Got a new Canadian Virgin Mobile A5 today, and noticed there was no FM Radio app. I installed the "nextradio" app on the phone, and it pulled up that that phone either does not have a tuner, or that the tuner is disabled.
Anyone else running into this with other carriers?
I just got the Bell version. There were no earbuds and there is no FM app. I don't know if the Canadian version even has a tuner.
it doesnt and also its not including headphones!
The ear buds are used as an antenna. I got my A5 from Amazon and it had the earbuds.
I doubt they removed any hardware from the board to disable fm radio. It's most likely done in kernel or something

My Canadian phone didn't come with earphones either. The hardware still works though. If you install a A520F rom, the FM app is there and all you need is your own earphones to use it.
Only the international variant has earbuds. And yes the a5 2017 canada variant has built in fm radio as do most phones... the only reason it disable is because it easy money for telephone industry.. why give the people free radio when you can charge them to get data to stream music... smh I too have the same problem with telus
Im with videotron myself. I haven't tried the radio yet because I never had any use for it, but none if my previous videotron phones had an enabled radio, so I doubt this one would. Though I never used the radio, I always thought it would be nice as an option. Especially in an emergency situation where data might not be available I'd appreciate at least having access to the local news.

I have a Koodo A5 2017. Am I able to flash an official A520F firmware or does it have to be a custom room?
I have a custom rom installed. i don't know if the official one will work or not.

I have an A5 2017 A520W with Bell Mobility and my radio works. I am running a custom ROM but that does not make a difference because it is in the hardware. By some ear buds, the antenna is in the wires.

Flash an European ROM, and get some headphones.
can you flash a custom rom on a 520w phone?
I flash a european 520f rom... new zeland rom at first...
sadly I think it was because it was a newer update (the january one which canada didn't get yet) but the flash nearly crapped out my phone- lost knox because of it.... strange to lose knox over the same firmwire!? I think its because the phone reads as 520W and it sees a non W firmwire.
flashed a UK rom from the same novemeber update..
can confirm... canada firmwire blocks fm radio. it works fine on the UK rom

no nessicary to route... you can use a website like this one https://updato.com/firmware-archive-select-model?q=Galaxy+A5&exact=1&r=H3G&v=&rpp=50
no need to root but watch that you WILL screw your knox... making things like samsung pay not work

From what I see, Knox is mostly for corporate managed systems security, for supporting warranty status (ie. mess with Knox and warranty is void) and for Samsung Pay, so not very important to most users - but I confess I know very little about it.
I've since run into more Knox info - you folks probably know all this, but it was useful to me:..for example...
"Knox is a very annoying and troublesome feature to most Samsung users who like to tamper/make heavy customizations to their device. “Tripping” the Knox counter will VOID your warranty, thus rendering your device useless to Samsung’s warranty center. The Knox counter shows informative and detailed information to Samsung’s employees. They use their systems to detect whether or not your device has been tampered with, past Samsung’s warranty."
Another suggestion I read was to use a SIM from a carrier that allows FM radio on the A5; some articles suggest that Bell allows it for some phones. Would resting the phone and starting up with Bell SIM work?
any suggestions which a520f firmware version to use or which one was the most reliable on that list? Reason I'm asking is that I have read that some of the later versions of the firmware messed a few things up including rapidly draining the battery etc. I just want my fm tuner to work in my Canadian A5 2017 so don't mind using A520F ROM

So I just tried to setup my Samsung Pay and it says this device is not compatible??!!
I have unlocked model on Sprint.
Just wondering if anyone else has similar issue to know it will self-resolve over time maybe or if something is funky here.
Very annoying as I used it a ton on my S7....
I have no issues using it on my unlocked S9.

I have never used Samsung Pay but Google Pay is working fine on my S9 :good:
I set it all up and went to add my cards but all of them were incompatible. My banks prefer to use their own contactless payment methods or Google Pay.

I"m having the same issue to. Anytime I try to use it, it says to update it. The samsung pay in the galaxy app store is updated. So uninstalling that one and installing the one from the play store says it's incompatible with my phone.
But, it sounds like Samsung is aware of the issue and will be updating the galaxy apps version soon

https://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyS9/comments/848mxn/samsung_pay_incompatible/dvpgqv7/
So I flashed my phone to the sprint FW and that one seems to work fine so must indeed be something with the US unlocked ones maybe on some providers or how it was updated etc.
I just tested mine and it works on the unlocked version.
For those that are working are you US based or intl?
I'm also wondering if it's app ver related, carrier related for unlocked or what lol.
I now have another issue with VM not working so am torn what FW I even want to run now lol. Downfall of early adopter I guess hah
Mine works fine with tmobile
Mine does not work. US unlocked snapdragon model. Keeps telling me to update app but there is not an update.
On T-Mobile US, and it works fine here. I didn't try it until after the day 1 update they pushed yesterday, so maybe that was the key?

