Motion and light sensors not working - Moto Z Play Questions & Answers

Hi everyone,
got my brand new Moto Z Play yesterday (after my Nexus 5X died suddenly without any apparent reason) and i'm here cursing my phone again.
I first noticed that the screen won't rotate (still when i was on marshmellow, now i completed all the updates and i'm runnig nougat), then I tried and tested all sensors with some apps found on the play store, and sadly gyroscope, light, accelerometer... none of this is working. They just don't output anything. I tried rebooting to safe mode and did a wipe cache; no luck. I also tried to search a bit, but it seems that I'm the only one with this problem.
What could it be? Any advice?
Thanks in advance!

If factory reset doesn't help, return it get a new one.

Just tried but no luck. It only made things worse. At first sensors were still not working... After a while I noticed it shut down by itself and now it won't even boot up...
I'm tempted to smash it on the wall...

Seems to be hw problem. I hope you can replace it in the shop or got new one from Moto.

Give the device for Replacement.
If its only 15 days with the phone.
If not, then give it to service center for Repair.

Screen turns on/off randomly

Hi, I'm new to this forum.
Some days ago my DZ started to turn on the screen randomly when it was locked. The phone is rooted, so i tried to wipe all data and install an updated version of my rom (virtuous), but it did not help. And now the screen also turns on/off (flashes for a couple of seconds) when I use it.
Does anyone has had this kind of trouble before? I hope it's not some hardware that are broken :/
Thanks for helping!
How's your phone now? My G2 was doing what sounds like yours was doing too, and then just died completely (the screen that is everything else works).
I bought a new LCD replacement hoping it would fix the issue. Followed a Youtube bit on replacing it, and successfully reconnected everything, but its not working. I'm going to be taking it apart again tomorrow to see if I possibly missed a connection but I don't think the screen replacement is going to work.
Could be a software issue perhaps. What are your thoughts?

g-sensor

Does anyone's G-sensor work? i ran the htc function test and it's not working. Any solutions? I've try a factory reset but no joy.

Mine stopped working last night.
When I tried the calibrator it failed saying "calibration aborted" the sensor checker also failed.
I went to the task manager and ended all tasks, I rebooted but no change so I switched off the phone then back on again and all was working
I will have to keep an eye on this

this is indeed a very weird thing mate, it's happening to a lot of people...
I'm sure it's a tegra3 related issue. Probably fixed on the next update.
Now that i think about it...i don't remember to have turnned off my phone when i had that issue...LOL
in conclusion to this subject, my latest "possible" fix is, fully drain your phone out of juice untill it doesn't power up and charge it again.
it should work afterwards.

Have you tried also killing all tasks in task manager?

G-sensor not working
Tried everything I can think off aside from draining the battery flat. Does the 1.28 rom version fix this issue? Seems like my g-sensor has been dead for a while...
Anyone on 1.28 have this g-sensor issue?
I have the same problem. I wrote a mail to HTC in yesterday about the problem and hopes they got an answer for this iritating issue.

Yup. Tried it all and the problem persists. Complete drain, factory reset, secure boot calibration, kill all tasks, ota update to 1.28 (from & to stock), superwiping and flashing a new rom (twice) , running htc's function test and getting "stuck" on the g-sensor test. And more.
Been there, done that.
The sensor doesn't react at all, so rotation won't work and in games like teeter, the ball just sits there no matter how I twist and turn.
And now HTC, via their chat, say that this might not be covered by the warranty since I have unlocked the bootloader. If I turn it in, they'll send it to a service centre, which may decide that the problem was caused by me (which is impossible since it was already there on stock), which would mean that 1) I'd have to pay for any repair or 2) I'd have to pay for "wasting their time" and cough up money for securely shipping it to/from the repair centre. Yay.
On the up side, the normal calibration aborts if I move the phone during the process, which to me would indicate that the sensor is working at SOME level, right?

