I believe A520W is a canadian variant.
Only difference I can find is the frequencies used for LTE (4G)
SM-A520W : 700, 750, 800, 850, 1700, 1800, 1900, 2100, 2600 MHz
SM-A520F : 700, 900, 1700, 1800, 2100 2300, 2500, 2600 MHz

Custom ROM
So then I can use a A520F custom ROM no problem? Having a hard time ensuring I use the correct custom ROM. Also sucks that there's no LineageOS for me yet...

Yes, I think so. At least you could try since modem part is not included in twrp flashable roms. Only system and kernel.
Just make sure you do a backup in recovery before flash so you can easily go back, in case of boot problems or bugs.

Thank you.
Okay. Thanks for the support. I will try that out

Hi did you end up trying it out?

Marshmallow vs Nougat
Decided I want to try out Nougat instead. Hopefully I am not disappointed.

Hey Dynamo,
How did you get Nougat to install on your phone?
I tried through Odin but it wouldn't start (due to an error) because I'm trying to install an A520F firmware on a A520W device.
Thanks

The modem is different, Odin won't let you flash it. Even if it did, your phone would either be bricked or unable to use mobile networks. To make custom roms compatible, it's probably enough to create a modem patch which you flash after the rom.

It's been awhile...

Kinda veered off doing other things in life. Decided to give some attention to my phone again. Currently I am rooted on the stock Marshmallow 6.0.1 Wondering if I should go with a custom ROM? Xposed Framework seems like a risky route to take...Just wondering the best way to get the most difference and reach the potential of my phone but it seems like resources are a little limited? But I could be wrong.

Well... I broke my new Galaxy A5 2017 phone (3 weeks used),the digit amoled screen is kaput ! but phone still working. .... (keep calm)
Trying to replace the digit screen ... sellers want to sell the SM-A520W only witch is the phone model screen , but all other digit screen for A5 Galaxy like SM-520F , SM-520S or SM-520D ... etc , are much cheaper and looks like to be the same ... ("W" is for .... What? ... I'am canadian ...so What ? )
No idea why that specific canadian 2017 Samsung A5 Galaxy stupid fu ... ing screen would be different than others ? no mater the frequencies used on carrier , it should not affect the digit screen ... as I know ... Am I right ?
( I know we are not Trump's fans here in Canada !!! could it be the reason ? ahahaha ! )

has anyone actually flashed a a520F firmwire on a520W?
aren't they the exact same phone?

If anybody has please let me know. i am running Nougat, I would love to try lineage os. I started out with the htc dream (Canadian Variant) known as the G1 running Cyanogen Rom back in the day. This is the first time i cant seem to install Lineage OS. I have an A520W Canadian Variant

The language police require consumer labeling and docs be bi-lingual (English & French); thus, the digitizer screen type "W" is bilingual, err, at least the stickers on the boxes and docs are.

Hello everybody, I too have the same question. New A5 SM520W (2017) owner. Out of the box this week, it is android 7.0 and samy experience 8.1. Security, build dates, were 2018-JAN. It immediately took one OTA, resulting in security bumping to 2018-MAR-01 and baseband bumped to "C1" from "B2".
I'd like to get to lineage OS 15.1 sooner vs. later.
TWRP has recovery ROM for "Samsung Galaxy A5 2016 (Exynos)." Does this work with/on A520W 2017?
Cheers to all,
/S

I have been running lineage OS 14.1 20180418 image on my SM-A520W for one week with great success. The hard part was finding a working TWRP for the A5 2017 and then getting that twrp.img to stay installed and not be over-written.
If you line your trwp ducks up, then go for it!

I switched from Stockrom mini to LineageOS 14.1. Loving it so far! I really feel like Samsung's ROMs are heavy if that makes any sense. But hopefully Oreo (Hadesrom) will be a bit different.

how much would a screen for the SM- A520w cost?

Hello, I'm from Peru and I have the dual SIM version xt1710-06 Retla ... I do not know what happened, the phone stayed in the November patch and the OTAS that are in XDA with the December patch are not compatible. I read in Brazilian forums that for this phone the patches are different because it is dual SIM and that its official provider is Motorola and not a mobile operator. in the end all the variants work the same but it is for a specific region .. in Brazil they use the variant -07 in Europe it is -09 Asia I think it is -10 and china -11

It's XT1710-xx not XT1701-xx
You want XT1710-01.
That is the US Unlocked version, with unlockable bootloader.
I'm on Verizon, also.
The -06 is a dual SIM version with North American GSM LTE frequencies. It won't work with Verizon.
My Z2 Play from AT&T Mexico is single SIM and is a XT1710-06
My XT1710-06 is dual sim. Has TWRP 3.2.1-0 installed, yet I cannot get any of the lineage os 15.1 downloads to install. Always get a 255 error and even tried the, delete first to lines from that note pad file trick. No go. Any got an lineage 15 or 15.1 that is not in that g drive everyone is linking?

