Edit fiftyfuknmillion;
soooooooooooooooo, the error was a lack of space on the internal memory. Deleted some crap and the restores occured fine!
Particular data recovered and backed up externally.
sooooooooo, back to my original question; how the **** do I delete EVERYTHIGN on the phone before handing it back??
Edit3; ok, title edit. My major concern is not been able to get this restore to work. Anyone able to help.
extractTarFork() process ended with ERROR: 255
Short history;
1) HTC M8 on TWRP 3.0.20, rooted, running fine, backed up no issues. Screen breaks, getting warrenty replacement. Create new backup, System Data and Boot. Completes fine to microSD.
2) return phone to stock recovery before taking into store as to not void warrenty, stock recovery loads fine, warrenty approved.
3) go to return phone to previous state (TWRP & restore that backup) and the backup fails with above Error 255.
4) complete format to 6.24.841.1 including recovery - loads fine, phone looks brand new with exception of some data remaining on internal storage.
5) tried multiple things, restoring just the boot, restoring only data, wiping this and that. So far, nothing will let the Restore succeed.
Any help would be much appreciated!!!
Hi all;
My beloved M8 had vertical line on the touch screen die so I couldn't touch in that zone - 10 days before the warranty was due to end - lucky! Telstra honnored the warranty without issue, and they are replacing the unit with a new M8.
Questions;
1) Can I take my Backup from TWRP 3.0.20 (on an external microSD) and load it onto the new M8? best method or just install TWRP and restore this backup?
2) in past experiences I had issues with restores and rooting, and I've always noticed certain data is still on the phone after reloading a "clean install". What is the absolute best way to delete all data? (I have a tinfoil hat sometimes). I want to delete absolutely everything possible so the phone is effective factory new.
Thanks for your support.
Edit: I just tried to restore to a Backup created 2 nights ago and received Error 255? Any ideas why?? (still using same original M8 - replacement not here yet).
Edit2; extractTarFork() process ended with ERROR: 255
it appears I can't even load my last backup from 2 nights ago. What have I done wrong??? It was made with TWRP 3.020 and using the same 3.0.20 to reload it.
Not familiar with Error 255. Maybe try using the TWRP "Format data" button in the Wipe section; in case there is some data corruption preventing the restore?

