Rooting Question - Moto Z Play Questions & Answers

I recently got this phone and will root the phone soon. Rooting guides say I need unlocked bootloader for root. I haven't found a guide how to do this, where can I find reference?
Also I will probably go for stock rooted. For those who have custom roms, is there any particular reason you went with the rom?
Thank you.

Tried searching the forums but couldn't really find anything on this. I have the most updated firmware for my GS3, PALG8. Is the root method the same as it is for LG6 and lower or do I have to wait for someone to come out with a root method for this version?

Thank you, I wasn't sure since my last phone was the EVO4G and it had different root methods depending on the firmware version. The second method worked fine thank you =D

Which build are you trying to root with this method. If you are on FW 244, this will not work. I think it was a root method for 4.1.2 (cant remember which build) and not 4.2.2
On 244, you need to flash the Kernel of FW. 423, root using DoomLord's latest tool and flash the Kernel back to FW. 244.

What's the firmware of your device? I can make a little tuto for you.
Hmm, I had put the xda links of everything needed to root. I didn't know it was an illegal thing to do on the forum. Half my post got deleted.

what about flashtools, they are considered illegal or something?
I had a link pointing to the 423 and 244 FTF and the xda thread from DoomLord where the root tool can be found.

Does that mean I do not have to unlock bootloader?
Just root with purpledrake?
Is there a similar ROm (to CM 11)to flash without all the google and carrier bloat
Flash with TWRP?
Thx

Because the bootloader is currently locked you cannot flash any other ROMs. The only variant with an unlocked bootloader is the D851, which is the T-Mobile variant. PurpleDrake or Stump can help you Root your phone and then you can tweak it with XPosed if that suits you.
Please use the search function before starting a thread as this question has been asked and answered many times.
Did search and read..saw nothing for d852 or I wouldn't of asked
thx for your help.

Yeah, the bootloader can't be unlocked at the moment so you can't put a custom ROM and kernel on it,sadly. Doesn't look like there's any sign of it being unlocked in the near future either.

Well, don't jump too soon it might get unlocked or a workaround may be found. The G2 was never unlocked but the devs found a work around that allowed custom Roms and kernels.

Software Update

anyone else get the prompt to update the software? are you going to update?
Got it and did it 2 days ago
Same and same
probably too early to know, does anyone know if this update will affect root? coming from htc, i remember updates were frowned upon as they can make rooting more difficult.

below is the link I used. The battery drain is bad but manageable. I think it puts the wrong recovery on the phone, but it does root the phone. I was able to use titanium again :highfive:

Bad idea. Next update might fail from left over stuff from root or a mod...then you are done.

The solution (I think) would be to wipe data and flash the entire stock image for your phone, then re-lock the bootloader. This will make sure that any folders/files pertaining to being rooted are gone and shouldn't cause any problems when it comes to validating your OS. Just make sure you properly unrooted SU by using their uninstaller/unroot tool before wiping and reflashing.

Yes run flashall unless you are extremely brave. I used to lock and unlock my nexus 6 bootloader with custom firmwares but this phone is a completely different animal

Flash. all to both slots and be sure to include -w
Out of curiosity, why do you even wish to lock the bootloader? Especially with the numerous horror stories of users unable to resurrect a bootlooping device (rather simple to fix if unlocked) because their bootloader is locked.

Just an FYI, here's someone that locked their bl. Only 2 reasons I can see this as necessary is RMA, and Android pay. And Android pay works with magisk, so really only one reason. Just be sure to know what you're doing. https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-xl/help/pixel-xl-bricked-bootloader-locked-t3698638/page2