I've been having the same issues on my USA unlocked S9+, but there's an update in the Galaxy app store today that finally gets me past that "need an update" screen. Go check!!
There is an update for Samsung pay that came out last night and now it works for me. I updated through the Galaxy app store.
When I use it my phone get stuck in wireless charging mode and to remove it igot reboot phone
I have the S8 Plus Hong Kong variant. Samsung Pay only worked for Hong Kong based banks. Uninstalled the app then installed the latest version on Play Store. Works fine now so Samsung did update the app. I'm pretty sure whoever you bank with needs to have a processing application which is compatible with Samsung Pay.
Just received received a firmware update for my S9 via OTA.
Here is what levels it took me to. Not sure what all is included, but my FM radio now works.

Hi Folks! I just got the update on my G960U1 and couldn´t notice too much of a change. I bought it in the US and I live in Brazil and the so called FM radio does not exist. Should it be available?
Can I add one more question here? If I flash SM-g9600 (128gb S9 Brazil ZTO ROM) into my SM-g960u device (US unlocked 64gb), should it work without issues?
thanks for helping a new member!

It wasn't an OS update of sorts, it was a 3 month old security update and the below notes from Samsung.
"The stability of Face unlock has been improved."
"The stability of Camera has been improved."
I see that they have supposedly also enabled the FM tuner on unlocked phones.

Has anyone flashed this on the HK/Latin America dual SIM snapdragon G9600/DS models? I'm thinking of flashing but i haven't done this before. So, hoping for some data points from experts before I do this myself since I'm concerned I might do something wrong and brick my phone :|

Thanks for the info.
I am using the Tmobile Cousin S9 of your device
but on Metro PCS and that ARF4 Update is in my
Notifications whether I want it there or not (lol).
Before I install it I am trying to find out IF there is any overheating or warming or other issues.
I sm not a Dev but wonder why if it's security patches is the file so huge at .75 GIG ?
Apparently they had to re-write most of the Code ?
On my previous Samsung Factory Unlocked 850 M each update increased the size of the Operating System and had less free RAM and a bit more heat and less efficient because the battery and CPU was busy just running the larger OS.
However the S9 and SOC is in another league and the battery monitor in the 'maintenance' section is very efficient at putting Apps to sleep until you need them then they go back on automatically when used..
Still - why is this file .75Gig ?
Has it improved the phone operation?
Is it running background security scans that we can't touch that warm up the phone and use more battery OR is it efficient ?

I have not noticed any real difference in performance in the phone.
I have never noticed a heat issue while charging, but then I use a wireless charger on my bed side table.
I would just install it. Your security will be up to date then.

I wonder if NextRadio is a requirement for using the newly-enabled FM radio chip? I'd rather not grant yet another application my GPS location and the ability to use the (say what?!) microphone. It seems, now that the FM hardware chip is being used, rather than streaming FM radio over my data plan, that some of NextRadio's permissions are over-reaching. Some older HTC phones (HTC Incredible S & HTC Aria) had a simple dedicated app for the FM radio.
I completely understand the requirement for the headphone jack serving as the FM radio antenna. That's been required since Sony Walkmans in the 1980s... Probably earlier!
Thanks in advance for any tips you have, or applications you can suggest..
There are many FM radio APPs out there.
I only used next radio cause it was free and worked.
You don't actually have to use headphones either. If I want to play through the speaker I use an old headphone that I cut the first foot off of for an antenna.
Hi
I have a SM-965O (Snapdragon, Latin America) that is going to be use in Europe (Spain) , I know frequency bands should no be a problem BUT my question is regard Samsung PAY and Android Pay
Samsung Pay i think it needs to have the same country CSC as the SIM in this case it will not be possible as there is no firmware i can flash for this phone with a European CSC what about Google pay? can it be used with a different CSC than the SIM?
Thanks for you comments

If you unlock your bootloader, Samsung pay is gone. Knox is tripped and renders Samsung pay useless. But Android pay should work regardless as long as you have magisk and use magiskhide.

