Multitasking on rooted Nougat? - Moto Z Play Questions & Answers

I am thinking about getting this phone. But I hear that this phone is very poor at multitasking, aggressively killing and refreshing apps between switches. I also see that it's got improved after the Nougat update. I like to have multiple apps alive in the background, and it would be a deal breaker for me if it hasn't been fixed. Can anyone comment on this? I'll root the device, so it would be nice if you have rooted Nougat on it. Thanks in advance!

Multitasking 4 or 5 apps doesn't seem to be an issue.
Rooted but not running the stock firmware, running aosip.
Every phone has it weakness.
Runs circles around my Nexus 6

I know that all phones have their own weakness. The two biggest problems of the phone I'm using are short battery life and bad ram management (app refresh). These bug me literally everyday, and I would like to buy a phone that do not have these problems. Moto Z Play seems to have a good battery life, but I hear bad things about multitasking, and I wanted to hear experiences on what it is like after the recent Nougat update.

Well from my experience so far having nougat for a week is it appears that ram management is better, but the only app that seems to get kicked is Play Music and YouTube.

Thanks for letting me know that. Does the phone go back to previous 5-6 apps after switching without refreshing except for the two apps? I'm seriously considering this phone, and I hope that the phone doesn't have the issue.

So far, yes. I don't use very ram heavy apps. I'm pretty happy with the performance of the device for my usage

Thinking of buying G3. How widespread is the slowing down issue?

Hi guys,
My GF needs a new phone. G3 looks like an awesome phone on paper. But browsing forums I see people complaining of phone slowing down after a few minutes of usage to almost a crawl. Is it a real issue? Does flashing to CM/Vanilla android fix the issue?
When using the phone non stop how long will each battery last? Will 2 batteries last for the entire day browsing over LTE? i.e. if each battery drains in 4 hours, then answer is no if you commute.
I've never experienced the slowdown you described. The device has 3GB of RAM, so either those cases were by people who were maxing out the memory by never closing apps, or they were lying. As for battery, I am averaging about 30 hours per charge with 3 hours of screen on time. I don't take any precautions to save battery (Greenify, turning off wifi/data when not in use, power save for anything other than when my phone drops below 15%). This has been my absolute favorite Android phone to date and I've owned it since Day 1.

2GB ram version received some complaints early on...
Lollipop 5.0 has greatly increased performance and once you debloat it, its really a great phone. My 3GB D850 is lag-free and great battery life. very few phones left that come with manageable size at 5.5", sdcard, and removable battery.

Hey dude,
Still very happy with my G3, stock rom can get a tiny bit laggy when doing heavy stuff, debloating is just getting rid of the stuff on there you dont need/use - i used systemappremover.
Installing another launcher can work really well too, i tired 6-7 launchers and tested all for speed and found Nova launcher to be the best of the bunch.
Im also running ChupaChup rom 4.2, its based on stock but has been debloated and tweaked, amazing rom.
Good luck.
I found that even without root and custom rom just changing launchers made a huge difference to improve any lag. Overall not bad at all.

Brand new G4 (H815L) performance issues

Hey fellas!
Just got a new G4 to replace my Nexus 5, and I'm encountering some heavily disappointing performance issues like:
poor 3D performance - games like Boom Beach and Smash Hit run just... bad. mediocre/low fps gaming, where my Nexus 5 did perfectly fine!
2D performance (UI) - sometimes laggy UI transitions, typing really quick with SwiftKey keyboard is impossible, it's like the phone can't keep up with what I'm clicking fast, feels majorly laggy.
Anything I'm missing? and low performance/battery saving settings I'm missing? what's happening... oO

There's an option somewhere to lower graphics in games to save battery...its on by default...at least on h811 it is...also in dev options changing all animations to .5 or off fixes any laggy experience
Thanks, seems to help a bit, but it's right on the fine line between actually helping and just a placebo.
I mean, some really visually simple games (Smash Hit) shouldn't run with such low fps, especially not when considering the Nexus 5 ran it perfect.
What about the rest of the UI?
I suspect that some of the problems I'm having with SwiftKey are software related (might not be optimized for G4 yet?), since I'm noticing some other unrelated performance bugs in it; emailed that to them.
I got H815L myself and it's pretty good.
What's your Antutu score?
Personal experience with Swiftkey is it isn't optimised very well at all and only runs properly with a handfull of phones if at all. I gave up on it a long time ago.
As for UI performance, I haven't noticed any lag yet. Games run great too.
I would point the finger at the Apps you're using and make sure you've updated the software on the phone to the latest version.
The nexus phones feel less laggy because the transition animations are so slooooow just like on iphones, and it's just there to hide any lag as it takes so long to open and close the apps.
You'll get used to G4 I have no doubt

I got 49081 on Antutu, and I'm running v10H and all my apps are updated.
I do suspect it's the keyboard app itself messing around with me, because I see several more bugs except for the weird latency.
And just for comparison, the game Smash Hit (on HIGH set on graphics) runs choppy with a Nexus 5 running it perfectly.
I know and understand Android, but why do I need to get a new $500+ phone with new hardware only to find out my 2 years older phone is more "optimized"?

