Painfully slow Contacts app - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

Is anyone else's contacts app excruciatingly slow? I find that I will touch the icon, then wait almost 5 seconds before thinking that I must've not hit it the first time so I hit it again, only to find that I'm now accidentally calling the last contact I viewed. This has happened since I got my XL in December, on both stock and Pure Nexus while I was using that, and now again while on stock 7.1.2.

Mine is buttery smooth and quick even when I clear it out of recent apps. Stock 7.1.2 no root not unlocked.

Occasionally mine seems smooth, but more often it will sit for between 3 and t seconds before it will open. It's extremely frustrating.

I am having the same issue in accessing my Google calendar. I've tried clearing data & clearing cache then rebooting the phone
(Something you should try Neilrl79) but my problem never goes away. it might clear up the slow issue for like 5 minutes but the problem comes back again! Very frustrating!!
I've since downloaded another calendar and the issue goes away (while i use the different calendar)

yyyeeeessssss... me too! I was going to say similiar problem with google calendar for me.

Maybe we should start a Google Calendar thread?
I've tried uninstalling and i even wiped my phone ( As well as clearing the cache & data). All no good because the problem always comes back!

Contacts and Google Calendar are lightning fast here. Maybe it has to do with the amount of contacts or events you have? Around 110 contacts here, most with pictures synced from Facebook or Google Photos.
Setup is in my signature.

@murphdsurf I've tried the same things.. I do not understand at all.

Right now I'm going through my calendar and deleting old stuff to see if that helps?

Same here
I have the same issue - very slow contacts. Slow to load, slow to search and also very slow to save a new contact. I hit save on a contact and it takes 5-10 seconds to register the tap and save the contact. I do have ~1600 contacts but have always had loads and my previous Android phones worked fine so I can't imagine that a Pixel XL shouldn't be able to cope!

Facebook for HTC sense not updating

Im having an issue with Facebook sense. I noticed after restarting my phone for the first time that the Facebook friend stream was no longer updating even though it was set to update every hour and it was enabled, Looking in the setting menu confirmed this as the last updated time was not changing unless i forced a resync. Removing and re-adding the account worked for a while until I restarted the phone but as soon as I did the same issue manifested, it just wont automatically update. All other automatic updates seem to work.
Has anyone else encountered this issue and if so have you managed to find a resolution?
Cheers!
if you have the little power bar widget, with Bluetooth WiFi etc on, have you turned on the reloading sign?

Already checked that, every other app updates correctly just not facebook
log out then back in...it fixed my friends list not updating with new friends, probably will sort out th e friendstream (providing you've not already fixed it)
make sure its the facebook for htc rather than facebook for android tho !
How are you logging out of it?

I don't have my phone with me at the moment, but while logged into Facebook, is there no option to log out via the browser or when you press the Menu button?
I had that problem, fixed by going into settings and re-selecting the update frequency, seems to need repeating at each boot.
Does anyone know how to update contact pictures? My friends have updated their facebook prof pics but it isnt getting update to my phone.
i had to delete my facebook account then re-add it
Facebook integration seems a bit iffy on mine too. New friend facebook contacts do not show up on Contacts tab (to be linked). It seems the thing does not update without remove-re add.

Yeah I had to remove the account and re-add but then it only synced 30 contacts at first and then I had to keep resyncing 3 times to get all contacts synced.
Same here.....had to re-add my account
The first time it cut off at around 40. I rebooted the Desire, now I have the first 40 twice.

Solution
Had the same issue, just updated facebook and all better now...
not to beat a dead horse on this one, but I am having something along these issues with my FriendStream widget. The Facbook isn't updateing hourly like it should, I have tried the following to correct the problem:
Removed/Re-Added my account
Cleared all Cache Data
Cleared all Data
Reset the phone (factory Reset)
Updated Facebook
Really ata loss for what I should do from here, any ideas or suggestions would be awesome.