Hi Mate
Thanks for the reply , the bootloader I think is unlocked , but anyhow i was not planning to unlock it , the phone is not rooted so knox is intact.
The S9+( latin American version) is going to be use in Europe , before that happens i want to see what my option are with Samsung and Android pay are.
I know Samsung pay is very picky it need to match Country CSC with SIM CSC , that option to me is off the table as there is no european firmware for this phone , not sure about android pay , is that picky too?
I do not want to root the phone at the moment..... so just checking with you guys , any advice is welcome.

the thing that bugs me about their issue with root is that im absolutely certain that there is a way to allow root to certain parts of the OS and like super super SUPERSU for the core stuff. So if they had an alternative routing method for the sensitive stuff like SPay and SHealth and secure folder and allow for the customization that most root users want in the first place

I agree with you , there are parts of the OS that should be restricted or protected from any manipulation , but not to the extreme to make you feel like an outlaw and make you an outcast from your own device if you want to "change it" or customize it
They are taking all the fun away from android ( those very first years) , open source not quite any more, I do not like apples philosophy and that was one of the main reason why i use android..... now days is hard to tell the difference
Hi guys, nice to greet you, I hope you are doing well despite the pandemic.
I have a very big doubt, I bought a Galaxy S20 5G sprint unlocked model SM-G981U.
The first doubt, it is possible to install a free firmware without operators (sprint) in this model since it is annoying that every time I restart the OMADM application appears.
The second question I have is about the front speaker, I made a comparison with a galaxy s10 and the galaxy s10 has 15-20% more volume in the front speaker and sounds more defined, someone knows if this is the same or is my speaker is faulty.

If you have an unlocked model, I think you are free to install any kind of firmware. But, I think you might lose your warranty. Contact your carrier to see if there is any problem. I used to have a Galaxy S10 AT&T, I contacted them and they said I'd lose my warranty if I installed a different firmware.

he doesnt have an unlocked model.. all usa models are bl locked and cant be unlocked without paid service..
he can flash U1 firmware but this will not get rid of omadm as this is necessary for activation on sprint network.. removingvit can cause device not to connect to network at all preventing him from using any cell services such as data or calls..
and of course if bl is unlocked and you use custom firmware it will void warranty.. this is the case on any samsung device.

I don't need the guarantee since I live in South America I bought it in the USA because it was a snapdragon version, so the idea was to eliminate omadm, but if it is necessary even in South America, I don't see the need to change the firmware
I don't see the point in changing the firmware.

Hi, you can resolve it? I have the same problem with the same phone. Im in uruguay and i cant connect to net or Internet.
Hello.
Here's the back story. Bought my phone from Egypt unlocked s20 plus. Recently moved to canada and trying to get samsung pay to work. Downloaded the app from google play canada but it says that device is not supported. Downloaded it from APK mirror but it just says it needs to update, even though this is the last version.
I was told that getting the BTU or DBT CSC might fix this, since they come preinstalled with samsung pay.
First of all, can I do this by just flashing the firmware (not changing CSC)? Or do I need to change the CSC using samkey? I don't mind flashing first, if that didn't work then using samkey. But would rather go with the route that people think will work straight away.
I'll write all my device's info that I think might be needed to make this as complete as possible. Then I'll put some questions that are confusing me.
So to start this, I bought my phone from Egypt and I'm currently in Canada. Since it's a dual sim model, I have a Canadian SIM as my primary and Egyptian as my secondary. Currently, I'm getting wifi calling but not VoLTE. Reading a bit on this, some people are saying that my network intentionally locked people out of this option if they didn't buy the phone from them. My network is Fido btw.
Model: SM-G985F/DS (4G)
Product Code: SM-G985FZADEGY
PDA: G985FXXU4BTIB
CSC: G985FOXM4BTID
Basebad: G985FXXU4BTI6
Bootloader: G985FXXU4BTIB
September Security Patch.
One thing I'd like to point out is typing "*#243203855#" in the dialer does nothing. Maybe it's because it's not supported? Or the fact that I have dual IMEI?
Questions:
1. Is there benefit of using DBT over BTU?
2. With my bootloader being BIT 4 (I think?), can I use samkey? When I checked it, it said that they only support BIT 1 and 2 on their website. I could be wrong.
3. Is it safe to purchase samkey credits off ebay?
4. Is samkey itself safe? It showed up as a trojen when I installed it. Could be a false positive? Downloaded from the official site btw.
5. Is flashing BTU enough for this to work or do I need to change the CSC?
6. Can I revert any changes that I've done to restore the device in its original state? If I change the CSC, can I revert it back to EGY?
7. Will I get normal OTA updates while I'm here in canada? This applies to both flashing and/or changing my CSC?
8. I would love to keep wifi calling, call HD, and hopefully get VoLTE (but I understand that this might work). And obviously the main reason for this whole thing is getting Samsung Pay to work.
Sorry if these questions might be obvious, I'm really trying to understand this so I don't ruin anything and don't regret anything.
If someone is willing to help me further, I would greatly appreciate it.
I am unsure about majority of the things you have question about, but one thing i know for sure - samsung pay on my s20+ was rarely working making me look stupid at the shops - since i switched to google pay all issues are gone and payment is going through everywhere

The MST function was disabled in 2019 for all the smartphones sold within the EU (at least) due to a new regulation regarding MST technology.
I don't know if it's working elsewhere.
Still, for me SPAY has been working flawlessly for over an year or two, never had any problem, with or without MST