Man idk...maybe some bloat or config issue but i installed smash hit(never played til you mentioned it so thanks for giving me a new addiction)and it ran smooth even on high graphics...my h811 has same hardware and my antutu was much higher...my g4 has been my favorite device since my g2...the g3 was a pile and i hated it...you will have to check out whats clogging up your processing...something isn't right...if all else fails try backing up data and factory reset...many have reported this to solve many issues good luck!

Weird that you got 50k+ on antutu, most of the reviews I Google's were about 41k+.
How can I check what's choking the device?
I have nothing special installed; opened the box, turned the phone on, updated the latest OTA and then all my apps - games and some other stuff but nothing heavy that I didn't have on my N5...
Maybe I'll try to factory reset the phone some day next week and see the results.

Download a wakelock detector or something to see whats stayin active that isn't necessary...also are you rooted...if not you may want to do that...it will allow you to freeze and remove unnecessary and memory hogging apps and will give you a boost...i got rid of a lot of those day 1 and have had a great experience with my g4...we shouldn't have to do this to get the best out of this device but its the way android has gone...also with root you can try ctt mod and other performance boosters to really get the best experience...you can also get better battery life without the extra junk processes running in the back...there are many threads to teach you what can be done with the g4

Yeah, I pretty much know most of the basics of all the advanced tweaking, but since I have H815L the bootloader is locked, so rooting it is a bit pain in the ass.
Someday next week I'll just factory reset it and check again.
Thanks bud!
well ok.
Just did a factory reset and... Nothing.
So friggin disappointing, im completely clueless now.
right when the phone started up (completely blank after reset), downloaded and installed Boom Beach and Smash Hit, and the performance was still bad. Im so annoyed.
What the hell should i do? Why is my BRAND NEW phone is having poor 3D performance?

Root it and bump up lower clock speed on big/little cores with kernel audiutor...it will reduce lag and actually save battery as small processes cause it to jump around a lot on factory settings...short of doing this idk...

Actually i just checked 3 different reviews and the avg antutue score for the G4 is 49k. if you run antutu back to back 3-4 times it will drop to 44k. If it wont rise above 45k then it indicates a heating device with throttling.
How can I check what's choking the device?

How is your battery life in general sot/run time ?
can you try playing your games in a low light environment. So your brightness will be much lower. Do you notice any difference ?
I've had the phone for a total of about 4 days now, SOT seems about 3-4 hours, better than my N5 so I'm happy so far.
Tried gaming with low light / cold environments, doesn't seem to change anything.
Not sure about the throttling, due to the fact that the device is actually pretty cold... not sensing any extreme heat (my N5 was way hotter).
After that factory reset I get about 48k on Antutu, and I actually tried two different "heavy" games (NOVA3 and Asphalt 8) and they run OK...
I genuinely have no idea what's the problem, so instead of rooting and tweaking stuff that seem to not have to be tweaked for others, I'll just wait till I get back home and compare the gaming performance with friends' devices.
If something goes wrong - warranty it is.
Man, I feel you! Been dealing with laggy UI and cursing my choice of purchase since day one. Anyways..
For games - have you disabled 'Game Optimzer' option from 'Battery & Power Saving'?
For laggy UI - Swiftkey is laggy as ****. So try Fleksy, it's a LOT smoother, I barely notice any lag (although it does hiccup once in a while...). As for general performance, you have to accept that some animations will be choppy - that's just how LG UI works, there is no work around. For me the phone was chugging a lot before I uninstalled Inbox by Gmail, after that the phone regained it's speed and it's pretty damn smooth now. It still stutters here and there but ...what to do. Also try delobating it and removing any unnecessary apps and services (you don't need to root for this).
OK so some updates.
Rooted the phone, debloated the s**t out of it, even managed to got to 5h 2m screen-on time with that lol.
Tried to tweak lots of other things as wellwell, got me some great bootloops in the process. eventually I practically totally wiped the system and flashed a 100% clean one.
Smash hit (on High setting in graphics) and Boom Beach still work a bit choppy.
NOVA3 seems to work ok.
AnTuTu is about 50.5k.
I seriously can't figure out what's the problem.
the 2d phone UI seems almost perfect, and the benchmark score seems OK.
What the hell could be wrong?
Is there any more testing (games/benchmarks/logs) I could do to try and figure this out?
It's going to take me another week till I go back to my country to check with a different H815L. Asked a friend with the US model, she claims Smash Hit works flawlessly fluid. can't understand that.
I find it funny, the fact that I might ask for an under-under-warrenty device replacement just because couple of games run bad.
Hoping the XDA gods would help me in some way, before heading the noob warranty-for-nothing route.
Thanks!

