Bootloop still a problem?

I was looking into buying a new phone, something with an unlockable bootloader and semi easy to root. I came across the G4 and it looked pretty promising. I was most likely going to buy it then I found this issue with the bootloops. It seems like a fairly common problem with the early models of the phone. I was wondering if I were to purchase a G4 now if it would still have the same problem or it has since been fixed. I couldn't find any recently updated threads on the issue so I thought I'd come over to xda.

lg said its been fixed. but member here have reported bootloop in new ones as well.. and since the 505 where the ones beign bad.. that means that it takes like 7-8 months to show up.. so new phones.. we need to wait till they reach those 7-8 months

I just got the bootloop today.
It was the european model, which should have been better.

It doesn't matter whether your model was European. It all matters when the device was manufactured. What was your serial number? 505xxxx?

My phone was producted in septemmber 2015 does my phone will have bootloop ?

theres a 95% possibility it will..

oct 2015 is suposeldy good. Sept 2015 and earlier are highly prone to loop.
And hardware revision 1.0 is bootloop prone and 1.1 is again supposedly good also. But as raptor said 7 or 8 months seems to be the magic number.
Ive actually moved on to a diffrent device and pit my g4 up for fancy ocasions lol. Lg k7 real low specs but unlockable bootloader.

So this will be my first and last lg phone

i dont understand.. why i have 601, but on HW. 1.0 ?? makes no sense.. unless they wanted to get rid of all the 1.0 MB.

Thats weird. Mines a 1.1. Dont know the serial num but its 10 2015 so mines suposedly the first line that were good.

I can find a straigh answer where serial num is. If i go off dec num xxxxx508xxxxxxxxxx is the only 50 type number anywhere thats straight off my box and phone. Is that the proper way to read serial or is th 50 or 60 number somewhere else. Like i said im usind the dec as whole serial num

Welcome to the sinking boat. If your phone is still under warranty then go ahead and raise RMA with LG to have the motherboard replaced. The warranty is actually around 15 months. I bought mine from Amazon in Germany last July and my phone went into bootloop at the worst possible time when I had my flight in the morning and had holidays planned. Can you imagine how this messed up my plans... escalating this with LG to take responsibility but so far I'm only spending the phone for repair to one of LG approved repair centres in UK. I live in UK and European models should be fixed in the country you are in if there is repair centre.

i also have 505 s/n production date of may it still works like it did first day usually bootloop occurs after 9 to 10 months its already been an year n one month:good::good::fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed: i have H815 taiwanese model had a chat with one of LG technician today he says he hasnt yet seen this country's models to bootloop as of yet seen eur,sea and other carrier variants ...

See u guys say the serial is in your case 505 as the first 3 digits Every num on my box here it goes. Upc 528. Dec starts 528. Hex 357. Iccid 890. Rs. 171. These are the first 3 digits in every number on my phone Again how do u. determine the serial num.

use your imei.. you should see your serial number but on this page it doesnt say serial number.... they use another term for it. there...

Hopefully yours won't bootloop but somehow I wish that yours bootloop sooner than later before you run out of warranty. Also don't forget to back up your data constantly since when the bootloop hits you it usually hits you when you are the least prepared and when you need the phone the most....

Yes already using it as a second phone i have g3 too so basically that is where i store my inportant stuff ..its like told by members of xda some 503 or 505 serials are faulty n some arent there is also another guy here in xda he also had TWN varient same s/n no. N same production i pmed him to ask about bootloop his also didnt bootloop as of yet

Yes, if you want something similar to LG G4 go for the Moto X Pure, better specs, same price range ($200+ on Best Buy for the 32GB version) fully unlockable and possible fast updates from Google.

Hi, just bought a second hand g4 with serial number starting 509 will the phone possibly bootloop? Also the phone is the Taiwan model and I currently live in the UK, will having the Taiwan model cause any problems? Thanks

It may Bootloop it may not. There is no definite answer. You may have problems with a non EU model in the EU. They may fix it or may not. You have to ask an LG service centre about this.

If you ask if 509 is prone to Bootloop issue I think it is. Most bootloops happened on 505 though but the general consensus is the newer G4 you have the less chances for bootloop. Again there is no definite answer. We do not know the dirty details. We don't know which S/N is safe and if LG fixed the problem and from which S/N and after they did. We purely rely on public reports to draw conclusions. Up until now 6xx seems safe with only 1 or 2 ppl reported a bootloop on Reddit. Just make a backup and keep your data on the SD card. If you get a bootloop contact LG. They seem to be aware of the issue and fixing all broken phones even out of warranty some times.

Thanks so much for the response!!! So do you recommend I return the phone as there is a risk of boot loop and the phone is from Taiwan so they may not fix it?

yes theres a high chance it may bootloop.. and no UK wont repair your phone.. you must shipped to the country you got it from .. i say return. and get a phone with 6xx serial number.. there less reports with those serial numbers..
maybe @jinderation can chime in... hear hes story.

