Hello everyone, this is my first post here and I am desperate
I am new to modifying these things and I am not having much luck teaching myself how to do this. My ultimate goal is to install this tablet in my car. I have built a side slider out of fiberglass so when it slides in, the tablet lines up with the micro USB port, I need it to charge the tablet while connecting to an external thumb drive which hopefully will be buried inside the dash.
Screw up #1 I found out that I need to "root" the thing in order for the usb mount to work properly, I kept getting an error about SU not installed. So I found and followed this>>> wugfresh.com/nrt it was easy enough to follow and I ended up with a rooted device. (a new look, with new icons 1)
Screw up #2 Something happened and it asked me if I wanted to upgrade to the new operating system, I said "sure why not" so it jumped to something called KitKat 4.4. (A new look, with new icons 2)
At this point I can have a single thumb drive but not charge at the same time. So I kept looking around and found....
Screw up #3 this website... ://mehrvarz.github.io/nexus-7-usbrom this guy seems to have solved all the problems I am having. I followed the install steps and it says this......
•If you are NOT currently running CM 10.1 or USB ROM, you need to first do a factory reset (wipe data partition). This will remove all your apps and custom settings. You may want to install GApps on top
•If you are already running CM 10.1 or USB ROM, you can just roll USB ROM installer "over". It will not harm your apps or custom settings.
Screw up #4 I go hunting to find out how to get CM 10.1 or what it even is and install this (A new look and new icons 3) turns out its something called cynagenmod?? I think its yet another operating system
Screw up #5 and the last nail in the coffin. I find and install this thing. timur.mobi/files/c33/timur-usbhost-2013-04-21-cm10.1.zip
Symptoms as it sits right now,
1. It wont shut off and stay off, it will go to sleep but I cant just hold the power button to shut it off, if I do it automatically restarts and goes to sleep (I think this is possibly by design)
2. far more distressing when it starts it hangs on a pop up that says "Unfortunately, the process com.android.phone has stopped"
there is no way to click on anything before this shows up, if I click ok it just keeps popping up. this is about 12 hours of reading and installing and I am pulling my hair out!!! I can build 10 custom fiberglass dashes in the time it takes to get this thing to charge and use a USB drive.
My questions are
1. Are these operating systems I keep installing? 4.3, 4.4, CM10
2. Where do I go from here? do I install the original operating system? reinstall this CM10 thing?
Any help on this would sure help me out. Thanks in advance, Jason

There is just one Operating System, called Android. 4.3 and 4.4 are updates of that OS, just like windows 7, windows 8, etc... but not that big updates. Cyanogenmod (CM) 10 is a ROM for Android. So it's Android but with some changes, so you can understand, it's customized and has some tweaks and mods.
If you install cm10, what you're doing is just add those themes and tweaks on the stock os that you had. So you're basically installing an "update" made from a team of people who is not the creators of Android (unofficial if you wanna call it like this). If you look on the forum, android development, you'll find cm10 there. It's a ROM as I said, and there are the steps to follow in order to install it.
Hope I helped Jason, goodluck!
Thanks for the response, this cleared things up a bit. I have re installed the CM10 and now I can move around and click on things again. I still cannot get the USB hub to work while charging the tablet. I will keep installing stuff till it explodes
So what is Kitkat? is this a newer version of jellybean?

Yes it is. Google names their Android versions after sweets. 4.0 was Ice Cream Sandwich, 4.1-4.3 were Jelly Bean and 4.4 is Kit Kat. 4.4.1 is the latest version of Kit Kat.