My question is, was it working when you got it in the first place?
Mine unlocked itself after about 48hours...
The only thing I can remember doing, that I've never said before was that I dropped my phone several times in all possible directions on a very slim carpet as a desperate act...
My thought was, maybe if I drop it and shake it really hard, it might get loose eventually. (Yes I'm a bit crazy... )
It got back to work after 48 painfull hours and lots of failed attempts...
I had this problem, but it was fixed by a reboot. Dont know if that gives you any clues as to whether it is software/hardware related?
Yeah, it looks like some kind of hardware issue. I need to send this phone for repair. HTC has disappointed me - this will be the last HTC phone I purchase. Nothing but problems since day one. Stay people - you have been warned!!!

Actually I'm not quite sure if it worked in the first place, because I bought it used (from a guy who realized he hated Sense after three days). Nothing seems to get it to work, though I'm glad yours did.

Hum... maybe that's why he sold it sorry to hear it mate...
Well, if you are brave enough to do it, do what I did... shake it a lot, and drop it (from low altitude obviously) into a soft carpet... it might sound crazy, but the shaking could be enough to unlock the sensor... corner drop it all around and good luck! going to google it to see if there is any sort of recent found fix...
in the meantime get the app "sensor list" from the market and tell me the brand of your sensors if you can read it.
I had this issue, 3 days after I got the phone. Tried everything I could think of
(fact resets, etc). Still no joy, so I sent it back to the shop.
When they tested it , it was all workign fine again....
However I have a couple of thoughts on this (not tried it out yet so give it a go).
First of all disable that HTC Gestures/3 Finger rubbish. Secondly ensure Fast Boot is off.
Then re-start phone.
Now , Although I did end up like that, I'm sure it didnt fix the problem immediatley following me disabling those options.
All in all there is definatley something screwing up the G-Sensor, which is seemingly fixable/can be disabled. Its just finding out what it is/how you do it!
Slim
I completely agree on you mate. The question is what.
My subconscious is telling me that it has something to do with the live wallpapers but I have no proof. It's just a stupid hunch, but it wouldn't be my first stupid hunch and I was correct so...
anyway, I've just red this...you guys might want to try and do it.

"I just called my vendor, to complain about the auto rotation issue, and here's the step to fix, which worked for me.
Restart the phone, and go to safe mode (restart, and once you see the HTC logo, long press the volume down button), it'll restart again and go into safe mode.
Go to Settings, Display & gestures, G-Sensor Calibration, then calibrate, make sure to put the back of the phone on a level surface, this time, it shows calibration complete not aborted when I did it before in the normal mode.
Restarted the phone and it works fine now.
Thanks,
Mohamed El-Ghazaly"
when in safe mode, I would attempt everything from a "kill all tasks" in device manager to enabling and disabling auto-rotate in display settings.
Good luck guys.

For what its worth I've no issues and have tried to recreate this as I consider whether to return the phone due to screen flicker. Panasonic Gsensor calibrates fine and Elixir gives steady accurate sensor feedback.

I have HTC 3 finger gestures off (except one middle one and a v-sign for launching a flagship product with so many issues.)

HTC One X Screen won't turn on, touchscreen still work???

I have been using the HOX for over 2 months now but this morning my phone display suddenly doesn't turn on even the backlight key still on and touchscreen still work ( when I sweep my finger up the unlock sound still play, and I can even adjust the volume of the phone, etc... ) I have no ideas if this is a software or hardware problem and how to solve it, I'm still on Stock Rom, Stock Kernel,... Please help me
try to reboot pressing power button for 10 seconds, if it'll not work, it can be hardware problem, as i understood you haven't unlocked it, so you can send it to htc and they will repair it, or if you can, you can change it by yourself,
have you tried starting in bootloader and factory resetting?

Hardware fault for sure.
Same Problem
Hey, ive been using my international HTC One X for about two months too now and there have been no problems. ever since the update to 4.0.3 ive been facing exactly the same problem. The screen does not turn on a lot of the time but the touch is active. Have you found any solution to it?
It would be great if you could help me out.