[Q] Gmail native app not pushing emails

Hey Guys,
Been experiencing gmail issue for the last couple of weeks.
Desire Z, now with the OTA update - used to have root, task managers, but did factory data reset which should remove those two, correct?
Upon boot, gmail functions well, and pushes my mail thru well, then after a while, i'd go into the gmail app and refresh, and a flurry of emails would come thru, some hours old.
I've done several factory resets, at the moment have weather sync every 3 hours, gmail, exchange (push), facebook for sense every 12 hours, and whatsapp.
Not sure how the native gmail app works, is it exchange? proprietary sync? imap idle? or thru the google cloud service?
been reading and people have cleared the gmail cache as a temp workaround, but I find this annoying, and its results are hit and miss.
I have tried on gmail app version 2.3 and 2.3.2 (latest)
any ideas?
PS - background data on, sync on, all on!
Native gmail app is pushhhhhh. It should be pushing down....
I have had troubles with syncing but I flash so muchstuff I'm never in the same place at the same time. So a wipe is always the fix everytime.
If I were you id quit on the weather (look up at the sky) and facebook. Eliminate the junk if you are trying to fix something substantially important. See what happens. Try a wipe they feel good actually.
vision
Thanks for the suggestion,
over the weekend (Xmas weekend) i wiped twice, both times i didnt install anything else, both times after a period of time, it would stop pushing.
I have no idea now hahaha
Ok, so i just did it again, factory reset, formatted SD card, completely clean phone.
installed only my gmail account and my work exchange account. nothing else.
my push gmail worked for about 1/2 hour, and stopped again.
The problem is with Gmail. They just updated the.app. go to the Market and download the new app before you.delete your whole phone or something.

Possible cause for the system server CPU spike at bootup?

I'm wondering if I have found the cause of the notorious problem with the system server taking up 100% of the CPU at bootup. It seems to correlate with gmail accounts, or exchange accounts syncing at bootup.
To try and figure out what what causing the problem I started with a fresh install of FRX03 (using the latest kernel, 1253) and slowly added back my programs and settings, rebooting as I added things. Only after configuring my gmail account for the first time did I experience the lag. I then changed my gmail to not sync anything and the lag issue went away. I then added my exchange account and the lag issue came back.
After configuring my exchange account to sync on a schedule instead of push mode I've been able to reboot five times with absolutely no lag. I did experience the lag isue one time, but prior to changing my account settings I had to reboot four or fives times just to get the phone working.
For anyone having the issue, please try disabling sync on your exchange and gmail and let me know the results.

I don't use gmail, so i don't sync it. I use hotmail and it syncs everything 15 minutes. I experience lag for about 1 min after booting and after that it works just fine.
Hrm, never heard a theory that it's based on GSync.
I think it's related to netloc - I've heard when GSM guys disable it, the bug all but goes away.
CDMA, unfortunately netloc doesn't work... so it's always off for me, and I definitely experience the bug.
Calling voicemail always clears it up for me.
Some have said opening Google Maps/Places fixes it too, but it doesn't for me - I'm wondering if it's GSM guys that is working for... I'd bet my left kidney.
The calling voicemail trick works for me too, but sometimes the phone is so hosed that my phone dialer crashes and I have to reset. I'll report back the next time I have time to reboot.
And just like that I'm experiencing the problem again.
*facepalm*
Oh well!

netloc = network location?
I cleared the data for network location in application settings and then rebooted and the problem didn't happen so maybe that is it. I keep doing that regularly and see if it continues to work.

For me the Google maps trick works.. takes longer then calling voicemail tho, cause it's a drag to navigate to google maps when everything is in slowmotion, and all I want is fastforward...
Takes a couple of times before it finds my location btw, first few clicks say location not available. But voicemail always does the trick
vmail does the trick
usually when it boots up into No Service, i wait for the 3g signal to come in before dialing. actually put a direct contact just for dialing hahaha

Are you on GSM?
I have this issue again with top showing system_server is constantly consuming around 50% CPU, this coupled with user CPU processes leaves my CPU pegged above 95%. As a result my phone is terribly slow and batt drains fast. I'm on Android stock unrooted 6.01 with a Galaxy note 4.