SO you have a powered OTG cable? And u want the tablet to charge in car and use a thumb drive at the same time? Well I know the elemenx Kernal Supports USB OTG + charge mode
This is what I suggest:
First do a backup while your up and running. Go into your recovery and choose backup. Backup (if any issues later you can always restore)
After backup, load all the files below on the root of your tablet.
NOW Wipre, Use the factory reset option in your recovery (TWRP etc...)
Install/flash ALL files below (in your recovery again) and in order I listed. When all goes well backup again
Install this rom CleanROM 2.5
Install this Kitkat bootloader
Install this KernelElementalX 2.3 For your USB OTG + charge mode
NOTE: When Installing Elemental x kernel pay attention in the install options. You may have to choose the USB OTG + charge mode option.
The first link is CleanROM 2.5. Your Operating system per say. It is pretty much a stock rom with some performance enhancements. Youll be happy with it. :good:
if you are looking for just a quick fix instead of messing around with custom kernels (which is a great learning process by the way) you could just order a docking station from amazon. However, as you probably know by now trying to flash custom roms can leave you with a bricked system. Dont worry Nexus can be saved and I will give a you a good link/tutorial on how to do it. Getting back to the docking station... I believe they run about $30 but it would allow you to charge your tablet and run an OTG cable at the same time. Keep trying to flash (install) a custom kernel that allows USB + OTG (on the go cable) charge mode.
If you completely brick your system...and I mean completely brick here is a great tutorial on how to get your system back up to its original factory settings and then you can just go ahead an root your tablet and start over again. Here is the link -> http://blog.laptopmag.com/how-to-hard-reset-a-bricked-nexus-7-with-your-pc
Here is another option that you should look into...
Look into "multi rom" there is a nice app you can get from the google play store called "multirom manager" and it will allow you to install a modified recovery manager which allows you to boot multiple operating systems on your Nexus 7. You can keep your "stock/original" operating system and install cyanogenmod as a secondary operating system, or the ROM that naturecannon mentioned above and you could use that secondary android rom when you need USB + OTG charge mode capabilities.
Here is a link to the multi manager rom thread -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2457063
I hope it helps.

Thank you to everyone for all of the help. I have posted like 6 threads and this seems to be the only one that has people willing to help and give me advice, so thanks to all!!
Is anyone here familiar with "timurs kernel"? I am too new to these forums to post a link to the website, but this seems to be my answer in many ways, It is designed specifically for turning this tablet into an automotive installation. I just need help configuring and installing it. there doesn't seem to be much tech support out there for it and it only seems to work on android 4.2. or cyangenmod 10.1. the problem is these software releases seem to be obsolete. I would like to work with this because it seems to have a bunch of options I am interested in like having the tablet shut off with the key and always operating the tablet on its side.
for now, because I can only seem to get help on this forum I will follow these steps
Install this rom CleanROM 2.5
Install this Kitkat bootloader
Install this KernelElementalX 2.3 For your USB OTG + charge mode
NOTE: When Installing Elemental x kernel pay attention in the install options. You may have to choose the USB OTG + charge mode option.
after downloading the first "clean rom 2.5.zip" I saved it to my tablet in downloads, then I restart my tablet while using the power and both volume buttons. go to recovery mode, then I go to install zip from downloads, it starts working for 2 seconds then says (status o) installation aborted and it wont let me continue
Is there a way to do this from my PC? when I install cyanogenmod its all done from my computer and I just plug the tablet into a USB port. this seems to be dummy proof.

Pretty sure that Timur kernel is for the Nexus 7(2012).
It looks like this "timurs kkernal" is out dated now and was for last years model. I don't think it will work for me without modification
I am left with trying to do this clean ROM install, I am having difficulty trying to get it to install. I am installing from the boot screen but it doesn't seem to be working, am I doing something wrong? Is there a loader I can use from PC to install stuff?
If I do get this to work will I still be a super user?
Can someone please link me to something or tell me how to install this clean rom?
I want it so bad but I cant get it to go

smart scrolling ???
Hello ,
I flashed Hyperdrive+RLS3 after wipe data/cache/dalvik cache ,
with hope that smart scroll will work , but it's not working at all, apart from flashing eye in notification panel.
Please solve that problem some how ....
By the way nice work on rom :good: and .
Missing Lock Settings?
To begin, I am reporting a (possible) bug for Hyperdrive RLS3 on my SM-P600 on TWRP 2.7.0.2. I have verified the md5 on my zip prior to each flash. I have been able to replicate/repeat this "bug" on multiple installs (where I have fully/cleanly wiped the device each time).
I've found that my lock screen security detailed options are forever set to those for "swipe" regardless of what I have chosen for my lock screen security option. Even if I set a pattern, pin, password, etc. lock, the options below are always set to those as if I had chosen "swipe" as my lockscreen setting. The lock option that I am selecting still works, but I am unable to see or tweak any of the specific settings associated with each of the particular lock screen security options (e.g. I am unable to toggle the visibility of my pattern, as this option doesn't appear, if I choose the "pattern" lock option. However, the device still asks me for a pattern to unlock with). I can only ever see/modify the "swipe options" such as the "unlock effect", "ink effect", etc.
Is anyone else having this problem too?
Good day all, I just installed rls3 and everything is working fine so far except the penwindow/multi window manager. Adding the apps I want follwed by saving and rebooting does not do anything for me? Anybody have the same issue or am I not doing to correctly?