I have the same problem now. Using it completely stock, the screen doesn't turn on. Well.... Except for the times I visit the Vodafone shop to get it fixed....
Their first reaction was a defect in the screen, so they ordered a new one. I brought it yesterday again and it is now in for repair.
I don't know if this will solve the problem. How did they fix yours?

hey guys
I had this problem a month ago, i know its frustrating.
anyway the only solution is factory rest from boot loader and flash RUU (worked for me)
the first time i had it, i did a factory reset, all my pics music were gone, phone went back to normal( stock, locked)
after a day the problem appeared again, second rest.
flashed RUU and the problem is gone. thanks god i have been using my HOX about a month science that problem and every thing is working great.
im sure its a software issue and I recommend every one to back up their files(pics, music)
just flash RUU and good luck
Lol, exactly the issue I had recently had with mine. Sent it backto htc, let's see what they would do about it.

My colleque has the same issue with his One X.
It started with suddenly everything on his screen looking "zoomed in", so everything double size, looking ugly as a mofo, and not usable. After locking the sceen and unlocking again, it was fine.
Monday suddenly also screen didn't want to turn on anymore. Did the hard reboot for him, and it worked again... Untill he locked his screen and wanted to unlock, same issue.
Also, that time when doing the hard reboot, screen didn't turn on at all. Did another one, and worked again.
He's now sent it in for repair, this definately sounds like ahrdware issue, even full reset through bootloader didn't help.

I have the same problem right now.
It started last week when I was using Flipboard and suddenly everything started zooming in and stuff (same as mhulsegge above). It was resolved by locking my screen and unlocking it.
Last night, i've been getting the black screen when I try to unlock my phone. The touchscreen still works but the screen is just blank. It turns on if I keep locking and unlocking, but it's getting annoying.
My phone is an international One X (duh) bought in Hong Kong and I'm currently living in Canada so it would not be possible to send it back for repairs. Plus my phone is rooted and I am currently using the latest MIUI ROM (2.9.21). I have been using an app called "Sleep" which tracks your sleeping patterns. It requires you to place your screen face down on your bed when you sleep and the accelerometer will track your sleeping patterns and wake you up at the most optimal time. I assume that for the accelerometer to work the screen has to be on, so I am wondering if this can be a screen malfunction (overheat or overuse) problem since the screen has been on for so long (every night when i sleep for around a month).
Since sending it back is out of the question for me because of where I am living right now and I have voided my warranty, I am downloading other ROMs as we speak and seeing if it is a problem with my ROM. I will keep you guys posted.
-edit- I have tried factory reset and reinstalling my ROM (with a full wipe). Still doesn't work.
It´s probably not your rom since I use CM10 hand have the same problem and others have even been running stock and had this problem. The only one who seems to have solved this (at least in this thread) flashed RUU, so guess I´ll go try that now...
Would be great to hear if anyone else has solved it, and how!
edit: This has to be a hardware problem, if I push on the screen it starts working! Its like something is loose, and when i press on the screen it gets connected again.

Good tip, but I tried a gentle two-fingered push (zoom pinch) and the backlight turned itself on with very little pressure, certainly not enough to flex the screen. I believe that it is a state issue related to zoom, but will try again and report if the issue returns.
Screen black after replacement lcd display unit
Hi,
My HOX touchscreen was broken, the touch and everything was still working. I ordered a replacement lcd display Unit and replaced the complete display and touch. After replacement the screen is completely black but the phone still works. The touch buttons on the bottom still work and i can use the volume buttons. I replaced the lcd display unit very carefully and i am sure nothing is broken etc. So the touch is working but the screen is black. I tried 2 display units and both show me a black screen.
Does anyone know how to solve this problem? Did i forget to do something during the replacement?
Please, i need some help with this issue.
OneX has too much issue with Screen . WTF with HTC?