hi, i need help restoring my backup in cwm 3.0.2.8.
The system partition restores fine but none of my apps or anything get restored. I've tried different versions of cwm and none of them have worked. I know i can just restore my apps with my backup or titanium but i shouldnt have to and i forgot to before i made the backup.
It doesnt even restore any if my contacts, texts, etc. It seems like its just restoring the rom with what ever mods and tweaks i had applied. This has happened with multiple roms so i reckon its a fault with cwm. Also when restoring just the data in cwm it doesnt say "Restore complete!"
Anybody got any suggestions?
Anybody got any suggestions?
How are you restoring your ROMs?
Your contacts should be backed up with your Google account.
They are backed up but cwm should restore everything. After i restore it asks me to login to my google account, select my time-zone, etc.
Im restoring from recovery.
It seems like cwm is crashing while restoring my data partition because the screen goes black whilst still showing the rom manager icon and it goes back to the inital screen of recovery like i just booted into it.
Have you checked your SDcard for errors?
There are hundreds of people who use ClockworkMod Recovery without issue. (excusing 3.0.2.5)
Could be something as simple as a couple of bad sectors on your card.
I recently formatted it before i made the backup, how would i check for any more errors?
Try HERE. Its in Russian. So you'd need to visit via Google or use Chrome.
I downloaded but i dont have a clue how to use it
Read through the manual.
Or you could follow this guide HERE, I'm pretty certain that the first tool would be more accurate.
I tried the russian one but i got access denied so im doing the windows method. If none of this works, is there a way to manually extract the files from the .img file? I mainly want the data from my apps because i hav around 300
How are you connecting your SDcard to your computer? I just ran a test using ,
Code:
flashnul G: -T
It worked fine, that was connected via USB cable with the card mounted as a drive.
No problems which I'm pretty pleased with, now just to transfer my data back.
I forgot to run CMD as admin, its running now
EDIT: I didnt get any errors
If the SDcard is fine. Then I'd reflash CWM Recovery.
I have. The only reason I flashed .2.8 was because of this problem. I have to send my phone to HTC on monday for repair so when I get I back (20 days later) Il start again from fresh. For now I'm gonna unroot and s-on etc etc... I hate sense.
Thanks a million for your help though!
Question: If HTC swap my phone with another, will my backup still work with the new one?
Off topic, I point blank refused to wait 21 days + for a repair. After some wrangling got an exchange. Sadly the exchange handset had severe case misalignment issues. Refused that also.
Yes your backup will still work. It doesn't matter what handset you use. The backup isn't tied to it.
Haha the speaker for calls doesn't work anymore so i hav to send it back. 20 days is gnna seem like forever lol. I'm gnna hav to look for my Nokia 3310. It's like 10 years old and its never failed me once.
As for my back up, when I do get my phone back i need to go through my apps and delete what I don't want.....or I could buy a bigger mem card and setup A2SD. Is there no way to browse inside the data.img file from the backup?
My phone freaked out earlier today and after spending some time trying to recover it, I just had to wipe it and reinstall the ROM. Sad day, but no major harm done.
However, I have lost the data to some of my apps, which I would like to return. I have a Titanium backup from ~4 days ago which is fine for most, but some (games) I would like to recover my progress.
I've got a nandroid backup from when the phone wouldn't turn on (gets stuck on white 'HTC Evo 4G' screen), and I'm trying to use unyaffs.exe to pull out the file contents to grab the application data, but it's failing. It says "end of image" twice and then deletes the data (goes from ~400MB file to 0kB).
What am I doing wrong? Ideally I'd like to pull the specific application data from one nandroid and put it into the other, but I'm unsure how to do that. I tried using ext2explore.exe and that isn't working either.
tl;dr -- I want to extract some application data from a nandroid backup, but the unyaffs.exe approach isn't working. Help?
Hello all. So this morning i was looking to flash to Blaze4G modem that Master&Slave has so kindly uploaded for us, and after backing up and wiping cache, i proceeded to flash the modem.
after booting up i had no 4G connection, and trying to mess with APN's resulted in "no data connection" error. I know i've seen this same error over in the developers thread for the Blaze modem, but don't know what i did wrong. some careful combing and reading of the thread should give me solution to the aforementioned problem, HOWEVER this is not the issue i am posting about.
After the failure of the modem, i attempted to restore my nandroid backup via CWM recovery and after a notice "no files found", it proceeded to restore my listed recovery anyways. Upon finishing the recovery and booting up, i was presented with the very same screen that you get when you turn the phone on or flash a new rom the first time, asking me to sign in to my google account, along with an error "SYSTEM UIDs INCONSISTENT" along with an error message that reads "UIDs on the system are inconsistent, you need to wipe your data partition or your device will be unstable" along with a button that says "i'm feeling lucky"
i fortunately have a previous backup, but would like to know how the flying **** this happened, as having a nandroid backup completely fail like this is new to me and makes me very nervous. Had i not had a backup that was a couple days before the newly made one i would be flipping out pretty bad at the moment.
i also forgot to mention that i did click "skip" on setting up a google account in order to get to the home screen and see if it carried over anything, but the phone appears to be reset to stock on my particular ROM with no user apps at all, like i did a system format.
i also checked the nandroid file with "appextractor" from the play market to see if my apps and data were indeed inside, and upon doing an app scan, i found ALL my apps and could have extracted them from the backup if i so desired.
this makes it even more CONFOUNDING that the backup acts like a formatter, this is VERY perturbing to me.
ideas?
i had an issue like this before.
to fix it i ran the darkside superwipe script and then was able to restore my nand backup.

I hope this is the right subforum, there are _so_ many q-q
Hello,
Yesterday I was up to surfing on my GNex running CM10 nightly 2012-08-2?, but it just hung, vibrated, showed me the Google logo and booted up again. This is not unusual since it is a very early build, but when it was up again and demanded my PIN, I could hardly enter 3 digits when it hung and rebooted again. After 6 times it really annoyed me and I pulled out the battery.
I tried booting in Safe Mode, but that didn't work either. So I wiped system and both caches, flashed the same build again, same problem
I can imagine that wiping data would help, but my last backup is quite a few weeks old and I don't want to lose my data so this would be the very last solution.
I hope someone will be able to help me
qsuscs
Oh, maybe this could be important: I use ClockworkMod Touch 6.0.1.0
You could try to flash the newest nightly and see if that works, but in the end I think you are going to have wipe your data. You could make a backup from cwm and try wiping than restoring the backup. I don't know if that would help any but it could be worth a shot.
And dont restore app/system data.