Latest Netflix Working
I have installed RLS3.1 and Netflix v.3.7.1 is working fine for me…no xposed module and no version rollback.
Here are a few of the choices I made when installing Hyperdrive. Maybe this information can help the developer or other users figure out where the problem with signing in is (or isn’t).
I steered clear of many of the eye candy options simply due to personal preference.
I mainly use Hyperdrive for the fixes, battery life and speed compared to stock.
Full system wipe through TW…not just data/cache.
Hyperdrive TW Note 10.1 Launcher
Hyperdrive Light Note Pro UI
Very few of the Samsung apps (Dropbox, Font Pack, Link, STranslate)
No Weather Widget
No Email App (I use K-9)
No Audio Mod
Stock Note Boot Animation
Ad Blocking
ES File Manager (even though I use X-plore)
Very few Google AOSP (Maps, Youtube, Camera)
Samsung Music Player
No additional keyboard (I use Dashlane’s)
Tubemate
Stock 4.4 Kernel
Once set up I installed Nova Launcher, TiBu, Lux and Greenify.
I also used ROM Toolbox to edit build.prop product model entry to say SM-P600 instead of SM-T800.
The only HD Tweaks are show Network Traffic, Date Style, Battery Style, and Ink Effect.
The only xposed modules active are App Settings, Greenify, and NlpUnbounce.
That’s about it for system related apps/settings.
I hope this helps.
Not certain but that change might have fixed netflix app for me.
I made the change, rebooted, cleared the app cache and i could sign in. I couldn't before.

That's good to know. If that is, in fact, the fix then it's a heck of a lot easier for folks to implement than re-wiping and selecting different system mods.
I hope some other Hyperdrive folks that are having problems with Netflix try this out as well. I'm also wondering if maybe the model number mismatch is causing some app or system issues that only seem to affect certain people and not others with otherwise the exact same configuration.
wake up problem
Everything works totally fine except wake up it takes 5-8 sec ... can u please help

Not sure if it's a kernel or rom issue but I'm on hyperdrive 3.0 with xluco and I bought this dual flashdrive:
Kingston Digital 64GB Data Traveler Micro Duo USB 3.0 Micro USB OTG (DTDUO3/64GB) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LIXJ54K/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_uVaqub148TMN0
Which works perfect on my S4 with KK, it gets detected without problems by the SM-P600 but I cannot explore with either My Files or ES Explorer, it gives me a systemui FC.
Anybody else can test?

Newegg has refurbished 16GB notes for $350 now and Groupon matches and also has the 32GB for $20 more. Hopefully we'll see another Hyperdrive version - I'm planning on installing mine this week
Hyperdrive ROM, Pen window manager not working
So I installed Hyperdrive rom RLS 3.1 for my sm-p600, problem is that the pen window manager app is not working, I select my app (MX video player) in the options of pen window manager to enable it in pen mode but after restarting it still does not show up when i try to edit the apps available for pen windows using the s-pen
Edit: I fixed it, problem was that I have a separate app for the pen window manager that I restored using titanium backup. I uninstalled it in the play store and used the native pen window manager via the Hyperdrive rom tweak app..
wiped to reinstall: cmd adb cant locate the device
I may seem like it, but im not a noob... long story short, Im dealing with a TBI, so im a bit rusty.
I have a sm-p600, flashed Chain fire with, installed nandroid and backed everything up, flashed 4.4.2 firmware with odin. I flashed twrp recovery and sideloaded hyperdrive custom rom via adb.
Everything was great, excellent rom! I had a few issues with it, mainly touchWiz would crash if I tried to change the lock screen wallpaper via pressing and holding the home screen. Also, settings would also randomly crash as well. I did some research through the forums and came to the conclusion that I might have messed up on selecting the options during installation (something with the launcher). SOOOO, my dumb a** attempts to re-install the rom. I factory reset, wiped, and cleaned the whole thing with bleach ( metaphorically aka twrp). I reboot in TWRP recovery, go to advanced--->sideload--->... then my win 7 pc fails to install the MTP drivers. I reboot, replug, "overlap drivers", get it to detect, but adb cant detect the device. So, I bust open ctrl panel uninstall the samsung drivers, adp drivers, and pdanet; then, i reinstalled different drivers that i found from another thread and i cant detect the device from cmd adb commands.
I think it might be a usb debugging issue, because if everything was left constant as far as drivers go and it was wiped, the issue must be occurring on the tablet.
I forgot about that thought when I woke up and messed around with the drivers downloading universal drivers and what not. Device manager now recognizes the device as google nexus adb interface but cmd adb still cant find the device.
Please help!

