I had the same thing happen. On first boot, wifi would work perfectly until I disconnected and tried reconnecting again, it would connect but nothing would happen.
You'll also notice that when this happens, the wifi icon and signal strength icon will no longer change its colour. For some reason it only happened the first day I installed CM7, but after multiple reboots, installation of some apps, everything works fine now.
edit: I also changed my governor to SMARTASS2, (122MHz min, 806Mhz max), but I don't know if that had anything to do with it.

I saw your thread about yours freezing at 806Mhz.. the only thing I can think of is maybe you have a different CPU revision that doesn't overclock too well.. or maybe different RAM which also doesn't allow for higher overclocking.
Got to wipe over this until its finished. cant believe im the only one.
Am I the only one with the WiFi problem.
no mate i have them too! not just wifi but mobile data also it says its on but does nothing and also the colour doesnt change sometimes, same for overclock anything past 600 freezes up.
We should port this conversation over to development (Cyanogenmod 7 thread) - since it appears to be an issue specific to that ROM(?)
I'm having the same issue - running Alquez Cyanogenmod 7 (beta 1)
It's working great. Running smartass2 min 122 max 806 with no problems...
...except that either wifi AND mobile data can theoretically be connected, yet the browser and other programs/syncing can't connect to the internet.
i cant post in development i think i need at least 10 posts lol..
i know its silly but the rules must be obeyed. i just unistalled awaiting the fix.
I tried everything i know, but no joy.

Same problem with me as regarding posting in development..
And same problem with internet connection switching on and off without warning on cm7. was totally chuffed i got it untill this happened. Both the cell signal and the wifi/3g would go grey instead of green when connected..
Got frustrated, changed to tmous ROM, and now hae a different problem; need new radio, 3g not working!
Hopefully cm7 gets solved soon...although apart from my own issue with radio reflash(i think thats the problem?) I really like TMOUS...it is very sharp, and a lot smoother than the ported cm7, in my opinion..
Anyone find a solution, post it!!! Thanks..
Here s one thing i "think" helps...trial and error, as usual...
1; Keep wifi turned off, only keep 3g connection on.
2; Install 3g watchdog (I got Pro version) . This is an app that monitors the 3g connection, and i am inclined to believe may help keep it active. Now, mine is greatly improved with connection, thanks to these factors. Oh, and a few reflashes and a few reboots...
Hope it helps? It has helped me...
Is anyone else experiencing this? This has happened to me with a couple of different roms; sfhub's rooted FF18, datajosh's FF18 rooted deodexed rom, and PhantomHacker's ICS FF18 Blazer rom. After I flash a custom recovery like agat's or chris41g's my wifi start not working properly. It will connect fine and work for a little while. I haven't quite pinpointed when it stops working, but after sometime the wifi will just stop bringing down data. This may be happening when the phone goes to sleep. Regardless, it will be connected to the router, but no data is flowing. I need to turn off and then turn the WiFi back on to get it working again. I've tried changing the wifi to disconnect when the phone is asleep, that sort of fixes things, but I'd rather have my phone always connected.
So, do other experience this? Is this a common problem I just have to deal with? Is there a thread somewhere that I'm missing that will help me fix this?
Right now, I'm running an the AOKP milestone 6 rom that came with the TWRP custom recovery and wifi is working properly, but I'm thinking I want to go back to a TW rom but want to figure out this WiFi issue. Any help would be awesome. Thanks!
I'm having the same problem, but only on my home network as far as I can tell. I found a thread elsewhere that proposed it was a problem with using WPA PSK encryption on 802.11g networks and a bug with ICS. The suggested solution was to change your encryption to WPA2 PSK. I did this and thought it fixed the problem, but it has returned a day later.
This doesn't happen when I'm at work, so I think it is some setting on my home network that ICS doesn't like.
I also experience this problem. I'll try messing around with my router tonight. I feel like I also don't have problems at school. So its worth a shot. I'll let you know how it goes.

So, I actually wasn't able to mess around with my router last night. But I'm wondering if this could be a router issue and not a security issue. Out of curiosity, what kind of router are you using? I'm using an old WRT54GL that I really like and suits my needs fine. I just can't believe out of everyone on XDA with an E4GT that most everybody isn't running WPA security of their routers. Similar to you, when I'm at school I'm not experiencing this issue. I'm wondering if I should buy a router from Walmart or something and see if it fixes the issue, return it if it doesn't. Thoughts?

I'm experiencing the exact same issue after loading the FF18 OTA update from stock recovery. Factory reset after update did not correct the issue, Sprint support has not been overly helpful- and went as far to say that correcting the issue may require replacement of the phone, and that I shouldn't accept the ICS update on the new phone if I go that route (not doing that).
Possible Solution
Okay, today I swapped out my wireless router with a dual band wireless N router from netgear. I've had it installed for a couple of ours and so far my WiFi on my phone is working as it should. I've made no changes to my phone. So, this may be a router issue. I don't know anything about hardware, or why this would be happening, but this may be a solution. I'll post an update if the WiFi ever acts up again.

