AT&T Note 5 in Norway - how to update from android 5.1.1 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note5

Hello.
I live in Norway and have the AT&T Note 5. It's currently running 5.1.1 and when I check for updates on the phone it sais it's updated. When I check Smart Switch it also sais I'm on the newest or current update. So how do I go about updating this phone to the newest android? I've tried using a VPN on the laptop and on the phone to see if any updates would show on the laptop (smart switch) or the phone, but it did'nt.

Check the General Note 5 threads there's 2 or 3 Odin PC packages abailable for both MM and Nougat firmware. You can also use ADB sideload on PC to apply updates and security patches but be warned ADB will factory reset your phone so backup any pictures or other files you want to keep
FYI: AT&T only allow access to their update servers if you have an activated AT&T SIM card in the phone. Obviously this is very difficult if you dont live in USA. (I live in the UK).
I am also pretty sure that smartswitch can NOT upgrade AT&T note 5 but it may be able to perform emergency firmware recovery.
Odin flash followed by ADB sideload for updates is your best (and possibly your only) way forward

[Q] Can't Update to latest firmware using OTA or Kies

When I first bought this phone, I bought it from amazon and it was an AT&T locked Galaxy s3. I unlocked it using an app called unlockunit and I'm now using it with GoSmart, which is a part of T-Mobile, if I remember correctly.
Anyhow, when I plug my phone into the computer to connect to Kies, Kies does not recognize the phone. When I use OTA updates, the update is interrupted before it starts. Does anyone have a solution to this problem? I want to update to the Android version 4.3 but I can't so I'm stuck using 4.1.2
Okay, I got my phone to connect to kies, I have no idea why it was not earlier, but sometimes it tells me I have to reboot my device... but when I hit tools>firmware upgrade and initialisation, it says [ 'SGH-I747' does not support initilising. ] My current firmware version, according to Kies, is PDA:MG2 / PHONE:MG2 / CSC:MG2 (ATT).
Please help, I'm still trying to update my phone to the latest firmware.
Could I possibly update my phone to the latest firmware by rooting my phone?

Help upgrading from 4.1.2 to 4.4.2

Hey all. This is my situation. I have a GT-5110N wifi only tablet that I purchased 2 years ago in Canada. The motherboard recently crashed and the repair place put in a SIM enabled motherboard Model SGH-I467 with Android Jelly bean 4.1.2 I wan't to upgrade to 4.4.2 as I had with my previous motherboard. With extensive searching I found out that this is an AT&T tablet. I try to use the OTA update on the tablet but it says I have the latest version. The AT&T website says there was a OTA update to 4.4.2 in October 2014. I've called both AT&T and Samsung for help. No dice. What can I do?? I checked on sammobile and they only have the 4.1.2 version. However, the SGH-I467M through Telus contains 4.4.2 Can I download that?? I'm new to rooting etc. Do I need to unlock device?? Please help.
Thanks
Unfortunately, there is no firmware available for the sgh-i467 4.4.2
I recently got my 4.4.2 rom rooted and extracted the rom components - but I am trying to find someone who knows what to do with all the stuff to create an odin flashable rom.... but we are not there yet... hoping someone can help out.
If you keep watching here on the forums, it may happen at some point.

Weird as the AT&T website says there is.
I can't post the link yet but its there. I'll cut and paste

How to verify the update
From the home screen, tap Settings > About device.
The following information displays:
Android version: 4.4.2
Baseband version: I467UCUBNI2
Also, the same model but Canadian version has the update SGH-I467M
Yes... there is a firmware available via ota... fota is firmware over the air update...
The only way to get it is to be on att cellular network. It is not available to download any other way as far as I know. If you find a way to do so, please report back to us where to get it.
Also, the i467M is the Canadian model and it has different firmware... it is not the same as i467.

oh ok. Now I understand. Thanks man. I tried to get AT&T to help me out. If I had a US IP address, would the wifi update work?? Or am I required to have an AT&T sim card installed?? I guess you kinda stated that already.
I had to have an active att sim card to get it to work on my device... wouldn't work any other way for me.
Thanks
Thanks dandroid. I guess the next time I travel to the US I'll see if I can get a hold of and active SIM card. Let me know if you hear of any other solutions. Thanks again.