I have a question. I have used xkat 4 rom for two weeks and my battery life is 8,30-9 ours SOT. I know every device and user is different, but how many ours of SOT do you get with this rom? Just to know, because I am doubting to change to this rom.
Thank you
should i start from scratch or throw the the custom rom on an external

Sorry to double post, but can I just throw hyperdrive rom on a external sd and flash threw twrp? or do I have to download stock 4.4.2 firmware flash with odin, rootcheck/reroot, and sideload hyperdrive rom via sideload if it detects after the firmware flash?

I was rooted, but im not 100% sure I still am after i did the advance wipe. Twrp asks if I want to install super su right before I reboot, so I assume I am. I'm not exactly sure what you did and what your symptoms are, but I personally did a twrp advance wipe including the internal storage which was where my rom was located. As a result, the tablet is soft bricked b/c it doesnt have an OS.
You can use odin to AP/PDA flash the stock firmware, but it HAS to be the same firmware build version of your device before the brick occurred. AKA bricked on 4.4.2 custom kitkat, then flash stock 4.4.2 kitkat via odin. Just make sure the software is for your device and country before installing.(http://www.galaxynote3update.com/fi...-the-unbrick-and-recovery-guide-just-for-you/).

My question is: can I just flash the custom rom back onto the device or do I have to flash the orignal firmware?
Install on Note Pro
Hi I have the 12.2 Note Pro and was wondering if this ROM will work on it?
The hardware buttons have stopped working, and the software buttons don't work. Don't know why. There is no reason why. Even the software buttons in TWRP recovery don't work
So I updated my recovery and reinstalled the rom (crdroid) and still no success.
I even installed oppo recovery and project spectrum 1.3 but to no avail.
Any advice?
Thanks
I have tried everything, even going as far as re-running the lvm script.
When I turn on the developer tools to display the finger presses/cursor movement - when the software navigation buttons are enabled the finger presses stop just above them and are never registered on the buttons themselves.
Any suggestions? I am getting desperate and don't want to buy a new phone
Looks like your bottom part of the screen might be damaged. Did you drop your phone?
Not to my knowledge, but I was hoping for any answer apart from that.
Ok then, have you tried to flash color os by the unbrick method?
Not color OS - flashed spectrum and oppo recovery but used the normal mechanism. I did also reformat the drive and redo the lvm.
How will the unbrick help?
It completely wipes away your entire phone and gives you a clean install of all software, firmware as well as the partitions. Maybe it might help.. Other than that, try some more Roms other than crdroid. I'm sorry I'm not much help.. As far as I can tell it's probably a hardware issue.. If all this does not work, then you will eventually have to get it checked at the hospital.
I got the new phone 15 days ago, thinking it'll be as amazing as Zenfone Max ZC550KL (Great Camera, everlasting battery) but it had super annoying issues, specially the battery draining too fast. Even during deep sleep (screen off for hours) the battery drained from 100% to 70% in like an hour or so, without any SIM/WiFi/Hotspot.
I had to fix this as it was impossible to go outside for a day and not have it switch off on my face when I needed it. None of the power saving settings helped.
So, I unlocked the bootloader following a youtube guide (it was a batch file on windows, not the original app which I found out about 10 mins ago), and flashed TWRP into it. Took a full system backup of all partitions and rooted it by flashing the latest SuperSU Binary. Worked like a charm. Installed CPU Tuner, deleted all triggers and set frequency to manually locked 500 MHz. When I need to play a game or do something which needs performance, I'd just go and manually pull the slider ahead to 2.3 GHz.
The avg. battery drain during deep sleep or screen off for hours, reduced from 1120 mAh to 10 mAh which is HUGE (found out with an app I cant remember). I'm happy with it as now it can last about a day and about 3 days if I'm mostly not using it, with WiFi on all the time. Its just slightly not as butter smooth with the UI as before.
Now, the camera quality is the worst I've ever seen. During dark, the PixelMaster Camera makes things crippling dark and too much purple pixelated noise and grain, pics taken from it look like from my Galaxy Tab 2 which I bought in 2012, and I tried different camera apps and everything I could, no luck. Where, the image taken from almost the same place at the same time, both phones held side by side, my old phone ZC550KL takes a million times clearer picture, brighter, perfectly visible and great looking. I also tried setting the same enhancements and stuff but nothing helped.
Some posts on googling it, suggest to update the system firmwire to improve camera quality but it requires the original recovery mode to be there, where I have TWRP.
I want to update the system as I have nothing to lose, already have 4-5 complete TWRP backups of every state (Original before rooting, rooted once, some modifications later, etc). Just if the phone gets bricked or doesn't boot anymore, that would be the problem.
I've messed around with almost everything I could on my Windows 7 and Windows 10 Desktop over past 6 years, so I have an idea about how things work.
Now, how do I update the system?
I think I could flash an update manually downloaded on my PC using adb and fastboot drivers... If so, how?

