How to replace stock phone/dialer with Google Phone app (rooted Lollipop) - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi folks,
My D851 (T-mobile, unlocked bootloader, I've got TWRP and am running stock rooted lollipop) frequently crashes when I try to make or recieve a call. "Unfortunately Calls Has Stopped." It's been this way from day 1.
I haven't updated the software since I got / rooted the phone in October 2015.
Everything else works, so I don't want to nuke the phone and upgrade the OS. I just want to replace the dialer/phone app with the Google one. Given that I've got root and could flash stuff in TWRP if needed, can I do this, and if so, how? The play store doesn't show the google phone app for me, so I'd need to d/l it from a mirror, and figure out exactly which bits to remove and replace.
Any help appreciated.

Why not just install from playstore and make it the default and not use the stock one?

If you want the aosp one install an aosp ROM or cm or lineage ROM instead of stock, I don't think you can flash aosp into the root of a stock rom

I'm on rooted stock Lollipop at the moment. Not interested in a custom ROM at the moment. Lollipop makes it hard or sometimes impossible to replace the stock phone. Sure you can put a new dialer on but to really replace the phone app is a challenge in 5.0. Easy to do in Marshmallow though. The Google Phone app doesn't show for me in the play store. Been looking for a workaround.
I am considering updating the phone to MM just for this but it carries risks... Lots of stuff doesn't backup/restore cleanly and things like Helium are very tweaky on this phone... I don't trust the backup process much. I really don't want to lose my text message history or some pictures in there. If t he update goes poorly I will have to wipe and start over. Uggg.
Thanks.
Marc

To avoid this problem I eventually updated the phone to 30e Marshmallow. So far so good with the Marshmallow stock phone; if it gives trouble I will replace it with the Google phone app, although it STILL doesn't show in the play store. I imagine I can find it somewhere...

Received Fire Phone with 3.5.0 Should I Upgrade ?`s

Received the FP with 3.5.0 att locked with unlock code from ebay deal today and now trying mess with it and got few questions that I just need to ask before I go any further in the path of no return.
First I`ve been somewhat following each steps here at this Guide to make fire os look normal. Everything is going smoothly and got all the way up to firing up google play but unable to download any apps from it. I`m guessing becuase I have missed installing the vending.apk before opening play store? Now I`m unable to install the vending.apk at all. Is it crucial to follow each install order of google services? Or am I missing something that`s preventing vending.apk install?
I`ve already factory restore the phone to try again but before redoing everything should I even try to upgrade to the most recent 4.6.1 and root at 4.6? Just asking because I`ve read somewhere along the way that upgrading to 4.6 solves some problems with play store. Or is it still best to stay at 3.5 for rooting purposes. I would like to eventually put CM11 in it.
Should I try to unlock the phone first with the included code from ATT before going all the way with rooting and to CM11? Will I be able to enter code with CM11? I just don`t have a nano SIM at the moment and just can`t wait to tinker with the phone. Or should I just stop at root/Google Now Launcher and unlock before trying CM11?
Is safe safestrap like just CWM recovery? Can I Make a backup of the rooted stock Fire OS 3.5 and install CM11 now and revert to stock if I need to?
I'm waiting for mine to come. Ordered from same deal I'm guessing. You can cut your current sim card down to nano if you really want to be adventurous.
How did the prime membership go? Any issues with getting the free year?

Yeah I`ll be cutting in-laws sim so I`ll wait until I sort the phone out. Prime automatically adds a year after putting your amazon email account when registering the phone, went through without a hitch.
Ok so factory restore didn`t really restore everything. Google now app launcher still on when it booted up. So this will be a fun night. Any suggestions on what should I try next?
Is Safestraponly for 4.6?
I wish I knew. I haven't gotten mine yet so I've just been trying to read and prepare.
Have you unlocked the phone?

Have you checked this thread?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=60536921
I believe you would need to unlock the phone in order to install this update since its for an unlocked phone. But I could be wrong.

