Nova launcher app shortcuts not working? - Moto Z Play Questions & Answers

Been searching the web without luck on this one and hope someone here may know. I don't see app shortcuts for e.g. chrome, dialer, or messages. I do see shortcuts on a few like maps and play store.
Anyone know if that's normal? From various forums, it seems as if the above-mentioned apps should have shortcuts even on MM.

I'm using Nova launcher and I have all of the shortcuts. Try wipe data(for Nova app)

^wiping nova data or just uninstalling and reinstalling might be the easiest fix. i'm on stock MM and have shortcuts.

I tried wiping data and uninstalling/reinstalling without luck. To confirm, when you do a long press on e.g. Chrome, you get the option to open an incognito tab, or when you long press on the dialer, you get a list of your latest contacts?

Thanks for confirming. What I was able to find online is that if you don't have 7.1, then only the ones that the launcher dev has added backward support for will show up. I checked out Action Launcher, and it's the same thing. Only the few that we see in Nova are available there too.

[Q] Google Now launcher and missing icons

I've just installed the Google Now Launcher but some icons, like calendar and notes, are missing, showing only a green android.

Please use search, this topic has been discussed before.
The icons for certain built in LG apps do not appear to show up in third party launchers. Some folks have found icon packs that you can install to work around the issue (this only works with certain launchers).

Got it, thanks..
Another question (I've just found out).. How can I disable google now launcher (to use again the LG launcher) without uninstalling it? If I go in the app menu the disable button, the one to delete the preference for that app, is grey..

That's not working as I said, the button is grey, I can't clear the defaults like I do with the other app!
Okay I misunderstood your first post on this. The LG launcher is called home. launch that and it should ask if you want it as the default.

[Q] Adding widgets

Got my Fire phone last week and I'm trying to add widgets with no success.
I'm on the latest Fire OS 4.6.1 (461013820), with google apps added successfully. I've tried Nova Launcher, Dodol Launcher, and Everything Me Launcher. Every time I try to drag a widget to the screen, nothing happens. I can add apps and short cuts using these launchers but not widgets. Anyone have any ideas as to what I need to do?
Thanks!
Only certain launchers display widgets. The ones you tried evidently don't. Cheetah, lucid, Zen amongst others do.

That's interesting. I tried these other launchers based on reports from others in this forum about them working with widgets. Thanks, I'll keep trying.

Still no go. Can't add widgets using these other launchers either. Must be something about my setting that's preventing widgets. :crying:

Same situation for me. I'm running the latest firmware and when I add a widget to the launchers listed above, (Nano (formerly Zen), Nova, etc), the launcher crashes and I'm taken to the Fire launcher.
That said, I just tried adding one to Google Now Launcher, and it worked fine... so I guess I'll use that for a while.

if you're rooted, you can use Titanium backup to make Nova a system app and then converted it back. Somehow that worked for me. I now have widgets on the front of my phone.

Dude. That was absolutely brilliant! I'm using Nokia's Z Launcher. So I moved com.nokia.z-2.apk from /data/app to /system/priv-app and rebooted. Now, not only do I finally have widgets...this fixed the issue with AwSMS's count badge not updating!
Thanks!

Cool.. I have no problems with badges. I am using a eXdialer pro as my dailer and the stock msg app works fine as well. :good:
Anyone know if making something a system app can get Notifyer Unread Badge Count to work on Google Now Launcher? I tried moving Notifyer and Now Launcer to Priv-Apps but still won't update Notifyer icon widget.
Moving Nova to Priv-App totally fixed widgets and Badge Counts work but I just like Now Launcher so much...
thanks,

Widgets not updating while using Nova Launcher

For quite some time I've been using Nova Launcher (Prime) to my full satisfaction.
Unfortunately, today I noticed that the widgets on my homescreen have ceased to update properly. The widgets affected are Zooper Widget and Simple RSS Widget. The former updates extremely slowly and the latter refuses to update at all.
Now, of course I contacted the developers of those apps first but a quick search on Google informed me that the problem seems to lie within the launcher in use. So, I tried clearing Nova Launcher's cache and restarting the launcher, but unfortunately to no avail. The widgets update only once after but cease to update subsequently.
Anybody here got any suggestions? I'm at a loss.
Do you have greenify running at all? if you are, itll be a good idea to put Nova, Zooper etc all under the exceptions list. this will ensure that they do not hibernate therefore eliminating the possibility of the widgets not updating.
also, you may want to look into other (Task/Ram) cleaner apps such as CM Cleaner where you again may need to put these respective apps into the exceptions list. This is of course if you have this sort of app installed and running.
Worth a shot.

Thank you for your quick response!
Good thinking! I have no task killer installed, though, so that could not be the problem.
It does look like a hibernating issue, I just don't know what causes it.
Items like temperature, date etc. do update in Zooper. Also the 'on-click action' works. But if I try to move an item, the widget seems to be non-responsive.

You're welcome.
I once had a similar issue Nova when trying to move widgets around....although that was a long time ago. If I remember correctly, I just cleared cache and data for Nova and even went into nova setting and reset everything to default. That worked for me. But I think you mentioned that you have already tried that right?

Thanks for the tip, but as you said, I've already tried that to no avail.
Update: What seems to happen now is that widgets do update, but it takes about 15 min.
Have you updated the apps recently? Have you tried to clear cache for those apps?
same problem here.
umi max stock no root
no ubdate to the widgets at all
have you find any solution ?
Don't know if still relevant or not but the way I fixed this is going to settings/apps/nova launcher/permissions and enabling all permissions.
Open Nova Settings. Click and hold volume down button for few seconds. Labs option will be enabled. Goto Labs and there you will find restart widgets on resume.