Is your TWRP a modified version, or is it all stock TWRP?
Sent from my Moto G4 Plus using XDA Labs
Thanks for the reply guys . I managed to install Lineage OS 15.1 by reflashing a different Twrp. Instead of using twrp-3.2.1-0.img again, another thread mentioned twrp-3.2.1-0-albus.img for installing LOS 15.1. Everything you guys posted was spot on. Keep up the awesome work and thanks again for the umpteenth time.

Does 6.1 support Treble?

[UPDATE]
Confirmed to support Treble by "ali ba".
Hello all,
I've read lots of conflicting news about the support status of Project Treble in Nokia 6 (2018),
Can anyone confirm the support or the lack of it once and for all?
Thanks.
Correct me if I'm wrong but every device launching with 8.0 has to support Treble does it not? I guess the problem lies with whether Nokia will provide the ability to unlock the bootloader. I'm not sure if it makes a difference that this is an Android One device in this respect.
Does anyone have an official firmware available for download? I have TA-1054, China version and it seems it has a custom firmware. Thank you.

You're absolutely right, the problem is the Chinese release was on Nougat, and nobody has yet ran the Treble flag test on the international version.. maybe because not so many hands got it yet... We'll wait..
According to the test app it does support Treble, but I'm not sure whether to trust it.
Came with an update out of the box and I didn't check the version before applying it (which would have made that clearer).

Is there a Europe version?

[Update]
Just noticed you actually did just that... Thanks.
I think this is an important topic that deserves it's own thread..
Would you care to start it?, also what models are sold in what markets?
That would be useful.
cheers.
Try to obtain the global firmware of TA-1054. I can provide you with the firmware.
I have two Nokia 6.1 devices. One is TA-1054 and the other is TA-1089. Both Global/International/Made in India version. I have the firmware files. But I doubt, you'll be able to flash them with the Stock recovery in your Chinese Variant. If you want the links, I'll provide you. And yes, Nokia 6.1 supports Treble. And I've recently flashed Android 11 GSI. Well, only issue was unlocking the boot loader to flash custom recovery. I never want to bootloader unlock any other Nokia phone anytime soon.
The TA-10xx naming determines the variant of the phone. The (4 + 64 GB) variant is TA-1089. The values change depending on the ram and storage size. Also newer models for the same phone we're released with Mediatek processors and Snapdragon for different markets. Just like Samsung does, sells the Exynos variant in Asia while selling the Snapdragon variant in US, UK, EUR, etc. Nokia also started doing this with their Nokia 5.1 and 5.3( if I recall correctly, not sure). So those phones have multiple variants. The TA-10XX naming scheme is quite similar to RM-xxx scheme followed by Nokia in the past, when Nokia was owned by Nokia and not HMD. In fact, their shift to TA-XXXX naming suggest that they belong to the family of Android/HMD owned Nokia and not the old Nokia. Even the 3310 (The beast) and 8110 4G have TA-XXXX product code instead of the RM-XXX. It's like a product code which can determine the RAM, Storage and Chipset as well as Region of the device.
So to flash Android R, TWRP or TWRP based custom recovery is required. Then flash any Android 10 Custom ROM with Treble support. Also flash dm no verify.zip with the ROM. Reboot to set up device. Don't add any Google account and password, etc. Then again boot into TWRP, changed to Image mode from zip mode in Install. Flash the system.img from Android 11 GSI.
Then reboot.
Follow the guidelines to unlock your bootloader

Newer firmware doesn't necessarily make the device faster. There isn't much you can do about a 9 yr old device.
Since the T800/T805 are not Treble compliant, the only way to run newer firmware is via custom ROMs, although I doubt development on devices this old gets much attention.
So what I understand is there is not much to do with the tablet to make it a little bit faster.
What about root or that is a different matter?
And last question about

Root is a different matter. In most cases, you can flash the Magisk app through TWRP, and Magisk will automatically detect the right way to root your device. If TWRP is not available, you'll need to patch the AP firmware file in Magisk, then flash to your device with Odin.

Would you be able to suggest which old tablets could make sense to flash semi-current roms onto? I tried to bring back some old device to reuse for home assistant display, but it's too old... Been thinking about these samsungs, but from this thread it's also a bit too old.

imho it's correct that a custom ROM doesn't necessarily make old devices faster, but I experienced it such that at least they don't get slower (except I9195).
Recently I was allowed to support development of Android 19=LOS 20 for my T325 and it runs like hell.
P600 and P900 on LOS14, T810 on LOS19 all using daily in different rooms.
I9195 on LOS18 (that is really laggy) N910F on LOS18 as backup devices.

Custom ROMs?

Just wondering if anybody can help. Ive just bought an s20 plus, 2nd hand of course, & am considering putting TWRP or another recovery on. But, what Im asking is are there any custom roms, bearing in mind I have installed the latest fw android 13? I see BeyondRom, which I have tried before on s10 (& is very good btw) & Lineage 19.1, which I doubt would work on newer fw. Is there anything else out there, LOS based or AOSP?
Thanks for any response

Hi, you can also try Pixel Experience.
Thanks for this. So the only alternative to stock is a gsi ROM? Never seen this before, but I can understand if maybe its not a popular device
