VPN Client on the Fire TV

Hi,
I'm in France and trying to set up a VPN client on the Fire TV.
The only decent I've found on the store is VPNroot which won't connect and display a "socket address family" error.
I'm using Boxpn service which works great on my desktop/mobiles.
Anyone succeeded in setting a VPN client on the ftv ?

Not yet. I have tried HMA and vyprVPN the apps crash when connecting to a server. You could do what I did and install DD-WRT on your router, granted your router is compatible. It works great for me and a have everything behind that router protected by the VPN

Yes i'm working on the router side too, but still thinks it'd be great to have the client running on the FTV itself.

Yeah, it would be cool to take it anywhere with you and just fire up the VPN app and get all the content without having to worry about carrying a router with you. ill keep looking into it. will update if find anything

I'm afraid, Fire TV OS is not particularly receptive to VPN usage however, if your router supports DD-WRT firmware, it's a good news because DD-WRT has the option of selecting different VPN configurations like: PPTP, L2TP or OpenVPN and Once configured, users on the network don’t need to enter a log in process when they need to activate the VPN. It just starts automatically, so any device connects automatically and easily, giving you all the benefits of using a reliable VPN service.

^^ Macuser just mentioned the tun.ko vpn module got it working. Theres a tun.ko installer by droidvpn in the playstore that some of u guys may want to mess with.

i tried to follow Rose Ab's idea
i found an old router with dd-wrt on it, i now have to networks: one local and one connected via vpn which has the AFTV on it.

Care to share how you configured the two networks? I'm thinking about doing the same thing, but can't find a reliable guide to do so.
I have two routers - both configured with dd-wrt. I find that when I plug my second router (w/vpn) into the first's LAN port, I can never get a connection to pass through. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

actually, i have one router for my "usefull" network wich is configured as a gateway (you can use your internet box too). The other is configured as a vpn connected client, connected on the first, making a network for devices that need to be connected to the USA. I use purevpn and they have good tutorials for tomato or ddwrt and other kind of routers.
I also have a NAS with two ethernet ports... each connected on a different network, so it can be available from the fire tv and my computer

Thanks for clarifying. I think I got it working on my end by configuring the 2nd router to use the first router's IP address as the gateway and local DNS server. Still not my preferred option (waiting for the PIA android app to function by itself), but it will work for now. Cheers.

wouldnt it be better to just load up DDWRT on a router and configure your vpn from there?

The best option avalaible is proxydroid.
Droidvpn is too slow.
Knowing this, if you still prefer using a vpn just let me know.

There is a thread on reddit that explains both using the OpenVPN client directly on FireTV or split-routing setup.

I'm sure you can adapt the instructions to suit dd-wrt. And if you can't, maybe you should switch over to OpenWRT.

I was able to get a split tunnel up and running on an ASUS RT-N66U router running Merlin Firmware. The VPN in Merlin is basically a port of OpenVPN in the tomato firmware implementation. The first step is to create the VPN tunnel and then you can setup the separate routes. For Private Internet Access (PIA). I used the following instructions to setup the tunnel:

Next I followed the instructions on this page for setting up a separate route for my FireTv. With this configuration my AFTV goes through the VPN tunnel and everything else goes through the normal Wan to my ISP. I followed the following instruction. This is tailored for ASUS routers, but the idea should not be too difficult to implement on and dd-wrt o tomato firmware.
For me this is a much cleaner solution than running something on the AFTV. It starts up and shuts down with the router, so I don' have worry about restarting it when I reboot on the AFTV or it using CPU and memory on the AFTV.

I have a fire tv and would like to have a backup to connect to the office. I have a Asus N900 which has asuswrt fimrware. How do I setup the client to connect I am getting bad config on mine when trying to connect. IPCP -timeout sending config-requests.

How to Block Root using UVerse Gateway?

