Will wireless charging work with Otterbox Defender case? - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Accessories

Has anyone ever had experience with Samsung smartphones charging wirelessly through Defender's thicker casing?
I always had to find the sweet spot with my Note 7 and much thinner cases on last year's Samsung fast wireless charger in order for it to work.

Did you email and ask them?
NM, I wrote them and asked them.
When I get a response, I'll post it.
I'm not getting this case.

I think hearing back from Otterbox would possibly be a more prudent answer.

Unless Otterbox has included some type of conductive feature in the layers between.........
I am trying to be optimistic.
Hopefully the $20 cost difference is indicative of more coils since charging speed is same between Samsung's 2016 vs 2017 models

I heard back from Otterbox:
Thank you for your e-mail. Good news, I do show that it does work with wireless charging. Let us know if there is anything else we can help you with. Have a great day!

Fingers crossed. Bought Defender screenless edition along with two other accessories from Best Buy to get 25% discount.
Description of new convertible Samsung charger says multiple
coils for potrait or landscape charging. Not available for purchase yet through most retailers. Have two other accessories saved in cart waiting for it to become available

If worked with my S7 defender case as Well as my lifeproof case. I got my s8+ defender in last week, it feels thinner than my s7 defender. I'll have to test when it gets here, when it ships.

I know it works with the strada case, not sure about the defender. Look up if the S7 defender case could wirelessly charge, that should give you a hint.

Considering I asked Otterbox specifically about the Defender case AND posted their positive response that wireless charging WILL work with this case, not sure what the mystery or hoping is if the company themselves confirmed it will work.

Wireless charging works with ALL Otterbox cases.

Considering BIG companies like SAMSUNG never misconstrue the facts to sell more products............
Hint. Hint.
NOTE 7 battery fiasco.
Why would a smaller company like Otterbox?

big companies like samsung can ride out the fallout financially... smaller companies like otterbox probably don't want to have to pay for all the returns and the PR backlash.

there was 1 case that was rated to work with wireless charging (I Think it was otterbox) that i saw while looking at the youtube reviews, and yes it did work wih wireless charging, after picking it up and putting it down like 3-4x because it was such a weak connection that it was really hard to get it just right.
I didnt see your comment earlier, but I'd still beware of that, the defender case is thicker than usual.

FYI, S8+ Defender case WILL NOT work in upright position with the wireless charger. I've tried two of them and neither worked. Works fine laying flat, but once it it put in the upright position it will start charging for about 5 seconds and stop. Take off the rubber outer case and it works fine. Seems like there's too much padding at the bottom

Ya, I think I'm going to return them. I've gotten in contact with them on social media and they say all their cases have been tested and it DOES work wirelessly when laid flat. I think they just didn't test this particular scenario. Sad, because otherwise I really like this case.

I just tried my defender with the Samsung wireless charger stand and mine worked standing up.

I have defender on S8+ and charges fine on my spigen upright charger. Now when it comes to my iottie wireless car charger/mount it's hit or miss. The home charger has 3 coils and is stationary but the iottie has one and lots of vibration from car.
Anyone know of a good QI kit that would fit between the polycarbonate and TPU of the otterbox so my car charger would also work. Or would attaching a QI receiver to my s8+ damage the phone since it already has QI built in?

Here's my experience with it. I do have the 8+ and a defender case. Without the case I can just plop my phone anywhere in the upright (samsung dual coil) wireless pad and it will start charging. With the case on I have to search a little for the sweet spot. Hope that helps.

[Q] Motorola Xoom Portfolio Case

I have seen the new accessories released from Motorola, but I think that the Portfolio Case just looks hideous. Has anyone seen a portfolio case similar to the official Apple iPad case (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Apple®+-+iPad™+Case/1271742.p?id=1218246670763&skuId=1271742)?
Thanks in advance.
EDIT: While doing my research on the portfolio case and reading your comments, I have been thoroughly convinced to wait on the case soon to be released by zoogue in March of 2011. There is a youtube video on it. It looks pretty good. It is made of leather and allows you to view at nearly any angle due to the use of velcro.