GSM Galaxy Nexus stuck rebooting

Hello everyone! I own a Galaxy Nexus that's running one of the Cyanogenmod 4.4 snapshots. While watching a youtube video my phone froze up and shut itself off. I rebooted and after a few moments the same thing happened. When I power up my phone one of two things happen. It either reboots while booting and automatically attempts to boot again or it manages to turn on for a short while and then turns itself off.
I believed the issue was a battery or hardware one at first but after leaving my phone booted in recovery for half an hour with no ill effects I think something else might be up. What do you guys think is the best course of action? The only thing I've done is a factory reset that has done nothing.
Anyone?

Factory Reset and reflash the rom. If that doesn't work try flashing another rom like Vanir. If your phone still shuts off...well unfortunately this may be a hardware related issue, nothing you can do if that's the case. Unless it's your battery which I highly doubt.
I think it's the same thing that happened to me a year ago, check this out:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-nexus/help/bricked-phone-t2306672
for me it was a hw related problem, i had to send the phone back to assistance and have it repaired (it was still under warranty).
Good luck :good:
Thank you all for your ideas. I'll report back my findings later today.
Same problem over here. Tried a lot of roms (custom and stock from Google page), took it to assistance (no warranty though) was told is a hardware issue. Since replacing the mainboard its the same price as a new phone... well you know.
But a curios thing happened: tried to flash the Ubuntu Touch rom, same problem (reboots at Ubuntu start screen) and the Firefox-OS, that one worked (considering it's limitations obviously)!

Cannot turn on wifi or bluetooth

Just got a P600 4 days ago. Worked great till this morning. Turned it on and wifi was turned off. Tried to turn it on and it keeps sliding back to off position. The same for blue tooth. Tried a regular reset and factory reset. Neither helped. Couldn't find anything in the forums about this specific issue. Don't know what else to do.
Did you install anything? Root? What have you done to the device since you got it?

Hi,
Did you find what the problem was in the end?
I am experiencing the same problem since one month now (12 June). The wifi doesn't switch on neither the bluetooth. The "led" remains light green forever...
I addressed the problem to the local customer support service (Italy) and got the response that they cannot do anything because my device was bought in US, neither if I paid them.
Since then I have rooted the device,
I did factory reset
Rooted the device
Erased some files that are suppose to solve the same problem in S4
Tried flashing various mods
removed and repluged the battery
Nothing helped.
I don't believe that it is a hardware problem as it occured all of a sudden without any reason (hitting or damaging the device). Unfortunately I am totally ignorant on android. Right now I am looking for a way to undestand at least if this is a hardware problem in order to give up and go buy a Ipad (at least you can pay them for fixing their own devices).....
In any case thanks in advance for any feedback you may have

I sent my P600 in about 3 weeks ago. According to the reciept that was sent back with it, they replaced the wifi / bluetooth component. It came back with all my data and accounts still set up on it so i do not think its a software issue. They didnt charge me for the repair but im in the US.
Hello guys,
Few weeks ago I started having the same issue. If I turned my wifi off for any reason whatsoever, I wasn't able to turn it on again. I searched a bunch of forums with people trying to figure out how to solve that same problem, but no real solution...well... there is the obvious one, sending the device to guarantee. Unfortunatly, in my case, that wasn't an option, so I decided to start some experiments of my own.
I was able to find a workaround, it's not a solution since the problem will appear again given the same circunstances.
Keep in mind that this worked for me, but I cannot tell for sure if it will work for you. Anyway, if you have this problem and guarantee it's not a option I would give it a try before starting to think about opening the device or even replace the rom.
The workaround is really simple:
1 - Go to the Connections menu in Settings (where you turn on/off the wifi, bluetooth, etc);
2 - Turn on Flight mode;
3 - Turn on Wifi/Bluetooth (depending on your problem, apparently they both seem to happen);
4 - Turn off Flight mode.
And it's done. As I said before, this works for me and I can't guarantee that it WILL work for you.