Not yet need nano sim card to unlock and that`s why I`m being wary on going through all the way tonight. They sent unlock code printed on a sticker with a disclaimer that basically saying once you claim the prime membership you are not able to return it. Found this unlock method for FP, does anyone knows other way of unlocking it without sim card?
I think you need a non att sim card so that it asks for the unlock code. That's going to be my issue. Don't know anyone with a non-att nano sim card

New to FP...one of the 2500 eBay purchasers
I'm in the same boat. Ordered my FP from eBay with the one year extension of Prime...so it was about $50 for the phone after tax and discounting the Prime membership. So my questions are...
1 - What is the best way to go to get Google apps working as I pretty much use much of the Google ecosystem. Should I sideload the Google stuff, or just root and go to CM11. I want to make sure I have all the LTE bands working and I'm not sure if CM11 changes the modem.
2 - If I stay with Amazon Android do I stay on Version 3 or upgrade to Version 4. Which works best with Google sideloads?
Any clear advice to a new user of FP. In the past I've had HTC and Samsung and always unlocked the bootloader and rooted. There is a lot in the forums I have to read but maybe somebody could encapsulate some advice to those peoples who seemed to have bought the eBay deal. Much thank for guidance from experienced users.
From my understanding, there is root for 4.6.1, and Google stuff seem to work better on 4.6.1. So I'm definitely planning on upgrading when I get the phone.

Ok found an old TMobile micro sim and just followed this guy and cut into nano and when I turned on the botched half rooted FP it just asked for the unlocked code and the code provided worked.
So this time I downloaded the Google services zipped file in this thread and jumped to his step 2 and when it came to step 2.iii I followed this guy`s instructions. I had to download es file explorer on amzon app store first so I can get to google services files that I had transferred from the comp. And turned off wifi so the auto update download will not finish downloading.
Basically I got google now launcher working fine was able to install the obligatory Facebook app until I updated the Market with Google play store. After that the dreaded "Google Play ervices has stopped" started popping.
I`m going to try to find a fix but if there`s none, it looks like updating to 4.6 would be the best route. Unless someone can give their 2 cents on this matter.
Ok so updated to 4.6 and rooted with kingroot. Play store worked great for few minutes andand found out about this white screen problem.
I`ll try to see how "stable" the cm11 which I doubt ready for daily use if not I`ll just have the inlaws use fire os. The update made it look closer to their old phone and actually not too bad. As long as they have facebook and candy crush they`re happy. Also mayday would actually benefit me in the long run
Update:
Used the apk files in this guide which looked newer versions and it seemed to do the trick this time while rooted with latest kingroot at 4.6. Even after I installed google now launch and google quick search which forced me to update the google services to use which also ended up updating the play store. So far no issues with play store.
Update:
Play store white death screen is back.......!!!!
I think I finally figured the fix for white death screen!!? The problem is ****ing google is auto updating the playstore automatically to a 5.xx version which breaks Playstore. Found the solution in this link. When GP auto update just disable/unistall updates and reinstall the older 4.6 GP or the last 4.8 GP apk version before 5.xx. Then I tried all possible options to block play store from auto updating. I used the Disable Services app method and the terminal emulator that someone suggested in the previous link. So far no white death screen.
Update:
Google managed to get around my solution and updated play store again, mfckers!
Any suggestions on how to block NSA auto updating play store?
I believe you need to use these on 4.6.1 http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-phone/general/google-play-store-4-6-1-version-4-apks-t3098592 I never had an issue with it

Its a very stable rom. I've been using it one week today. It got an update 3 days ago. You will get the "play services stopped working message" but that's happening with stock. Play store has opened every time I try it. Unless you like fire os better I'd try the ROM. I was skeptical too. In fact, I wasn't anticipating using this phone as my daily driver but that's exactly what happened. Just make a backup of stock to be safe.
Finally I got everything figured out. I just flashed the flashable stock 4.6 image from this thread through safestap. And every google services seemed to be working properly now (Maps, Hangouts,Navigation etc.). I just installed nova launcher and the phone feels like regular android phone right now.
I'll stick with the fire os for now as I need the phone to be really stable before handing the phone to the in laws.

Disable Auto Updates

Here's my story. i had the new update brick my phone. i managed to backdate it to the I317UCUCNJ1 that worked previously, only for it to start begging for an update again and brick again i backdated once more, then deleted everything i could for the updates. now the Phone wont update, but it notify's me every damn day, several times, to get the update. i click ok and it just closes out, but how can i get this off
the problem is, the phone is rooted and it keeps bricking. if i flash it back to the previous version, what are my options? i've never had success with triangle away and i'd hate to really do some damage. its time for a new phone soon but i'm holding on to the 2 for now.
thanks for any help
If the phone is rooted...
Download the pro version of titanium backup from the play store....and freeze the software update apk from within titanium backup....and done...
The free method would be too locate the update apk and delete it using a root explorer app....
Either way....those nag screens for an update will stop...
Note:
UCUCNJ2 Update provides a partial patch for the stagefright exploit..
It is assumed that Samsung and ATT will be releasing another patch to fully isolate the stagefright bug...
If you want to stay fully protected....you could use an AOSP rom such as cyanide or CM 12.1 official as they are already fully patched.....but I'm not sure what OS you prefer...
I use both cyanide and CM12.1 official as I don't like bloated Samsung roms....g

