NEXUS 5X USB issues - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

All,
I own a NEXUS 5X for more than 12 months. I am running 7.1.2.
Today, I started to get into issue with it. It didn't want to connect to my car using android auto.
I first suspected airwatch so I resetted the phone to factory default, and then I found out that the phone was not seeing when it is connected to USB.
I am starting to get clueless.
Anything I can do to get it to work?
I tried connecting it on windows and I got
Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)
A request for the USB device descriptor failed.Antoine

Did you install the drivers for the phone, adb and fastboot in Windows?

Yes, I have the driver for the phone, and adb on windows.

ADB issues

Im unable to get my device recognized though adb. Nothings apearing on my computer (windows 7 x64) the usb driver that came with the latest sdk say its not windows 64 compatiable...
Im getting This device cannot start. (Code 10) in device status box
Where can i get latest driver from?
Did you try Samsung? I mean, they are the manufacturer of the phone and everything...
Also, this is in the wrong section. It belongs in General.
Pretty sure ADB handy when developing for android....
Do you have links to Samsung ADB driver for galaxy nexus? if not your post just spam so piss off.
Ive deleted all adb htc and usb drivers asossiated with an adroid device from my laptop but still i get device cannot start code 10 error...
how is everyone else getting this to work?
If its a laptop then try unplugging the power. That happened to me also.

[Q] GNex ADB device not detected by my PC [fixed]

Hi all,
I just bought a Galaxy Nexus and I'm having problems with the ADB port: my Lenovo w520 laptop running win7x64 simply does not detect the ADB device in device manager. I tried connecting the phone to my wife's laptop (HP running win7x64) and the ADB device is detected so it is not a problem of the phone or the cable. On my pc I only get the Galaxy Nexus MTP device and that is all.
It is not a matter of driver, there is simply no device detected hence it is not possible to send ADB command.
I do not know if it is related, but samsung USB mobile driver fails during installation without giving a valid reason.
anyone having similar problem ?
thanks
cheerts
So... how do you know its not a driver issue? Sounds like one to me. Have you tried manually installing other drivers?
Well, what is actually strange is that:
1) if I connect the phone to my wife laptop with USB debugging ON and no driver installed (it's HER pc, I cannot install my stuff), a composite device with two devices (MTP and ADB) is detected.
2) in fastboot mode, my laptop detects the ADB port and install proper drivers; using Galaxy Nexus toolkit, I can successfully list my device.
When the phone is fully booted, my laptop simply see only the MTP device. If it were just a matter of driver i would simply get an Unknown device in win7 device manager...
thanks
cheers

Eh. Fastboot is all you need.

After several attempts (including installing win7 x64 in a virtual machine ...) I finally solved my problem: it was indeed a driver issue, my win7 did not automatically searched for proper driver (and the Samsung driver is available on-line in windows update). I forced a driver update for the MTP device so that windows downloaded Samsung driver and now both the phone and ADB port are detected and working. It is still a mystery why the driver provided by various tool-kit failed to install, but nonetheless the GNex is now fully set-up.
Actually the solution is so dumb that I feel a bit ashamed of myself...
thank
bye

[Q] PC will not recognize Nexus 7

I have a completely stock, locked and unrooted Nexus 7 2013, and whenever I plug it into my computer, it will not recognize my device.
I've tried:
- checking/unchecking MTP
- switching to PTP
- turning on/off USB debugging
- uninstalling and reinstalling drivers
- Nexus 7 toolkit to install drivers, wouldn't work
- Wugfresh's toolkit, and followed the driver guide, still nothing.
After uninstalling the driver, Windows would allow me to choose a driver to install, but it would always end up saying "Windows has determined the best driver is currently installed" or something similar to that.
I am updated to the latest build, JSS15R. Before I updated, my computer was able to recognize my device just fine.
Is anyone else in the same situation as I am?
Hmmmm, are you using a USB extender cable or a long cable. Mine fails to pick mine up after the JSS15R update unless I use the given micro USB cable.

I'm using the cable that came with Nexus 7 that says "ASUS" on it.
When I tried to root my device I had a lot of problems connecting it with my PCs/Notebook.
I tried WinXP, 7 and 8 and got crazy because I never reached a reliable state.
If I remember correctly WugFresh's toolkit has an utility integrated that lists all "Android USB devices". I had to remove them all before it finally worked - and in the end I had to repeat this twice before my Nexus was rooted and had a recovery. And even then I had to dis- and reenable MTP etc. a few times.
After this I had to reinstall different drivers so that it was recognized as MTP again.
Took me one day for a process I expected only an hour.
So try the Root Toolkit and the utility inside.
I tried that. I might have to give it a try again. I might have missed some devices.