If so, how?

very first of all you must update to MM latest MM it has improved battery life and there are also security related issues fixed. the very best thing to do is.. go to the following link. see the section flash firmware without AFT. (you do not need to change recovery or boot image or any thing just follow the instruction)
reboot your phone in fastboot mode and run each and every command step by stem. even if some of them fails.. not reboot, after first boot go to recovery mode and factory reset. start again and then again sideload latest MM from asus website
https://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone2/help/thead-bricked-phone-updating-to-mm-tips-t3452785
Not so sure I wana upgrade to MM though. Feels like something will definitely go bad during that.
On ASUS support site, in the firmwire tab, I found a LOT of options to download. It'll take time to find the correct version.
Say I found the correct version (or ROM) and downloaded it. (about 1.2 GB), what are the steps to flash it on my phone? Can it be done using TWRP?
Worth upgrading to Marshmallow IMHO
No freezing, less ram usage, better battery usage especially with a new battery, more compatibility to newer apps, Permissions control (love it)
If you say that you are handy on PC then great, cos you may need to be
ASUS ZenFone2 (ZE551ML) software Image: V4.21.40.352 for WW SKU only*(andriod M)
Thats the current version of MM
Download and place onto SD card, unplug cord and system should recognise.
Plenty of info on the web about upgrading however you need to unroot and renable all disabled.
More then likely will brick phone but piss easy once you have done many times lolol
Check out the Unbrick threads