Dandroid: If I request AT&T to unlock the device, will that help me?? Another question, would the firmware upgrade file from sammobile for the equivalent Telus device work then if I unlocked it from AT&T and then used odin??
Att will only sim unlock, which makes the device useable with other brand sim cards... mine was already Sim unlocked by att before I tried to update to 4.4.2, but in still needed an active att sim to update it.
Trying to flash any firmware other than sgh-i467 will brick your device - doesn't matter if it is unlocked or not.
Thanks again

Thanks dandroid. I guess I either wait and update on my next trip to the US (who knows when) or try the AT&T gophone option. $5 sim card and $20 refill. Activate it and hopefully it recognizes it then lets me do upgrade via wifi or Kies. That should work right?
That sounds like the easiest option to try... if you can get a cheap Sim card it might be worth a try.
I love this tablet, but I hate this locked bootloader bs...

Galaxy Tab S 8.4 Firmware Update

OK so I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 from ATT Model SM-T707A. I recently switched from AT&T to T-Mobile. The new firmware came out (5.0.2). Supposedly, it can only be downloaded off OTA. Well, since I'm not with AT&T anymore, it won't let me do it that way. I tried searching everywhere for a way to download it and install it manually but I've been failing miserably. Can anyone help me out?
•Software Version: 5.0.2
•Baseband Version: T707AUCU1BOE5
•Kernel Version: 3.4.39-4973971
•Build#: LRX22G.T707AUCU1BOE5
I also haven't been able to find any information on SUCCESSFULLY rooting this model as well.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Hey man,
Did you try updating via Samsung Kies? Details here:
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS00034201/997374319/
Click on "update via computer".
Cheers,
Su
Shouldn't make any difference what carrier you are on. You don't have to have a sim card in the device to update.
AFAIK it still updates from samsungs servers using the model and build number of your device.
By the looks of it you are already running 5.0.2 if that's your current firmware.
As said above just use kies/smart switch to update, if there actually is one.
There was a ~130MB update released a few weeks back (presumably for stage fright?).
It takes the build from BOE4 to BOE5... not sure if this shuts out Kingroot etc.?!
This thread says you have to have an active AT&T SIM card to upgrade.

Have you tried Samsung kiosk at Best Buy?
FYI, I was able to update a AT&T galaxy tab s with stock OTA update over WiFi, without any SIM in the tablet.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 AT&T Marshmallow UK

I purchased a Galaxy Note 5 from eBay. It came with Android 5.1.1, i have tried doing a software update but says i have the latest software. I have tried updating through Samsung Smart Switch but says my device is not supported. I have read other people have updated to Android 6 but it will not update mine. Is there anything else i can do? My device is the N920A. Thanks
You need to have an (activated) AT&T SIM Card in the phone before you can get OTA updates on an AT&T model - that really stinks doesn't it? !!!
However if you are willing to do a factory reset and use ODIN to flash the firmware upgrade, you can get the July 6.0.1 Marshmallow update form here:
http://www.androidsage.com/2016/06/...5-to-n920aucu2bpe6-android-6-0-1-marshmallow/
I am in Canada and was wondering if it would work to get a AT&T pay as you go sim card for the phone and then do the update over wifi?
Have now done the upgrade and running Marshmallow, thanks for your help
Good to hear ... did you use Odin or did you find an AT&T SIM for OTA update?
You can also apply all the OTA updates using ADB sideload (but that factory resets your handset every time, so do a full backup with Smart Switch PC app beforehand)

Having the same issue here. I've tried:
- Hard reset
- Using my AT&T sim chip to get it on the 4g network, turning off wifi
- Using Samsung Smart Switch
None of the above would yield any updates past 8.1. It just keeps saying I have the latest of everything. Gah!

I was in the same situation for over a year and a half and finally i managed to update by flashing it.
On an unlocked ATT TAB S4 i flashed , T Mobile ROM and Verizon ROM (Both PIE).
Download the Roms from SAMfirmare and flash with ODIN, you do not require to ROOT it since all these models are SM-T837A (ATT), T837V (Verizon), T837T (TMO).
I think T Mobile ROM is the best as it has Call & Text on other device option and Feb 20 Security update Patch.
Hope this helps!

Actually I managed to solve it a different way:
1. Put in active AT&T SIM chip.
2. Do a hard reset & wipe.
3. Don't put it on wifi during initial setup (unsure if this helped or not, but I erred on the side of caution).
4. Complete basic initial setup.
5. Check for software updates while on the AT&T network.
6. Many updates came through in succession.... first the update to Pie, then a half dozen smaller security updates.
7. Put the phone back on wifi and pulled my SIM chip out.
8. Enjoy.