[Q] Rooted Nexus 7 Unique MTP Issues

Ok so I have a rooted nexus 7 that won't show up as an mtp device ever since I rooted another nexus 7 on the same computer. I have uninstalled all the drivers and re installed them a million times with device manager and USBDview nothing works. It connects to other computers as an mtp device, however ever since I rooted the other nexus 7 on the same computer it won't work. Also I don't have access to the other nexus because it was my friends. Obviously it's a computer issue because it connects to other computers as an mtp. I'm really out of things to try as I have searched for this problem, but only found people saying to re install the drivers. I would really appreciate some help because I don't know what to do. Thanks.

I also have weird issues. What I usually do is make sure the Nexus is configured for only one connection. So for MTP mounting I have PTP unchecked and USB debugging unchecked. Then I plug into the computer.
If it doesn't mount as MTP, I find it's usually because Windows has attempted to connect via ADB drivers. So I go into Device Manager and uninstall the device under "Android" while checking the box to remove drivers for the device. Then I unplug the Nexus and plug it back in, and it uses MTP drivers. I've always struggle with these driver issues for the Nexus, i don't know why it's so difficult. Good luck!
When I had issues with my mtp I had to uninstall adb drivers then plug my device back in so it would use mass storage and install the drivers. Somehow I have adb and mass storage working now with USB debugging on.
Check in device manager when you have adb uninstalled and see what your device comes up as.

I uninstall the adb drivers but for some reason windows automatically installs them right back instead of mtp drivers and then if I go to update drivers and select mtp as an option it says it won't work
When I try to install the mtp drivers it says "Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while trying to install it...your device can't start" Then it automatically installs the adb drivers. What would be the reason it won't let me install the mtp usb drivers? Has anyone else encountered this?

Nexus 5X not recognized on 2 PC's, 3rd one is working

Hi guys,
my 5X doesn't get recognized by my private Laptop or Desktop PC.
It's charging via USB but their is no "USB Connected" notification shown at the Nexus.
The device manager on both computers doesn't show anything related to the 5X.
Neither with installed drivers nor as unknown devices.
On my PC at work it's beeing recognized as expected.
But i don't have admin permission there, so adb etc. isn't an option and i want to upgrade manually from Marshmallow to Oreo.
Why maual upgrade? SuperSU, TWRP, ElemantalX, Aplify, BetterBatteryStaty, Xposed etc. is installed and will be installed in the future.
I also tried 3 different USB cables, one was new, so the cables shouldn't be the issue.
Do you have any idea?
I already tried google but didn't find anything related.
Thanks for your support!
Given that it works on one PC but not the other 2, I doubt this is your problem, but check the USB port on your phone for lint buildup. My 5X had a similar problem: it would charge via USB-C, but when plugging it into a computer, I never got the prompt on the phone to choose Charging, File Transfer, etc. Turns out that lint collects in the phone's port. Over time, plugging a connector into the phone compacts the lint, until eventually you have a hard layer of lint in the bottom of the port that prevents the connector from making full contact.
Grab something thin and non-conductive (a toothpick works) and gently dig around in the USB port on the phone and see if anything comes out.
In device manager do you have anything with a yellow ! Also, on the PC use the USB ports in the back of it, not ones on the front. It sounds like it, but have you installed android USB device drivers?

In devices manager i don't have anything with a ! or ? for unknown or incompatible hardware.
I would assume that the google usb drivers are installed since i used adb and fastboot when setting up my 5X year(s) ago.
But since then i haven't used it anymore.
I don't get why my Nexus 5X doesn't even hint me that it's connected via usb?

I would try reinstalling the usb drivers. Is the device not recognized when booted into recovery and the bootloader?

FWIW, My Nexus 5x is not recognized in any of my PCs USB 2.0 ports nor my car with Android Auto. It is however recognized in my PCs USB 3.0 (blue) ports.
I don't know exactly wtf just happend but
1) i plugged in my old S4 and it got recognized as Android MTP devices
2) then put my 5X in bootloader mode and plugged it in -> not recognized, ran fastboot devices command -> no devices found
3) then i manually installed google bootloader driver and unplugged my 5X and plugged it in again -> device found eek wtf???
4) then i booted my 5X -> not recognized by Windows (no usb mode showed up on 5X), S4 still active as MTP device
5) i unistalled the current s4 driver
6) unplugged my s4, plugged it back in, it got installed automatically and detected as MTP device
7) i unplugged my 5X plugged it back in and wosh -> usb notification showed up at 5X and MPT etc. is working again
how ist that possible?
how can driver-stuff be so messed up, that the 5X doesn't even noticed it's plugged in on a computer.
i trid all usb-ports and several cables, so there is no hardware error.
the last PC still isn't working with my 5X