Dude i has the g4 H815L and it is works fine but maybe it becouse the root.
I has the device for few months with stock version of lg and my g4 works very good and when i play games like Goat Simulator he got hot if not very hot but if your device don't get hot becouse of games so for sure you won't get high preformance.
Plus my bettery works fine and my phone can work perfectly and smothly with smart watch and survive one day with out any problames.

Every CPU (SoC) is unique. Remember, even two identical CPUs can deliver different benchmark results, thus have different real world performance. Unless there's a software issue you haven't found out about yet, it's also likely that you just got a bad one.

Don't even hesitate. You paid for it hard earned money under the condition that it works as stated and advertised by LG. Now, as you told us, it does not. See my point?

Does this phone still lag?

I know it's been some time since the 5X came out and I'm thinking of ordering one. Has Google addressed the lag issues that plagued the phone when it first came out? How would you rate smoothness and performance?
I bought one a few days ago , it doesn't lag at all and in term of performance it's really good! It's fluid.
got mine in early december. stock, rooted, adaway, deactivated transition animations (literally all the changes i made). no lag issues so far, app switching is smooth and launching an app is subjectivly as quick as to be expected. from my experience and what i've read it can easily keep up with the SGS6.
If you're stock, then yes.
If you're modding and have custom kernel, then potentially no.
Lag on 5x? Can't say I experienced that.
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
Experience the lag quite often now. Especially if I don't reboot it for an extended period of time. Most aggravated by camera use. If I never use the camera, it takes a significantly longer period of time before it starts to lag. If I'm traveling and using the camera constantly, I need to reboot by end of day to get the phone functional again.
Honestly any bit of "lag" issues you may have heard about is nitpicking...the overall experience is very fluid and fast.
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
I've had my device for a couple days and haven't had any lag issues what so ever on completely stock unrooted and have used the device a good bit. It makes me think that whatever was an issue when the phone was first released was a hardware issue that has since been resolved behind closed doors.

I have two, one is mine and one is my wife's. I bought them both on release and hers has been quite the headache. It's already been replaced once for issues with unreasonable amounts of lag compared to mine. Mine has been mostly fine, with the same pain points like Camera/Chrome as her but not as bad. I'm not quite as demanding of the phone as she is. I recently wiped mine and went to an AOSP rom with the ElementalX kernel and haven't experienced any of the same lag doing the same exact same tasks. I may wipe hers first and try the same set up before exchanging it again. I'm leaning heavily towards Google just did not optimize the stock kernel for the 808 chip at all. I really feel like they booted up the first build and went "OK it works, let's ship it" without doing any real testing and optimizing like other manufacturers seem to have done (LG G4, Moto X Pure, basically any other 808 phone).
My phone has never had lag. Smooth as butter.

It's there for some and that's probably not going to change. Here's one popular android blog (Android Central) that recently wrote a "3 months w/ the 5X" article. Multiple editors provided their thoughts.
It is hit or miss for me. This is my first Nexus so I don't notice lag often but it is there even though I am decrypted and running a custom rom/kernel. My experience has been mostly positive, I love using the 5X. If I were coming from a previous Nexus, I probably would notice the difference in performance right away however my last device was a dual core S3.

Nope, stock device here (no root) with zero lag. Snappy performance and the camera is always quick. I only reboot about once per month for the monthly security OTA.
Besides, most CPU governors are tweaked to increase battery life by decreasing clock speeds. Not to increase performance.