If you can still get into the recovery, you can run a backup and then restore apps/data from a nandroid via titanium backup once you get it up and running.
Nandroid does not really work.
Code:
ClockworkMod Recovery v6.0.1.0
SD Card space free: 7426MB
Backing up boot image...
Backing up recovery image...
Backing up system...
Freeing space...
Done freeing space.
Backing up data...
Error while making a backup image of /data!
Does anyone know why it doesn't, or maybe another backup solution?
Could I do a backup with another recovery? Or could flashing anotherr recovery even cause data loss?
Triple post hope you can forgive me
So I flashed TWRP. Nandroid didn't work there, too, but I think I know the reason: /data needs to be mountet read-only for the backup, but this is impossible when it is written to the internal storage (/data/media). And since neither TWRP nor ClockworkMod have a TCP stack, I'll need an USB-OTG-adaptor and an USB flash drive. Luckily, I know someone who has one, gonna ask him tomorrow...
Team,
I just recently bought a Google Pixel and was attempting to transfer my contacts and messages and stuff from my HTC One M8 to my Google Pixel. However, my HTC One M8 was still on KitKat (4.4.2) and would not work with the transfer tool. So then I said let me take a TWRP backup of my phone before i start attempting to update it.
I attempted to download a rom to flash via TWRP but it did not work so I naturally tried to restore back to the TWRP backup I took.
Except now everytime I try to restore the backup I took all I get is extractTarFork() process ended with ERROR: 255
I have attempted to google all day with no luck.
Anyone dealt with this and have resolved it?
Thanks!

Did you try updating TWRP? I had something like this happen a few years ago with my S3 and updating my recovery fixed it.

yep, I had updated to twrp 3.0.2.0...still no luck
there has to be a way to fix this
so now even more weird. I downloaded Titanium Backup to try and extract from my TWRP backup, and nothing is there!
how the f is that possible!? does this mean my data is forever gone?
NoCall log, you should backup your calls with CALL LOG BACKUP & RESTORE apk from play store.Messages, you should backup with SMS BACKUP AND RESTORE apk from market(witch also can make a backup of all your sms/mms & call log!!!),so it's an one app for all. Both app make folders on your internal/sd memory that contain files selected by name and date, and you can just transfer this folders from M8 to Pixel and download those apps from playstore on your new Pixel phone, and restore calls/sms..About Titanium restore, isn't M8 ARM phone and Pixel is ARM64(or x86,I'm not sure)?so you can't restore those apps in TB cuz they're different versions with diferent screen DPI,and I suppose they won't work or TB gives you error cuz of that. You can only restore data from TB ,and it's very probable that some of those "restore' s" will give you problem due thing I sad in upper text and also cuz of big difference in Android versions(4.4>7.0+).
I hope you understand what I try to say,English is not my language, and I'm just trying to help you.I didn't by Pixel yet,I plan to,and this is what I would use in mind doing those transfers and restore procedure.
I had LGG4(ARM64),I transfered all my TB folder from M8(ARM),and when restoring ARM>ARM64 ,many of them force closed or mail function. But ONLY data restore allways worked on already installed app.
And about your error and problems on m8 with TWRP,yes try with some other and maybe older versions of TWRP(if m8 is on 4.4.4 ,then maybe latest recoveryes have problem to do backup and restore. In the end,try to flash stock RUU for your version on it,then TWRP+superuser,to try to fix all.BUT BEFORE Ruu Move all your TB and other data from internal memory/sd to computer or some other external drive-in case you lost or overwrite your data on phone.
Maybe someone will point you in right direction, maybe someone already had that problem.

I took the full backup of my M8 using some version like TWRP v2.8.0.? I tried to restore the backup and it kept throwing me that error. So I said, lets try to flash the latest version of TWRP and that is what I did. I attempted restoring through the latest TWRP but still I get the same error. I have also tried to extract the backup using Cygwin with no luck. Titanium Backup also does not see it as a valid backup.
I am still on Android 4.4.2 (I had a backup from 2014 I was able to restore to in the meantime and is rooted).
The only place the data from my M8 is, is in the TWRP backup file which refuses to restore. All data on the phone was formatted and overwritten as I tried to flash a newer rom on it with no success. I have not tried to restore the data to my pixel and will not do so. All I need to do is restore the M8 backup to the M8 and try the methods you listed but I cannot get past this TWRP error. Or, get the backup to extract properly without throwing errors so that I can get the appropriate .db files from within
I am sure there is a fix involved with TWRP or is my wishful thinking sore out of luck?
I had this problem and it took me two days to resolve it. I had a good backup and I know it was good because I had used it several times and it worked. But then after doing some system installs I got the error 255. I tried several things to fix it and nothing worked and I really did not want to lose my backup. What did work for me was to use TWRP wipe function to FORMAT the phone. Wiping or factory reset did not work. I lost the contents of my internal SD card but I was able to transfer most to my external SD card. You could also connect the phone with a cable to a computer and use the pull command in ADB to backup the contents f the internal SD card. Given the choice between losing the SD card and the data files I come to lose some of the SD card. Anyway, a FORMAT worked when nothing else did. I read that this error is caused by a lack of space. When I checked the log it seemed that the restore was failing with a particular file which misled me to thinking I had to remove the corrupt file, but since after the format I was able to restore without any problem, it would seem that there was no corrupt data. Hope this helps someone.