I apologize for resurrecting this thread but, for posterity, i'm also running a WRT54GL v1.1 and have the same problem on two different E4GTs running FF18. I have tried the 4.30.15 cisco firmware after factory reset along with tomato 1.28 (with different SSIDs), both had the same issue (i.e. wifi seems to 'hang' after a few hours. the notification bar shows the wifi signal strength, as well as being connected, but unable to do anything online. this issue only appears to happen when using this router.), which suggests a possible hardware incompatibility. the current fix is to diable/reenable wi-fi, which will work again for a few hours. The router works perfectly will all other devices.
I will poke around a bit tonight and post results if I find anything
UPDATE: I apologize for the wait, but may have a workaround. The phones have since been updated to FH13 and both still had the same problem.
I'm currently using Linksys/Cisco firmware Ver.4.30.15 for my WRT54GL v1.1. In the wireless security section of the web interface, I have changed the security type from WPA2 Personal to just WPA Personal. No other settings were changed. Just to rule out a DHCP issue, I set an IP statically on the phone but this may not be necessary. Since the change I have not had the "connected but not really" problem as described above.
I have had a limited time to test the change, but if the problem persists at least it's an improvement. I will keep the thread updated with what I find.
Yes please keep us posted if you find anything with the settings on the router. i have the same router as you ther WRT54GL and I am experencing the same wifi connected yet disconnected bug. Have to turn it off then back on to make it work right.
I have the same issue. Not sure what the issue is but I never had any problems on Gingerbread.

+1 I too never had any issues with GB 2.3.6. The wifi problem started with ICS FF18 and now too with FH13
so, I've read around here on the XDA forum about problems with wifi connectivity where we have full bars for wifi but they are gray and you are not getting out. many describe my situation but I've not seen any real solutions...
my problem is that I can connect to my wifi router without issue but then a random amount of time later, sometimes fairly quickly and sometimes it's hours later, I will pick up the phone and see full bars but they are gray and I'm not getting out. I can try opening a terminal window and pinging the gateway/dns servers and can't even reach the gateway.
things I have tried:
- turned off MAC filtering on the wifi AP
- switched from a 5 GHZ wifi on the AP to 2.4 GHZ net on the AP and vice versa
- manually set the phone wifi preference to one or the other (5 or 2.4)
- battery pull on the phone
- delete network settings for my AP and reconfigure
I have not yet tried a static IP config on the phone but I can easily try that... {edited to add} well, I tried static config and that didn't help at all...
one other tidbit of info, I have a work Blackberry with wifi and it never loses wifi connectivity so this is a problem unique to my Nexus.
I'm running Cyanogen 10.0.0-toro and no, I haven't tried a full wipe and reload yet.
thoughts or suggestions?
I'm not trying to threadjack here, but I just wanted to share my experiences.
I've been have the exact same thing happen to my phone (Nexus maguro). I've tried every JB rom I could find, several different kernels and my wifi eventually always goes grey on me. All network activities stop. I'm back on stock everything right now and it still happens.
It happens on my home wifi as well as work wifi.
I'm about to puttstock ICS on my phone and try that out for a couple days.
Anyway, good luck with your problems, i'm going to follow this thread in hopes you'll get a solution that may help me.
If I do figure anything out i'll post back.

seems that this is a topic that has been posted on a bit over time with no real single culprit or fix. I'll post back if I figure anything out... I know in the Cyanogen thread, I saw info that stated that the MAC address of the phone was changing and I'm going to try and determine if that is happening to mine.
I have the same issue. Sometimes even when i pick up the phone, if i look fast enough i see that the Wi-Fi bars weren't even there! Thats only 1 out of 5 times though. The other time its usually just grey bars. Sometimes it actually will click back and they'll flash to blue and grey 2-3 times and then go solid blue. Then sometimes like you, they'll stay grey. I've tried everything too...reverting to stock, Different kernels, ROMs, routers, static IP, 2.4 or 5ghz, full auto mode. The only fix that makes it a little more reliable, is using Wi-Fi PM Fast. But even that, is not reliable. I'd say its about 50% reliable then, for a huge sacrfice in battery life. For me i've noticed this started to happen with 4.2. Before that i never had a problem. All other devices though no problem. My Nexus 7 is just fine. But the galaxy nexus, no matter what router or where i am, the Wi-Fi is totally unreliable. For me, it happens within 2 minutes that it will disconnect most times. Then 1 in 10 times it'll be fine for 10 hours.
In all honesty, i've given up. Just come to deal with it. Use mobile networks when i'm not needing to download. I can download files and stream music just fine too. If there is traffic going through, it never disconnects. But when its just sitting there without traffic, it disconnects, or, loses connection to google servers i should say.
well that's not good to hear...
I installed stock 4.0.4 a couple days ago and have not had my wifi go grey on me yet.

