm trying to get a THIRD unit and see what happens... i really don't know anymore...
update
for some reason i stopped getting the message. on the repaired phone and on the new one. may be the april update, or not (on the official forum other people with the same update keeps getting the error) but at least for me this is fixed (the phone has other issues tho...)
Having the same issues with an A52 5G.

SD Card Issues
Well just picked up my new A52 5G really enjoyed it at first but now my SD card keeps getting unmounted every time I restart the phone. ( The best part about this is the SD cards are made by Samsung tried 2 different ones both are 128G) (SAMSUNG...

After the last update i didnt get the notification again, im using sandisk ultra 64gb
I haven't seen this message for some time now, and for a reason I didn't want to bring it up
Hope they have solved it with an update, but it would be honest and brave if they had admitted there were issues.
Just ignoring the many complaint in Samsung Forum is not a good thing to do.
To ALL here...I too have been getting the same message with my new A72 & the unseated SD card - multiple times throughout the day, to the point I have to carry the opening pin with me. I've only had it 5 days now.
The problem is the flimsy cheap plastic tray - it's not a software problem folks.
I have found just pushing the tray in unseats the SD card.
I've also experimented with flexing the tray slightly verses just pushing it straight in...no difference - the top of the SD is unseated no matter how I push it in. Holding the SD doesn't help either
It must be constantly checked as I push it in slowly, checking & rechecking the SD. I have noticed it is constantly unseated all the way in. Once I get the tray carefully to that last point where it's mostly inside, I push it in quickly & restart the phone...it may take a while but invariably I get the dreaded message again...& for seemingly no reason - I havent dropped it but maybe it's just a vibration it doesn't like, like putting it down a bit roughly!
I'm taking it to my local samsung store today to see what they have to say.
Not good enough. We need a stable non flexible tray... full stop!!! I'll post again when I talk to them...

Try using a spacer like thin cut pieces of tape under or on the card. Holder or card may be out of specs...
As per my post last night the samsung store guys were surprised by the issue.
That did suggest sending the phone to samsung for analysis & then if the tech says it is a flaw I take it to the seller for "repair"
I doubt samsung will replace the tray with a better one though & frankly don't want to give my phone & all its data up...
I'm going to try taping the SD in place with a clear 'sticker' & see it that works!