Google and Launcher 3 not responding

For some time now when I open Google it freezes then a pop-up says "Google is not responding, close app, wait, send feedback". Sometimes if I select wait it runs but usually it happens again.
I cleared the cache and now I get a different message "Launcher 3 is not responding, close or wait"
Does anyone know of any solution please
clear the data of the following apps
google
google play services
your launcher (what ever the name of it maybe)
then restart your phone
Thank you. Launcher 3 isn't listed in the apps. It's down as the Home app under configure apps. I'm on Android 7

Make sure you have pressed the 3 dots on the top right corner & select show system - so you can also see system apps in the list
You can always just install and use a different launcher - I recommend evie launcher (playstore)
Thank you, I didn't know you could do that. I cleared the cache on Launcher 3 (which is my stock launcher) but it didn't make any difference. So I installed Evie. I now have to open Google from a shortcut and it still doesn't respond, but if I select Wait it does respond eventually.
When I refer to Google, I think I mean Google Now which opens stories connected to things I've looked at.

Clearing data is different from clearing cache - its within the same menu options though in app settings
Sorry, I misread your post. I'll try it again.
I wish I'd read your post properly the first time. I've done it now and it seems to be working properly now. Thank you.
That's the problem I kept having.. Click on:
Settings, Apps, Show System, Launcher 3, Force Stop, Storage, Clear Data.
*It will delete your home screen icons, so you'll have to re-add them onto your home screen again.

Nova Launcher - Closing Recent Apps Issue

Hey everyone,
I'm running into a weird problem lately. I have a custom homescreen with Nova Launcher Pro and whenever I click the Recent Apps button. I close all recent apps and it force closes Nova Launcher and reactivates Samsung One UI. It does this every single time until I hit the Home button and it goes back to Nova Launcher. Anyone know what could be causing this weird issue. I only had this issue recently so part of me thinks it's from a firmware update. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Try clearing the system cache on boot menu.
Try clearing associated apk caches, data if need be.
If you migrated from Pie to Q time probable time to reload...

Yeah I've wiped cache partition from boot menu (holding power and volume up button during restart). I've also wiped cache and data from both Samsung One UI and Nova Launcher and still nothing.

You can try a hard reboot but that seldom works.
Look at clearing cache/data of the related system apks.
I tried a few launchers and ran into issues with all. Be very wary if you see any system instabilities as boot crash may be next.
One launcher (not Nova) boot looped my 10+ twice.
The Samsung launcher is fast, rock solid stable and allows for a lot of customization.
After fighting with 3rd party launchers that were slower, used more resources/battery, not as stable, loss of some functionality etc... it wasn't worth it.
You could uninstall and reinstall the Nova app and see if that works, I will probably get told that if you wipe the cache it the same thing. But I've done it before with other apps and it has fixed issues. I use Nova beta on my note 10 and I've never had any issue with it, so you could also try that. Good luck [emoji106]

Double check to make sure Nova is set as your default Launcher.
Settings -> Apps -> Default Apps -> Home
I've had this happen a couple times with Microsoft Launcher after an update was pushed.
You may have to set it to OneUI then back to Nova.

Yup, tried that to no avail. I'm losing hope here haha

You're going to have to reach out to the developer then. I'm running Microsoft Launcher and I'm not running into this problem.

^This^ but it may not work.
Reload the OS, go hog wild or... do what I did after a 3rd party launcher boot looped my 10+ twice.
Use the native launcher.
Fast, very stable and very customizable if you use the available free themes, icon packs and the Good Lock family of apps. Throw in a custom background with Color Wallpaper and done.
Solution which helped me
Hi, I had same problem and for me helped to choose as default app for Home One Ui and then back Nova Launcher.

Not sure if you resolved this or not but I just ran into this issue on my Note 20 Ultra. Fix was the same as above where I set the Samsung UI back to default, then switched it back to Nova Launcher and then did a hard restart with volume down and power button. Note: did not work until I did the hard restart

Yah!
It may return though. Hard resets shouldn't be needed. There may be a firmware and/or hardware incompatibility present.
Watch it closely for instability as this is a class of app that can boot loop the device.
Never had Nova do it but another launcher did, twice. Not fun.
Have you set app power management for nova?
boot cache menu clear, also most are gone now but i like cda not on app store, and leave shut down for a few minutes, Mine on Nova would not show apps if i pulled tab on apps still open in background, then just quit, did above and havent had issues. Tis the season
Experiencing this issue with Nova Beta on my Z Fold 2 as well surprisingly its working great on my og Fold.
I had the same issue on a Galaxy M31, issue has been resolved by clearing the data of the One UI Home App under Settings - Apps - Show system apps - One UI Home - Storage - clear data
I do have same issue with Poco F2 pro (K30), although POCO Launcher is still installed (even not deactivated), if I'll choose as default Nova, the recent app button (square) not reacting at all. Multiple press lead to error message "POCO Launcher crashed".
I used the recent apps to clean them from mem (hope I say that right).
did anyone found a way how to fix the not working recent app button on custom launcher (in my case Android 11)?
the suggestions above (including M$ Launcher did not worked for me)
also is there any other way how to delete/kill apps from mem - other than use recent apps (square) button?
thanks for suggestions.

Are there any goodlock modules that can make my icons round? I hate these default icons. The main reason why I would want to use a custom launcher...but don't, because like you already stated, one ui launcher is just fast and very stable.
