Bluetooth audio problem (Smartrover KR-8035) - MTCB Android Head Units Q&A

Hi all,
My first post (yaaay!). Great to see that there's a dedicated forum for these kind of units.
I own one myself, a Smartrover KR-8035 (see here for specs). My problem is that the Bluetooth audio isn't very great, when playing music over it it sounds like a very compressed mp3, at least in the higher frequencies.
When I search this forum I see that other people has a similar problem (see here , where there seems to be a fix for that particular unit, and here). And theres also discussions regarding "bitpool size" (see here).
So, my questions are: Does it sound like that my problem is related to the bitpool size, is it possible to solve on my unit, and in that case how?

[Q] Sound "hacks", possible or not?

Hello.
The Motorola Defy, when used with PowerAMP, seems to sound reasonably good.
But... when you adjust PowerAMP's preamp and the EQ and get the volume to sound a lot higher than what you get with the stock player/media effects ... some songs sound distorted.
On the other hand... I've read about the Samsung Galaxy S and it's apps "Voodoo Sound" and "Galaxy Tuner".
Those apps seem to manipulate the hardware directly (instead of software preamp & EQ like PowerAMP seems to do). Apparently the Samsung has a dedicated Wolfson audio chip, so I suppose that's why they can do all of that.
So... the question is... can something of this be applied to a Motorola Defy? Even if it doesn't have any dedicated sound chip, could the hardware be manipulated in some way to achive something like what the Samsung apps do ?
I'm also remembering some mp3 players that could deliver more volume, but due to local european laws were forced to lower their output power... and then some people hacked the firmware and "erased" this limitation.
What I would like is, basically, more power, more volume thru the earphones. Could this be possible for the Motorola Defy ?
A side-note..
I am always curious when someone wants to have their media player louder:
Why?
Have you messed up your hearing somehow? Don't you use earplugs or headphones? Do you listen to music in very noisy environments... while vacuum cleaning perhaps?
That said, perhaps you could be a bit more specific as to what the applications for the Galaxy do exactly if you want to mimic their functionality on the Defy.
I think he's refering to hacks that adjust the frequency respon or/and adjust the software directly tied to the hardware for a more hi-fi experience. Not just meaning getting higher volume or changing eq-settings.
Just googled real quick and come cross this:

I don't know of any mods/hacks but PowerAMP is able to play flac files.
Cyanogenmod includes a dsp app.
It has equalizer etc. pp.
You can also use it on other roms with root, afaik... (had it on hd2 sense rom) just google.

I wan't my music played louder because... I wan't it played louder.
OK, I'll explain it to satisfy your curiosity
I usually play music when I'm working in loud or busy environments and I need to "focus" (intended pun, as I'm a photographer). I can't use canal earphones, so I sometimes need to use higher volume levels... wich the Defy doesn't seem to have, or at least not without distortion/clipping.
Regarding being more specific... don't you find specific enough the names of the 2 apps I've already given ?
Voodoo Sound
Galaxy Tuner
They work together and can adjust the Galaxy's headphone amplifier analog gain, thus increasing the volume noticiably without distortion, or so it seems.
These programs adjust some parameters in the Galaxy's audio chip, so the quality of the resulting sound is apparently better than waht you get from software EQ.
You can find a more complete explanation about all the possibilities here:
galaxyroot.com/guide-how-to-set-voodoo-sound-and-galaxy-tuner
(can't post links yet)
I can live with Defy's audio quality, but I'd want to prevent the distortion and the clipping I get when using PowerAMP to increase the volume.

Exactly that. I want to know If it is possible to do that (or something close to that) with Defy's audio hardware.

The DSP app makes software adjustments. It can't prevent clipping or distortion... it can do a better job than PowerAMP, at best, though I really doubt that.
--------
In short: I wan't to know if it's possible to adjust parameters of the Defy's audio hardware to improve the sound. What "normal" audio apps do is simply adjust the audio data via software manipulation, but they're bounded by what the hardware allows.
I want to tweak the hardware (or, better said, the software that the hardware runs internally)
So... the "developers" part of this forum is just a wish... nobody knows a word about this ?

The "developers" are busy "developing" software and are not here simply for your beckon call when you want something made.