Ok, just purchased my Xoom and Moto Portfolio case. Have to say I'm disappointed with the case. Seems like Moto didnt fully think this one out. The build quality is very good and does what it says. Issues are:
1. You cannot charge the Xoom and have it in one of the viewing setups like monitor. In other words you cannot charge and work with a BT keyboard.
2. You cannot charge the device while the portfolio is closed. It has to be opened to access any of the ports
3. Folding the case back covers the on/off button.
4. Edges are hard plastic and seem like they'll leave wear marks on your Xoom after a while.
I got it too, and it's pretty lame. As mentioned above, you can't charge the device while it's propped up. That's the biggest WTF.
I see it as a very temporary solution. I want the tablet in some sort of protective gear, but as soon as something better comes along, I'm sending it to ebay.
you guys are being polite, the portfolio case blows.
the bottom corners have these nubs that jut out and are supposed to 'grip' the bottom, but they don't, and it generally just feels like they didn't actually have the full dimensions of the product before this was manufactured.
I even got out a xacto and cut these nubs off, hoping it would fit better, but it still pretty much sucks. Going to take it back, nubs gone or not. It's a shame because I want a fold back cover just in case I drop this, but this is NOT what I had in mind.
its kinda ok for me (for now) till hopefully otterbox comes out with a case for it. as atoy74 said, it sucks coz it has no opening or something for charging and syncing while closed.
The case really is a piece of crap. I'm constantly worried about the little nubs permanently scratching the Xoom's body and it doesn't close comfortably either. Getting the Xoom out of the case is a pain in the ass too because you're again worried about the body being scratched. It's also a lot heavier than I expected and adds a noticeable amount of weight. Also, not being able to charge while tilting is ridiculously stupid. I was looking forward to using this because of the nice tilting options, one of the few things Motorola got right with this case, but using it has me on the lookout for better alternatives.
i wish i read this before buying it. The case sucks squid ballzzzz
I really like the case. The charging issues you guys mentioned exist because this is a tablet, and is meant to be docked.
My issue is that when I close it.. I feel like I'm going to break a nail opening it. It should have a tab to open it up. Though the price is perhaps a little high for what it is.
never mind I love this case its perfect
This cases is indeed bad. They used way to much plastic. I'll be keeping my eye out for a nice third party case.

What the hell are you talking about? I have owned an Ipad, Galaxy Tab and now the Xoom. I've never had this problem before and I've always used portfolio style cases. Access to the unit's ports should always be accessible and I shouldnt have to buy a $50 dock to do that.

Protective Case Terrible design
Hello All , I have to agree on all point the case is not planed out right . What the HELL I can't charge and close the unit . The unit is awesome, but until someone finds a third party case protector what else can we do or does anyone have another idea or approach to protect their investment.
when you lay the xoom in the case flipped it directs the speaker sound towards you. Most flip cases make it hard to use the device with all of its accessories. The case gives excellent protection and makes watching movies awesome.

I'm not saying the case doesn't have its strong points. But, the negatives are huge. This morning I already noticed wear marks on my Xoom where the plastic tabs rub. COME ON, it's only been 24 hours. There's no justification for a $40 device to reduce the value of a $800 one.
I can't wait for third party cases to start arriving. I've had wonderful experiences with Encase, Scosche, Seidio and Macally. Hopefully they'll have something soon-ish.
I think the case the OP was talking about is the OEM ipad case. I do like it and wish there was one like for the xoom.

Just decided to hop in as I am working with some third party people to either 'get' or develop some accesories for the Xoom. I've been working with them for several months now on accessories for the gTab and it seems to have truned into a pretty solid relationship.
Im hoping to be able to get a few things for the Xoom owners. As SOON as I have get any word I'll keep you posted as well as list something in the 'marketplace' (have to be potically correct )

Folio Case

I got the Otterbox for my Xoom when it first arrived, having 2 kids and chucking it in and out of the car I was wanting something hardy to protect the device.
However after a few months now its a bit too bulky for what I want.
Does anyone here have a decent folio job they can recommend thats protective enough without the bulk?
Preferably in the UK, I like the look of the Zoogue one with its handstrap come headrest strap but to get one and get it shipped over here is going to cost £50..

Mines just turned up, you can have the device in the case but as the ports are covered you have to have the case open to plug the charger in, and because the charger is at the bottom you cant really have the Xoom on charge and use it at the same time, unless you have it in your hands, on that point the Otterbox wins as you can put it in its stand thing unside down and have the power cable in what is then the top, folio cases dont let you do that :/
Here's hoping the Xoom2 has its power in the side because with this folio you can access the power, camera, speakers, sim/sd slot, the only slots you cant access while its shut are the bottom ones, might not be an issue for the majority of users but tbh you would of thought that someone in Motorola's "asthetics" department would of tested it with at least there own accessory line....
I ended up getting this for my wife's Xoom and it works well while being much thinner than it looks in the pictures. Here is a link if you need:
http://www.amazon.com/Quality-Leath...1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1321142040&sr=1-1
I bought the AYL case off Amazon. The current version has the bottom ports exposed.
I originally had the moto folio case, but I definitely prefer the AYL one, not just because the ports are exposed, but because it seems to be decent leather.

Can you wirelessly charge with a case on?

Is it possible to put a case on the Pixel 3 XL and still use wireless charging? Will only certain cases work? None?
Thanks.
Probably depends on the case. Even on the Google website it shows one charging on the stand with a case (fabric on). Looking at Spigen's site some of them say clearly they support wireless charging while it's omitted for others...

Depends on the case. The ones that can will say so. For example some of the Spigens can and it says so. Others say nothing about it and they can't.
Yes you definitely can as long as there isn't anything blocking the connection through the case like a magnet. Even externally using a pop sockets you can't wireless charger. So the answer is yes it'll work through mostly anything and any case unless there is an object in between
During the Google presentation they said you can charge even with a case
Good to know. Thanks for the replies.
I have never had an issue wirelessly charging with a case on. With any phone and even using an external wireless charger adapter
Charging and charging well are two different things. As an example my Note 8 took forever to charge with the leather case on and had to be set on the charger just exactly right to charge at all. Case off and you could just toss it on the pad and it worked. Thick leather has been the worst in my experience, TPU seems to have little effect if any over charging sans case. In the latter case those were all lightweight close fitting cases, might be different with the thicker full protection style cases like a defender. Haven't tried any other materials with wireless charging.
I went with the "all around" protection and go the Otterbox Defender case... it unfortunately doesn't work well with the Pixel Stand.. even with the rubber outter shell off it doesn't charge consistantly. It will charge, then stop... I'm getting a Spigen Neo Hybrid which..is supposed to work with Wireless charging.