yeah, I love Cyanogen so not willing to go back to stock... waiting for them to finish 10.1 and I guess I'll see how it behaves then.
Hi all,
Just to say that I have the same problem. I have been upgraded from ICS to 4.2 and nothing had happened but I had to downgrade to 4.1.1 (AOKP Build 4) due to other issues and after that I started notice the WiFi problem.
At first I thought it was when the screen went off, but I has happened with screen on too. I have to turn WiFi off and the back on to connect properly again, very annoying.
As I said I started noticing this after I downgraded, but then again, I had used AOKP 4.1.1 before without this issue. I think that it is time to change my phone :/

I'm on Muzzy 4.2.2 and I'm currently having the same problem. It's not a new problem since I remember having it months ago (disabled my phone's WiFi because I kept missing emails and other notifications - grew tired of dealing with it). I thought it was my router, so I swapped it with a newer one recently, but it carried forward (old router was TRENDnet Draft N and the new one is ASUS RT-N66U).
I would like to know how to properly troubleshoot this problem.
I'm glad I didnt have to create a thread for this. I have been facing this problem quite a lot. I can confirm that WiFi works absolutely fine until 4.1.2, whether it is stock or CM10 (I havent tried the other ROMs yet). I have faced this problem only from 4.2. It still exists on 4.2.2. Happens on all the ROMs I have tried till now including CM10.1 nightly as well as the stock factory image.
When the phone is sleeping, it seems to lose WiFi connectivity and when woken up, the WiFi bars is grey though it is full. If I am very lucky, it will turn blue automatically. Most of the times, I have to switch WiFi off and back on for it to connect properly.
Anyone knows the root cause for this? In case this has been discussed in any other thread?

have you posted this information over in any of the threads where the developers are working such as Cyanogen in an effort to bring this issue to the forefront for more visibility?
I have had those wifi problems with every android version and rom I had on my GNex as far as I can remember.
Sometimes it will be able to reconnect but sometimes I have to disable and re-enable wifi to get it back.
I too thought that it might have been my crappy router as I have had multiple problems with it over the years (some Linksys router).
This is really annoying because it won't receive any e-mails until I randomly decide to have a look at my phone. :/

trust me, I understand your frustration... some days, I can go almost all day without loosing wifi data throughput and other days it won't last 10 minutes without going to gray bars.
unfortunately, no one is sharing any fixes which tells me that no one has a good handle on the problem.
Same issue for me on stock Android 4.2.2. Leave WiFi on overnight and when I wake up its connected to WiFi but gray bars...

i just know ever since moving to a 4.2.2 kernel that has the 4.2.2 drivers my wifi has been stable. I know there was a post in the anarkia thread with the ak kernel that had the drivers. but i believe most any 4.2.2 kernel would have them implemented. i do have the newest bootloader and radio too. but i know as soon add i got the 4.2.2 drivers all issues were resolved wifi wise. of course i think if you have a 4.2.2 kennel you'll have them.

Hi!
I know there are plenty of threads about the wifi on this phone, I've read every one of them, posted in many places and have had no good outcome.
Here is my (lengthy) story.
Had annoying wifi bugs on stock 4.1.2, seemingly general lack of interest from the phone in connecting to wifi, but would generally connect after a reboot of both modem+phone+ disabling PSM (even then, not always )
6 months on stock go by, thought flashing a custom rom would fix everything and all would be well again, so I flashed PA.
An even more annoying bug showed up,
Turn wifi on > doesn't automatically connect, so I manually go to the wifi settings page and try connecting.
Before trying to connect - Full signal.
While trying to connect - Goes down to one bar while connecting > fails > then goes back to full signal.
Does occasionally connect, but it's rare. Rebooting both phone and the modem does nothing at all, seems to have a mood of it's own.
It's not just my wifi, but wifi at college too, other devices connect to the same access point just fine.
What would fix this? Will pretty much try most things now,I tried flashing NEAK too.
I don't have a data plan either, so my phone is basically useless without wifi, I've resigned to using my laptop all the time.
Thank you for reading this so far, I'd be thankful for ANY advice.
TL;DR :- Annoying wfi bug, tried every 'solution' I've heard of, nothing worked, never buying a Samsung again :crying:
(Attached images of the phenomenon)
UPDATE:- Just like stock, it will only connect if I am a foot away from the router, irrespective of how much signal I have. Even if I have a full signal elsewhere, it won't connect

We meet again!
Like mentioned in the post, the only reason I flashed an aosp based ROM was in the desperate hope it'd rid the phone of its WiFi problem.
Thought a custom ROM would do what Samsung refuses to do.
Hope someone has a valid solution for this.