So what's the point in having a forum for people so busy that can't visit the forum or answer any questions ?
We'll... at least you weren't doing anything important. Thanks for answering... though I expected a more informative answer... but, alas, you're not a busy software developer developing software.

Simple audio bluetooth improvement.

Hi all,
i read many thread on that but nothing really clear so...
All you need is an unlocked wp7 device with some register editor or provxml, Schaps's advanced conf seems to deal with it too (i prefer typing my registry modifs).
I suggest trying to listen a real stereo with 48000hz sample rate...have to be a professional musician to hear differences when setting that rate higher.
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Bluetooth\A2DP\Settings
BitPool : Dword = 51
UseJointStereo : Dword = 0
------------------------------------
(what's next could be linked with the kind of BTheadphone u use)
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Bluetooth\Device\........\Services\..........(then u should see u're in stereo sound settings)
enabled : Dword = 1
------------------------------------
I tried many others entries and those are the most stable. No cliks, bips, stops or distortions...sound is wide and heavy as it should be, if not, try some others headphones.
While the audio quality is fine (Quite a bit better with your tweek for sure), do you notice a lag in the audio when viewing video on your device? On my Newly flashed Arrive, it is a noticible lag that sort of destroys the viewing experience.
the lag appears when watching a video with audio over bluetooth or just simply watching a video (audio over device's speaker)?
I won't help you very much because i don't watch videos on my phone...
sometimes i open a youtube link to see a clip but never noticed any issues.
Only when having a video's audio go through Bluetooth. There has never been a lag with the speaker.
Tinkering with some settings and taking a few notes from some old WM 5-6.1 threads which share the exact same reg entries has made the audio sound great, but I'm not sure if the lag is gone or not yet. Some YouTube videos seem to be in sync, others not so much. Netflix is my prime concern as well but I need to test it a bit more before I can say for sure.

[Q] Increase video and audio recording quality? Build.prop anyone?

So I can't post in the development section yet(I was going to ask in the relevant thread instead of wasting a new one on this question), which I think is a nice rule, but I'm starting to delve into UNDERSTANDING development and how it works. So anyway...
If someone actually checked out this post(which I doubt, since I don't really see people checking the Q&A section) I just wanted to ask, is the build.prop file what I should be looking at for this? I'd like to point out the the EVO 4G has AWFUL audio recording quality, the video I can stand. Just the audio is terrible and totally unnecessary. 12.2kbps at 8kHz is just unacceptable when we have apps utilizing up to 44.1kHz WITH THE VERY SAME MIC that the camcorder uses. I don't know the bitrate for that recording app, but I imagine its at least pushing 96kbps. I used to check "No Audio" and record audio with one app then use the camcorder for video, which was a hassle because then I had to edit the files and put them together.
Yes I know the EVO isn't a GREAT beast(single core processor) but that doesn't mean anything when you got similar phones well within it's realm of spec(DROID, Epic 4G, iPhone 3, etc.) with camcorders that BLOW the EVO out of the water. Why did HTC fail to acknowledge that this was an important issue?!
So enough ranting, my question is simple. The things that are edit-able in the build.prop file include video recording quality and audio recording quality. Does that mean that the EVO's crap camcorder and camera are limited PURELY BY THIS SINGLE FILE? Or, are there other hardware and software limitations that affect the quality?
Lets say that you can dedicate ALL the power the phone has to the camcorder and its software, why should there be a limitation on the audio quality? Why is the audio quality so bad. I see people posting tweaks to increase VIDEO recording quality, and they're done in the build.prop file right? I have no idea how to test if messing with the audio bitrates and frequencies actually work, has this been tested? is that why its ignored? Please someone talk some sense into me! I heard that you gotta do a data wipe for changes in the build.prop to take effect. Is that true? is that why I never experienced differences?
And I really hope I don't get a reply saying "use the search next time" because all I found were VIDEO QUALITY tweaks not AUDIO QUALITY tweaks. Is it because they don't work? or WHAT? and also, I'm rather new to modding, I rooted a long time ago, and flashed a couple mods like a year ago, but recently I've become more interested in HOW those mods work.
There are multiple quality improving methods. Try my smurf tweaks, or xloud and bravia engine. Also there is beats audio u can add it as well. There are was to better ur phone.

