Transferring Visual Voicemail to New Android phone - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

I was using samsung note 4 before and I just got S8+.
I am trying to transfer the visual voicemail records for 2 years period. I know I can save it one by one as AMR file format. Is there anyway that I can transfer as a whole ? If I transfer as AMR one by one, is there anyway to restore it in the new device?

If you make sure you install and use the Tmo voice mail app, it will automatically transfer all your voice mail to new phone once it syncs.

Where's Visual Voicemail

We saw the demo, but...
Does anyone know anything about it?
Is it definitely only for Google Voice?
Availability?
All the nexus has is the necessary api hooks. It's up to the carriers to make use of said apis and release the apps.
Verizon has one in the android market, but it costs an additional $2.99/mth.

T-Mobile also has a visual voicemail app, but it will charge you a monthly fee as well. I use Voice, works great.
Google Voice? Are your voicemails showing up in your Phone app/Call log? Based on the Oct intro in October, it looked like it was supposed to (with Google Voice).
I had a VM left the other day to my Google Voice number and it shows up in the GV app itself, but not my Phone app/Call log. How about you?

Same. Funny that Google built the visual voicemail API then didn't even use it themselves .

I don't think I've received a voicemail since I've had a GNex to be honest. If I have I haven't seen it in the call log. Didn't know it was suppose to.
What I did notice is that it started showing missed calls under the call log and Google voice when a VM was left.

I don't think the GV app has been updated for ICS yet. Once it has it should use the new API.
AT&T VVM.apk
I attached AT&T Visual Voicemail .apk for anyone with knowledge or skills to advise if it is even possible to get it to work for GSM GNxS on AT&T with a Skyrocket provisioned SIM for LTE 4G data that includes Visual Voicemail feature in plan already.

Google Voice
Has anyone gotten google voice to take the voice mail on Verizon? When I set it up GV told me that my carrier didn't support that feature
Dial *71###-###-#### (replace the pounds with your Google voice number) it will act like its making a call for a second or two then stop. Also make sure you have Google voice selected in your system settings.

Even with correct permissions it returns package can not be installed. Side load attempted via Root Explore. Not tried changing build.prop device id and such to spoof Skyrocket. Maybe we need additional files or VVM is part of the Skyrocket's phone dialer or some bloatware. I'm just fishing and really have no idea :/
Google voice definitely works on the GNex verizon. I restored mine from my last phone so i didnt need to do the setup but it should do a wizard when you start it to get it working.

It's not called Visual Voicemail. It's part of your AT&T messaging app. Not messaging but AT&T Messaging.

Visual voicemail is free..meaning you can see the list of your voicemails and listen to them just like on an iPhone. Visual voicemail with text is 3.99..this is the one that transcribes it to text. Just use Google voice...It does the same thing and is free.

I don't like that my phone vibrates it has no text talk anymore. How do I switch my native text message To be the default?
I switched to the S3 from an iPhone and I was looking for the same thing. I downloaded the Visual Voicemail app but it wouldn't connect. I got on a chat with an ATT rep and they told me it wouldn't cost extra but I would have to switch to a different data plan that includes visual voicemail.... Which meant I would have to leave my unlimited plan that we were grandfathered in on. So basically they are using it as a way to get people off of the unlimited plan as well.
My response was, "hahahaha, i'll deal with it or sign up for youmail"

I've been down this road with at&t so many times on this issue. It's an easy fix but most at their support don't know how.
Here's a much better solution. Just read the Thread below to fix the installation problem.
It's a must have product.
Switch to Google Voice. Visual Voicemail on steroids. It's a must have product.
If interested go to Google Voice and set up an account, as then download from the Market.
However, please read the thread provided below before installation. There's a known problem setting up the call forwarding numbers that has nothing to do with the GS3 and it's not a big deal.
Here's the easiest solution.
To get Google voice to work you must first download it from the play store. Then run it. It will tell you that it can't change your forward numbers. The go on your browser and goto the Google voice website (make sure you hit menu and request desktop site). On the site look for settings. (Somewhere in the top right. Then choose to set up your phone. Choose your carrier and it will give you a number to call. That number will change your forwarding numbers for you. Then in the voice app change settings to show voicemail in call log.

So doing it this way will allow me to see voicemails in the call log on my s3? I thought I read that it wasn't possible because of touchwiz framework?

I have the same problem.
CC
All I could find on the subject
Recent HTC phones include a special version of AT&T Visual voicemail. As a result it's no long possible to download and install the standard vvm app from the play store. I've installed ARHD and would like to figure out how to get AT&T visual voicemail on this particular rom.
I've tried extracting the visual voicemail apk from my stock nandroid, but can't get it to work. I've installed it but the app doesn't appear with my other apps.
I can't post a link, but here's a copy paste of what I found on the at&t site regarding the m8 and visual voicemail.
Visual Voicemail for HTC Android smartphones
Starting in March 2014, all new 4G LTE HTC Android smartphone models will include a new, built-in Visual Voicemail application. The HTC One (M8) is the first Android smartphone to introduce the new HTC Visual Voicemail app.
Important Note
If you have an earlier model HTC Android smartphone and use the AT&T Visual Voicemail downloadable app for Android, your experience won't change. Follow the link above to view a list of supported smartphones.
Key features and benefits of the new HTC Visual Voicemail app for Android smartphones include:
New Message Counter displayed on the Visual Voicemail app icon, so you can quickly check if you have new messages from your smartphone app tray.
Text Transcription you can turn on and off from within the app, so you can read your voicemail messages discreetly on your smartphone.
Visual Voicemail icon button built into the app tray and dialer for quick access to your Visual Voicemail message inbox.
With Visual Voicemail on your HTC Android smartphone, you can:
View a list of your voicemail messages directly on your smartphone and play them in any order you choose, so you can get to your most important messages first.
Save messages to your smartphone's memory or memory card, so you can keep your important messages for as long as you want.
Reply to messages by returning the call or sending a text message.
Change your voicemail password and manage greetings directly on your smartphone.
Requirements to use Visual Voicemail
In order to use the Visual Voicemail app on your 4G LTE HTC Android smartphone:
Your smartphone data plan must include Visual Voicemail.
Your smartphone needs a cellular data connection. You can't set up or manage your Visual Voicemail over a Wi-Fi-only connection on your smartphone.