Android Pay on a Rooted G3

Can't believe there aren't 10 threads about this for the G3 already. I've learned what everyone has who's rooted and trying to install Android Pay. No deal. And this really sucks, because I was looking forward to this.
I tried to install it from Google Play, but there's no install button. It says device is not compatible. So, I followed advice I've found on line. Installed Root cloak, cloaked Busybox and Wallet, and I disabled Superuser. Still no install button.
Next, I downloaded the latest Google Play Services and Android Pay APK's and installed them. Now when I try to open Android Pay, I get the error, "Android Pay is not Available". I'm not running xposed, BTW. I have an ls990 on Candy5.
I expected to run into problems loading my cards that are already saved on Wallet or when I go to use it, but I didn't count on not being able to install and open it. Has anyone with a rooted G3 been able to? If so, how?
I just unchecked "Enable Superuser" in SuperSU Pro, and Pay installed fine after that. Then I just re-enabled Superuser.
That's one of the the things I did, but it doesn't work. hmmm....
I've tried everything. Nothing works.

Disable SU, Root Cloak, some Device hider thing... Nothing works.
i have tried but not work
i have tried but not work!
Nothing I've read has helped. Most rooted users can't load cards. I can't even download the app from Google Play, and the apk installs but won't open up. Frustrating!
It updated automatically for me. But I can't load a card either now. This is really frustrating because use wallet everyday to make purchases.... WTF Google! I hope someone can fix this and soon. I've tried every work around so far
Rooted users on stock ROMs have had various degrees of success with Pay. Those of us with AOSP ROMs are almost universally getting nowhere.

When I get a chance, I'll restore an old nandroid of Barepop and see how it goes. Here and on G+, it seems I've seen people on AOSP at least get to the point where they're adding cards. This is the first time I recall seeing a line drawn between stock & AOSP. Worth a shot. Thanks!
Can't get this to work, stock or skydragon

Looking for SMS/MMS/RCS App w/message blocking/filtering on content phrase/keyword.

I recently updated my old Sprint GS3 to Lineage OS 14.1 with GApps. Only problem is, that in the process, I lost the ability to block texts based on their content (NOT what number they came from). The stock Sprint Messsage app on KitKat had this. But neither the most recent GApps or Google version has this. I've tried a bunch of other options available from the Google Play Store, and so far they either, don't have the feature, it doesn't work the way I need it, OR they drive me nuts with ads or wacky features I don't need or want. I've also tried copying over .APKs from some other Samsung phones on Sprint. But I couldn't get any of them to successfully install or work on my phone. Any constructive suggestions would be much appreciated. THANKS - mz

The problem with copying the APK from a Sprint phone is that the stock system is odex and lineage is deodex. You could try flashing a stock ROM that's deodexed and backing up the APK with titanium, then restoring it on lineage. May or may not work because some of those stock app just want the TouchWiz system no matter what. You could try copying the APK from a stock deodexed ROM (like wicked x) and then installing it on lineage as a user app. But like I said some of those Samsung apps need TouchWiz to function. Just thought I'd throw out some things to try.

administrator deactivation

Greetings all! Have an issue on my LG G3 (stock rom, no root). Recently installed an app/widget (Fun Flashlight), and noticed that i got a heavy battery drain and heated device even not using my phone.
Well, to uninstall this app i need to remove the admin approval, but every time i try to do that, the process com.android.settings crash and wont remove autorization.
What can i do to solve this without hard reset?
Thanks in advance
1st, root your G3. Very easy, install twrp and then flash supersu. Next you can remove anything

You could also try some non root package disabler, just to disable your app. Not sure for G3, though

Gonna try it. But theres a problem. For now i only have access to a pc at work, and i'll have to flash another version in order to get root. Sw version 30n. Tryed apk root but no success
Got root, app uninstalled. Thanks to LGup and a stock rom "upgrade" to version 30b. Now i got some issues with Google Play Store always closing :/ should i get a v30n again to upgrade?