Anyone?
I forgot I already had the range issue for quite a while, even on stock.
I had tried everything, including static IP, wps, and whatever else was stated to work.
Does anyone know of a working solution to this? Is this a hardware/software issue?

The WiFi on my phone disconnects for about 2 seconds (every 15 minutes or so) for no reason at all. I have the same problem on EVERY single Android Pie ROM such as Lineage, Pixel Experience, AOSiP, AEX, etc. When the phone is in sleep mode the Wi-Fi will NOT reconnect, which means I constantly miss important notifications such as messages from friends. Also, when watching YouTube I keep seeing a message pop up saying 'Back Online' due to the WiFi disconnecting.
I have seen a couple of people on the forums with the same issue, but a solution has not yet been found. I know this is NOT a problem with my home broadband because I don't experience the same WiFi dropouts on other devices.
If anyone knows a solution to this problem, or just has a suggestion, PLEASE let me know as I would REALLY appreciate it.

Hi. Thanks for the response. I will keep that in mind, I can't remember whether I tried Carbon ROM before.
However I have to think this problem is related to something more specific than just ROM, because if this problem was present on all installations of these popular ROMs like Lineage, AEX and Pixel Experience (as I have tested in my own experience) then we would likely see a lot more complaints about it on the forums. So I think the issue is related to something to do with a certain setting or configuration.
It is a VERY frustrating problem because I can't leave my phone for 15 minutes without it disconnecting from WiFi and loosing access to notifications.
Not that this will help but in the past I had issues with Samsung OEM ROMs I flashed using ODIN (equivalent to our QFIL) a firmware from another country and for some reason even though technically my phone WAS compatible, I would have similar results to yours. If I were you I would back up all your data and try a few different QFIL to see if you have any luck. I flashed the LATEST QFIL (not using miflash etc) and have never had any issues with my zuk

Thanks for that. I agree it might be the cause of the issue, something like what you describe. It would make sense because I have only found 2 other people on XDA with the same issue, and the problem happens on every ROM I have tried. I have owned the ZUK Z2 since 2016 and only now, in these past 2-3 months, am I experiencing these problems with Wi-Fi disconnecting.
From what I can see the latest QPST is 3.5.389 ST, so I will try flashing that next week (once I'm back from vacation) and see what happens!

Well, I tried flashing the 3.5.389 ST QPST and then flashing LineageOS 16.0 on top of that, but the problem is still the same. Wi-Fi disconnects for a few seconds whilst using the device, and also whilst the device is in sleep mode. Except when it disconnects in sleep mode, it will NOT reconnect meaning I miss all kinds of notifications until I manually check my device.
The frustrating thing is I don't know for sure whether it's something to do with my home broadband or router. But all of my other devices (such as Windows laptop) STAY connected at the same time my ZUK looses connection. So I have to assume it is software-related on the ZUK.
If I can't solve this soon I will just go out and buy a new phone. I can't deal with missing important notifications. It is sad because I really liked this phone and have kept it for 2½ years. I don't understand why this problem suddenly started because it was fine before.

After you flashed the QPST did you boot into the rom and try using oem zuk to see if it resolved your issue? Apparently that fixes quite a few problems but requires actually booting into the rom. If you flashed an official QTSP using deep flash (not miflash) anf it STILL has that problem then it must be internal hardware. Guessing you have tried connecting to someone elses wifi and it does the same?

Thanks. Well, sometimes I visit a relatives house where I can connect to a different router, but usually I am not there long enough to test whether the phone stays connected. But in response to your other question, I did boot into the ZUI ROM after flashing the QPST. But I didn't test to see whether the problem persisted because I hate ZUI and could never use it on a daily basis when there are other, much better stock Android-like ROMs available.
I was in contact with someone else on XDA who had the EXACT same problem and he suggested trying the latest build of AEX which seemed to solve the issue for him. So currently I'm trying that but I haven't had enough time to test it, yet. So far I have not noticed the phone disconnecting but it has only been about 1 hour since I flashed the ROM. I will know more after a few days of testing.
Switching to AEX made no difference. Still no success despite wiping entire device and flashing stock ROM with QFIL. I have tried almost every Android Pie ROM including LineageOS, AEX, AOSiP and Pixel Experience. I also changed channel on my broadband router. Nothing works.

Then it may be a hardware problem, the antenna wires can be disconnected or damaged. Have you tried a stock Rom?

After an entire year of this problem, I have FINALLY found a solution to my phone disconnecting whilst on home Wi-Fi. Turns out it is nothing to do with the phone or custom ROMs...
In the router settings there is an option called 'Enable IPv6 on LAN side' that is checked by default. I unticked this and now my phone is able to hold connection flawlessly!