I seem to have hit a bit of bad luck.
I have ATT Uverse with their 3800HGV-B Gateway, and a Netgear WNDR4300 behind it. As Uverse gateway wouldn't block the amzdigitaldownloads.edgesuite.net, softwareupdates.amazon.com domains, I "blocked" them on the Netgear router, and AFTV is connected via Ethernet to the Netgear box.
I ordered AFTV from Staples and was lucky to get a rootable version (v620), the above blocking was not effective and v820 got downloaded but didn't autoinstall. I went ahead and Rooted it using AFTV Utility, and made a mistake!! of not disabling OTA updates on AFTV. I was make a mistake and clicked in the OTA menu and lost all root
I tried another AFTV box, and this installed OTA and went straight to v520. I have used AFTV Utlity to block further updates hoping it might be easier to get Root on this version than v820.
My "blocking" on Netgear router is clearly not working.
I MAY give this another try w/ a new AFTV order but need to know how to block the sites using Uverse Router. I would really like to get a Rootable AFTV, as I want to have XBMC assessable via the home page, pair my Wii Remotes, etc.
Is there anyway to determine the stock FW version based on AFTV DSN Number.
Any guidance would be most appreciated.

First off, you should ask questions in the q&a forum. You get better results. But hold on, let me find my spoon...I don't use a netgear router so I can't tell u exactly what to do but you can probably Google it. On the router, you would need to look for parental controls or firewall areas. Use key word blocking or url blocking and block the required sites. They are listed around this forum somewhere. Then before you even power up your firetv, use your computer and try and download the software updates from Amazon. If you have your router set up correctly it should give you an error and not let you get them.

Thanks for taking the time to post a reply. The issue I have is wrt the interaction of UVerse Gateway and the 2nd Netgear Router behind it. As DNS is still handled by Uverse, (I think) Netgear router is not able to block it. I have that part configured. I will try and block the additional URL in the thread. Thanks again.

I don't use UVerse but I have a similar setup with a router behind a gateway. Can't you disable DNS on the gateway and configure the router to handle DNS?
I can't offer specifics on UVerse as I don't use it but on mine I just turn off DNS on the gateway and let my router handle it.

The easy way to do it is to open a free account on opendns.com and block from there. After root, follow this guide: http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-block-ota-update-for-amazon-fire-tv-and-keep-root-access/

Do you have DD-WRT installed on your Netgear? If so, I have the same setup (except I have a Time Warner cable in place of Uverse). Using the the DNSMasq on my Netgear does prevent DNS lookups. I can confirm that with my setup. The Netgear does not need to pass through the DNS look-up further upstream if you properly set up your Masq options in DD-WRT. I have used 2 routers with DD-WRT setup and both have worked as intended.
The reason I can say that it works is that my updates were blocked, but more importantly, any pings to the the blocked addresses from my laptop (hooked to the same Netgear router) results in the bogus IP I put (127.0.0.1). One thing you want to make sure to test your setup is to make sure that you ping it on a computer and make sure that you don't have any static DNS entries for your network adapter on your machine that you are testing with.
If you have DD-WRT installed or plan to install it, please update the thread and I can post some pictures of my setup.

Bingo. I had to do this when my router blocks were not working. Before I even plugged in my FTV, I tested the update web addresses in my browser. If I hadn't of done that, then I would've thought that my router block was working and lost root as soon as I plugged it in. Instead, I saw that my router blocks were eff'd, and signed up for OpenDNS. Confirmed the blocks in my browser...THEN, I plugged in the FTV for the first time.
Anytime you only get one shot at something, you really want to make sure that you get it right and don't miss.

Now that Staples has AFTV down to $84, I will try my luck again and use OpenDNS setup. Hopefully I can get a "rootable" FW version out of the box.
BTW, Uverse Gateway sucks

I took a look at a pdf of your 3800HGV-B Gateway modem and it apparently does bridge mode.
Bridge mode will make it act like a modem only, and let your router take care of DNS & all the other settings. It's how I have my home set up (I have comcast though, different hardware), as in my experience the modem/routers you get from your ISP usually sucks.
Might want to take a look into that.

Thanks Nyder. I managed to get 3800HGV into bridge mode and was able to block the Amazon sites from my computer. Will get to installing the new Fire TV (hopefully, it is rootable).
I wish AT&T had made this easy, it was PITA to get it working, w/ multiple factory resets needed to get it done right.