Contacts force close

Anyone have this issue? My contacts randomly crashes even when I'm on the home screen doing nothing.
Happens to me too. No idea why. Maybe because of some app I've disabled. I don't worry about it.

Try disabling hangouts. That should be the cure. Worked for me.
I also read somewhere Google + can cause contact issues also.
Already disabled. Like I said, I don't sweat the small stuff. ?

Yep, sorry I quoted you. Meant to quote the OP.
No need to quote people who don't sweat the small stuff!
I would ignore it but it just happened 5 times playing boom beach lol
Waiting for lollipop to factory reset.
A Gmail update causes this to crash I read. I have lollipop now so it seems to be fixed but if your still having the issue uninstall the update on the Gmail app and see if it goes away
I had this issue also.. Drove me nuts... I cleared cache and data for contacts and contacts storage and that solved it for about 2 weeks... Then it happened once right when I opened the dialer... After that was about another 10 days or so without it.. Now I have Lollipop so hopefully it's still gone/fixed
Mince crashed a while back a few times then stopped. Happens on my wifes S5 as well. She doesn't use Hangouts.
Mine crashes now when I try to use the favorites tab and HD calling is enabled. If I use the contacts tab it works just fine. It only crashes on the contacts that also have HD calling. Anyone else experiencing this on 5.0?
I've had this problem dialing my wife from favorites. Clearing contacts storage data only temporarily resolves issue. No idea how to fix.
I did a factory reset and now the contacts work just fine even with HD calling enabled.

gmail sync problems (even in pie)

Hello
as far as i saw
and i research there's no solution right now for ages of the sync problem of Gmail app (or it is the android it self), there is any application that can over it so i can get really notifications on time without any delay like the Gmail app?
it can be at Gmail delay till i open the screen , till now i tried all the available solutions including full wipe of the device and install from scratch, yet the problem there, so i thought maybe to move to another app that can do the same sync without delays.
thank you

Does your issue extend to other phones other than the Pixel? You have posted this same issue several times over a long period of time. You don't mention that your carrier is Swisscom, or consider that to be a contributing factor. What phone did you have before the Pixel.... was it the N6P? Whatever phone it was, did you have the same issue? I'd have to go back and look at my messages but I am pretty sure we had a conversation, you did wipe your phone, Gmail sync time is not adjustable, and maybe you should try/test a different carrier or chalk it up to your location? When you "wiped" your phone did you fastboot flash a full image leaving the wipe switch (-w) in the flash-all script in place or did you remove it?

yes, i fully wiped the phone.
second, it was from day zero with new device - pixel 2 xl.
thered, ot was also with n6p, also, the wipe was a flash of full image leaving the wipe switch (-w) in the flash-all script in place
and the issue is with WiFi so the carrier here is not a factor.
and like the other posts, i think it's android thing and not carrier/isp thing

Well, ok but if I had two different new phones from two different manufacturers (across multiple versions of Android) exhibit the exact same issue, I would conclude differently than you have. Best of luck to you, I know this must be frustrating.
I actually installed Microsoft Outlook because I have, or had, this same problem with Gmail, and the Outlook notifications work. The only thing is there seem to be more notifications since it doesn't screen message priority the same way. Although, after the update to Pie, and a factory reset, the notifications on Gmail have improved to where I took the accounts off of the Outlook app. However, the phone originally seemed to do notifications just fine and then one day just didn't, so we'll see how it goes.
If I have my ipad on and/or my old Note 4, or Nexus 5X on, they'll often show the notifications, while the Pixel 2XL won't. In fact I keep them around because sometimes they're the only way I catch something in time.
I also started having problems with calendar notifications on the Pixel 2XL many months back. I think it has improved after Pie, but seems hit and miss. Again, my prior phones show them just fine.

Little late on the reply, but yeah, the notifications work with Outlook. Which is much better than Gmail if they aren't. But, as I said before, my Gmail came back to life after the last update, so I only have my Hotmail account on Outlook now. Outlook app does tend to show more alerts than Gmail app.
i did also tried the edisson email and it's quit fast than gmail itself