as i suggested it is foolproof method to update to MM. i am 100 percent sure you will not brick if you follow what i suggested. don't see multiple threads. multiple instructions. do as i told earlier
Sorry to be away for such a long time... I'm back. xD
As soon as my exams are over, to do this upgrade.
I'll do it like this:
1. Copy the update zip file to MicroSD. [Filename: UL-Z00A-WW-4.21.40.352-user.zip]
2. Full system image backup using TWRP - All Partitions to MicroSD, then transfer to my PC (Just because I want to xD )
3. Clean format all partitions on my phone (I've had enough "errors after updating" issues on PC, so)
4. Select the update zip file from TWRP, flash it.
5. HOPEFULLY there won't be any errors (If there will, I'll simply restore everything from the backup I just made on step 2. Nothing lost!)
6. Reboot and pray for it to work xD
[if it still works and boots just fine]
7. Remove SIMs, MicroSD, etc., Factory Reset (again. Just cos I want to xD )
[Hope for it to still work on rebooting]
8. Check if everything's working (all apps, calling, playstore, etc. just to make sure)
9. Install everything, sync up, make it my phone again
10. Reboot, boot into Recovery (to see if TWRP is still there?)
11. if TWRP isn't there, Boot into Fastboot, flash a stable TWRP recovery to replace the default one using my PC.
12. Create a MM (before-root) backup of all partitions. (Actually, I'll create THREE backups, can't risk any failures xD )
13. Download the latest SuperSU, Flash it. Download a supported Viper4AndroidFX v5 apk or flashable zip, install/flash that too.
14. Set up root apps (CPU Tuner, Titanium Backup, BusyBox, etc) and first thing to see if Viper4Android works.
[Cos if my phone aint havin' v4a, everything above is useless for me because I can't live without that perfected sound and I'll just revert! xD ]
That seems to be about it. Will all this work? Any suggestions?
Some questions I still have -
There's also a recovery.img file in that zip. Will it overwrite TWRP?
Will the bootloader be locked again after this update? (unlocking it was a long search for android LP)
And the main reason not-that-tech-related I'm wanting an upgrade now (Substratum!):
Spoiler
Will Substratum Theme Engine work with MM? (I just want EVERYTHING BLACK - to rest my eyes. I'll buy themes too)
How well can substratum skin my phone? (I want literally everything dark themed, as much as possible)
Will backgrounds of apps like messenger/facebook be dark themed?
Hi guys,
I am using the stock rom now since the day I got it and unlocked the BL and installed Magisk for root and SafetyNet. Phone worked fine all the time (lazy me never changed the rom) until recent.
Most applications like Instagram, Snapchat (and all that garbage) and others randomly crash recently.. Application stopped working or process.media whatever stopped. Did try to do the usual stuff removing cache, but now this also does not work anymore. Also it's time to update because the WiFi driver has this RCE flaw(CVE-2017-13292) in it and well, lots of other bugs in the rom. The most irritating bugs that all my android devices had. The flashlight stops working because of the camera initialization or something, need to reboot the phone in order to use the flashlight again (when I was with a hot soldering iron in my car waiting for the device to reboot to solder some ****ing wires under the dashboard pissed me off really good. Though long time ago, but you get the idea... )
I did try to update my device using OTA (I knew it wasn't going to work, because mine is rooted). I did try it and the update failed(lol), luckily the phone still booted :cyclops:
What should I do now, can I just flash a stock rom using twrp or is there another stable rom that is clean like the lenovo roms without all the garbish? Which ones are advised?
The version of the rom I am using as of now is in my signature. I do not really need Magisk anymore for now, I had it installed mostly for NFC emulator but the company I emulated the card for no longer exists so meh.. No need for emulating anymore Pachting ads away with luckypatcher is also not worth it and there's like no proper way of blocking ads so I'll rather live with it instead of messing around and putting effort in it.

Android Pie ROMs are pretty stable and usable now (everything works but be aware that all custom ROMs will have darker video recording in comparison to stock)
ROMs of choice:
On Oreo: RR(Unofficial final builds by fullbustah),CrDroid,Arrow or Xtended
On Pie: CrDroid(has an extended desktop bug), SuperiorOs,ArrowOs,AospExtented
I also recommend installing a modded Gcam version because that will significantly boost your camera quality without any throwback or setback.
To install a pie ROM, I have written a tutorial somewhere in our guides section. You will find it pretty quickly.
Also Magisk 18.1 (latest for now) and Adaway still blocks ads perfectly. (Systemless hosts enabled in Magisk settings needed)
I recommend joining Lenovo P2 telegram group for latest news, support and download links.

Alright thanks for the information. I will try to flash my phone next week. I do have one more question. Is there a hardware selftest or test menu in the stock recovery or bootloader because I have a bad feeling that my board might be about to fail. I think this because all kinds of funky things did happen the last few days (I hope the mainboard is still fine, fingers crossed).. I know my old Lenovo had this menu and this way I found out it was dead. Well it was obviously dead but for sure after the test failed because Android didn't boot anymore, and was not able to flash another rom and get that one to boot up.

I'm not sure if the p2 owns a menu like that.
You might wanna boot to bootloader and navigate through the small menu via volumekeys.
But otherwise...no idea.
Good luck!