My last device was the Nexus 5. The 5x is just as snappy and the graphics performance is far ahead. My device is stock and not rooted BTW. Based on user experiences I've been reading, those with issues are in the minority and experiencing 3rd party software issues. Many have reported success by doing a factory reset without restoring data from another device.
BTW that article is a joke IMO. The only person who mentions how often their performance issues occur mentioned "about once per week" and the rest don't even say.
Obviously some people are having problems with device performance, but I don't believe it's inherent to the device as most are not experiencing such issues and problems only seem to arise once certain types or amounts of background services are running.
My theory: 2GB of RAM on 64 bit OS fills up quicker than 2gb running 32bit. Users are overloading their RAM with background services (possibly aided by a memory leak ala Android 5). It's no secret that many 3rd party background services have really bad memory management.
Yes lag is there. Fresh reset camera everything runs great. Give it a few days (3-4 for me) and you can stop using your camera. Pictures will take 5 seconds to process. I'm not exaggerating. No software fix in sight, and not a peep from Google about this being an issue or a fix in the works. Feel pretty jipped being a pre-order customer.

I run custom everything and I prefer it. OOTB, left some things to be desired even though my overall Nexus experience has been great. I agree, we'll always here complaints over positive experiences.
Your theory on ram makes sense from a general level of understanding. For me, ram management on here is awful. A few apps, Maps for instance, reload all too quickly.

I can also second this, I'm looking for custom ROM that will make phone usable again. At this point, I resent returning the N6.

Short answer, yes it lags and pretty bad. I have to power cycle daily to make it usable. I also thought most reviewers were making unrealistic expectations and we're nitpicking but apparently they weren't
Yes, especially with thermal throttling such as when using navigation, taking videos, or multiple photos in succession.
Mine is horrible. Lag when opening the camera, lag when browsing chrome. My phone is encrypted and I have android wear. Honestly the only thing good about this phone versues my nexus 5 is the fingerprint scanner and the front facing speaker and way better battery life. Other than that I am not liking this phone at all.
I've not been on XDA for quite some time but came on today looming for answers to lag on my 5x.
Totally stock, gets above average use I'd guess, and it starts to lag several times a week.
I I stalled an app called Fast Reboot which seems to help without having to go through the pain of a full power off - but after a couple of weeks that makes little difference now.
Full reboot restores speed, but using the camera a coue of times instantly returns the lag - can take 30 sec+ for camera app to take a photo or close. However the lag starts after a day or two even if I don't use camera at all.
Maybe try a replacement from Google seeing as it seems hit and miss rather than a clear manufacturing/ ROM issue across them all.

Pokémon Go laggy

Hey guys. I was wondering if anyone is experiencing the same issue as I am. I've been playing a lot of pokémon go lately and tho sometimes the game runs really smooth, most of the time it looks like the phone is struggling with it.
Does anyone know how to fix this? It's really annoying specially when scrolling through the pokémon and when trying to throw balls. This should not happen with this device, the game is not that heavy!

It's a server problem, if you open the game or play it in the middle of the night it works flawlessly.

I have been using CM13 for nearly the entire time I've had my G4, and I thought I'd try the latest Stock ROM to see if the battery life was better (game optimizer, etc.) and I experienced the exact same thing. Lagging down to 2-3fps when trying to catch a pokemon sometimes, other times absolutely fine.
I hadn't experienced any of this lag on CM13 and I have played everyday since release. Server lag in this game is entirely different, click on pokemon and they don't work, gyms don't work, 1hp gym bug etc. and I've seen it all, this is something fundementally wrong with the way the stock firmware plays the game. I went back to CM13 immediately and haven't seen it in the past 4 days of playing, so if you do have a model you can unlock the bootloader of I would strongly suggest giving CM13 a go.

The problem is I'm not sure I'm ever going to get bootloop and the phone is new, I would lose my warranty. I don't really think it is an option. Plus I really didn't want to lose the stock camera. Let's see if someone comes up with a better solution

How's the battery on CM13?
I can play PokemonGO for 2-2:30 hours non stop until the battery dies.
Otherwise I get around 4 hours SoT.

About the same to be honest. I saw no real difference other than the lag on stock firmware. The only thing that makes it a little better for it IMO is that CM13 has caffeine which is a toggle to stop your screen lock, so you don't have to set awkwardly long timeouts and such.
Yeah Pokemon go stutters a lot too on my LG G4 when there are a lot of poke stops around including lures.
i don't think it's the processing limitation. if CM13 can run smoothly, my only guess is the horrible RAM management on stock ROM. but that's my guess. mine shows over 1 GB of RAM usage on my phone.
20i software version was horrible but T-mobile (USA) recently updated to 20o and worked much better. not as smooth as CM13 but better. doesn't really get hot either. I'm not on CM because for some reasons youtube won't play on HD. SD plays fine but streaming HD or 60fps video stops but audio continues. otherwise I'd go with CM13 to enjoy game little better.
I just flashed this ROM and the game seems so much better. I still have to do more testing but it seems to run smoothly.