Compatible With ARHD 11.1?
Can this be flashed on top of ARHD 11.1? And will it add VVM to the phone section as well as an App? Has anyone done this?
This will only install the app if it works,it will not add anything other than that. I will not add the dialer functionality as are seen with new att roms.

Has anyone actually gotten this to connect with AT&T's voice mail system? I am running the DevEd ROM (pure stock outside of root) and while the app runs, and goes through the motions, it never gets the confirmation it needs to finalize setup.
I would love to get this back, as it's the only thing that I "miss" from the carrier firmware.

I havent had much luck with it on AOSP, or the dev, so I said the heck with it and started using google voice. It works just as good, if not better.
There's a new apk that was released on 11/6/14. Does anyone have it to post up?
This version of Visual Voicemail (2.8.2.21) doesn't seem to integrate with "Messages" the way the ROM version did, with speech-to-text. Am I missing something?
Also, is there a version that will work even when connected also to Wi-Fi in addition to mobile data? My main problem is that when a message is left while I'm on WiFi, the stock VVM chews through the battery fast trying to download but failing.

For devices that are compatible with AT&T Visual VoiceMail see http://www.att.com/esupport/article.jsp?sid=KB414957&cv=820#fbid=APh8mY9oZLY
AT&T had discontinued the speech-to-text service. It used to be a premium add-on, a few bucks a month. I had it as a free trial which lasted much longer than 30 days, and it was interesting and amusing to have - but it was NOT very accurate. So I wasn't terribly bummed when it was discontinued. BUT, the new version has speech to text as a tick off box in settings. Tick that box, reboot, and it works again!
Definitely will only work when connected to cellular data. There will be a popup that says that, if you are on wifi only.
deleted.
Thanks all, works like a charm on my nexus 5.

I found that I had to have the voicemail pin active for it to work. I think the app waits for the pin to be entered before doing whatever handshake or does. Put your password security back on for voicemail, try again and see if it works.

I did that, repeatedly... I finally just gave up. The only one who leaves voice mail anymore is my mother and telemarketing scum. Everyone else sends texts.
AT&T released an updated .apk on 2/12/15 and it replaced 2.10.1.27. Not sure of the version number as It appears to be hidden on the play store. If anyone has the latest version or is running a compatible device, could you please use an .apk extractor and send it up? I would greatly appreciate it!
Ridiculous that AT&T keeps restricting this app to BYOD that weren't purchased through AT&T.

Visual Voicemail app not compatible

To my surprise, the AT&T Visual Voicemail app can't be downloaded from the Play Store (a search for it won't find it). The att.com website does not show the Note 4 in its list of compatible phones (it does show a Note 3).

I've been on the phone with AT&T for an hour. The preloaded Voicemail App on the Note 4 will not let me complete setup. I follow the instructions and it fails to set up and prompts me to try again. Left with not choice but to contact carrier. They've removed into my phone in an attempt to set it up and it fails for them too. Of all the apps I have I love my visual voicemail the most.

if you are so inclined you could always use Google voice for visual voicemail.. that's what I do.. I like transcribed emails for my voicemails.. also comes with a link to the audio file so you can play it back.
And the best part.. you don't necessarily need a third party app.

I don't know if you are still having this problem, but I could not complete setup because I had another app that screens calls installed: Truecaller. I uninstalled it and that allowed Visual Voicemail to finish setup.

AT&T Tech support is so dumb and they can't figure it out. AT&T is claiming the app is not compatible anymore - after 2 hours of Troubleshooting LOL.

Texting while traveling overseas

Am a small business owner and need to be able to access incoming and outgoing texts while on a cruise. WhatsApp seems to require the other party to be signed up which is not always the case. Is there another way around this besides buying the high-priced cellular plan? For example can I forward my phone to Google Voice and receive messages this way over WiFi?

What I can suggest is one of those free voip services that give you an actual phone number. In Canada we have Fongo, lets you receive and send texts to and from your assigned number as long as you have a working Internet connection. There has to be something similar where you are. You can even probably sign up for Fongo where you are, you'll just have a Canadian area code.

You already have 3 things:
- smartphone
- Google Voice
- Hangouts
You're missing just this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.hangoutsdialer
after that you'll have unlimited texting, SMS, incoming and outgoing calls, voice mail - and all those absolutely free...
p.s. after installing go into the above mentioned application setting menu and check two check-boxes for incoming calls and SMS..
