[Q] Returning to stock rom, - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

More and more financial apps are detecting my phone as being either rooted, unlocked bootloader, or custom rom. My phone is UK HTC one m8, running resurrection Remix nougat 7.1.1 (which I love) , it is rooted and has s-off, I have recently relocked the bootloader with toolkit. . I'm thinking of going back to stock rom, to get these apps working again. I'm thinking of using a RUU file to do it, I know this will revert root, but not sure about the bootloader & s-off, can anyone confirm this for me please?

you can run the RUU it will revert the device back to stock and it will remain s-off
the bootloader status ( locked, unlocked or relocked ) doesn't matter for flashing RUU with s-off device ( no need to relock it )

But how i can with s-on ?

Fastboot issue
Apologies, but I am performing this return to stock on my HTC one M7 before I attempting it on my HTC 0ne M8, this is why I posted this in the M8 section.
OK got S-OFF and then started the process to return to stock. Cant remember at what point but I had to nip out and left the htc-one m7 connected doing something when I came back the phone was sat all started up ready to configure ( like it does after a rom install) only thing , its was still on the ROM I had installed so i thought the installation had failed, I tried to reflash, an older ROM SLIMKAT 4.4.4. to see if that would help , but now I cannot get fastboot to register with the device .
Go into bootloader select FASTBOOT, FASTBOOT appears as the selected option, and then PC returns an error stating device not recognised.
I know the drivers are ok as everything works as it should if I do the same on my HTC One M8.
Here are my HTC one m7 details:

There is no reason this should be posted to the M8 section. We can't help you. Folks with specific knowledge of the M7 are the best equipped to help you. Advice intended for the M8 may even harm your M7.

Yes I understand tat, but I am looking at restoring my M8 as all my financial apps are now failing due to the root, unlocked bootloader, or custom ROM, so was testing the restore on my M7 before I attempt it on my M8. I understand the basics but am no expert so wanted to test first, which is just as well as the M7 restore has failed and now cant get fastboot to recognise my devices. although I think this may be something to do with my laptop I am using to connect.
Any thoughts on this?

Again, I can't be sure that what applies to the M8, applies at all to the M7. Which is why I suggest posting to the proper device forum (the fact you want to then to the same to the M8 has little to do with where you post).
At least for the M8, as long as the device is properly in fastboot mode (which you already confirmed, with the previously posted screen shot) then lack of fastboot connectivity is almost always something on the PC side (not anything with the phone). Try another USB cable, try other USB ports. Try to uninstall and reinstall HTC Sync and the HTC drivers. Also, you can try going to Windows Device Manager, finding the phone, and see if you can pick the option to manually select the drivers. Then pick the generic "Android MTP device" drivers, and see if fastboot will then work.

Clockwork Mod recovery never officially supported this device. There were some unofficial versions that worked decently (and some folks really liked it), but stopped being updated around 2 years ago, so do not properly support any remotely current firmware versions. Therefore, errors are expected. And if there is an error trying to restore your backup, it's probably not possible to fix that (restore that backup).
My recommendation would be to flash TWRP recovery, then you can install the stock TWRP back from the following thread.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/help/tutorial-how-to-stock-stock-twrp-t3086860
Otherwise, if your version has RUU (they are specific to your version CID, MID) you can use that to go back to stock, as already discussed.
Also bear in mind that restoring to stock with either method will wipe your data. So plan accordingly (backup data to an off-phone location) before doing either method, if you want to keep anything.
If you need specific guidance for your M8 version, do fastboot getvar all, and post the results (delete IMEI and serial number before posting).

fastboot erase cache, and try to install TWRP again.
Also, TWRP is typically installed with fastboot, not adb. Fastboot and adb are related, but not the same thing. And confusing the two can cause problems. So make sure you are doing it properly. Cut and paste your command prompt command and outputs, if you can, so we can verify.
What TWRP version did you try? Proper TWRP version depends on your current firmware version (as mentioned in the guide I linked). So we really need for your to do fastboot getvar all, and post the output (delete IMEI and serial number before posting).

How can i identify my firware version in order to use proper version of twrp?

Asking for this to me implies that you don't know how to do it. Yet before you said you did it, supposedly successfully.
Describe step by step (and also ideally, cut and paste your command prompt) how you tried to install TWRP.