Otterbox Defender and Galaxy Buds using Powershare

Can someone please try using the Otterbox Defender case using Wireless Powershare with the Galaxy Buds and please tell me if it works. I have the Defender already but waiting on my Galaxy Buds..
Thank you!
I'd imagine if the defender can wireless charge, then the buds should work also
I have a case that is significantly thinner than the otterbox. My Gear S3 frontier wouldn't charge. Took my case off and it works.
Just because a wireless charge can reach through a case doesn't mean the output on the 10+ is as strong.
Thanks for the replies...
I traded in my Defender for the Defender Pro because the back seems flatter and I was able to charge my Galaxy S9+ (that has a Otherbox that I took off to test) and it was able to wireless Powershare.. I'm guessing the buds might work too.. I'll find out when the buds come in..

It should work since both, the S10 and Digiflavor, use the Qi standard.
It won't charge anything with the Defender. That's what I'm currently using and it won't charge my watch or my galaxy buds. It barely wirelessly charges itself with my Duo charger. Sometimes it charges other times a toast notification pops up telling me to take the case off

I own the s pen case and would steer people away from it. It has a very cheap feel (compared to the leather flip or aramid case) and is very clunky in practice. Great in theory, bad in practice. Although, you can take the entire s pen holder off the entire case and the case itself will sit a little more flat/flush on the table/surface you are working on. I actually just took the entire S pen section off of the case and carry it separately.

Yea the flip case is awful. I honestly cant believe it ever made it to production. Ive owned a dozen Samsung phones and tablets and have the official samsung cases for all of them for some devices i have multiple oem designed cases and this fold3 case is by far the worst of them all. Its very awkward, adds a ton of bulk, is unatractive and has a front cover thats only purpose is to keep your front screen from getting scratched in your pocket. which is ok, but how about at least engineering it to be a kickstand as well like nearly every other case theyve designed with a front cover?... or how about making an s view window so i dont have to open it to see the outer screen? Or putting some lcds in there to show the time and notifications? Its $80 afterall. How about a little magnet to keep it from flopping all over the place?
It comes with the $50 fold edition spen. That's the only justification for its steep pricetag. But Its almost as if Samsung said for $30 extra that the case cost you will not receive any kind of intellectual property. The best part of the cases design is that the spen holder portion is detachable allowing you to keep the case at home in a drawer.
Admittingly i dont like cases too much these days. I used to purchase them the day i bought the device all the time and always from the oem. Then i started to feel lime the engineering behind the phones are designed to not use a case. And devices to look and feel much nicer without cases imo. I know there sre some nice sleek cases iut there cuz i own some but whenever i think about a case i picture a soccer mom busting out a neoen pink case that has a cover with all her credit cards lining the inside...and i dont want to be associated with that.
So i started buying skins because despite the sleek feel of phones most of my drops were due to how slippery an all glass square device is. Id set it down only to hear a crash 30 seconds later because it was slowly sliding of the arm of my couch or the keyboard of my pc, ect...and those were great. Honestly with gorilla glass and a nice 3mm skin you get a fair bit of drop protection. The skin help prevent already tempered glass from stress cracks due to weight or impact. Obviously its going to be less protection than pretty much any kind of case but its usually enough protection for a relatively careful user imo.
But i have gone back to cases with tablets and now even these larger phones mostly out of the desire to have a kickstand for it. Thats something a skin cant do. And though i have stands on my desk and night stand and a dock in my car i still often in need of a place to set my device where i can watch it without holding it. And this POS case doesnt offer that. Its really a terribly designed case that Samsung should be ashamed of.

Unless you are a Design student you may not use the Stylus too much and will ultimately lie in a drawer. I've been using the phone for a while now and my thumbs and fingertips are working fine. (Never quite used the S Pen on my Tab either.) Just my advice.

I'm accustomed to daily note taking during meetings, quick grocery runs, etc. Editing videos and photos is another valuable s pen benefit. I also like the convenience of syncing my notes across my devices (Fold3 & Tab S7 Plus). It's a great tool once you start implementing its uses. However, you have to use it to understand. On another hand, if you never used it you wouldn't care but yeah, the s pen is not just for design students, lol.
i personally think the best case for protection is the "supcase" Unicorn Beetle. it offers great overall protection as well as a spen holder built into the spine of the case. not to mention the case has a built in screen protector for the front screen and you cant even tell its there. ive been rocking mine for a month now worth the $90 bucks i got into it. oh forgot to mention it also has a built in kick stand. and you can still wireless charge through the case.
