Hello everyone. I tried following most of the tutorials here listed on this website to root my Asus Zenfone 2. But I couldn't make it work.
I have an Asus Zenfone 2 ZE551ML and the model number is the ASUS_Z00AD with Android version 6.0.1.
Apparently made in Taiwan.
Is there any way of rooting this device with that android version these days?. When I tried with the adb tools I always got an error of unable to write.
Should I try unlocking the bootloader?.
Please help.
Thanks!.
Unlocked your BL (official or unofficial) , then flash the latest twrp for your device via fastboot then reboot to twrp recovery. In twrp flash/install your choice of root.

Im on Z008 2.19.40.12_20150612 I cant seem to flash twrp no matter how hard I try. Im rooted and unlocked BL. Is fastboot easiest way or sideload or from twrp manager? Does someone have the download link of which IMG I would need?
Check the General resources thread, you might have to upgrade your stock firmware version.
Download twrp manager from app store. Use that.

I've tried that but what img file do I need for my firmware?
I see the new one is 2.20.40.63 what would be the right twrp img file to flash?

You must be on 2.19.40.18 - 2.19.40.22 to unlock your bootloader. Only after unlocking your bootloader can you flash TWRP onto your phone permanently...
Go to general section and check out the 1st stickied post, it will give you the info you need to do this...
I'm already unlocked and rooted. What img twrp should I flash based on my firmware?

TWRP officially support Zenfone 2 (551ML) so get from there....
I'm 550 ml now what? Can anyone just send me a link to the right img?
What are the steps to flash this TWRP recovery 2.8.7.0 OTG-USB NTFS.zip. This is for 550 ml
I'd use untethered Twrp then flash, but that's me.
Twrp manager automatically picks the right recovery.

I should be able to flash a rom through CWM that way right? I'm already unlocked bootloader and rooted and su is on my sd card. Can I flash a rom gaps and su again through CWM and I'm good? But I'll be stuck with that rom till I do perm recovery right? CM 12 not for 550 yet?

How did you unlock, officially or unofficially?
If unofficially, did u get the white ASUS: IN SEARCH OF INCREDIBLE Splashscreen? That indicates if your bootloader is unlocked or not.
White=Unlocked
Black=Locked
Well the solution is very simple. Unlock bootloader and install TWRP then root your Zenfone 5. After that install Titanium Backup then uninstall the bloatware you never use (do it later, party link,What's Next.... etc) Make sure the ROM storage have about >25mb empty storage and then flash the Xposed SDK 21 V80 via TWRP and Congrats. Now you have succesfully installed Xposed on your Zenfone 5 Firmware 3.24.40.87.
All of the required files for the process you can just Google it.
can i relock my bootloader after flashing xposed?

Yes you can
It's just a "cosmetic" install. Most modules still failing and causing bootloop after enabling.
what version to download ?? arm64 ??
nevermine , i take mistake , this cpu is not 64bit
thanks

Use these both Unlocked fastboot and custom TWRP. This can also avoid the bootloop problem.
And this is also applicable to any of the zenfone updates (both Kitkat and Lollipop)
Unlocked Fastboot + TWRP (28.1 MB) https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B-6pyVYCz-kccG9lOFgzXzJWYU0&usp=sharing
Flash it from your current fastboot:
Copy to your adb folder and and do shift+open command prompt
Code:
fastboot flash fastboot fastboot_unlocker.img
adb reboot-bootloader
After fastboot reboot is completed, type:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery zenfone_twrp.img
No need to reboot. Select Recovery in your phone
You'll be in the TWRP Recovery.
NOTE: This TWRP is very stable. I've tested it on my Zenfone 5.
I flashed a TWRP 2.0 but it does not flash some custom roms. So I flashed the TWRP-3.0.2-M1-Z00A version. Now when I go to recovery, it does not open TWRP. It just reboots again and again. Plus, I have no OS intalled and no backup of Stock Rom. What do I do?
ADB is all you need.

First tell me what actually you did ? Which ROM you were using? Stock or Custom? What method you chose to flash TWRP ? And why twrp v2.0 when there is latest v3.2.1 available ? There are many post available on internet to unbrick your device one of them is here : https://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone2/general/guide-brick-soft-hard-bricked-zenfone-2-t3284256
Tell me your last working software information. ROM, recovery, is your bootloader unlocked or not ? All info ppl will need to solve ur problem.

Point 4 & 5 make no sense. Point 4 is general procedure to install TWRP on any Redmi/Mi/Xiaomi/Poco device.
Point 5 is specifically for Mi 11x/Poco F3/Redmi K40. Why would u club both points in the steps. At the end both have the same purpose but shouldn't be clubbed as a guide for Mi 11X/Poco F3/Redmi K40. You wont be able to install TWRP in these devices using point 4 at all.

Did u try miflash. What error did miflash give.
Usually Miflash if used properly should unbrick the device.

I have successfully installed twrp by following this procedure and installed EU stable version 12.5.3, you can refer to the attached screenshot. If this didn't work for you, maybe you can try to install fast boot ROM using the below method and install a stable EU ROM version.