If you actually tell us what you did (describe each step, exact commands, file names, as much detail as possible) then we can tell you if it is right or not.
If you don't tell us what you did, we can't tell if it is right or not. For instance, maybe you did it right, but just not the right TWRP version.

That is strange, the command looks correct.
What happens if you type: fastboot getvar all
Note that the output includes your IMEI and serial number, which are personal data. So if you do another screenshot photo, and it includes the full getvar output, be sure to hide your IMEI and serial number.
Alternately, you can copy and paste you command post text by right mouse click in the command prompt window, select "Mark", then drag the mouse to highlight the desired area, then Ctrl+C to copy.
Then post in a reply (Ctrtl+V to paste) and you can just delete the IMEI and serial number lines.

[Q]How can I get back to stock from a custom rom?

I recently got my HTC One M8, and I was trying to follow a tutorial on htc-one wonder how to (I cant link it). It links to other tutorials for pre-requisits, and I fell down the rabbit hole trying to get pre-req after pre-req. I spent about 2 days non stop on this and I'm pretty sure I screwed up pretty bad.
I'm think I wrote the recovery image to the boot sector by accident...or something like that
What I have:
1. . My computer recognizes my phone in fastboot. I can transfer files to and from. I am not sure if adb works.
2. I can access TWRP by hitting "Recovery" in fastboot. I think this means I have a custom recovery successfully installed.
3. The InsertCoin rom (insertcoin-m8_5.0.6_ART) is installed and I can boot to it. I was not going to keep it, but I needed it for one of the steps. Wifi does not work so any files have to be added manually via usb.
4. My bootloader is unlocked
5. I have S-ON
6. I have Minimal ADB and Fastboot installed and it works. I also have Hansoon200's All In One HTC One M8 Toolkit
7. This is a brand new phone so I don't care about my data.
I'd like to get back to stock so I can try to run Firewater (will not work without internet. Wifi is broken on the rom) and get S-OFF (needed for Google Play Edition). How can I go about this?
I apologize in advance, I've been at this for days. I wouldn't post unless I was really stuck. I appreciate any help you can provide. I will gladly provide any additional information
Thanks

couple of things ... firewater is over it no longer works. Sunshine will most likely s-off your phone (for $25)
If TWRP works it's not on the wrong partition. you have no wifi becouse you did not update your firmware .. it says this in every rom thread.
so your steps now are find the nandroid and stock recovery to go back to stock Here > COLLECTION of Stock backup's

So I'm going through that thread, and I think I know what to do. The main problem is finding the correct files. Then I use the terminal, fastboot getvar version-main the result is blank and fastboot oem readcid returns SPCS_001. However there does not seem to be a Nandroid matching those values. Any ideas?

HTC Sync Manager doesn't detect with custom ROM

The title says it all. My M8 doesn't have the stock ROM, and I want to get it back to stock. Since I can't get it updated from the phone settings, I've tried with the HTC sync manager but it doesn't recognize the phone at all, probably because it isn't running original firmware. Would appreciate your help.

Rumrunner won't pass test 1

Hi there
I am trying to gain s-off via rumrunner. I followed the instructions closely but when it attempts to check the bootloader and fastboot, it fails. My phone (Sprint m8), boots to boot loader but then it just sits there and rumrunner fails.
What is going wrong and how do I fix it? My phone is rooted and unlocked. I've got insertcoin and twrp flashed. Is there something wrong with fastboot? Please help as I am eager to gain s-off. I am thinking about just using Sunshine, but I don't want to pay the fee if it's not even going to work.
Thanks

Rumrunner hasn't worked for over a year and a half, and Firewater hasn't either.
Sunshine is the way to do it now if you want/need S-Off. You could buy a Java Card, but it would be more expensive.
Oh, wow , okay thanks. Yeah I thought it was weird but I was watching a video that was uploaded one week ago and the user was using rumrunner. I'm still a bit of a noob with this but the reason I am trying to gain s-off is because when I flash a new rom I either get stuck at the bootloader or the boot image. I'm guessing it's because I'm a-on and I would have to flash using abd commands on my pc? If I am wrong can someone please let me know? It's a bit confusing. Thanks

Is your firmware up to date?
Tell me what it says next to "OS" in your bootloader. If you are using an old version of TWRP, it may be blank. If it is, post the results of fastboot getvar all to determine the firmware version from that, but remove your IMEI and serial# first as that is private info.
Well it is blank. It just says "OS-".
How do I execute the fastboot getvar etc. ? In a command window on my computer or? Sorry. Noob is shining here
I just updated twrp like last week though?
Yeah my twrp version is 2.8.5.0