Fire TV sharing Kodi settings?

So I bought myself a fire TV and naturally it turned up with 51.1.4.0 pre-installed, so I wanted to at least block updates, but I'm using dd-wrt on my router which creates lots of fun when trying to do that, it was easier to just block all internet access to the device. I figured this would block all of their tracking and auto login stuff too.
My thinking was that I only wanted to use it for kodi/xbmc anyway, it mostly plays local files, but I could set up my file server to act as a proxy as well, put those settings into kodi so that only it can access the internet.
What was of no surprise is that it didn't work, I could get other computers to talk easily through the proxy but kodi on the fire TV didn't want to know.
However at some point, without changing any settings kodi started talking through the proxy, I installed youtube etc. etc. But then I figured out the delay.
The fire TV was actually blocking kodi from having a separate proxy, had seen the proxy settings, including password, and was now happily connecting itself to the internet through the proxy, the light even went white and everything.
Tin foil hat time, I assume their software is monitoring everything else kodi is doing as well?
Has anyone else find this kind of behaviour with their fire TV?

I don't know the answer to your question but the easiest and probably best way to do this is thru a free account on opendns.com.

I blocked updates through DNSMasq in the end, for anyone else having trouble with dd-wrt the settings that took me a while to find and sort it out was under DHCP settings.
Setup - Basic Setup - Network Setup, and under Network Address Server Settings you want to make sure the Use DNSMasq options are selected, then the Additional DNSMasq Options will work.
Of course, fireTV can still look for proxy settings to get around it apparently, even though I'm pretty sure they don't let you set the options yourself?

[Q] Connect to WiFi with browser login?

I have an Amazon Fire TV Stick. I use xfinity wifi hotspot which requires that I sign in on a browser that normally on a Windows or Android device, the browser will automatically open up and take me to a login page.
I sideloaded Firefox to my AFTV Stick but that doesn't seem to load up the page even if I try to connect to the wifi network.
Is there some kind of workaround for this? Thanks!

I would like to know this also as I plan on taking the stick with me when I travel and would be connecting to Hotel wifi

I can't speak to the OP's question but as to hotel access you can usually call the hotels Internet help line with your MAC address from your Fire TV and they can manually log you into the network.

Would also love to know if this is possible. I on a little vacation and took my fire tv with me, ready to watch away, but can't connect to the WiFi, since there is a browser login ...

The AFTV should say something like "Connected with a problem" or something to that effect. Then I back out and go to Applications, and launch a browser, in my case Chrome, and the hotspot router should direct your browser to the login page, where you can enter the needed credentials.
However, of course you would need to have a browser installed. Works most of the time though some hotels have routers that for some reason won't auto-direct you to the login page until you manually type in a website address to go to.

Same - just did this in fact. Had to use my phone as a hotspot to install a browser (lighting) first.
I don't think it would be possible on the firestick unless amazon added some browsers to their store.

Why? You could side load a browser on the stick just the same I assume.

I side loaded Dolphin browser onto my AFS. Seems to work well.
Update : when trying to enter address or url, the search dialog box comes up. It starts to load the Web page but immediately closes the browser. So for me, Dolphin doesn't seem to be working.
What browsers are you all using successfully to browse Web pages?

To the original poster, I know exactly what you're talking about. What I had to do was plug in a mouse so I could click.
Reloaded the page a lot of times and it took forever, but you only have to enter this once.

I went and found this free software for my laptop (Virtual router..google it.....wont let me post link since i'm new) and now fire tv works like a charm. i was having the same exact problem. It's pretty straight forward. Hope this helps and good luck.

You can use the built-in web browser in the ES File explorer to go to the login page. The ES file explorer is free and available on the amazon app store.

I have Chrome side loaded in my AFS. Works well. Able to get to YouTube website and play videos easily.