I had taiwan h815 yes it did bootloop eventually there are reported 509s in bootloop also if u bought it used u wont have warranty from uk only taiwan that is if u have the original receipt n the warranty card in the box n u must have a friend in taiwan too who can go to lg center n have it replaced n i tried email n phone they didnt help me ... If ur going to use it longer period like a year forget it lots of frustration

I'm in the UK and have the same problem - a bootlooping TWN H815. It was purchased used last year, so no receipt or warranty card. I was wondering whether you had explored paying LG for an out-of-warranty repair? At this stage I'm looking at the best way of cutting my losses.

In US cost of repairs alone is 200US$ cuz of morherboard replacement either that or which u can get a used g4 at the same price so even if ur bootloops there is no point of fixing it....all i can say for u is to wait for atleast an year after the bootloop so the prices fall down for repairs....there is no way u can send it to taiwan also there is no warranty n recepit thats only even if u have a friend there...

Avoiding heat
Hi all am in same boat. Got a EU H815 an 506 hw1.0 and until a week ago had never heard about bootloop issue. I've had unlocked bootloader, rooted with custom ROMs nearly whole ownership and as a result have never had any heat up issues. After reading 100s of pages of the issue my conclusion is that it seems to be heat that affects a soldered component which eventually fails. So based on this theory I'm using Kernel Adiutor to control the throttling when CPU temp gets >55degc. It is only an educated guess but does seem logical. Hope it helps others

Definitely the cause. I did always notice with stock ROMs Genisys etc my phone got hotter than CM and logically it makes sense so I'm sticking with it :fingers-crossed:

Seems like the issue calmed down over the winter in the northern hemisphere. And now that the summer is in full bloom people are looping like crazy. Im hoping between being almost as far north as one gets in usa. So like 85 far. Is blazing here. Plus me doing the thermal mod im keeping my device cool enough to make it as i have no waranty so a mb replacement costs me about 200 dollars american.
I have a s6 and a couple other mid range devices. I wont hesitate to toss my g4 in the trash. I got mine on a trade in from my g3 i only paid like 150 for my g4 so nope not me. Unless i get one cheap.
If this was an automobile this would be a recall i dont understand why these devices arent recalled.
I saw a news cast talking about how they make devices so cheap and breakable "for the economy" why would u buy the newest devices out if your old ones are running quite perfectly they say. So this is for economic reasoning. So go ahead lg keep making s****y devices i will buy a new one but not from you.

They are always better options than LG out there...the credibility rate for lg is always has been the worst thats why there used phones are sold dirt cheap everywhere

Hi, my G4 had bootloop recently, motherboard was changed under the warranty. New motherboard was made in 04/2018. Is it known if newer motherboards still have a bootloop issues?

they are all bad as far as i know. And yes, nobody has this phone as its later revisions bootlooped after warranty and its more expensive to repair this piece of crap than what it is worth even after repairing.

the bootloop problem is only on S/N:505 and 506 motherboards. You should check before buying if its 6XX then you are good to go.

It's not just 505, 506 even 512 died on XDA. Haven't heard anything from 6XX tho. Not, yet.

yes they do but in a lower sacel. so its i would say if you get a 6XX 601 and up maybe a 30% chance.. just make sure it has warranty.

I never had heard about a 6xx having a bootloop. I own 2 h815 with 6xx serial do you have any prove for that?
Tbo there will be no guarantee and as raptorddd said make sure you get the invoice with it. If the device has no guarantee anymore the chances are good (which is bad) that it is a 5xx device.

go to the reddit thread read there, go to the thread here G4 bootloop and youll see. the latest ive read was a 604 from some guy in russia. from pdnet forum. i have read people reporting from 601 to 603 just one 604. i have not seen or read a 605.

tbh I was considering the G4 only because I found a used one for cheap. Seeing the risk there is in buying one, I'll hold on to my SGS II for a little longer and get something like a OP3 later

I just got a new G4 from B&H. I'm nervous about keeping the phone due to the issues. The manufacturing date is 9/2016 and the serial number is 609. I cannot believe that LG would knowingly manufacture more potentially bad phones in 9/2016. What do you think? Am I fairly safe in keeping the phone???

There are higher chances than old variants of it not happening, but it can still happen.
A positive example would be my G4 with 605 as its serial number, nearly a year on this thing and still no bootloop (unlike my sisters 509, that after 8 months entered bootloop, but she repaired it)

theres no guarrantee. it may bootloop..
but anything grom 601 up. its good . there a very low chance, your is most likely not to. as it very new.

My refurbished LG G4 H818P going strong and fine from April 2016, till now no bootloop and it's a SN603 from SN506, the motherboard SN506 died only in April itself. I believe LG admitted quietly will replace new motherboards for free! I hope that SN600 and above is free from bootloops.

My G4 s/n 602 has no issues at all. Not even overheating.

Nobody can really vouch for it. I have a 604 and I did not have any issues regarding bootloop. I have been using it with the stock LG Rom for 10 months now since May last year. I would keep it stock with a different launcher if you do not like LG UX 4.

S/N 603 no problems so far..