Did you buy the phone rooted, or did you use ADB and fastboot to root yourself? Yes, you do it in CMD with the SDK/ADB software. Hook your phone up to your PC, open CMD in ADB (shift+right click and choose "open command window here")
enter adb reboot bootloader
then fastboot getvar all
I rooted it myself. I just tried it and got nothing after it says <waiting for device>. I could also be doing this wrong too though. SDK...Is this android audio whatever? Because I've been trying to find that and that's where it brought me, from every link. I downloaded the actual package with the program tools so I think I have it right but I'm not sure. Thanks for all the help by the way
I think I've got the right sdk tools and all. I just found another thread where someone had the same issue. He said it fixed magically overnight, but another said to uninstall the HTC drivers and reinstall on my pc. Guess I'll try that, unless you know another solution?

Okay. You "think" you have SDK? I'll tell you right now, your firmware is out of date. Run the software update/RUU from HTC's US website. I would tell you if you should run Sprint's standard RUU, or the Sprint H/K RUU, but since you have failed to provide me with the information to direct you to the proper firmware update that I asked for, I guess you can figure it out on your own by searching your CID and MID from your getvar output.
Here's a link to the HTC US Software Download page.
Good luck!

If you unlocked the bootloader yourself, you have a working adb/fastboot environment.
Be sure you are booted into OS, and have "USB Debugging" enabled in settings, to issue the adb command suggested by xunholyx.
Thanks @redpoint. Sorry for my ignorance and lack of knowledge guys, just trying to get things straight. Im guessing my next step as of now is to get my boot loader locked again and get my stock recovery back so I can update my firmware. It seems like I can't do much until I do so. I downloaded sunshine and it gave me an error about flashing a "non debuggable ram disk". Thanks again for your help. Any other advice is much appreciated

s-off isn't going to automatically (all by itself) fix your problem (flashing a ROM), if that is what you think.
You have 2 potential (probable) issues:
1) The ROM won't boot if your firmware is outdated (s-off makes it a bit easier to update firmware, but its not strictly required to do so)
2) ROM also won't boot if its does not specifically support the Sprint version M8
I'm failing to provide the info because it's not giving me the info! I'm guessing because I'm doing this on my own more or less

I have no idea what that means. Your computer is sensing you are doing this "on your own" and deciding it doesn't like that?
If you are having issues executing the advice given to you, you need to state that, along with the specific results, error messages, etc. A screenshot may also be helpful.
If you don't post that you tried, and it failed; all we can do is assume that you ignored or missed the advice.
If the computer is hanging "waiting for device" when you try "fastboot getvar all" then you should try another USB cable, another port, re-install HTC Sync, or even try another computer (if possible).
But I have no idea of knowing what the issue is, if you don't tell us.

If on Marshmallow, you need to use TWRP 3.0, and SuperSU 2.76. But you need to unlock the bootloader again, to do that.
A lot of folks have been trying to use old versions TWRP and/or SuperSU (or toolkit that will install old versions of those) which results in no boot.

"I can't do anything now" is not an accurate statement. I advised you several things to try to remedy the RUU Error 171.
One alternative, is if you can find the RUU in zip format, you can flash from SD card.
Another alternative, unlock the bootloader again, and restore a stock TWRP backup (stock "nandroid") from the collection here on XDA.

One alternative, is if you can find the RUU in zip format, you can flash from SD card.
Another alternative, unlock the bootloader again, and restore a stock TWRP backup (stock "nandroid") from the collection here on XDA.

Try what I suggested in Post #2 (to fix Error 171 on RUU), first:

USB connection error. Boot the phone into bootloader-fastboot mode, try again. Also make sure HTC drivers are installed, and try different USB port, different cable.

Meaning what, that you are still getting Error 171?
If you tried something I suggested, and it didn't work, you should post that, and specific details and results. Otherwise, you make it harder for me to help you, as I waste both our time asking questions for info you should have provided in the first place.
And you didn't try "everything". Don't post statements like that. Its an exaggeration (if you truly tried "everything" in the world, it would eventually work), and doesn't actually tell us anything useful. Be specific in what you tried, and the specific results.
What Windows version? What USB version? Win7 and USB 2.0 have the best chance for compatibility for RUU.
Also do fastboot getvar all, and post the results (delete IMEI and serial number before posting).