Configure Wifi without Remote Control

Ok, I am in a hotel and have tried to plug-in my Fire TV Stick, but it doesn't find my home wifi - no surprise - darn! I've forgot the standard Remote Control!!!! ARGHHH
So I configure my phone as a wifi hot spot and name it as my home wifi (with the same password) - voila! I can connect with the Fire TV app for Android but as soon as I go to reconfigure the wifi to use the hotels wifi it disconnects and I can no longer access it at all from the Android app.
Now, is there a way to reconfigure the wifi-settings manually either by plugging it into a computer via USB or some other app that will emulate the stock remote that comes with the Fire TV?

If you are using a wifi remote control app like Wukong Romote, your phone and the AFS has to be on the same network for your phone to be able to find it.

Use a second smartphone or tablet with firetv to reconfigure the stick to the hotel WiFi
For the "not long enough, want to read" explanation -
As the OP said, configure 1st smartphone as a WiFi hotspot with identical name and password as home WiFi.
Firetv should automatically connect you this when powered up.
Connect 2nd smartphone to this network (probably will automatically connect as it will 'see' it as its home network)
Use the firetv app on 2nd smartphone to navigate to system/settings/network (not exact steps but you should be able you find it) and reconfigure the firetv stick to connect to the guest/hotel WiFi.
Once connected turn off WiFi hotspot on 1st phone and connect it to guest/hotel WiFi.
Start firetv app, search for firetv and connect.
Discover that most content is geographically controlled and cannot be viewed and settle in for a season of Man in the High Castle.

@finkle - this was a good idea, but sadly as soon as the other wifi is selected on the fire stick it changes to the hotel wifi and opens the browser page to enter the credentials, which simultaneously disconnects the remote app! So close ;-(

The network was diffrent,....so we changed hotspot on phone, ( to the previous netwrk we had...and I got a diffrent phone...and with the second phone,, I was able to conect with the phone ap remote...[theseconv

ok i have done everything exactly as you have said, but unfortunately my fire tv is not automatically connecting....Any thoughts on why? I know i reconfigured the hot spot correctly because i disconnected a 2nd smart phone from the current wifi and it automatically found our home network and connected...

What i typically do is connect my FireTV stick to the USB port on my computer, i can then manually send keyevents via ADB to connect the device through the hotel portals, yes it is tedious but once you get it connected you should be able to connect to it via Fire TV remote App on your phone. you can then plug it back into the wall and when it reboots it should auto connect to wifi this time.
P.S. this will only work if you have already previously enabled developer mode and allow adb connection on your fireTV stick.

I was bought a firestick by a well-meaning friend, who set it up for me... About 18 months ago. I have since moved house, and the move has meant the remote is misplaced.. So I downloaded an app that I can use as a remote. However the firestick is still linked to the old wifi, of which I have no idea what the username or password was....
So am I buggered? A useless firestick?

All tvs have a cec option under settings. Google search cec settings and it'll help ya. It lets you control hdmi plug ins with the regular tv remote. Tried it on one of my tvs and wouldn't work. Tried it on another tv in the house witch is different brand and it worked. I was able to set the wifi back up and then was able to use the fire stick remote app on my phone. Good luck

Problem Solved
Hold down the home button on your Amazon firestick remote until you get a popup on your tv screen that the remote is connected. This will take 5-10 seconds. No internet necessary. Cheers!!

This CEC on my visio worked perfectly. we haven't been able to use one of our firesticks for quite a while now. thank you!! and no... holding down the select button on a diff remote does not work..

Go into the settings on your tv and enable CEC. I have a Vizio and it worked for me.
In your search engine type: How to Enable HDMI-CEC on Your TV, and Why You Should then click on the HowtoGeek link

In case anyone runs in to this in the future (including myself).
If your stick is rooted then you can manually configure the WiFi over ADB/USB in the file /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf

My situation is that one day i switched my tv input from blue ray player to fire tv stick as ive done for a long time, but this time when itd boot up it would hold on the home screen and the 3 dots, and then network connection lost. But nothing has changed with my wifi, all my other devices still connect to wifi just fine. And i dont have the remote and have been using my phone to navigate my fire tv stick. Any advice?
Now its bootlooping after it shows network connection lost for about 1min then reboots.

Could provide steps as to how to reconfigure Wi-Fi setting in the Fire Stick via ADB?