Well at least their is two of us with the exact same problem, i have already tried the button thing, still no luck!
I have come to a conclusion that its nothing to do with the firmware, it could be 6.0 in general? 5.1 worked fine...
It could be something to do with RAM management being horrible on MM idk?
Ill keep you updated, ill keep looking until i find a fix!
Have you tested any other games? i tried a game called Pixel Gun 3D, which is CPU intensive and it worked fine, it has to be Pokemon GO....:good:

I have another app that also lags a lot on the phone, the Black Player. When swiping songs it lags like hell, while on my S4 Mini with CM13 it works flawlessly. I'm really sad about this... This phone was much more expensive and it performs worse than the S4 Mini lol

Question Micro lags / jitters

These micro lags makes the phones processor feel like it's from 2018, can't scroll through anything without having all these micro lags and jitters, same with light gaming, I don't think this processer can handle to much?
If the next update doesn't fix these issues then I don't think they will be fixed?
I haven't had this problem in the last two months I've been using the phone. My wife hasn't complained about her games - I generally don't game very much.
Have never once felt a jitter or lag.....not once. For me this phone has been a pleasure to use. I rooted right out of the box and have since done an update and switched to another rom without a hitch really. except one hiccup i was having with a bootloop. Which proved to be me not disabling mods before the flash. I absolutely love this phone. I am not seeing any of the issues that people are reporting. I also believe that a LOT of reports are bogus. ( Not saying that this is the case here).
I think these "jitters/lag" you are experiencing are due to the framerate getting locked to 60hz. This happens with mine ever day or two. After a reboot it will be smooth. My guess is there is a "bug" from an app or something causing the framerate to lock at 60hz, rather than the 120hz. I haven't quite figured out how to resolve, other than a reboot. It is quite annoying, and I am hoping a future update (if we ever get one!) will fix it.
I've noticed lag when typing. I do use gboard as most of the people do. I do type with two languages activated. Every now and then the phone lags for about a second.
I thought google had already acknowledge that the phone does lag when the battery percentage drops.
Something about accessibility and animations as far as I remember.
Lol that's the first thing I noticed straight from a clean setup twice, Cod mobile is a jittery mess but perfectly fine on my OP 8 Pro and every time I swiped left for Google now it would jitter, Not all the time but it did do it frequently.
Cod mobile was jittery as hell for me as well. After the Dec update it is not jittery anymore but playing on it is really weird. I can't get used to it so i still play on my Poco x3
Mine studders for sure a few times a day for a few seconds. Factor reset didn't help. This phone feels like it's 8 years old with the stutters and the fingerprint reader that doesn't work.
Very smooth experience for me for gaming and all my everyday tasks.

Well the fact they can't even roll an update out without bricking people's phones kind of says it all really, The software features this device is missing will never get added by Google never it's not in their nature they couldn't care less what the user thinks.
You have to check the Google forums to see most complaint threads have been locked by admins to give you an idea of how little **** they give.

That is another possibility and another reason why I hate Google phones they don't even have refresh rate locks just a "Smooth" option but still jitters.
Just found another bug lol try scrolling fast in opposite directions in messages it just freezes and gets confused and sits there like it can't understand fast opposite direction of scrolling lol, Amazing how these devices get released in these states really.

I no and people dis oneui, Samsung have came such a long way to be honest, at least they're phones are smooth and the extra features that's on oneui is what the consumers asked for, even with all the added features it doesn't hinder battery life, yah can't even screen cast on this phone without a chrome cast, people say about a clean stock software but but what's the point, not like as if it's better battery and performance, I get better performance and battery out of my S20 Fe 5g

If a scrollable list is implemented as a scrollview, data will be loaded into it dynamically, AS you scroll through it. Depending on the speed and latency of the data source (for example, loading over the network), and the complexity of generating each element, you may occasionally scroll beyond the loaded data, requiring an interruption that you might perceive as a "lag" or "jitter".
So really there can be two causes that do NOT imply a CPU performance issue; data source, and bad code. A competent programmer can load data from the network in a more effective manner and ensure that processing overhead is minimized, thus reducing the negative effects.
Unfortunately, with mobile, like web, competent programmers are like a drop of water in the ocean.