Your gratitude is appreciated, but I'm not sure what I really did to help.
If you were clear about what version M8 you have (one of the main reasons I asked for getvar info - but you never supplied) and what RUU you were trying, we could have identified the problem a long time ago.
Happy to see you sorted it out, in any case.

Updater Bug: Unable to restart to recovery

Hello,
I wanted to install the newest nightly update. But when I tap "Install" it says "Unable to restart to recovery". Ive got a few questions here:
What causes this and why doesnt the errormessage explain itself?
Can I apply the update myself somehow (Where is it located and how can I apply it)?
Greetings,
Ravior
Honestly, if you don't know how to get to recovery then I highly suggest you stay away from modding android phones.

Did I say anything about that? You assumed that and simply insulted me.
Of course I know how to get there. I did that several times for installing and trying out stuff. But how should I know that I can simply go there and apply the update by selecting it and chosing install. I asked for that information and you didnt gave it to me, instead you where insultive. Had a bad day or what?
can you boot in Recovery via adb (adb reboot recovery)
Have same issue. The other day I tried to go from viperone 3.5, s off, unlocked/rooted, twrp installed 3.0.
After the installation attempt using clean install, got stuck in a bootloop. Finally was able to install a stock rom 5.0 using ruu. S off, unlocked
Now I cannot log into recovery.. I get that splsh screen with red waning text below but the top section in red says cannot load recovery. I tried a few reasons over the last few days, trying fastboot/adb but can not load twrp. Tried everything from 2.8xxx to 3.xxx.
cid is 11111111.
Also tried some other ruu's but says its not for my device, but it is. Unlocked, m9, hima
scratching my head here, I must be missing something

If had read anything to do with installing ANY rom it will have detailed instructions on how to install it, usually it will tell you how to get to recovery too. Even if it doesn't tell you how to get to recovery it is a google search away.
Spoon feeding is a no-no. You must try to solve issues yourself before asking and refer to the forum for "obtuse" issues.
As for the detailed output of why it failed, usually you get some sort of error code or phrase as to why. If not then you have to start looking into logcat. You will notice that it failed to boot to recovery so manually doing it will resolve that, then you just follow whatever guide you were using after that step..
I understand that things can get overwhelming when flashing devices but it is all part of the learning curve and knowing how to navigate your device is essential before even considering changing anything.
Further more, I didn't insult you. I didn't intend to. It was an honest opinion because if you don't do the basics you WILL "become a cropper", you'll probably brick your device.
Back to basics is my advice before you proceed to mess with ANY device.

Yup, missing the cid is supercid. No longer valid. Cid and mid must match the firmware you're trying to install.
The bigger issue is not being able to get to recovery at all... Will it go to download mode?.
Obviously you've read flippy's thread and sneakyghosts thread?

Yes those threads brought me back from a soft brick....
I remember back when I first rooted and installed viper there has to be a way to change the cid, isnt there?
Thanks btw

Yes there is, it's done via a command in fastboot but I can't remember if you can do it with just root or if you need s-off too..

So, obviously you both didn't read my thread since it contains a guide for changing your CID/MID...

No honestly, I re read everything and t is right there, no question and it is appreciated. I was just concentrating on how to get back to a version of TWRP. Finally I was able to do that and still unlocked, S Off and have a TWRP 2.7 but every time I try to go higher I get the cannot boot recovery in the red letters. My bottom line was to install a 7.1.x rom. That is what caused all my original issue, tried to update into 7.1.1 RR Rom and everything crashed. I used a RUU you have in that thread (THANK YOU) and was able to get out of bootloop on RR bootanimation. I am running on stock 5.x, rooted as well.
Is there anyway to still move forward? Do I need to change the CID to match the firmware I choose within the device choices?
Thanks for all your earlier posts and it has become invaluable and thanks for any advice going forward.: good:
TWRP versions above 3.x require your M9 to be at least using firmware 3.x. The same applies to android 6/7 based roms. Either restore the correct CID for your SKU, flash the latest available 3.x RUU for that SKU and then install all missing updates via the software update function of the stock rom or restore the correct CID and look for a full-wipe firmware pack in Sneakyghost's firmware thread (located in the development section). Be aware that his packs don't contain a rom but that shouldn't be a problem at all if you want to install RR, anyway.