I own two h815 with 603 serial. Heavy usage. Absolute no probs.

Has LG actually fixed bootloops in newer models (SN601+)? Or can they still fail too?

Sorry if this has been answered before, I tried looking around the forum and couldn't find a definitive answer about this. Or perhaps people just don't know yet... Anyway, I own a G4 that developed the bootloop and LG agreed to help. I'll supposedly be getting a new replacement phone (mine is a Singapore variant, they're swapping it for a US carrier version instead). Hopefully all goes well and I get a fully functional replacement.
But i'm still concerned. Thanks to videos from CellularDR and others, the exact cause of the defect is known and fixable. If you have the tools and skill to delid the SOC, clean and de-solder the defective materials inside, and re-solder properly (which I don't). I'm sure LG is also aware of the way to fix it themselves if they were so inclined, though i'm not sure if I trust them to apply those corrections properly to prevent the problem from returning. It was initially believed they fixed models manufactured October 2015 and later (serial number beginning in 510). Mine however was a 510 and developed the problem. It can take time for bootloops to start too (mine lasted almost a year and a half), so even a 6xx or 7xx device that works at first may still bootloop later if the proper modifications were not made by LG.
So are newer "fixed" 6xx or 7xx models really fixed and safe from the bootloop? Anyone had any of these fail on them yet? I realize one way to tell- taking apart the Snapdragon SOC and see how the solder looks, but I don't expect anyone would have done this (nor expect them to).

Nobody really knows.
But I can say that I do not trust any refurbished phone where the mainboard gets replaced!
I believe this is also a hot fix only and it differs from phones produced since 2016.
I own two 603 serials and well I'm a heavy user when it comes to stress test due to development. No issues so far.. But regular backups is a must always

I did see a couple of people in another thread were claiming their 601 G4's bootlooped. So that is troubling to me. Though I also saw someone else claim that there were actually some cases of people lying on here about the issue happening to them (Samsung trolls or something to that effect). I haven't found any posts claiming any G4's with 602 and above are bootlooping.
When I spoke with LG tech support, they said that I would be receiving a replacement phone instead of repairing my original device. Due to it being from a different region. I do not know anything about the "new" G4 they'll be sending back though, except that I think it'll be a T Mobile H811 variant (at least that is the carrier I said i'd be using, they seemed to be allowing me to choose). I don't know if it's going to be a new device or some kind of refurbishment, nor the model number it will have.
I'll have to cross my fingers. And hopefully they honor the replacement and don't find any reason to refuse to help me. I took very good care of the device and didn't go messing with it apart from exchanging the original battery (which went bad for no apparent reason and actually physically inflated, had to get rid of it as it's a fire hazard).

I never saw any proof(!) for a 603 or higher device which gets boot looped. Only one refurbished and actually without any proof. That's why I do not trust any refurbished..
The fix was introduced in late 2015 but I personally believe it takes time to change the production process. This means you would get e.g. a 511 with the fix and and also without (I have no proof for it though) and depending on the time required to change all production paths this can take a while.
I believe that you can be save after 3-4 months after the fix was introduced so 603 and later. But well guarantees are elsewhere..

i would say. from 601 upwards it still can happen but no like before with 505-510's seems there a re slim chances it will.
last ive heard was a 603 about 3 of them.. not bad.. compared to the 505's so id say chances are slimmer..

My concern with assuming the reliability of 6xx models is the length of time it can take before a bootloop appears. My 510 lasted from January 2016 to May 2017 before it failed. Almost a year and a half. Though I do not know how typical my G4's lifespan was compared to others.
I don't know how typical that length of time is for others who bootlooped, but perhaps the reason so few 6xx devices have failed is because they're not old enough yet. Hopefully we don't see an increasing number of 6xx models failing as the year goes on.

yes true. about what you say.. but seems that reports are lower. nothing like the 5XX.

I've tried to find any accurate information regarding reliability of more recent versions, but haven't found any reliable source.
I had a 506, and it experienced bootloop after 12 months of moderate usage. It was repaired under warranty, and now it's 705 (motherboard was made in may 2017).
I just can't see any logic in producing crippled motherboards almost two years after cause of boot loop is discovered..

After 1 year and 2 months, my S/N 601 G4 just got bootloop last week. Threw it straight into the dustbin since that device was imported from the UK
just for the sake of the unlockable bootloader that doesn't exist in Asia.

My 511 just started bootlooping. Was able to get my data by setting it in front of my AC but will immediately reboot if it move it away.

Interesting fact is that motherboards usually fail after 1 year and 2 month (most likely). It was the same with my G4.

The replacement model LG sent me has a 701 serial number, so January 2017. Good. I guess this is the best chance of getting a bootloop free G4 that I can hope for. Though there's no telling if these models are safe either due to the time they can take to break. Can take a year or more to tell (and by then who knows if LG will even bother to help anymore).
At least for now though I once again have a working phone. It's also cooler thus far than my former G4, so maybe they did do something. Plus I now have a custom kernel and overclocking enabled on the big cores (though the custom governor settings might actually be helping thermals).