Shortly after I posted this, I looked and saw another question asking for a "smurfed out script" and I thought... what the f!? Thanks, I'll check this out and the others you mentioned.
***UPDATE***
Okay, so I looked at those engines and your script. Haven't tried them yet because I don't really want to flash my phone or wipe it right now and they're more for audio and video playback than recording, but I did find a post on Android forums about this issue. Some guy suggested using the LG Camera app. So I checked it out, and I can fidle with the audio quality in there. I never new about this app, but this is EXACTLY what I wanted.
I appreciate your reply though. I probably will end up flashing your script soon, when I have more time. I know this was an old issue, but I had never found a good solution until now.
I know beats audio works. I ran the old eternity rom with the (mod edited) kernel and the audio was brilliant.
Mod edit sorry that kernel isn't allowed to be talked about on xda

? wow really? hmm(thinking about the "mod edited"). only reason I could think of a kernal that's banned in the forum is legal reasons tied to the forum(and a number of mods seem to contradict that reasoning).
I'll try beats, whenever I get the chance i guess, but again, isn't it only for audio playback? the issue I mentioned has nothing to do with the playback of videos, it's the recording. On lg camera, you can change the audio encoding to AAC and mess with the bitrates and the frequency. I have problems on my phone though, the video skips, I think it might be because my sd card is crap, i think its a class 2(its the one that came with the phone) plus its only 8GB. I think I'm gonna buy a 32GB from my friend, I think he said its a class 6, idk how much he wants for it though.

Actually due to gpl issues and with the developer....xda and the developer have come to an aggrement that his name and kernel are not to be talked about or mentioned on xda. In the future I recommend that if you do not know the history or reasons that you not speak about it.

S4 Bluetooth Audio Quality?

it's an known issue that on many samsung phones, including the s3 and note ii are using samsung audio stack. I don't know the details but streaming audio over bluetooth is horrible as the quality of the sounds gets compressed further.
You could be playing a 320kbps file but it sure sounds like 32kbps.
the only way on the said phones to dodge this problem is to use cm aokp aosp rom.
I was wondering if s4 share this similar problem?

what are you talking about? I had a sgs3 and have a note2 with superb a2dp sound quality. the sgs4 sounds fantastic on my Bose bluetooth playing anything from audio books to house. of course sound quality is VERY subjective.

I have done some search and I'm sure that GS2 (like most other smartphones) uses SBC codec to send data over bluetooth.
The problem with SBC is that it reconvert your compressed files, such as MP3 or AAC, before sent them over bluetooth, so the final quality is terrible.

This thread is in response to numerous posts/requests for a fix to a bluetooth A2DP soundquality problem.
As pointed out in other posts, the libraries for Bluetooth (liba2dp.so etc.) have a setting for ‘bitpool’ which is fixed to a low value by default.
People – including myself – are experiencing 2 major issues with Bluetooth audio over A2DP protocol with default bitpool values (or so we claim) :
1) The highs tend to sound 'fuzzy' and sometimes crystalize.

there are a lot of complains for tmobile version of the s2, s3, note 2. I experience this on note 2 personally and I fear this happens on s4 as well. The only way to fix this issue seems to be running cm10 rom that doesn't use samsung audio stack.
[A2DP]
SBCSources=0
MPEG12Sources=1
doesn't seem to help either.
I'm getting a delay when using my hmdx jam. Its very annoying when watching video because the audio is out of sync. I dont have this issue with my nexus 7. Is there a fix for this, perhaps a different bluetooth speaker thats more compatible with the s4?

sound recording issue

Hi everyone
I own a HTC E9+, but unfortunately there was no separate section for this phone in this forum, but i think the sound technology in M9 and E9+ may be the same, so i decided to post my answer here.
I usually use my phone to record sounds especially musical exercises in studios, till now i was using some Xperia phones and the did this very well with brilliant sound quality, but in HTC I experienced pure results. It has a distorted sound, I think because of its compressing system and used codec system.
does anyone have the same problem, or is there any solving way
( I use Hi-Q MP3 Voice Recorder for recording in both phones)
thanks in advance
